Good book........2007-01-19
What I like about this book is that it has many angles for a fight style. It offers hints on small details that would make your characters look alive. I recommend that you go checking out this book first at your local library before you buy it because you might not like it. This book only shows fight moves not actual battles between two characters. It is a book for intermediate artist who has mastered some drawing skills. This book is a good reference book because if you drew a character and it look "weird" there are hints in this book that will help you fix the "weirdness."
An excellent book for the *animation* of battle scenes.......2006-02-06
If you view this book as just a drawing book, then I can understand some of the negative reviews.
For example, one of the reviewers complained that the author spent too much time on the drawings for a side kick. And that reviewer was absolutely right.
The reason is: this is really an ANIMATION book. And all those "redundant" drawings that the author is spending time on are the Key Frames and Passing Frames that are ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL for creating great animations.
For example, take Macromedia Flash, draw in those key and passing frames. Then draw in the inbetweens, and you have FANTASTIC animated action sequences. I know, because I've done it!
Viewed as an animation book, this is THE DEFINITVE BOOK for martial-arts, anime animation.
Buy the Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams, along with this book and you will have a complete course on anime animation.
For the Future Animator or Game Artist.......2004-11-23
If you've gotten Ozawa's other books, then you already know how detailed his books get! This volume is no different and goes a step further by showing you actions in progress such as showing you each movement of a person walking. Then he shows you how to do the same action but at different angles and foreshortening. There's so much info in here that it'll take you awhile to digest all the information in it. It's stacked full of drawings and side notes!
There are quite a lot of action moves in this book, specifically hand-to-hand combat. No instructions on drawing weapons even though the cover shows them.
Quite unlike Martials Arts & Combat Sports and Illustrating Battles editions, this book prep you to think in 3 dimensions and animation-type movement. If you're set on making animations and video games in the future, this book is the best way to learn spatial relations and seeing your characters more than just one or two-dimensionally.
If you're into making manga, getting this book won't hurt at all but you're probably better off getting the Illustrating Battles or Martials Arts & Combat Sports book initially.
Like his other editions, this book is young-reader friendly and covers nudity well using block, wire, and wooden model figures.
Ugh!.......2004-08-26
When I first got this book it looked like it would help me with martial arts and japanese moves. Boy was I wrong. The very fact that this is japanese animation would make the reader ASSUME this was japanese Battling. Instead, I got HUGE Bozos, throwing punches and absolutely no martial arts. In this book, Tadashi was so busy showing the angles of just one kick, that he has absolutely NO variety WHATSOEVER! I'm serious, just one move takes him up to four pages to get his point across. Do yourself a favor and skip Volume 4 MASTERING BATTLE AND ACTION MOVES in Tadashi's work.
not as good as id hoped.......2004-05-16
after getting the first three volumes of this series i admit to being a bit over-expectant of this volume. not to mention i am also guilty of judging it by its cover. as usual it starts off with some useful information about movement or anything it could be covering in this book, which i like very much and has very useful tips. however towards the part of the book where it begins to have illustrations of kicks and punches and stuff, i was utterly disapointed. the cover suggests that the book contains something on sword fighting or knife-fighting, or graceful battles, but was completly off. the battles in this book are like street fights, something i was totally not interested in. All it has is overly-masculine people throwing elbow jabs and drop kicks. there is an even distribution of girls and boys in this book, but none of them seem to be at all related to the kind of battles on the cover or back page. i suggest before buying this book you understand it will NOT give that many battle moves. it never even touches upon knives or swords. and pretty much the only action moves are people going from a walk to a run.

Fantastic sofisticated looking projects!.......2001-10-22
I haven't had a chance to by this book yet, but I did get to skim through it at my local big box of a book store (and it cost a lot more!). The projects were very contemporary, easy, and surprisingly you would be able to find the materials with no problem. A very go read, especially if you are trying to decorate on a shoestring budget.
Create beautiful and sophiticated items for your home.......2001-05-01
This is an awesome book that shows you how to create sophisticated items for your every room in your home with easy-to-find materials. A wide variety of techniques in paper arts and crafts present endless decorating possibilities. The instructions are easy-to-follow and step-by-step including photos demonstrating each technique. Though some projects are time-consuming and require some patience, they are not necessarily hard to create.
