love my purchase.......2007-04-05
this is a very good book. I received it in a timely manner.
Not what I thought it was.......2007-02-01
Unsure of what else to do besides mount my work on stark black pages I set out in search of some reference material. Since this book is called Creative Portfolios I assumed it would give me a taste of how other designers make their portfolio's stand out. Boy, was I wrong. Thankfully I checked this out of the library instead of wasting money on it. This book is mainly all text and is obviously extremely outdated. Don't waste your money.
Creative this book is not.......2001-10-11
If you're in a design field such as architecture or graphic design, and looking for some inspiration or direction to help you with your portfolio, look somewhere else. This book is a waste of trees. The pictures are almost non-existant, and those that do appear are nothing more than clip art. The text is matter of fact and never strays from the blatantly obvious.
Creative this book is not!!!.......2001-10-10
If you are in a design area, architecture, graphic design or the like, don't waste your money. The word creative does not apply to this book at all. There are very few illustrations, all of which are horrible and the text rarely strays from common sense. I turned to this book to gain some direction and inspiration and recieved neither.
read this before you buy.......2001-03-21
This neat little 70+ pages book was a disappointment. Perhaps because I was looking for something else. I am writing this review because I don't want someone to make my mistake. See, I was looking for a book that would be full of colored photos and diagrams; I was looking for pictorial examples and suggestions of "creative" portfolios. I really wanted to SEE the ideas. What I got was black and white, mostly text with a few pages of hand drawn sketches and clip arts. I think it's a pretty good intro to "how to create a portfolio", but it still lacks a lot of information. One thing, it generalizes how a portfolio should be created. It seems to assume to you can get away with having one good portfolio. It never talks about how you should diversify/change your portfolio according to where you are submitting it to--a graphic design firm vs. a publication firm vs. web developing firm vs. newspaper. One of the biggest failure is in its information about submitting a porfolio for grad schools. It talks as if all Grad programs are looking for a certain type of portfolio. It never even told the reader to READ carefully, each school's portfolio requirements. Hmm..I don't recommend this book.

A GOOD LOOK AT BUILDING THE A'S DYNASTIES.......2002-09-03
I HIGHLY SUGGEST THIS FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE GREAT A'S TEAMS OF THE PAST AND PRESENT. I ADMIRED AND RESPECTED THOSE THE TEAMS OF THE EARLY 70'S. THEY TRULY WERE ONE OF THE BEST TEAMS IN MODERN HISTORY. THE TEAMS OF THE LATE 80'S AND EARLY 90'S WERE AWSOME WITH THE BASH BROTHERS. THE TEAM OF NOW HAS GREAT PITCHING AND TIMELY HITTING EVEN WITH THE LOSS OF THE GIAMBINO. THE AUTHOR DOES DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING THE EVENTS THAT LED UP TO THE DYNASTIES AND SOME FACTS ABOUT THE PRIVATE LIFE OF THE MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS. ALL IN ALL IT IS A VERY DETAILED AND INTERESTING READ. ALL BASEBALL FANS SHOULD READ THIS BOOK.
The Best Account Yet of the Best Team Ever.......2002-04-18
I consider myself not only an avid baseball fan, but a die hard Oakland Athletics fan. I have read numerous books about the A's, but never has there been a book as thorough, original and entertaining as Champions. The detailed account Dickey provides of the three dynasties, from Finley to Henderson to Giambi, is both informative and enlightening.
Champions is easy to read, easy to follow and impossible to put down. I recommend this book to all baseball fans, particularly those with a soft spot for the Oakland Athletics.
Book Description
Oakland is a blues city, brawling and husky . . .
Often overshadowed by San Francisco, its twinkling sister city across the Bay, Oakland is itself an American wonder. The city is surrounded by and filled with natural beauty—mountains and hills and lakes and a bay—and architecture that mirrors its history as a Spanish mission, Gold Rush outpost, and home of the West’s most devious robber barons. It’s also a city of artists and blue-collar workers, the birthplace of the Black Panthers, neighbor to Berkeley, and home to a vibrant and volatile stew of immigrants and refugees.
