5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for.......2007-03-23

This book doesn't contain a lot of jargon. It has pictures of how to do things and explains things in non-technical terms. Great for beginners but also useful as a refresher when you haven't used some aspect for awhile. Well laid out index so easy to find what your looking for. These people have done a good job. Hope they bring out another one more advanced.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Newbies - Like Me!.......2006-10-17

I had no idea what the interface looked like or ANY idea about how to use 3DS Max; I just knew I want to learn how to do animations.

Well, I know this book isn't going to have me making 3D animation movies, but it does give a great insight into the program's basics.

Lots of hands-on exercises, just as I like. Lots of pictures too. The authors do an excellent job of spelling out the basics and telling you exactly what you need to do to complete an excerise. And, as you move further along in the book, they "neglect" to tell you how to do something they've already covered - just like a teacher would do in class. It forces you to explore, reread (if you don't understand a subject) and practice with the program - what you need to do if you're ever going to learn to use 3DS Max.

A very well written book about the basics of 3DS Max 7.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner book for 3ds max........2005-07-17

I highly recommend this book to the beginning 3ds max student. It was very helpful to me, as it explained more of the basics and gave more detail behind the steps. Also, the tutorials frequently used diffent tools to accomplish the same task. This showed how to use the graphical interface, quad-menus, toolbars, etc.

I found it the best of several books I bought to get my feet wet with 3ds max. It really helped with some of the basic lighting and material concepts. While, this book doesn't even begin to touch all the features of 3ds max, it was a great primer and I'm glad I read it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners!.......2005-06-07

This book is perfect for those just getting started in 3ds Max 7. There are a lot of easy to follow screen shots to accompany the text so it is possible to still follow along when you're not in front of your computer. It is written with plenty of step by step explanations of what you are doing and why as well as a great accompanying disk to help with tutorials. It even tackles some of the more difficult aspects of 3d modeling such as composition, the dreaded material editor (it even throws in a side bar about UVW unwrapping) and lighting. It is written with the beginner in mind and does a great job explaining concepts and procedures without insulting your intelligence. It may, however, be a little below intermediate users, it can be a great tool to brush up on fundamentals. I can't recommend this book enough for those looking to get their feet wet in MAX.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for newbies.......2005-05-23

The book by Till & O'Connell is great for newcomers simply because it doesn't attempt to give you too much information but only what new users might need to learn the basics of max 7. I had never turned on max 7 and within a week I was amazed as to how much I had learned without having any previous experience with 3d softwares. This should be the first book you buy if you are starting from scratch with max 7.

Film, video games, television ads, corporate presentations-whatever medium you're working in, a visual story is the most compelling way to provide your audience with information and, more important, with an emotional experience. Exploring Visual Storytelling analyzes the essential techniques of creating compelling visual stories. Based on the pioneering work of Minneapolis-based Visual Culture, this innovative book-DVD package examines and explains the fundamentals of the medium by covering the seven key concepts behind every visual story: context, character, conflict, plot, 2D space, 3D space, and time. Each topic is thoroughly explained in print and then applied in the companion DVD, fully demonstrating how these core concepts work together to create a cohesive, compelling story.

                Book Description

The 12th- and 13th-century early Gothic churches from the region around Paris which form the basis of this study were large-scale undertakings. Dr James draws on evidence which suggests that work proceeded in a series of projects, when funding, technical problems (for example, slow-setting mortar), and the work of other trades (such as roofing and centring) allowed. Within each project there were generally a number of separately organised phases, or `campaigns', and it is from close study of these campaigns that the author proceeds to an identification of the characteristics of the individual master masons, the template-makers.

there are times when someone from another discipline discovers things about a period that those who know it in too spepcialised a way can not do. This book examines how chruches were built from the experience of an architect who understands how stonework is put together.
He actually identifies where the idea for tracery was evolved, watching it unfold in a series of windows. Extraordinary.

