A truly beautiful book and wonderful gift!.......2007-01-09
This visually stunning book fits perfectly in little hands and is filled with stimulating images that children love to look at over and over again. It's printing quality is exceptional and it's by far the best introduction to art for this age group that I've seen. This would make a wonderful gift for any preschool home.
PERFECT.......2006-04-29
Good for all art lovers not just children - but a very, very, good way to introduce your little ones early on to the beautiful and amazing world of art.
bringing modern art to the fingerpainting crowd.......2006-04-26
What a pleasure it is to find a book worth relishing again and again for it's clever use of words and graphics arts to foster in young children a love of modern art. Like a quick trip to MOMA snuggled up on your own sofa, your toddler may become familiar with concepts and visuals that can only enrich their love of color and (and simple words which they soon memorize and "read" along with you) and entertain their imaginitive spirits. For your budding Warhol or simply the art lover in you, here is a fantastic exposure to modern art that allows your child to explore, to learn and laugh all at once.

Book Description
Peter Travers, film critic and senior editor at Rolling Stone, has compiled reviews of the 1000 best film DVDs available. With an irreverent tone and an eclectic scope, Rolling Stones 1000 Best Movies on DVD was compiled on the premise that theres room for Citizen Kane and Dodgeball in the same list. It details best bonus features (actor, director, commentaries, deleted scenes, new endings, and surprises hidden on the disc); reviews all aspects of the films and the quality of the DVD transfer; and includes Hot Bonus notes designed to let the reader know which segments will show off their DVD player and surround sound to greatest advantage. Full of fun factoids to know and share, Rolling Stones 1000 Best Movies on DVD is the book no movie lovers library will be complete without.

Must have for online movie renters.......2007-01-05
I bought this book because I wanted to take full advantage of online movie rental services. "1,000 Best Movies on DVD" is a great resource for selecting movies from the large libraries available from online service providers.
A great review book!.......2006-11-18
I loved this book and recommend it highly. My only caveat is to have some time set aside to read through it. I was up for hours and hours, reading his reviews of movies that I have already seen, remembering the highlights of great movies. I couldn't put it down. If you love movies, and if you love your DVD machine, this book is a match made in heaven. Buy it. Buy it now.
great source of info.......2006-03-04
Give you ideas of things to watch that you may not have considered.
The best movie review book. Period........2006-01-26
I have several other movie review books and they're all sitting on the shelf collecting dust. So I approached this book by Peter Travers with some reservation. Not to worry, this is the only movie review book that matters. Here's why:
1. Travers likes movies for the same reason you and I like movies. He's not trying to come across as a cinema professor. He clearly doesn't give a hoot about a film's rep with other critics - there are so called classic movies that aren't here and there are many others (e.g. Die Hard and Independence Day) that other critics would never include in a book of the best. When he uses terms such as "eye popping colors" and "gives your home theater system a real workout", it's clear that he likes movies like we like movies. Don't think for a second, though, that, based on those examples, this is oriented to modern action flicks. Every genre and every period is well represented. It's just that, for Mr. Travers, "good" doesn't HAVE to mean "old" or "foreign".
2. Unlike other books which critique at least 5000 movies (often much more), Travers has done the filtering and focuses only on what he considers to be the very best films, especially focusing on those that come across the best on DVD. I love that approach. Why waste ink and paper (and your time) to review crap like "Jaws 3" and "Nash Pluto"? By just focusing on the good stuff, Travers has a lot more space to explain why the movie is good. That makes every page in the book essential reading.
3. He has wisely avoided a star system which just gets readers upset wondering why their favorite movie didn't get more stars. It also doesn't try to put them in order from 1 (best) down to 1000. He clearly thinks all these movies are pretty terrific and, by simply listing them in alphabetical order, it encourages you to read about them all. That ends up putting a lot more DVDs on your "must watch" list than you otherwise would have.
4. Travers is a really entertaining writer, often quite funny too. These aren't cerebral pontifications, they come across as musings from a regular guy who happens to love movies. So that makes this more than just a reference book, it's one you really enjoy reading cover to cover.
5. He does an excellent job in explaining why a movie is worth watching. For that reason, you'll have a much better idea whether each movie is one that you really want to see. In many cases I could see why Travers was so impressed with the movie, but his detailed description made me realize it's just not my thing.
The worst thing you can do is dismiss a book like this on the basis of the movies he left out (or included). Face it, no two people are going to have the same views on 1000 movies so put the quibbling aside in advance. This book is not meant to be a list, it's meant to help the reader find great DVDs to buy or rent. After reading this, you're certain to have ticked off at least 150 DVDs that you really want to see. And you will have been greatly entertained in the process. What more could you want from a book of this type?
Makes a mistake about Bruce Lee.......2006-01-14
When describing Enter the Dragon it claims the film is Lee's first speaking English. Wrong! Lee spoke english before in a movie he made with James Garner and Caroll O'Conner a few years before. Good enough book outside of thsi though I disagree Brando was so ultra-great in On the Waterfront and bad in Superman.