In
Blues City, Ishmael Reed, one of our most brilliant essayists, takes us on a tour of Oakland, exploring its fascinating history, its beautiful hills and waterfronts, and its odd cultural juxtapositions. He takes us into a year in the life of this amazing city, to black cowboy parades and Indian powwows, to Black Panther reunions and Gay Pride concerts, to a Japanese jazz club where a Lakota musician plays Coltrane’s “Naima.” Reed provides a fascinating tour of an un-tamed, unruly western outpost set against the backdrop of political intrigues, ethnic rivalries, and a gentrification-obsessed mayor, opening our eyes not only to a singular city, but to a newly emerging America.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting.......2006-02-11
This book isn't a concise or in-depth discourse of Oakland history, but it covers enough of the city's past and present to inspire the reader to learn more. I am, for example, quite interested to learn more about the Black Panter movement, but I can't say that I got a clear view about what the movement was and who was involved from "Blues City." Additionally, the book covers some minor recent local events in Oakland, and the book may be a somewhat difficult read for somenone not familiar with the events or people involved.
Reed has a somewhat muddled view of recent change in Oakland. He clearly despises Jerry Brown and his plans to move people downtown, build redevelopment projects, and bring businesses back to the city. However, Reed cherishes redevelopment projects of the 70s and 80s, such as Jack London Square, Preservation Park, and the Old Oakland district. (If you've been to downtown Oakland, you can judge for yourself whether Brown or Reed's vision of the city is correct.) I definitely get the feeling that if you came to the city after 1999, you are not welcomed or liked by Reed. The Oakland of the '60s, '70s, and '80s was Reed's city, and now that it has changed, Reed is clearly bitter about it.
Altogether though, the book is a pleasant short read for anyone interested in Oakland. It is a fantastic place with lots of cultural and racial diversity. Reed celebrates the city's people in "Blues City," and I couldn't agree with him more.
Oh, what could have been.......2005-01-02
Ishmael Reed's "Blues City" is a lot like Oakland itself: full of promise, but fraught with serious problems. To be sure, Reed is a provocative writer. His resume speaks volumes to his varied literary talents -- poet, novelist, essayist -- and large swaths of the boook reflect these skills. Reed tells it like it is in Oakland and he's surely developed a deep fondness for his adopted hometown. Sadly, though, the book frequently veers off course and morphs into political tirade. In other parts, Reed descends into bitter racism. This, in itself, doesn't make the book a disaster. But it certainly seems that the author taints what could have been a timeless memoir of Oakland with large dollops of political and racist invective. After all, Jerry Brown will some day leave office. But "Blues City" deserves to stay on our shelves for many years to come.
Not the "L"east Bay..........2004-05-13
While reading Mr. Reed's words, I was reminded why my husband and I keep choosing Oakland as our home, despite our overburndened and poorly run Oakland Unified School District and long work commutes to San Francisco and beyond. Reed reminds us that this city steeped in natural beauty stands alone as a gem--
shadowed with distinct architecture, a progressive appreciation of (and engagement with) diversity, and a long and current history of civil rights efforts.
I enjoyed Reed's references to San Francisco and Berkeley for context, but remind non-native readers that Oakland has its own distinct history and pulse. Oakland exists and thrives and is home to some of the most progressive and creative thinkers, students, artists and teachers I know. Is Oakland a Blues City or a cure from the blues of conformity, planned subdivisions and homogeneous communities? This is a good read, especially if you already find yourself lucky enough to live here.
stop misquoting Gertrude Stein.......2004-03-11
That famous quote "There is no THERE there" was in reference to her childhood home, which had burned down. It didn't have anything to do with oakland itself.
Glad to see this book - looking forward to reading it.
