Book Description

This book was written to foster the creative spirit of the artist and to aid in the development and the continuation of realistic representational art. It is for all who love to draw the human form. It is for those who have never drawn a line, for those who are students who can draw to a certain degree, and for those professional artists who are proficient in drawing. 1 out of 5 stars Blind trying to lead the blind.......2007-06-07

One is supposed to be kind in most circumstances, but when this poor book is STILL offered to the unwitting student, it finally seems appropriate to speak out at the risk of seeming mean-spirited. Mr Faragasso's own weak drawings offered as examples should serve as ample warning that he is not in any way a master draughtsman and his instructional notes are on the same level. It is a backward, fragmented approach. How he has survived at the Art Student's League surprises me.

3 out of 5 stars It's especially unique & complicated..........2007-02-01

The title here is interesting: great choice(!). The actual contents, however, are unique yet unrefined.
I bought this based on the interesting cover & title; I hadn't actually seen its contents. When I received this in the mail, my immediate 1st impression was that this looks like someone's loose & rough notes for an *eventually* finished product. This seems like the idea for a *possible* book, not the actual book itself. Many of these drawings are exceedingly sketchy, and many are highly stylized.

Is this helpful though? That's the bottom-line, for me at least. The many pages on the planes of the figure are so incredibly complicated, it's kind of impressive & frustrating at the same time. I give the author a lot of credit in the sense that this is one of the most unique-looking drawing books I've ever seen. 5 Stars for originality! But what good is that if the actual information here isn't as good as in other currently available books? It's just too needlessly complicated & expensive for me to honestly recommend.

Maybe it's great classroom teaching, but as an individual work- it just seems like a nice try at best. If anyone's interested in drawing from memory, I highly recommend Bridgman's books. My other favorites are by Burne Hogarth, as well as The Figure: The Classic Approach to Drawing and Construction by Walt Reed.

5 out of 5 stars The absolute best book on drawing that there is........2006-08-04

Let me say first that I am highly predjudiced in favor of this book. Also, learning to draw is DIFFICULT for most of us!!
I had the good fortune to study with Mr. Faragasso about 20 years ago at the Art Students League. My father studied with Frank Reilly and Mr. Faragasso was one of his classmates. After so many years as a professional painter I can say that the knowledge that he gave to me has served me well. I am so grateful that all of this information has been assemled in one book for all to benefit from.It is also woderful that the information has been preserved (none of us are getting any younger!).
The planes are clearly explained. They relate to the structures which underlie them, therefore they can be a bit challenging. However, that IS our anatomy and it is what we have to learn in order to move forward and learn to really SEE and UNDERSTAND what we are seeing. This book will be a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Superb manual on the craft of drawing.......2006-01-24

This is one of the finest book on the craft of drawing currently available, if not the finest. The book is an execellent presentation of the program developed by the late Frank J. Reilly at the Art Students League. I know this because I was one of Mr. Reilly's drawing class monitors for two years. This is a book for people who are truly serious about learning the craft of representational drawing. Short of having Mr.Reilly or Jack Faragasso pointing out the wat, this is as good as it gets in art instruction books.

I purchased this book for the study of planes, however that section was so complex and seemed to have no reason to justify shadows and improving composition. However, the drawing exercies are very helpful and beneficial.

4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-09-28

This is a great buy for anyone who wants to know how to create their own personal style for drawing girls in manga. I love this book. My friend saw it and borrowed it from me. She has been drawing GREAT ever since! THank you how to draw manga crew!! p.s. don't be scared by the cover, it's not like that at ALL in the book! Toodles!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2006-11-30

This book truly lives up to it's name, mastering bishoujo characters. For those of you having a little trouble with designing a unique character, then this book is definately for you! This book contains different personalities that you can give to your characters, the kinds of clothes that character would wear, and hair styles. It is full of poses that would be beneficial to you as well as some scenes of walking, jumping, and the way the body twists when it's doing a certain action. Another good quality this book has is girls waking in groups and sitting in groups. I think that is very helping if you are planning on drawing a manga with a school scene with a group of friends. This book really doesn't have any nudity, it does have the outline of the nude body, but nothing obscene. I would really recommend this book. A must buy!

