Intimate and stylish.......2006-08-08
I really enjoyed this book. I could pore over the fashions, the interior decoration - it satisfied my desire to see all the details! At the same time, I got a sense of the passage of time in Virginia and Vanessa's lives. Read as a companion to any of Woolf's novels, I think the book would also convey a sense of the writing process.
It evokes the time and place beautifully, and the text is not intrusive: the images are allowed to take centre stage as works of art in their own right.
Fine choice, Sweetpea!
I'm in between.......2006-04-17
Nutty yet poignant
Have we found the smoking gun here? I doubt it
Bloomsbury has a posse!

Art and Poetry Travelling Together.......2006-06-01
Like its subject, this book combines art and literature in a wonderfully unpretentious yet tasteful fusion. The artwork in this book, like haiku itself, is deceptively simple, evocative while minimalist, and humorously serious. Very down-to-earth, it yet has the uncanny ability to uncover the magic and enchantment of what we usually take to be mundane, humdrum everyday reality.
The title is just a bit on the deceptive side. A good number of Takebe Socho's haiga artworks are included and he is indeed a significant focus of the book, but the works of many other haiga artists/haiku poets are included as well. The first work is in fact by the great haiku master Basho himself in the 1600's, and the last by Shimomura Izan in the mid-twentieth century. And in between we have a number of Basho's followers, Yosa Buson and his followers, and then Kobayashi Issa and later poets up until the modern period--including such major Buddhist monks as Hakuin Ekaku, Sengai Gibon, and Nakahara Nantenbo.
The introduction does a fine job of discussing the relation between this art form and haiku, touching on the influence of Zen in a clear-headed manner that acknowledges their common ground while distinguishing them with care. The history of haiga and its characteristics are also explained well, and Yamamoto Fumiko gives us a good short study of Takebe Socho. Furthermore, all of this is helpfully keyed to the artworks included in the book, of which there are roughly fifty-two, plus some reproduced in color as well here and there. Each illustration also comes with a short commentary discussing the different elements of painting, poetry, and calligraphy along with their interaction--sometimes this discussion verges on the fanciful and flighty, but this is no great sin.
To put it simply,
This is a really nice book.
You'll like it a lot.

A book for your backpack.......2001-03-04
One copy of this elegant book lives in my backpack. On a 15-day walk through Wales, I used the 15 tenets -- around which the book is organized -- one each day, as the focus for that day's experiences. Holmes's Zen tenets enriched this hike immeasurably. The insights connecting text, art, and haiku are freshly realized with each meditative dip into this timeless book.
Deeply beautiful, timeless book........2000-01-13
I bought my copy of this small treasure fifteen years ago, and few books have ever worn so well. It is as fresh and beautiful for me today as when I first read it. The book is divided into fifteen chapters, each devoted to a central tenet of Zen Buddhism, which is then elaborated upon through the presentation of several Chinese or Japanese paintings and a number of haiku, all of which are masterfully related to the tenet through a simple prose explantion. The tone is often light and playful, but the insights are profound, and the various parts of the book flow together flawlessly. It is a true pleasure to have and to read. You can't go wrong here.
Great book.......1998-12-12
Mr Holmes lives here in my town. It helps to be able to talk to him. The ideas are universal and transcend time.
Enlightened reading.......1997-04-07
A wonderful little book, for those intertested in zen and haiku and Asian art. We in introduced to the inter-connectedness of the haiku poets and the paintings, which reflect the spirt of enlightenment. Contains many of the great haiku of the past. An excellent starter book for someone who is curious about zen, and also a fine refresher course for the long-time student of Eastern thought. I've bought many copies as gifts for friends. Highly recommended
Book Description
Some 120 haiku by such masters as Basho, Issa, and Buson—all written on themes of the mountains, forests, rivers, and rugged seascapes of Japan—are combined with the woodblock prints and paintings of the great artists of classical Japan. The poems appear both in skillful English translation, as well as in the original Japanese.

Ah -- "Sun, Wind, Rain, and Snow" on oceans, mountains, forests and rivers by such greats as Issa and Buson. The prints are just lovely and I had to overcome the temptation to steal it from the hostess serving me tea...