Oakland Reconsidered.......2003-12-28
"Blues City," which is a part of a series of books published by Crown that features prominent authors and their observations of several key locations around the United States, is written by Ishmael Reed ("Mumbo Jumbo," "Flight to Canada," etc.) about Oakland, California. Reed, known for his "writin' is fightin'" style of nonfiction (see his most recent collection of essays, "Another Day on the Front" [2003], for a taste of his pugilistic prose), is as calm as you will see him in "Blues City." A journal of sorts, Reed relates his experiences on various historical tours around Oakland as well as his attendance at scattered cultural festivals around the city. In the process, Reed portrays Oakland as an important site of multicultural achievement, as a city inhabited by whites, blacks, latinos, asians and gays who have contributed significantly to the economic and cultural development of the city. It is interesting to note that Reed does not dwell on Oakland's present-day reputation as a hotbed of crime. But he is not entirely apologetic about this city which he definitely loves. He cites how the founding of Oakland happened because East Coast whites stole land from the Peralta family who inhabited the land before them. He also talks about the drug epidemic that plagues the Oakland neighborhood he lives in. The most poignant sections of the book focus on David Hilliard, one-time chief of staff of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. Reed attends a tour of sites of historical importance to the Black Panthers. The Panthers had been highly influential regarding Oakland politics over the years, but their contributions have been neglected, forgotten or viewed as criminal disruptions (see Elaine Brown's "A Taste of Power" [1992] for a more detailed description of the Black Panthers' immersion into the political world of Oakland), and Hilliard's tour is filled with fond memories as well as darker ones. Reed's portrayal of Hilliard's disappointment, disgust and sadness with how the Panthers were destroyed as well as the kind of political movements that currently operate on the Left is well-balanced and poignant--never condescending or reverent. But if there is anything this book seems to be, above all else, it is a rant against current Democratic mayor Jerry Brown. Brown, according to Reed and others, has betrayed his campaign promises to the minority communities who supported them by gentrifying Oakland. In these instances, the Reed's punchy rhetorical style returns. For those such as I, this is classic Reed. But others might find that some of his more controversial statements have little to do with Oakland, and that the book lacks any sort of organizational system. This book is far from being a complete statement on Oakland, but it does not have to be--it is simply one man's perspective on the city.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic insight.......2007-07-13
This book arrived at my house yesterday, and I have since nearly completed it. I really can't put it down. This book is a real gem, with interviews of the real pros whose work you have certainly already heard. This book really gives you an extensive background of music in movies and a formidable description of what kind of work it REALLY takes to take on such a monumental task. For someone who is interested in film scoring, it shows you just about everything and everyone you will encounter. The interviews towards the back of the book are total gems. This book was a shot-in-the-dark buy, but a real gem. If you write music and you don't own this... you get the idea.
Beginner or Pro this will work for you.......2007-07-03
It`s all Berklee here !!!
Written by the great Richard Davis it`s an invaluable book that reveals the film scoring process.
It's just perfect for people who wants to begin a composer career. Very practical to read.
And if you're pro this will ilustrate you how to do it better, and have some important considerations
WARNING!!! This book will make you WANT to become a Film Compoer!.......2007-06-28
WARNING: this book will make you want to become a film composer! The quick, easy-to-read form of COMPLETE GUIDE TO FILM SCORING is nearly flawless because the more you read, the more you'll want pursue film scoring as a career.
The first part on the History of Film Music I was actually planning on skipping but I'm glad I didn't because it was super interesting! This section contains just enough information to make the reading effortless; not too many details to bog down the opening chapters.
Production is the title of the next section, which explores how a movie gets made and, more importantly, how music is incorporated into the film. Section two explains the composer's time frame, the spotting session and how every member of the music department contributes to the score. Now this is when the book begins to get dangerous because, as you read it, you think, "So these are the people that will work for me when I'm the film composer".
The guide gets more dangerous in Part 3, the Music because this section talks about composition, styles, songs, soundtracks, animation, and ethnic music but presents no written music. Part 3's chapters only offer examples of movie soundtracks; therefore you could only understand the particular idea of the example by actively listening to the soundtrack of the movie. This fact has forced me to give this book four stars instead of five. (If more musical examples of great film music are what you are looking for, buy The Art of Film Music which is full of them!)
The next section deals with the business side of music. This section is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and is the reason I gave this book a warning. The first chapter in the section talks about attorneys and agents. The way the author talks of about them, it gives the impression that the composer composes and everyone ELSE does the rest. Then, he explains copyrights and other aspects of publishing which was very informative. At the end of this section it explains royalties and throws huge dollar amounts at you. By the end of this chapter you can't wait to become a composer!
The last section has some fascinating interviews. 19 to be exact, and because there are so many, they kind of blend together.
Now let me explain the warning.
If you are good at interpreting scenes and are able to write music to match, then this book will only add to your knowledge and when you read it, you should be saying to yourself, "I can do all of this!" If you cannot interpret scenes and write music, you'd better plan on learning to do so because if you want to be a film composer, this book's added knowledge will NEVER make up for your lack of musical comprehension.
Not a bad book, but not what I expected.......2007-01-12
When I bought "The Complete Guide to Film Scoring", i wasn't expecting it to be so... complete.
Actually, being a music major i was expecting a much more musical approach to this subject. I was interested in examples and more detailed information about how to write music for a film. The book includes this subject in a chapter, but it is treated pretty generaly.
What I found, and in really detailed way, were the means of making money with your score, full of examples, different approaches and all the necessary data to take full advantage of your score. However, it didn't satisfy me too much.
This Book Is The Best.......2006-11-10
I am a film music composition student and this is the most detailed book that I have read on the subject. The interviews with well-known film composers are really good. I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
this book officially kicks ass.......2004-07-13
First of all, I just wanted you to know - this book officially kicks ass.