4 out of 5 stars Great book, I recommend to you!.......2006-08-17

This book is excellent to draw beautiful woman characters, the book shows you 20 different characters and their customes, body compositions and other kind of stuffs, a very interresting book.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best "How To Draw Manga" books.......2005-09-19

A lot of the "How To Draw Manga" series really aren't that great. But this one, they actually did a very good job with. I like the first half of the book and how it explaining the twelve personalities. The best part about is you can almost design and give an identity to a unique character of your own. Ranging from punctual and outgoing to quite and conservative.

As for the second half, it almost has "fillers" after the twelve personalities. What I mean by fillers is that just stuff to fill the pages will. But something's are relatively useful, like school uniforms, character movement, relaxed poses, and hand gestures. What I did not find to be useful was entering and closing a door, drawing hair and eyes, and driving.

I wish I could give this a five star, but I can't because they could have gone into better details of maybe the eyes and hair, or left out the closing of a door and driving. But still, this book is pretty good and I recommend this book for the intermediate to advanced artist

5 out of 5 stars The true meaning of manga.......2005-06-30

Okay, this is going to be my first review on Amazon. I'm from The Netherlands, so my English is not perfect. Please forgive me if there are some weird words or sentences in this review, I'm only 15... ;)

I'm a huge fan of manga and anime, not only on TV or in video games, but I also like drawing it myself. I've collected several books about drawing manga, and More How To Draw Manga: Mastering Bishoujo Characters is one of them.
Well, what can I say about this book... It's MARVELOUS!! It is such a great book! As I said before, I've got several books about drawing manga, and this is without a doubt the best one! It teaches you how you can perfectly draw different bishoujo characters. Their traits of character, what kind of clothes they wear, how they like to do their hear... Eyes, noses, mouths, cheeks... This book has got it all. It really helped me to get acquainted with all kinds of girls and how I could draw them with their characteristic marks. I'd definitely recommend this book to all of you!!

Here's a description of the contents of this book:
Chapter 1: Twelve Character Types
- Using Impressions to Portray the Twelve Character Types
- Key Points in Distinguishing the Twelve Character Types
- Twelve Character Types (such as the shy girl, the cutie, the bully, the imp, the princess, the bad girl and more)
- Height Distinctions
- Selecting Costumes That Match The Character
- Uniform Portrayal
- Tricks to Designing Uniforms
- Techniques in Character Image Design
Chapter 2: Making the Figure Move
- The fundamentals of Character Movements
- Walking Scenes
- Drawing Characters Entering through Doors
- Popular Relaxed, Conversational Poses
- Hand Gestures in Conversation Scenes
- Running, Leaping, Falling: Three basic Action Poses
- Figures and Cars

There are a lot of descriptions in this book, but even more beautiful art work. The drawings are absolutely beautiful. This is, in my opinion, the true meaning of manga!! Don't hesitate, just buy it: you won't regret it!
Or, as we say in The Netherlands:
Mensen, dit boek is echt te gek! Als je van manga tekenen houdt, is dit boek echt een must! Echt kopen dan, daar zul je echt geen spijt van krijgen!

4 out of 5 stars Authoritative and accurate source book.......2001-01-28

This is a wonderful reference for Japanese country textiles detailing the TSUTSUGAKI method, design motifs, indigo and cotton in historic country Japan. There are numerous pictures of this textile art detailing their age, origin, contruction, and design. You can see beautiful pictures of authentic pieces, mostly in black and white, but there are 8 full page photos, of futonji, yogi, banners, noren, and furoshiki. This is a "must have" for the collector or person interested in indigo cotton Japanese textiles for the working class person in country Japan. If this book was all in color, it would be an easy 5 stars.

              Book Description

Since the publication of Animation Art: The Early Years in the Spring of 1995, the appreciation for the accomplishments of animation artists has grown even more intense. The images strike a strong chord in us, awakening early memories and fantasies.

This new volume takes the reader from Disney's 1954 feature Lady and the Tramp up to the antics of The Simpsons. The book is illustrated with over 6500 photographs, most in color, of cels and other animation art that have been offered at auction, along with the prices they brought. In addition, thousands of other animation art auction offerings are listed, making this a comprehensive source for the collector.