                              Book Description

Cedar Grove is a tiny town about a mile and a hair past nowhere. They've got two stoplights total, an old brick schoolhouse that also serves as the town hall and bingo headquarters on Thursdays. They're very proud of their one-half of a fast food restaurant. The other half is technically in Butner. Not the same Butner to which you may be familiar with. Time rolls at a slow pace in Cedar Grove, where the most exciting thing that ever happened was the time Cleetus Harley's pig made front page of the paper for having borned her a piglet with three tails. These stories aren't fancy. They're just about the people.

Kelly's stories are filled with humor and wit as they deliver messages of faith and inspiration as seen through the eyes of Cedar Grove, that tiny Southern town about a mile and a hair past nowhere. Her beloved quirky characters will make you laugh and cry at the same time. These are people you know, people you live with, and people you can relate to. Their delicious simplicity speaks of a day gone by and reminds us of the important things in life.

Martin Popoff, a Canadian heavy metal critic, proves that he is just as good at writing about Southern rock with this book. It was heartening to see him give at least a middling rating to the Allman Brothers' 80s albums, as well as to see him give all of the Outlaws' classic albums ratings of 5 or higher. This proves that, despite his witty writing style, he doesn't put records down without giving them a fair listen.

Hello just thought I'd give the 10 tracks on the CD sampler:

                              1. THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - RAMBLIN' MAN
                              2. LYNYRD SKYNRYD - SWEET HOME ALABAMA
                              3. ATLANTA RHYTHM SECTION - SO INTO YOU
                              4. DUANE ALLMAN - GOIN' DOWN SLOW
                              5. WET WILLIE - KEEP ON SMILIN'
                              6. HYDRA - LAND OF MONEY
                              7. DIXIE DREGS - NIGHT OF THE LIVING DREGS
                              8. SEA LEVEL - TEAR DOWN THIS WALL
                              9. STEVE EARLE - COPPERHEAD ROAD
                              10. ELVIN BISHOP - FOOLED AROUND AND FELL IN LOVE

                              - After reading the book and listening to the CD sampler, I realized I like Southern Metal (ie., Molly Hatchet & Blackfoot). Although the book is a good reference for the (much) less heavier bands in the genre.

... the lack of a Confederate flag on the front cover. The reason for this is that the author, Martin Popoff, is from Canada -- that makes the whole country "South" for him. ....

As for the book itself, it's the only one I know of that takes Southern rock seriously as a movement--and it doesn't quiver at doling out harsh truths as well, such as the self-parody of the recent Skynyrd output. Actually, I would have liked Popoff to have expanded his definition a bit (he did include an "If You Like Southern, You Might Like..." section in the appendix, which included all the bands that I wish he'd have fully included) but it was also brave to actually hold himself to the geography and include only bands that came from the South itself. Gutsy and idiosyncratic as Popoff always is, his writing reaches beautiful heights when speaking about the first solo Dickey Betts album, a gentle, delicate, unassuming work that reeks genius. Eat a peach, indeed. And buy this book.

                              SOUTHERN ROCK REVIEW
                              Martin Popoff (Collector's Guide Publishing)
The extremely knowledgeable Martin Popoff is back to blow our minds yet again with his encyclopedic knowledge of... southern rock? A new twist from the man who brought us the most important piece of literature in metal, The Collector's Guide To Heavy Metal, as well as no less than two other books on metal, and current Senior Editor of Brave Words And Bloody Knuckles. But, southern rock? Here's why you should care; some of this stuff is actually heavy (Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet), a lot of these good ol' bands utilized a three guitar attack way before Maiden (even though it always sounds like one guitar, an idea Maiden also put to use) and for those into the New Orleans sound (Soilent Green, EYEHATEGOD, Down, some Pantera, some Crowbar), this is where it all began. I know it's hard to believe that an album with a cover of an extreme close-up of some hick's mustache (this book is chock full of `em) could have influenced Acid Bath, but it all makes sense. Nice touch with having album cover shots in here (hopefully an idea that will show up in the next metal review book), and southern rock album covers are almost as ridiculous as metal album covers (just with more members per band, more mustaches, less violence and less demons) so it adds a comical touch to the proceedings. As always, Popoff writes with hilarious amounts of knowledge and personality. His style of writing is his own, eschewing conventional grammar and sentence structure ("I've toned down" he says in the intro; yeah right) for another unique reading experience. My experience in the genre at hand is limited to the basics, and Southern Rock Review is a great help to getting my feet in the swamps to check out some more, with Canada's finest music journalist guiding the tour. Downers: typos galore and the included ten-track compilation CD features two bands not even included in the book (it doesn't cover prog or disco/funk crud, so why have it on the CD?) and a few of the song choices are a bit too obvious.