I have been messing around with Flash animation on and off for the past 4 years. Some of my stuff appeared on Howard Stern's syndicated TV show, and I even won a prize in an animated joke competition.
But I have been in a total slump lately - no motivation or understanding of how to improve my skills and not a decent idea to speak of. I haven't posted a new animation on my website in well over a year.
Then I received the book (Producing Independent 2D Character Animation) as a gift. It has been the jump start I needed, like shock treatment for my creativity. I've written some scripts and started storyboarding. I also did an animatic in Flash to check the timing/jokes. With the procedures outlined in the book as my guide, I intend to begin animating again shortly.
Thanks to the author for sharing his knowledge.
Informative; Possibly Suffers from a Misnomer.......2004-07-10
There is some good information in this book. If you have at least a modicum of familiarity with animation though, there's very little new about art or theory or instruction in here. The title and subtitle should be reversed in terms of importance to
Making and Selling a Short Film: Producing 2D Independent Character Animation.
Granted, this is not a flaw with the book, but I am writing this review as a caution to those who might think of it as one thing, when it is in fact another. They don't mean "I produced animation for Mary." They mean "For Mary I was involved in an animation production."
Difference being, aside from a section on tips, there is -no- mention of the process of animating, but rather name-dropping of software/hardware you'll need to run a digital version of the conventional studio, presented vicariously through the author recounting his experiences in making his short film.
All that being said, though, the tips are pretty good and the single most informative part of this entire book are the exclusive interviews with artists and suits from around the industry. These are so insightful (on the respondent's part) and so chock full of good things to know that it might have been more beneficial to chop the price in half and have the whole book just be about the interviews. Still, keeping the price the same, it's almost still worth it.
This is not a bad book by any means; on the contrary, it is one of the better, more clearly written books out there, and though there are too many purposeless illustrations, the ones with purpose are great and it's wonderful eye candy to have them in full color. I never got a chance to see it before I bought it, and ordered it into Barnes and Noble by my house...Now I'll likely be contributing it back into the world via the Marketplace as an interesting one night stand...
best buy for beginning animators.......2004-05-06
explains all resources all indumentary needed and best of all almost everything has high budget and low budget examples.
Why is this so expensive?.......2004-02-25
This book is selling for $27.99 at Barnes and Noble as of 2/24/04 - that's over $20 less than here!
Highly Recommended!.......2003-07-12
This book is the most concise, and comprehensive book I've seen on the subject of producing a 2D animated cartoon. While several other books focus on the art of animation, Mark Simon focuses on the nuts and bolts of "getting it done". Topics flow from planning, visualization, character design to storyboarding, audio recording and animatics, through editing, rendering and even distribution options. The sample CD-ROM has a huge assortment of demo programs to help you "work along" with the book. It is by no means the ONLY book you need to embark on animating a cartoon, but it is an essential one for any prospective cartoon filmmaker's library. Interviews with several industry professionals are included and add a perspective from the talent buyer's view. All in all a very handy resource for someone who knows what they want to do, but need guidance to realize their vision.

Book Description
To what extent do moviemakers, television and radio producers, advertising executives, and marketers merely reflect trends, beliefs, and desires that already exist in our culture, and to what extent do they consciously shape our culture to their own ends? In-depth interviews with ten executives from the "culture industry" and five scholarly analyses examine that question, and address the issues of power and authority, meaning and identity, that arise when cultural producers define and react to audiences.
In their own words, leaders from companies like Twentieth-Century Fox, National Public Radio, and Warner Bros. Television describe their perception of the sometimes paradoxical relationship between culture and what influences it. For example, while the former president of Coca-Cola North America claims the company has never tried to create a trend, he notes that "we market in more countries than belong to the United Nations [a product that] has insinuated itself into the lives of the people to a point where it has become-you know, it's there." These reflections by key players provide an unprecedented view, as editor Richard Ohmann writes, "into the ways cultural producers imagine or know markets and how such knowledge figures in their decisions about what events, experiences, and products to make."
Book Description
Professional football today is a $6 billion sports entertainment industry. In this astute field-level view of the National Football League since 1960, Michael Oriard looks closely at the development of the sport and at the image of the NFL and its unique place in American life. At the heart of this story is a question with no simple answer: has the extraordinary commercializing and "branding" of NFL football since the late 1980s ironically weakened the cultural power of a sport whose appeal for more than a century was fundamentally noncommercial?

I found this book extremely motivative. If you are down without ideas, frustated with your day-to-day monotonous work, just pick this book and go to some quite place and start reading. You will not know how you completed this book. You will be continuously excited when you read through and your motivation is back.