The book starts out by showing you how to create your own paper, including making a mold and deckle. It then guides you through the essentials of paper mache including layering paper, pulp casting and relief formation. Several paper decoration techniques follow, including waxing, dyeing, using a latex resist, bleaching, stamping, stenciling, decoupage, collage and gilding.
Over 20 full projects follow, and they provide ideas for many more. My favorites include the flower screen, music floorcloth and modern looking coffee table made of cardboard. Other cool projects include collage wallpaper, an exquisite checkered table top, a leaf blind, herb pot, an embossed drawer unit, paneled lampshades and a mosaic window border.
There are also some very helpful hints and tips as well as a nice resource guide in the back. Even if you don't particularly like the style or theme of something this book will give you the basics of the projects and you can let your creativity flow. With so many different ideas, this book is nothing if not inspirational.
Beautiful presentation!.......2001-01-16
I really liked the projects/photos in this book. I'm a collage artist and I found a lot of interesting and inspiring projects nicely photographed. If you like to make your house into a work of art, this is the perfect book. If you are a mixed-media artist who likes books like Making Journals by Hand and Sophisticated Surfaces, you'll like this book. Sometimes I use books more for pictorial inspiration than for the actual projects in the book and that is the case here. However, in this case, I might actually try some of the projects, especially the collage wallpaper. She gives basic info on papermaking and paper mache, and the projects include a floorcloth, a stitched patchwork wall hanging, an embossed drawer unit, and a screen that would be beautiful if made with your own handmade paper. I have an area in my personal library for decorating books and a separate area for collage/decoupage books and this one is kept in the collage section. You won't be disappointed in this book. :)

M.D. Cummings has created a delightful adventure in reading with Ferdinand The Bottle-Headed Cat. I smiled all the way through the story. It is a fun read for adults and children alike. Besides an entertaining story, there are wonderful values being taught. Good job M.D. Cummings.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific score, unplayable reduction.......2004-07-15
This is one of the great scores of late 20th century musical theatre, with one of the all time great orchestrations, worthy of Nelson Riddle at his best. It is also indisputably one of the smartest sets of lyrics in recent musical theatre memory, with a consistently high standard of humor and poetry. Unfortunately, the vocal score is reduced in a very unpianistic way, which makes it almost totally useless as a performing edition. In a score which is so oriented to the big-band and jazz tradition, there are almost no chord symbols to help the pianist along, which leaves the pianist to the exact voicings indicated in the score. That might be fine, if it weren't for the fact that many of the voicings are really impractical. In several places, it would be physically impossible to play all the notes, and the reduction doesn't make some of the notes smaller to indicate what is essential to the playing. Other times, when the reduction does indicate with smaller notes which parts are unessential, the performance of the notes left over are really unreasonable. For example, on page 71, in the song 'The Buddy System', in measures 54 through 56, the right hand plays the trombone part, a single e held all three bars, while the left hand plays quarter notes that hop up and down four octaves at 152 beats per minute. For the benefit of holding what is essentially a left hand 'thumb-line' for a full 8 beats with the same finger, we lose the sense of where the phrase goes on the piano with two clef changes and the passage, which is really rather simple musically, becomes so confusing and hard to read as to warrant significant practice or rewriting to accomplish it in performance. The accidentals are all musically accurate throughout the piece, but chord symbols would help any working pianist play the fast swing sections much more accurately and idiomatically. This is admittedly an extremely complicated score, with a lot of nuances, but the reduction makes it unnecessarily one of the most difficult scores in the world to play, I would say even more difficult than Candide, West Side Story or Night Music, which aren't walks in the park. And for a pianist who is actually going to play and help a singer along, the brainpower required to muddle through the score will make it impossible to really listen to the singer properly. Get it for the songs in the right key, but if you plan on playing it, give yourself a LOT of prep time.