                                Description:
The Southern Urals of Russia contain what is arguably one of the best-preserved examples of an arc-continent collision in any Paleozoic orogen. The arc-continent collision history recorded in the rocks of the Southern Urals began in the Early Devonian with the onset of intra-oceanic subduction and the formation of the Magnitogorsk Arc and ended with its collision with the margin of Baltica during the Late Devonian. The Baltica margin consisted of a basement that was composed predominantly of rocks of Archean and Proterozoic age that, by the time of arc-continent collision, was overlain by Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, and Devonian sediments interpreted to have been deposited in rift-related grabens on the continental slope and rise, and on the shallow marine platform. The Magnitogorsk Arc consists of Early to Late Devonian island arc volcanic rocks and overlying volcaniclastic sediments. Arc-continent collision led to the development of an accretionary complex that includes shallowly and deeply subducted continental margin rocks, ophiolite fragments, and sediments that were deposited in a foreland-basin setting. The geochemistry of the Magnitogorsk Arc volcanic rocks, the structure of the arc-continent collision accretionary complex and the forearc, the high-pressure rocks beneath and along the suture zone, the mafic and ultramafic ophiolitic material, and the syn-tectonic sediments show that the Paleozoic tectonic processes recorded in the Southern Urals can be favorably compared with those in currently active settings such as the west Pacific.

                                            Description:
Several sets of staircased Quaternary marine deposits can be observed along the Gibraltar coast ranging from 1 to 210m above the present mean sea level. Geomorphological mapping establishes, from the relationship between shore, scree and dune sedimentary formations, five main morphotectonic steps on the Rock: marine terraces between 1 and 25m, 30-60m, 80-130m, 180-210m, and above. Each terrace level and its slope-aeolian linked sediments is backed by a steep relict sea cliff margin, so forming a composite cliff. The most recent coastal landforms and sediments are associated with the last 250ka linked to Oxygen Isotope Stages (OIS) 1, 3, 5 and 7. These landforms determine a morphosedimentary highstand-lowstand sequence, with several staircased and offlapped episodes, comprising a major morphotectonic step. A well-developed palaeocliff usually separates the highstand marine terraces of OIS 9 from those of OIS 7. The Gibraltar mean tectonic uplift value of 0.05+/-0.01mm/yr is maintained from 200ka to the present. Before this, at least to 250ka, the mean uplift rate was higher (0.33+/-0.05mm/yr), possibly compatible with major tectonic events in response to a NNW-SSE compressive stress field between Africa and Iberia.

                                                  Book Description

In the public radio landscape, the Pacifica network stations stand out as innovators of diverse and controversial broadcasting. Pacifica's fifty years of struggle to define itself as against social and political conformity began with a group of young men and women who hoped to change the world with a credo of nonviolence. Pacifica Radio traces the cultural and political currents that shaped the first listener-supported alternative radio station.

Rooted in wartime pacifism and free-speech ideals, Pacifica flourished in the harsh climate of the Cold War. The visionary behind it was Lewis Hill, a conscientious objector who set out to build pacifist institutions that would promote cooperation among individuals and nations. Matthew Lasar's account of Pacifica's turbulent history opens with lively portraits of Hill and the group of creative people from the pacifist community he mobilized in Berkeley, California, to establish the Pacifica Foundation. The radio station, their first project, was to be a forum for radical dialogue and a staging area for widespread conversion to pacifism.

