The Danish silversmith Georg Jensen (1866–1935) first established a worldwide reputation as a designer of flatware, hollowware, and jewelry in the arts and crafts idiom of the early twentieth century, then went on to become a foremost international designer of elegant and refined silver creations in the modernist style. This book surveys his work from his beginnings as a self-taught artist through his apprenticeship to a master silversmith and beyond. His work is highly sought after today, and he is considered one of the most influential designers of the twentieth century.
Richly illustrated, the book provides thorough, detailed coverage of the full range of Jensen’s jewelry. My family has collected Georg Jensen flatware and jewelry for many years and we have been to many shows. There are so many pieces in this book that we have never seen the likes of before - the inventory of images in this book is staggeringly complete and we were so impressed with the quality of the book that we not only gave it as a gift, but purchased a second copy for our own library. Compared to other books of this level (e.g. those by Janet Drucker) the price of this book makes it a must have for anyone interested in Art Nouveau silver, the metal arts, or the Jensen collector.

Not what I thought.......2007-09-13
I bought this as a present for my wife. We had just returned from a trip that included a visit to the Grand Canyon, and I wanted to get her a memento of the visit. This book sounded good, but was not the one that included the beautiful vistas that we wanted. There are some photos too dark to really discern why they are included. There are some photos of a boat on the bank of the river. That could be from anywhere.
Although I suppose others may find it interesting, we didn't want a book of prose, we just wanted amazing photos. This was not that book.

This book is so awesome, and of such high quality, that its Amazon price seems surreal...I have two copies and am ordering a third, for posterity or whatever.
Intensely beautiful photographic prints, at the very leading edge of Canyon photos....almost beyond description!
If you buy one copy of this book, you'll then want another for a gift, and another for your own collection.....etc.

Yes, you would expect truly astounding photography here, and you get exactly that, in lots of different flavors too, but the stories are deft and revealing -- far more than in a book of photos alone of a place that you couldn't take a bad photo if you tried. Trimble himself is a master craftsman with the camera, but his service here is to gather some really remarkable work and voices into a tome that anyone who has gaped and prayed there will want to paw through before you get major brownie points for giving it to someone else. Terrific work.

Lasting Light is a treasure, a compilation of photographs taken of the Crand Ganyon over a broad stretch of time. The viewer/reader may gain a sense of history, passing from the old to the new. Wonderful pictures, excellent prose.......2006-03-27
U.K. photographer Peter Watson goes over British/Scottish/Welsh landscape photographic opportunities throughout each month. His pictures are extraordinary, many with phenomenal skies. That's one of his keys and you can tell he has a great deal of patience (and, apparently, a flexible schedule) to be in the right place at the right time.
As a photographer, I found his explanations behind each picture excellent -- detailed, yet still fascinating to anyone with any sort of interest in the artistic process of photography. But those pictures! They'll keep you coming back to Light in the Landscape time and time again.

The Ilan brothers have scored again with the "too much" theme. Their first book was a hotter than a cup-a-joe from your local greasy spoon. This one will not disappoint. These guys have their fingers on the pulse of what's hot, new and cutting edge, from java (the drinkable kind) to Java (the encoded kind), they've hit the jackpot, Vegas style, baby.
Their books are quotable like a Seinfeld episode(Mulva?); funny like a South Bronx prank call (this is Frank Rizzo, Jerky); and as cool as De Niro in Casino. Jackpot Ilan Brothers!
A great follow-up to their coffee joke book........1998-08-24
The Ilans have done it again! A great follow up to "You know you drink too much coffee when..." The brothers have a comically-interesting outlook on life. If you like to surf the net as much as I do, then you'll love this book. The perfect gift for anyone with E-mail.

