I am a budding watercolorist and this is a great reference book on technique and application. I find inspiration in the illustrations and cannot wait to apply them to my next drawing/painting.

This is an outstanding book. The author goes into detail on how she creates the effects in her illustrations. Many of her ideas and techniques can be carried over into other subject material. This was one of the best art instruction books I have purchased in regards to watercolor and ink. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for insight on creating wonderful textures with this media. However, I would suggest reading reviews of the author's other books to select the subject matter you like best before deciding which one to get because there is apparently some overlap.

Very good book to have if you're an artist.......2007-06-05

I have almost all of the photo reference picture books with the exception of Boats and Nautical scenes. I consider this book a very good one, because it gives you a wide variety of subjects to choose from, arranged in groups. For example, he will have photos of weathered barns, of houses of different periods, etc. Browsing through the photo reference books I'm sure of finding something that will inspire me. The advantage of these photos is that they were taken by an artist, with artists in mind and that makes a big difference when using them as subjects for a work of art.

Great Artists Visual Reference.......2004-09-10

Artist's Photo reference is a compilation of over 400 photos of architecture from barns to wharves which artists can use for painting or other graphic illustration. Included are 6 painting demos and examples of techniques to use when creating your very own masterpiece. I particularly liked it that the author addresses copyright issues and how to make photo collages to create your own graphic aids. This is a must for artists who like to use photos for more photo-realistic paintings and who do not have access to their subjects.

As far as I know, this is the only publication in English available on Saenredam, one of the great geniuses of Dutch art. It is very well documented (especially on the provenance history of each work), beautifully illustrated (the illustrations include his very rare drawings) and a must-have for anyone interested in Dutch painting of the Golden Age. Saenredam does not just paint churches; he captures the light, the air and the soul of XVII century Holland.

Brilliant, Magnificent , and Serene.......2002-08-01

I first ran into the paintings of Saenredam on a visit to the Netherlands five years ago, and was fascinated by his work. The brilliant use of perspective and the draughtsman-like quality of his work really appealed to me. In it's painstaking quality, it reminded me somewhat of Northern Rennaisance painters. Yet the subject of these works was quite different. Saeredam's church interiors and exteriors have a serenity to them quite different from anything else.

I was very disappointed upon my return to the states because I could find little if anything about this great painter. If you've done a search here, you've seen that the only other books on Saenredam are out of print and hideously expensive.

I was overjoyed when I heard the Getty was bringing in the first major show of Saenredam's works in 40 years. I ordered this catalogue as soon as it was available. I was not disappointed.

This book features excellent reproductions of preparatory drawings and finished works, along with commentary that is interesting to the both the lay audience and those with more expertise. I heartily recommend it.

Qing China (1644-1912) witnessed a resurgence in architectural painting, a traditional subject category known as jiehua, or boundary painting. Drawing Boundaries concerns itself with the symbolic implications of this impressive and little studied reflorescence. Beginning with a concise and well-illustrated history of the evolution of the tradition, this exciting new study reveals how these images were deployed in the Manchu (Qing) imperial court to define political, social, or cultural boundaries. Characterized by grand conception and regal splendor, the paintings served to enhance the imperial authority of rulers and, to a segment of the elite, to advertise social status. Drawing Boundaries thus speaks to both issues of painting and architectural style and the discourse of powerful cultural forms. In addition to the analysis of how the style of image construction suggests these political and social motivations, the book identifies another aspect of traditional architectural representation unique to the Qing: the use of architectural representation to render form and space. Anita Chung makes the fascinating observation that these renderings create an overwhelming sense of "being there," a characteristic, she argues, that underscores the Qing concern for the substance of things--a sensibility toward the physical world characteristic of the period and emblematic of a new worldview.

Handsomely illustrated, Drawing Boundaries is the first full-length study of an important tradition of premodern Chinese art and architecture. It presents a thoroughly researched examination of Qing architectural painting (including a number of translations of little-known texts) as well as a means of placing these works, frequently dismissed as merely gorgeous renderings, into a cultural context. Here is a major contribution to the field of Chinese art and architectural history and a welcome avenue of understanding for historians of Chinese society and politics and those with an interest in material culture.