The fledgling FM station, KPFA, took to the air in 1949 with stunningly unconventional programs. Americo Chiarito's music show, for instance, mixed classical, folk, and jazz; no one in the Bay Area-or anywhere else-had heard anything like it on radio. Nor were there precedents for the information programs-Alan Watts's discussions of Eastern philosophies, Pauline Kael's film reviews, Kenneth Rexroth's commentaries. Lasar recounts how, in the context of McCarthyism, Pacifica's identification with pacifism and radical dialogue gave way to a broader defense of free speech, emphasizing the rights of individuals whose opinions were suppressed elsewhere. Lasar shows how Pacifica's pioneering experiments in "alternative" radio exacerbated staff conflicts at KPFA and the new stations, KPFK in Los Angeles and WBAI in New York City, jeopardizing the network. In the 1990s context of identity politics and dwindling support for public media, these struggles are by no means resolved.

Despite its identity crises and funding worries, the Pacifica network remains the only independent, nonprofit radio network in the country. It originated in a perhaps overly optimistic view of what public dialogue could achieve; it continues to provide a means for discussing the complex problems of contemporary society and renewing the hope that we can face them as a community.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars Radical Radio.......2002-12-02

`Pacifica Radio: The Rise of an Alternative Network' recounts the fifty-year history of the nation's first listener-sponsored and only politically left radio network.

A previous reviewer laments the book's `failure' to critique the content and style of Pacifica's present programming. But this book's purpose is deeper and, it seems to me, much more interesting. It follows Pacifica's internal discussions, debates, and internecine battles through fifty years of its staff, board, and activist listener's efforts to maintain an American media institution that is not owned by or beholden to corporations, the government, or wealthy donors and thereby remains free to produce and broadcast challenging and controversial radio.

When Pacifica's first station, KPFA, began broadcasting to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1949 it was unlike any radio station before it. Its founders were pacifists and anarchists some of whom had spent time during WWII incarcerated as conscientious objectors. The station's agenda was radical. Its format was groundbreaking. And its means of support (listener-sponsorship) was, at the time, unheard of. Also, in 1949 its audience was tiny. An FM license could be had for little more than the cost of an application because most radios of the day were able to receive only AM signals. KPFA had to distribute FM receivers to its prospective listeners. Today the market value of the five Pacifica stations (in New York, Los Angeles, The San Francisco Bay Area, Houston, and Washington D.C.) approaches half a billion dollars.

The dangers posed by McCarthyism, the challenge and promise of the Southern Civil Rights struggle, the intense and tumultuous Vietnam years, the movements for racial and gender equality, and the struggles at home and abroad for personal, political, economic, national, and sexual liberation all have left their mark on Pacifica Radio and Pacifica has shaped those movements and events as well. Through it all Pacifica has managed to remain, as the motto of its signature program, `Democracy Now' puts it, "the exception to the rulers".

Whether one is inclined to describe the present programming as conventional or courageous (and it has elements that are both) Matthew Lasar's thoughtful account of how this `mission driven' network has reflected, responded to, and shaped our times will interest anyone who works with others to make progressive social change possible.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Provocative.......2002-11-24

Considering the pervasive myths around Pacifica's origins, the ferocity of the recent struggle over the network's future, and the continuing disappearance of alternative media at a time when we need a range of information sources, this book is particularly timely. Written in a witty and accessible but intellectual style, the book puts the pacifist beliefs of Pacifica's colorful founders in context, while also tracing the evolution of programming of the first station, KPFA, from its initial day of broadcast to the early 1960s. Down and dirty internecine struggles are described, each with valuable lessons for contemporary non-profits, progressive media organizations as well as Pacifica today. If you're interested in understanding the challenges of maintaining independent media voices, this book is a must read.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but light-weight and pretentious.......2002-11-08

This book will probably appeal more to those persons who want their opinions of Pacifica confirmed, namely that it is somehow, as one of the books blurbs puts it, "heroic". In general the content of Pacifica is entirely conventional, and in no respect is it courageous in the style of its programming or inventiveness of presentation. This book is something of a cheerleader rather than anything like an analysis of the station's content, and one must assume that a better book by a more serious scholar will eventually be written.