Accompanying the wealth of illustrated art, the text provides historical sketches of the studios and other primary information about the artists. This is a necessary volume for all all who are interested in this wonderful art form.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Animation Art Lovers.......2006-08-23

This is an expensive book, wether new or used. The book is several hundred pages long showing pages chock-full of animation art, the dates sold and the prices. This is not a book on the hostory of animation art, collecting, etc....it is a refrence book. The animation art is broken up by studio, Disney, Warners, etc....the images that are reproduced are small, postage stamp sized images, most of which have been taken from Sotheby's and Christies Animation art catalogs, this is an advantage and a disadvantage. If you own the catalogs from these auction galleries, you know that they are expensive and don't show all the lots, and not all images are in color. These books save you the money from buying the catalogs one by one, but the images of the art are taken from the book, meaning that if there was no photo of that lot in the catalog, it won't be in the book either, and if it was in B&W in the catalog, ditto for the book. For someone like me, a casual collector, it is a great book to see all the art that has come up for sale. For someone looking for a history of animation art, this is not the book for you.

1 out of 5 stars expensive book that ONLY COVERS ITEMS AUCTIONED.......1999-01-21

Not a good book for the average collector. Does not go into much detail about the different kinds of art i.e. limited editions, oringal art, sketchs etc.. It does focus on background art 3 page. Animated art is a VERY EXPENSIVE hobby, this book will NOT HELP people in collecting tips. It is a COFFEE TABLE BOOK not much more. Pics are very small, almost 1/2 of book covers DISNEY art not much more for other collectors. FOR FIRST TIME COLLECTORS DONT WASTE YOUR TIME!!! For seasoned collectors, it offers NOTHING. All in all I would pass on this one!!!!!

              Advocate Books Life Stories

In an age when celebrities have turned the act of coming out into an empowering media event, Paul Lynde certainly seems like a campy relic of less-liberated times. This view of Lynde as an out-of-step, self-loathing queen of queens overlooks the man's great, if accidental, achievement: getting away with being gay on TV on an almost daily basis for years. During his three decades as a popular character actor on television, film and the stage, this fairy forefather's arch and bitchy wit snuck regular doses of the queer world into that bastion of intolerance, the American living room. Lynde showed mainstream viewers that a gay man could deliver the jokes, not just be the butt of them. In doing so, he helped make homosexuality more palatable to unwitting viewers who simply saw him as a stylish, funny man. Biographers Steve Wilson and Joe Florenski draw on revealing interviews with friends from Lynde's childhood, college days and adult years-including stars such as Phyllis Diller, Charlotte Rae, Cloris Leachman and Peter Marshall, who worked with Lynde in Broadway productions and in film and television. What emerges is a memorable portrait of a man who reaped his share of wealth, enjoyed a fair amount of fame and basked in the adoration of thousands of fans-but paid a price in hardship, heartbreak and hangovers.

Steve Wilson met co-biographer Joe Florenski while researching an article on Paul Lynde for Out magazine in 2000. He ran across Florenski's website devoted to Lynde. Begun in 1997, the site contains exhaustive resources on Lynde, and Florenski has lent research support to both E! and A&E's Biography for their segments on the comedian. Wilson and Florenski worked so well together on the piece for Out that they decided to collaborate on a book.

3 out of 5 stars Not great, better than I expected.......2006-09-18

A friend once described me (as well as another friend, her husband) as a "child of the media". Not surprisingly, celebrity biographies are one of my literary junkfoods. Many of them are padded out magazine pieces or promise scandal, but deliver pablum, and many promise depth but never get beyond some "Cliff Notes" version of Freud. "Center Square" is relatively short and published in a small format, with fairly large print--it won't take long to read, but there's more here than than just an oversized magazine piece. The biggest drawback to the book is that it appears to have very little first hand information, although many longtime friends and colleagues of Lynde's were still alive when it was written. The book doesn't have much about Lynde's early life and some of the reason becomes evident near the end (he was not close to his surviving brother and his surviing sister denied his homosexuality and, otherwise, seemed a bit eccentric). Still, Lynde frequently retuned to his home town and stayed in touch with people more than one would expect from a guy who couldn't wait to leave. There are various quotes from Robert Osborne, Cloris Leachman, Kaye Ballard, and other who knew Paul for many years, but none of these people is acknowledged among the sources, which are largely from print archives. The relationship of some people who are quoted can be vague--it's unclear how a person so concerned with his own fame developed relationships with struggling actors and we are told that some characters like Dan Dittman and Paul Baressi were somewhat shady without much explanation (Baressi is probably the most easily documented--a porn director and star, who was part of an "outing" of a major movie star later to recant his relationship to the star; he has a new book in development). One guess is that Lynde met some of the minor characters as hustlers or hangers-on.