Customer Reviews:
I haven't found a better movie critic........2004-04-10
I don't always agree with Berardinelli's assessments, but his reviews always tell me why he rated a movie a particular way and give me the information I need to make my own decision. The reviews are well written, concise, and show both an appreciation of movie art and an understanding of movie entertainment.
I've read reviews from just about every critic available in print or on the Web. James Berardinelli's reviews are the only reviews I read every week.
it's about time.......2004-01-11
I don't always agree with his likes and dislikes in movies but I admire his writing and arguments/critique. His writing style is simple yet witty and caustic.
Eeep.......2003-12-27
One of the most successful on-line critics, James Berardinelli is also one of the worst. This tome is every bit as accessible as his anti-art, grammatically incongruous and theoretically un-provocative reviews. Not to completely dog the guy. I'm sure he edits most of his own reviews for his website. Here he seems to have found an editor or two. Compare any one review in the book to the review as it appears on his site. They're still not very special, but at least they make more sense. Strictly for fans.
perfect companion to the video store.......2003-09-10
Granted that the reviews published in this book are available online, I am still quite pleased to own a copy of the book. You can't access the web when you go to a video store while it's easy to carry Berardinelli's book. It saves me time browsing through movie titles that I may be interested to watch.
The title index is very helpful since he grouped the movies by genre. James Berardinelli is one of the best, if not the best, online film critic out there and it's about time he gets his work published. His reviews are very insightful and well-written. Although I wished he included some bad movies, those tend to be the humorous reviews.
Doesn't live up to its potential.......2003-08-25
I'm a frequent reader of Berardinelli's website and eagerly awaited this book. However, after reading it, I've lost some of my enthusiasm for the book. It's a print version of the website, with one thousand reviews of his favorite films included here. That's the first problem--there's nothing more here than what's already offered free of charge online. Second, the format would be more user-friendly if the reviews were ranked alphabetically, and not just by category.
Next, Berardinelli uses "star" ratings on his website, but neglects to include these in the book. Instead, the book has cryptic text descriptions at the end of each review, such as "recommended," "highly recommended," and "must-see." If you're just browsing through the book, you might see "recommended" and think this is Berardinelli's highest recommendation without knowing better. Since he doesn't use a numerical rating system, the "star" system we're all used to is gone and what's left doesn't make sense.
The book would be relevant to more readers if there were a greater variety to the choices here (as there is on his website). The reviews included in this book are only for Berardinelli's favorite movies (if there's a movie he doesn't like, it's not in the book). The movie choices should be more diverse, not just the thousand films Berardinelli likes the most (I can think of several good films that are absent from the book, because they get low ratings on his website). By including only the reviews for films he likes, the book omits movies that might be interesting to people other than him. In other words, if you don't want to read about the author's favorite movies, don't buy this book.
Another problem is that the reviews are printed here word-for-word as they appear on the website, without any updates, and some of the same typos appear. In addition, the forward by Roger Ebert isn't anything the veteran film critic hasn't spoken or written about already, especially in the essays linked from Berardinelli's site. One would think that his name appears only to help sell copies. Why would somebody want to buy this book when the identical reviews can be found on his website free of charge?
In the end, I expected more from this book than what was delivered. Reviews could have been updated and (in some cases) expanded, instead of giving us a carbon copy of Berardinelli's website. Berardinelli, an electrical engineer by trade, has been praised for the sheer quantity and diversity of films he reviews, as well as the speed in which he posts reviews of new releases. This book seems to swim against the tide of each of these claims to fame. Bottom line: save your money and surf the website for free.

