Terrific book. One of the best biographies of an artist that I have read and stunning reproductions of his work. Church seemed to be an anomaly of his time because his talent and painting skills were so "over the top" that he dwarfed other painters of his time. Even the highly esteemed English artists of the 1800's were amazed by his paintings and British art critic John Ruskin praised his work. Church's output and work ethic was amazing and Howat does a great job describing his life and painting techniques. I certainly recommend this book.

I made comparisons of every reproduction, where both books had the same paintings. Here is a simplified overview, of which book had the best reproduction:

REPRODUCTIONS THAT WERE MUCH BETTER IN BOOK #1 -

REPRODUCTIONS THAT WERE MUCH BETTER IN BOOK #2 -
#17, 28, 31, 33, 34, 38, 41, 47, 49, 50, 51, 69, 71, 83, 113, 116, 125, 128, 168, 178, 180

The others were either EQUAL, or there was just a slight preference between the two.

Overall, the printing and the paper stock, is better in Book #2.

The main fault of the reproductions in Book #2 (that are better in Book #1), is they are too dark. And the main fault of the reproductions in Book #1, is that many of the reproductions are too yellow (or red, etc.).

The TITLES were different (most likely wrong in Book #1) for these paintings -
#49 (!), 53, 134, 179 (!), 185

#160 is CROPPED in Book #2! (The entire bottom, and the right-hand side).

There were many differences in the SIZE of the reproductions - too many to mention.
(Overall, Book #1 had larger reproductions, but of course had fewer paintings.)

A strikingly pretty book. The text is informative, but not at all challenging to read. Unlike many art books, this really is a straightforward informative biography with lots of well-done, accurate reproductions. It's pricey, but you get what you pay for with the prints. One might want a bit more criical an appraisal of the artist and his choice of subject matter, but maybe you just want the art.

Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) traveled the world, captured its beauty in countless paintings, and brought it home to live at Olana, his castle on the Hudson. The name was inspired by a reference Church found to a fortress or a treasury-storehouse in ancient Persia. This extraordinary selection of Church's paintings from his collection at Olana puts the most cherished of his treasures on full display in a volume that includes eighty color plates.

Church's paintings, among the most acclaimed examples of art of the Hudson River School, are found in museums and private collections around the globe. However, Church kept some of his art close by during his lifetime. Good Non-Academic Survey of Papal Elections.......2004-10-06

This is a book that focuses on how the Popes have been chosen and elected, starting with Peter and going all the way to John Paul II. Given that records of the earliest elections are scant, or non-existent, Baumgartner spends only about 20 pages going through the first 1000 years of the Church, and then another 20 pages for the next 300 years or so, but Baumgartner presents all of the solid historical information that is available, without engaging in the salacious or scandalous rumors that have characterized other histories of the Church. For example, he mentions "Pope Joan" only in passing but provides references for both those who believe she was only a myth and for those who believe she was real. Baumgartner is sparse with his footnotes, which makes the book easier to read, but all sources are cited.

The book, strangely enough, does not provide a list of Popes and their dates of reign, which is unfortunate since sometimes the dates in the text are hard to find. However, that kind of information is readily available on the Internet from places like advent.org and other Catholic Encyclopedias.

The only other flaw I could find is that the description of John Paul II's election could have had more depth, but Baumgartner does include information on the changes the current Pope has made in the election process that would affect the choice of his successor, which will be interesting when that event occurs.

This is a great book if you're looking for details about how the longest unbroken line of rulers have been chosen for almost 2,000 years. Good, bad, and lost opportunities are all presented, and it fills in some of the whys and wherefores that standard histories might miss.

DRUMS AND RHYTHM.......2000-06-08

This book is a fine introduction to the world of drums and Rhythms.

Part one deals in general with drums and rhythms and how they affect us in many ways, part two is a small encyclopedia of drums and part three deals with other sounding instruments that are often used in rhythmic music, there is one mistake there though, on page 117 he describes a Bullroarer, but what he is descriping is a Whirlie, for a good description of a bullroarer see Mickey Harts book Planet Drum and you can hear a nice sample of how a Bullroarer sounds on the first track of Santanas Borboletta, played by Airto Moreira, for an example of how a Whirlie sound see the book and the CD Gravikords, Whirlies and Pyrophones by Bart Hopkins, and listen to the track by Sarah Hopkins, you can check both of these out on the sound samples on Amazon.

Of course this is a minor point but still I wanted to point it out.

In part four he deals with rhythm basics, the three, four and five beat pulse and gives some exercices for rhythmic independence, polyrhythms and the clave

Then in part five he gives examples of some rhythms mainly from Africa and Cuba and some tips on how to play the conga and the shekere.

As said this is a good introduction to the world of drumming and rhythms and if you go through this book you are well on your way to being , at least a decent drummer with some good knowledge of the basic principles of rhythm.

Also recomended are Rhythm book by Alan Dworsky, Peter Magadini, Sule Greg Vilson, Reinhart Flatischler and videos by Kalani, Paulo Mattioli, Alex Acuna and Airto Moreira.