Perhaps because the book lacks first hand contacts with people who knew Lynde, some aspects of his character don't really come together. He had a horrible temper when drunk and alientated many colleagues, yet Lynde seemed to remain friends with many people over the course of several decades. He sounds like someone who would have been difficult to work with, yet he had a successful tv career over a relatively long period of time. Many other popular guest stars from 1960s variety shows and sitcoms had vanished by the late 70s, yet Lynde remained in demand. He never fully accepted his place as a supporting player with limited range. Hollywood is full of people who happily and lucratively play the same character over and overa again, yet Lynde wanted more. What he wanted, though, really isn't clear from the book. On the dinner theatre cicuit, Lynde played the leading man and there isn't a really good explanation what that didn't translate to other media. The simplest explanation may be that a little Lynde went a long way and a single performance every summer in light comedy isn't the same as a regular sitcom or a feature film.

It's clear that Lynde was a deeply unhappy and lonely man, who only seemed to be getting some aspects of his life together near the end. The authors place him as a transitional character in the evolution of gays on television, which seems right. He fit an era where one could wink about sexuality and telegraph alot to those "in the know" without offending people who would be put off by anyone truly playing gay. Doing this meant playing sexually ambiguous or asexual supporting characters who provided comic relief. It's evident that he slowly and sometimes subtley moved away from the pretext of heterosexuality and probably could have adapted to a more open era, although probably as a the gay uncle rather than the bachelor uncle, and not as a major star. Lynde comes across as a socially and politically rather conservative man and one wonders what he would have made of the era of AIDS and gay rights that came after his death.

Center Square: The Paul Lynde Story is the true biography of Paul Lynde, well-known for his three decades of appearances as a character actor on TV, film, and stage. A popular actor known for his portrayal of a gay persona long before Ellen, Rosie, or "Will & Grace", Lynde dared to sneak doses of slanted wit into American living rooms during a noticeably more straight-laced era than today. In addition to Lynde's boisterous professional life, Center Square offers a glimpse into Lynde's tumultuous personal life, including his struggles with alcohol, his ever-changing love affairs, and his notoriously explosive temper. For all his flash, wealth, triumphs, and weaknesses, Lynde stayed true to himself - certainly a feat in Hollywood. Enthralling from first page to last.

2 out of 5 stars Not a fun read, not an overly enlightening read.......2005-10-23

Warning: This book is written in a sassy/sarcastic Entertainment Weekly house style knockoff that is something of an acquired taste (call it straining to be ironic and hip and funny and only occasionally succeeding at any of the above). One is tempted to shrug it off and say the style perfectly fits the subject, a past master at cutting sarcasm and the tangy retort, but I think far better of Paul Lynde than that. When HE tried to be funny, he usually hit bullseye. (Note to the authors: That's because he didn't really have to try.) Ultimately, because of the style in which it is told, the telling of this tale doesn't grow on you, it wears on you.

That out of the way, I fault Center Square more for being an unsympathetic and overly gossip-reliant portrait of a true comic original than for being gratingly written. The authors preface their book with a note of gratitude to Lynde for always being true to himself. Sounds promising -- and reasonably respectful. But very quickly, the grim and peevish bio devolves into umpteen stories of "club crawls" and posh dinner parties turned into ugly drunken scenes, with Lynde making a fool of himself before falling down drunk in the gutter, or alienating some friend for the last time.

If you take the authors at their word, this seems to be all Lynde was about. Which raises a question: if that's true, why write the book, why read the book? Why would we even care if this is all there really was to Lynde the man? We are subjected to the dark side, the miserable, insecure, nervous, neurotic, alcoholic side, in cascades of blunt and bruising detail. But the writers seem unacquainted with the real sense of joy and accomplishment that must have accompanied the triumphal moments of Lynde's life, such as his signing on to play Harry Macafee in Bye Bye Birdie. (Gower Champion was so sold on Lynde's talent, he begged him to join the cast and made good on his promise to see to it that a tiny role was rewritten to give Lynde plenty to do.) For whatever reason, they never linger long on the "up" moments of Lynde's life, and don't seem to know how to amplify them.

