Customer Reviews:
For Erte, costume design was just another form of high art.......2002-11-20
The Russian born fashion and costume designer Romaine de Tirtoff was known as Erte for the simple reason that was the French pronunciation of his initials "R.T." Erte was one of the most prodigious designers of the twentieth century, known for his colorful and audacious Art Deco designs. Even if you do not recall his name, I bet your remember having seen his work before. "Erte's Theatrical Costumes in Full Color" offers 49 plates from 1911 to 1975, with captions, of the work Erte did for theatrical productions, where his imagination was most unfettered and where his popularity lasted considerably longer than it did in the real world of high fashion. Erte was designing costumes for Mata Hari way back in 1913 and was still designing costumes and sets for a production of the opera "Der Rosenkavalier" in 1980. From a worshipper of Horus and the wife of Russian boyar to Aladdin and Faust, Erte displayed a wide array of exotic and historical styles in his dazzling costumes. The only real complaint with this collection is that there are only 49 gorgeous plates of some of his most stunning creations.

Product Description
Any on-screen schmuck can take down a wolfman with a silver bullet. It takes a certain kind of hero to hoist that wolfman overhead into an airplane spin, follow with a body slam, drop an atomic elbow across his mangy neck, leg-lock him until he howls, and pin his furry back to the mat for a three-count. It takes a Mexican masked wrestler. Add a few half-naked vampire women, Aztec mummies, mad scientists, evil midgets from space, and a goateed Frankenstein monster, and you have just some of the elements of Mexican masked wrestler and monster movies, certainly among the most bizarre, surreal and imaginative films ever produced. This filmography features some of the oddest cinematic showdowns ever concoctedMexican masked wrestlers battling monsters, evil geniuses and other neer-do-wells, be it in caves, cobwebbed castles or in the ring. From the 1950s to the 1970s, these movies were staples of Mexican cinema, combining action, horror, sex, science fiction and comedy into a bizarre amalgam aimed to please the whole family. Chapters examine the roots of the phenomenon, including the hugely popular masked wrestling scene and the classic Universal horror films from which Mexican filmmakers stole without compunction. Subsequent chapters focus on El Santo, Blue Demon, and Mil Mascaras, the three most prominent masked wrestlers; wrestling women; other less prominent masked wrestlers; and the insane mish-mash of monsters pitted against the heroes. Each chapter includes background information and a full filmography, and a wide assortment of striking illustrations-posters, lobby cards and other graphic material, some better than the movies they advertised-accompany the text.

Bobb Cutter Cuts Through The Lucha Crap .......2006-08-25
This book is the bible for fans of masked wrestling films! "Bobb" Cotter's writing style is informal and fun to read yet highly informative. His book is literally crammed with every possible tidbit of information on the wrestlers, directors, producers, actors, and actresses that made the golden age of Mexican psychotronicness possible. He also seems to have a genuine fondness for the personalities behind the cameras; with the possible exception of Doyle Green's for more difficult Mexploitation Cinema, this book is your average fan's only chance to catch a glimpse at what went on behind the scenes at an El Santo film.
Filmography is also an invaluable tool in figuring out what Lucha Libre film's NOT to buy. There are after all over 100 of them! As a fan of the genre who (for the most part) enjoys watching the films, this book has helped me to spend my hard earned pesos on fun films like El Castillo de las Momias de Guanajuato and avoid turkeys like El Aguila Real. Consider this book an investment if you're going to collect some of the films.
If you're only going to buy a single book on the topic, make it this one.
This guy sees them, so you won't have to..........2005-09-20
My first exposure to Mexican wrestling movies came from seeing a still in a magazine that showed a match in which one wrestler had a spider for a hand. Any genre that can go that far is worth exploring, and this book does a great job of providing an overview of Mexican wrestling and monster movies. The author has spent a lot of time studying these films, and it shows in the detail. In addition, the subject matter is treated affectionately, rather than as something to be derided. Unfortunately, actually watching these movies can be a chore. They are a lot like Japanese monster films: the buildup is a lot better than the payoff, the acting is atrocious, and you find yourself marking time until the next wrestling match. That this author was able to watch so many films and write about them so entertainingly is laudable. Whether they'd compel me to watch some again...I'm not so sure. I'm content in knowing that I have the best sourcebook available if I ever engaged in a late night debate on Mexican wrestling movies.