This is the funniest book because it is so true! I haven't laughed this hard since the Ilan Brothers' coffee book. They sure know about coffee and internet addicts like me. But honestly folks, I do have "asdf jkl;" embedded on my fingers -- you have to own this book -- it is practically my new Bible -- on my nightstand, right next to that list of web sites I thinkof in my sleep that I must visit. OK, OK, so I am not as funny as they are -- but check this out -- you will totally love it.
You know you've found a really funny internet book when..........1998-08-12
We're all doing it (otherwise you wouldn't be reading this), so we might as well laugh at it. "It" is devoting more and more of our time online. I highly recommend you take enough time OFFline to read at least one book -- this one! It's quality humor. I've bought three copies and still don't have one for myself -- it's an ideal gift for anyone who is into the internet. These are the same authors who wrote "You Know You've Had Too Much Coffee When ..." They're onto something here and I wouldn't be surprised to see them on Jay Leno (their original comedic hook is up there with "You Know You're A Redneck When ...") Definitely rising stars, I'd catch 'em on their way up with a first edition copy of their book (ya never know, it might be worth something someday beyond a ton of laughs).

I was presently surprised (to say the least)when I read this book!!! I thought I knew just about everything when it came to George's earlier life.
WRONG!!!!!! The amount of detail in this book is staggering!! It covers almost all of the pioneers of the digital revolution...not just George!!! The book is set up in an intensely detailed format. It is not boring, not for one minute!!! It did make me wax nostalgic for the old days. I am sure it's much more difficult these days to break into the "special effects" business. Anyway, God bless George for being such a brave innovator in his field!!! You will love this this book, whether you're a geek or not!!!!!!!

Understand that I'm a geek myself, so don't think it a dig if I say this is a book about geeks for geeks. This book chronicles the many folks behind the scenes that contributed so much to this magical time in computers, graphics, and film-making. If you tinkered at all with graphics in the 80s or if you appreciate the amazing 3d stuff done in movies today (and how much work obviously goes into them) then you will enjoy this book. If your just a big Lucas fan and want to know more about the making of Star Wars, this probably isn't your book. However, for a wanna-be 3d graphics wiz, this book was a really interesting read.
a cultural history.......2006-08-31
A very poor title, in my opinion. It is certainly as much about George Lucas as it is about a dozen others. It captures a time and a place in our digital revolution. The mechanical linkages of the past have been replaced by 1's and 0's and this books gives the reader a very accurate and clear representation of how painful that change can be. It is most definately a must read for anyone going into 3d as a profession. It will make clear the history behind some of the tools you abuse everyday. So if you use particle systems to render fur and hair, if you paint in layers, if you use an alpha, if you render motion blur or depth of field read this book and you will know who to say thank you to the next time you are at siggraph.
Droidmaker : questionable research.......2006-08-30
I'm not too far along into this book, but I've already read that the Summer of Love ended with the concert at Woodstock, and that the US was just entering the Vietnam war in 1965. Both of these statements are wrong. The Woodstock concert took place in 1969, a full two years after the summer of love, and by 1965 the US was fully engaged in Vietnam. After all, the battle of the Ia Drang Valley (one of the biggest battles of the war) happened in November 1965.
Apparently, given all the five star reviews this book has received, not too many others are concerned about these errors, but to me they cast doubt on the entire work. If a writer can get such easily verifiable facts as these wrong, how can I trust him to be right about the primary subject, which in this case I think would be much more difficult to get right?
Droidmaker is a very well written book, and I was enjoying it until I came across these mistakes. Now I don't know if I'll bother finihing it.

Great book on Digital Revolution.......2006-06-13
I was intimidated by the textbook size of the book, but when I started reading it I couldn't put it down. It is one of the most interesting books on Lucas, Coppola, and Speilberg's rise in the digital revolution. I'm just going to recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about how digital animation and the use of computers in film came about. You don't have to be a fan of his movies to enjoy this book, but it's also great for the fans. Lucas' struggle was also inspiring. The industry didn't treat him well but the audience proved everyone wrong.
I'm not going to say any more about the book because I think it's best that you read it. Great book. Read this book. It's just great.