The emphasis on and repetition of awful scenes in this "life story" prompts me to agree with another reviewer that the definitive Lynde bio has yet to be written. This isn't a biography, it's a collection of really juicy gossip that apparently has been making the rounds for years now. (I can't tell you the number of times the authors preface a story with a "legend has it" or "rumor on the street is that" type of disclaimer.)

Center Square contains some good information, but not much more than the magazine article that is the genesis of this book. I hope someone, somewhere-- more a bona fide journalist or biographer, capable of balance and new insight and gravitas than a couple of wisenheimer supermarket magazine writers -- takes on Lynde's story. Until then, this book is at best a second rate tide-me-over hors d'oeuvre. I really hope it doesn't totally kill the appetite of those waiting for the main course of a better book on the topic.

Two and a half stars of five.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly written with little insight. .......2005-10-14

I thought this book would be interesting; it is not. It is poorly written, story lines are not developed and even when it does cover an interesting topic, it just falls flat.

Paul Lynde had to be more interesting than this book makes him out to be. I would suggest it only if you have trouble falling asleep at night.

1 out of 5 stars Why is this a book?.......2005-10-12

I read a lot of biographies, and this was pretty lame to say the least. To me, it would have been better off ending up as a two page People magazine article.

I would have liked to have known more about Paul Lynde and what made him tick beyond his only being a mean drunk. There just isn't any substance to this book. It never goes into much detail on his friends or short term lovers, only touches on his career moves, and basically leaves you wondering what this man was really all about. The quotes from Cloris Leachman, Charlotte Rae and the others are usually one liners and it seems as if they were obtained through a 30 second phone call. There are a couple of teasers like the spat with Jonathan Winters, yet it never discloses why the spat progressed or even what it was about. You're just left with this empty feeling of "Why am I reading this?"

Paul Lynde was never an A-List star, and this book sure isn't an A-List biography. I finished it, but it wasn't easy. I maybe chuckled twice during my reads, and then you remember that Paul Lynde didn't even write his own answers on Hollywood Squares. This is a boring book for a man that seemed to have led a boring life.

                      Book Description

The scandals, cat fights, temper tantrums, and felonies of more than 100 celebrities are revealed in this chronicle of the most notorious faux pas of the rich and famous. All kinds of unflattering provocations and outrageous reactions are detailed, including what pushed Diff'rent Strokes star Gary Coleman over the edge and inspired him to slug a fan more than twice his size; how Mia Farrow found out boyfriend Woody Allen was sleeping with her adopted daughter and what she did to exact revenge; and what single sentence caused Elton John to nearly ruin his lifelong friendship with an equally famous singing star. Humorous and opinionated, this book examines cases of star-struck fits of passion that scuttled movie and music projects, destroyed relationships, and changed the course of entertainment history. Movie stars, singers, politicians, sports sensations, fashion models, and other wealthy and privileged famous faces are exposed, including Marlon Brando, Naomi Campbell, Bill Clinton, Russell Crowe, Michael Jackson, Madonna, John McEnroe, Ozzy Osbourne, Elvis Presley, Dennis Rodman, Britney Spears, and dozens more.

Shocking, silly, stupid, scandalous. With a subject like Celebrity Tantrums, who needs fiction? This book is well researched and thoroughly entertaining. The author's playful sense of humour makes even the most obnoxious celeb an entertaining subject. A great read!

I don't trust anyone who says they don't like gossip. It's just not normal. For the rest of us, the vast majority who take secret pleasure in the titilating faux pas of the rich and famous - Lisa Brandt has something for you! Celebrity Tantrums is the most entertaining read you're gonna find - without having to delve into the "adults-only" section anyway! So many stories of how stars get away with the most unusual (and down right naughty) behaviour. I don't know where the author dug all this stuff up from? Either she's a genius at research, or perhaps she has celebrity stalking issues?
If you want to be the hit of your next social engagement, this is a must have. Finally, a book that's as entertaining as any prime-time celebrity gossip show on network televison. Whether you read it all at once, or pick your favourite star's story first, you will eat up every juicy detail from each one of these sordid moments in lives of Hollywood's elite. Lisa has uncovered events that must be certainly turning the hair of the celebrity PR folks gray.
For those of you who claim you don't like gossip - bookstores sell dust jackets in a variety of different designs. Who are you trying to kid anyway?