Customer Reviews:
When is a mask a skinning?.......2006-08-05
During his lifetime, Donald Cordry was a respected collector, a veritable walking encyclopedia on the folk arts of Mexico. His research on Indian costumes is highly respected. Unfortnately, Cordry's mask book, published postumously,is a testament to how even a knowledgible collector can be duped by unscrupulous dealers. Many of the masks represented in the book doubtless are genuine. But many are not. It's a pity, but some of the most skillfully carved and creative masks are, in essence, fake. The state museum of Arizona bought more than 500 of Cordry's masks shortly before his death -- again proving that even the experts can be fooled. This is a gorgeous book. The pictures are great, and the "masks" simply breath-taking. Buy and marvel -- but don't believe too much of what you read.
A Good Source on Mexican Material Culture.......2000-06-24
In designing a lesson plan on Mexican masks for the Mathers Museum of World Cultures at Indiana University, I found the Donald Cordry Exhibit Catalogue to be one of the most informative sources. Griffith's introduction to the book is clearly written, and well organized. But Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the book is the great number of color plates that accompany the text. It is precisely these illustrations that give this book its flavor. The plates feature masks from different regions of Mexico, especially from the state of Guerrero. Other mask-making traditions represented in this collection are those of the Mayo and Yaqui tribes from Sonora. Their famous "pascola" masks, for example, are among the most strikingly wonderful pieces that one can admire and read about in this book. The catalogue is only sixty-four pages long. But in spite of its short length, it serves well as an introductory source to the mysterious world of masks and masked performances. The high-quality photos alone (thirty-four total) make it well worth it.

Customer Reviews:
Gentlemen, welcome to the Amazon lair........2000-01-07
I have read the content of "Shagadelically Speaking: the Words and World of Austin Powers." I read this extensive glossary in one evening, could not put it down. It is quite amusing. Need to be thrown a bone? Refer to this title. It can answer any questions about me or my archnemesis, Austin Powers. Gravitated too much toward "The Spy Who Shagged Me," though. There really is nothing quite like it, it's breathtaking, I suggest you read it. (bites pinky sadistically) Toodles.

Austin's the man anyone who doesn' think so must be a square.......1999-09-15

Loved this volume (and I'm totally not related to the author). The ultimate coffee table/conversation startin'/Mclaughlin Group watchin' person's kind of book.
Very Groovey book, but..........1999-07-31
I'm one of the biggest Austin' fans, and I really enjoied the book, but I think that this is not fair that most of the things in the book, are about the new movie.
It's totally swinging baby, yeah!.......1999-06-30
This book is totally shagadelic! I thought it was totally swinging! If you don't like it, then you don't like Austin Powers! Him and his book put the GRRR in swinger, baby! Yeah! Totally shagadelic! So swing on by your bookstore and try to get your hands on it, while it lasts, baby! Yeah!

Here are the songs and stories that made history. Includes lyrics, music, song histories, trivia, humor plus 100 Civil War photographs and illustrations. A great companion to our recording, "Ballads & Songs of the Civil War." 5 1/2" X 8 1/2", perfect bound, full color cover.
Customer Reviews:
An anthology of vintage songs & anecdotes from the Civil War.......2005-03-14
Rousing Songs and True Tales of the Civil War is an anthology of vintage songs and anecdotes from the American Civil War. Each song is fit onto one page, in simple musical notation with the lyrics printed both within the music notation and separately for easy reading. Black-and-white photographs and illustrations embellish the histories behind individual tunes and some just plain eye-popping tales. Especially ideal for Civil War buffs as well as anyone interested in singing vintage pieces or performing them on any simple instrument (the tunes appear to work especially well with a harmonica), Rousing Songs and True Tales of the Civil War perfectly captures the spirit of a troubled and transforming era.
Product Description
Mount Carmel, viewed as a holy place by Jews, Christians and Muslims, is where the prophet Elijah is venerated. For many centuries hermits have followed his example and monks regard him as their Father. During the crusades, around 1200 A.D., a small group of hermits settled around the spring of Elijah to lead a contemplative life there in silence and solitude. To the first Carmelites this geographic location was a mystical space in which to live in the presence of God alone. Albert, patriarch of Jerusalem, gave them a life rule (1206-1214) which, at the time of their expulsion by the Saracens in 1247, was adapted to new circumstances by pope Innocent IV. In consequence, the mystical space of Carmel with its contemplative life is experienced wherever they are given a place and God calls them. The commentary presents the Carmel as a spiritual model which is ideally suited as accompaniment on the spiritual journey of all who know themselves called to a life in God's presence in the desert of their life.
Customer Reviews:
The mystical space of Carmel and the Rule of St. Albert.......2006-12-24
I currently use this book as the foundation of a series of lessons I am giving to Lay Carmelites on the Rule of St. Albert. It is a scholarly book, by the Dutch Carmelite, Kees Waaijman, and in many places it is difficult for lay people to understand. It is also the only book on the Rule of St Albert that I have discovered. It is very thorough, with a wealth of detail and references. I give it only 4 stars because of the difficulty in following the author's train of thought.