(Incidentally, the piano reduction is by Dale S. Kugel, who did a much better job on the Beaumont version of 'Anything Goes. I don't know why this one is so much less readable/playable)
The Complete City of Angels.......2000-10-02
The full score to the popular darkly synical but comic musical, "City of Angels", is a very useful score for any true fan of great musicals. All the songs are in there original keys compared to the vocal selections book where some of the songs (example: Funny) are in lower keys. This was extremely irritating to me so I had to get the full score. It also contains all the diologue which helps one understand the backround to each song. Overall, it is an extremely worth while buy for anyone who wants an accurate version of the musical. Good Stuff!
Book Description
A film noir-style musical comedy set in Los Angeles in the late 1940s, City of Angels was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 1990, and walked away with six, including Best Musical and Best Score. Our songbook features 11 tunes from the show (Alaura's Theme * Funny * L.A. Blues * Lost and Found * Stay with Me * more), plus bios of the composer, lyricist, and writer.

City of Angels - script of the musical.......2007-01-16
An outstanding script from an outstanding musical.
When I saw it in London many years ago, the production's days were already numbered, even though the house was packed and the audience in raptures. I could not understand why it was not a massive hit. I still can't.
I already had a cd of the music; it's good to relive the twists and turns of the plot and the hard-boiled wisecracks.
If you never saw it on stage, you really missed out. A must for fans of detective fiction, film noir or just good music.
Read it and fall in love with the musical!.......2004-04-25
I first heard of City of Angels after hearing Anthony Warlow's recoridng of 'You're Nothing Without Me'. I bought the CD to hear more from the musical. I instantly fell in love with the soundtrack, then sought the libretto to find out what happens in between.
As soon as I started reading this, i couldn't put it down. I had no idea what to really expect, and it's the first book that i've laughed out loud while reading.
In this book, you get Larry Gelbart's words and David Zippel's lyrics. The best way to compliment this book is to also get the OB Cast Recording to really get a feel for Cy Coleman's wonderful music.
One of the funniest musicals on Broadway in years!.......2000-07-26
When City of Angels premiered on Broadway in 1989, it ran for fewer than 1000 performances. When you read this libretto, which you absolutely must do if you like musical theatre at all, you'll wonder why it isn't running today. The book is full of wit, and is incredibly funny and biting as it satirizes Hollywood movie-making. The stage directions keep you fully abreast of what's going on (even if you've never seen a show), and they allow you to easily keep track of where the action is happening. The only thing missing from this wonderful volume is, of course, the great music that goes with the song. All the more reason to buy the OCR of the show and listen to it at the same time! City of Angels is a great musical, and one you'll enjoy reading (and listening to!) time and time again.
A must for any Musical Theatre fan.......1999-01-04
Not to be confused with the recent Cage/Ryan flick, this book is the libretto of a little-known musical with music by Cy Coleman ("Sweet Charity", "The Life"), book by Larry Gelbart ("A Funny Thing...", "Tootsie"), and lyrics by David Zippel (Disney's "Hercules" and "Mulan"). "City of Angels" won the 1989 Tony Award for Best Musical and is the story of a detective novelist named Stine and the perils he encounters while trying to adapt his novels for the silver screen. In the play, scenes about Stine (in color) are juxtaposed with scenes about his private-eye creation, Stone (in black and white). Besides building some genuine film noir detective-mystery suspense, the musical offers an insightful commentary on how art imitates life, and vice versa. Unfortunately, one misses out on the marvelous jazz-infected music that accompanies the adventures of Stine and Stone if one merely reads the libretto, so grab a copy of one of the cast recordings (Broadway or London) as well!

Book Description
In the seventeenth century the English were often depicted as a nation of barbarians, fanatics, and king-killers. Two hundred years later they were more likely to be seen as the triumphant possessors of a unique political stability, a vigorous industrial revolution, and a world-wide empire. These may have been British achievements; but the virtues which brought about this transformation were perceived as being specifically English. Ideas of what constituted Englishness changed from a stock notion of waywardness and unpredictability to one of discipline and dedication. The evolution of the so-called national character today once more the subject of scrutiny and debate is traced through the impressions and analyses of foreign observers, and related to English ambitions and anxieties during a period of intense change.