Destined for Obscurity.......2001-06-18
This book is an interesting collection of writings and speeches by conductor and erstwhile composer Pierre Boulez.
It has three parts. The first (200 pages) consists of pieces that deal with Boulez' attitudes and philosophy about composing and music. His theories are intellectually interesting, but devoid of musical inspiration. It seems that his low reputation as composer is well deserved.
The second part (also 200 pages) is the most edifying. He displays a deep understanding of the intricacies of the orchestra, and the interpretation of other composer's works. It demonstrates why he is such a reliable conductor.
The third part (100 pages) is the least interesting. It is a collection of personal memories and reminisces.
As a writer, one admires his courage in tackling subjects (like artistic taste) that so obviously open him up to ridicule. Few composers have explained their thought processes in a way so clearly understandable to the layman better than Boulez.
In summary, one comes to the conclusion that Boulez will be remembered, if he is remembered at all, as a conductor who produced some top notch recordings of Stravinsky and Debussy, and some mediocre Wagner operas.
modernist compendium of a composer/conductor.......2000-04-07
I cannot add much to the other reviews, this is the full weight of Boulez from both worlds as conductor and creator of theory and music. Boulez always found inroads into the theory of his works, like the indeterminate, aleatoric Third Piano Sonata which includes an analysis here, great reading from tis documentary value. Also reflections on Debussy's Jeux, a seminal work for the post-war generation of composers, the epiphanic, the slow introduction of materials and their appraisal. The problem is that Boulez writes quite tersivily, in short bursts, much like the sonic poet he is. Also the work on Wagner's Ring is discussed quite well, the approach to faster tempi, and Wagner's free form almost leitmotiv, where these musical ideas float through. There is also much on administration, on creating IRCAM, and reflections on where Booulez came from, profiles of Desormiere,Hans Rosbaud, Hermann Scherchen. Boulez would frequent their rehearsals, a hands-on non credit education.
The essential tome of the modernist musical dialectic........1999-08-07
For anyone even remotely interested in the world of contemporary music and the volcanic changes that Pierre Boulez spearheaded in that conservative world from the 50's to the present, this is the essential book--a manifesto outlining the hopes, ideals, problems and successes that we face in the modern musical world. Every subject is covered here; from extensive essays and polemics to recording sleeve notes to interviews and tributes to musical colleagues and friends, Boulez leaves no subject untouched. What may seem at first dry and forbidding turns out to be, upon powerful and deep immersion, an inspiring and even moving text and 'calling' for the modern musician.
An essential insight into the cutting edge of composition.......1999-04-20
Orientations provides unique and fascinating insight into the ideas of Pierre Boulez over 4 decades. With the recent release of Repons on Deutsche Grammophon, listeners will be delighted to examine the thought behind the highly beautiful, shimmering sound of his recent works. We learn here that Boulez has set out to break down the barrier between the composer and the audience, a crusade which he continues to fulfill in a characteristically exemplary manner. It is particularly interesting to observe the persistance of particular problems and solutions in the composer's work (such as spatialisation, the setting of texts, the integration of technology), and to bear in mind how these ideas have developed, from works such as Poesie pour pouvoir, to the 1993 version of explosante-fixe.
A sort of modernist bible, Orientations deserves to be re-printed. Indeed, it is to be hoped that the composer will produce a new volume in the near future which will include discussion of Repons, explosante/fixe, and Sur incise, and perhaps take stock of the whole gamut of postmodernism, the minimalists and the like.
A difficult, though highly rewarding look at music........1998-07-19
Boulez's Orientations is a substantial collection of essays, liner notes, and reviews written over several decades. His prose is clear and concise (much like his conducting) and his topics cover a wide range. He discusses topics from Beethoven to Stockhausen and even "the elliptical geometry of utopia." Though frequently a tad verbose and difficult to comprehend, this book provides hours of stimulation and intellectual challenge for the hardcore musician and the layman alike.

Book Description
The Pedagogical Contract explores the relationship between teacher and student and argues for ways of reconceiving pedagogy. It discloses this relationship as one that since antiquity has been regarded as a scene of give-and-take, where the teacher exchanges knowledge for some sort of payment by the student and where pedagogy always runs the risk of becoming a broken contract. The book seeks to liberate teaching and learning from this historical scene and the anxieties that it engenders, arguing that there are alternative ways of conceiving the economy underlying pedagogical activities.
Reading ancient material together with contemporary representations of teaching and learning, Yun Lee Too shows that apart from being conceived as a scene of self-interest in which a professional teacher, or sophist, is the charlatan who cheats his pupil, pedagogy might also purport to be a disinterested process of socialization or a scene in which lack and neediness are redeemed through the realization that they are required precisely to stimulate the desire to learn. The author also argues that pedagogy ideally ignores the imperative of the conventional marketplace for relevance, utility, and productivity, inasmuch as teaching and learning most enrich a community when they disregard the immediate material concerns of the community.
The book will appeal to all those who understand scholarship as having an important social and/or political role to play; it will also be of interest to literary scholars, literary and cultural theorists, philosophers, historians, legal theorists, feminists, scholars of education, sociologists, and political theorists.
Yun Lee Too is Assistant Professor of Classics, Columbia University. She is the author of Rethinking Sexual Harassment; The Rhetoric of Identity in Socrates: Text, Power, Pedagogy; and The Idea of Ancient Literary Criticism, forthcoming; and coeditor, with Niall Livingstone, of Pedagogy and Power: Rhetorics of Classical Learning.