Seems great at first..........2007-07-10
A Net of Fireflies is a disappointment to anyone looking for a great compilation of the best Haiku. Beautifully bound and decorated, including many wonderful full-color paintings that bring the haiku to life, the appeal of this book comes to a screeching halt after reading only one or two pages. Originally written by Japanese masters, Harold Stewart's translation of these poems turns almost EVERY ONE into something resembling a cutsie-poo children's rhyme. Two brief, rhyming lines--many with exclamation points!! You can never shake the feeling that you're not reading haiku, just some Englishman's lame poems. If you're expecting quiet dignity, subtle playfulness, or the elightened rhythm of direct translation, this is not the book for you.
RHYMING COUPLETS are forgiven by 'meaty' Essay . . . ? .......2006-09-16
The Australian poet Harold Stewart (1916-1995) wrote the scholarly essay which is a large part of this book, "Net of Fireflies," published in 1960. It could be the basis of preparation for a unit study on HAIKU for elementary grades. My preferred preparation would be a seminar of adults, perhaps in tandem with an introductory course in the Japanese language? Not practical, but there is more-than-enough 'meat' here to digest alone!
The revered poetic form of haiku may be a disappointment to persons who don't hear the music - rhythm - poetry in their oh, so brief syllables. Stewart must have felt he was doing those readers a huge favor by NOT translating, but realigning the ideas (of Basso, Issa, Buson and other luminaries) - into these rhyming couplets which are called "verse translations" on the title page, & 'explained' by the author in the latter part of his essay. Converted to Shin Buddhism, he lived in Japan the last 29 years of his life.
Readers who dismiss haiku don't have an inkling of the fascinating 'ingredients' & philosophical dimensions. This is a handsome book: slip-case and double pages suggest special treatment for the poems. The 'haiku paintings' are the work of many artists, reproduced for this collection. They are called 'haiga' - the "pictorial counterpart" of haiku, and including the original poem. They of course enhance the appreciation of the poems; their spare strokes have the amazing ability to suggest elaborate constructions. They draw in readers from amateur to scholarly, contributing to their understanding of what the Japanese call "mono no aware" - or, the "AH-NESS."
It was a whimsical haiku of Buson that inspired the title & frontispiece for the book. Reviewer mcHAIKU is certain that lovers of haiku will GLEAN (see IMAGE of 'gleaner') pleasure from almost any thoughtful collection. 'TRY YOUR HAND' at writing some. Doing this with a mix of generations & cultures will bring enormous satisfaction. Whether writing or reading, watch your imagination take flight, and experience a glorious lift-off.
Gentle - Quiet.......2005-02-23
A perfect way to escape the hurry, noise and irritation of our lives is to make a cup of jasmine tea, curl up and read selections from the 320 haiku poems in A Net of Fireflies. A beautiful book to hold - the cloth covered hard cover, silky-feeling pages and lovely haiku paintings make it a sensual delight. It even has a shell to store the volume in , which makes it seem even more special. This is one of my favorite books.
The beauty of haiku utterly lost in translation.......2001-01-28
When I finally got my hands on this book I could hardly wait to open it. When I did open it, it was like biting into a rotten apple. The "translations" turned these beautiful poetic gems into cute little rhymes. The haiku paintings are quite lovely but the book is a tragic misunderstanding of haiku poetry. Please do yourself a favor and buy a copy of Issa's "The Spring Of My Life & Selected Haiku" translated by Sam Hamill.
Standing at Customs (5 syllables) . . ........2000-03-24
I have owned a copy of this book since before I left High School, so long ago. I possess a cloth bound 1st Edition from 1960, with full color illustrations. Many are jealous. Every girlfreind I have ever had, has sprayed a touch of her perfume on a single page, and this was for the admiration and love that I have for this book. And for the memories of my life. The translations of the Haiku, I beleive are the best ever done - of any Haiku, hands down. Harold Stewart may not have been aware of his powerful contribution when he put this out. I have carried this book to every corner of the world and accidentally abandoned it in a hotel in Nome, Alaska. I flew back up for it later. I left it in a rental car in Felixstowe, England. Again, I returned for it. This book has saved my life many times over and has helped me through many dark moments.

Book Description
The Lefcourtland Archives is a growing retrospective collection of Lefcourt's best work spanning the past decade. Each volume is a ninety page bound archive of panels, selected for their timelessness and general appeal.
Book Description
Updated with brand-new entries to describe the most recent major motion pictures, this critically-acclaimed volume spans more than a century of moviemaking, concisely describing 1001 of the best films from around the world. New in this edition are entries to describe such film hits as Lord of the Rings, Mystic River, Farenheit 9/11, and Million Dollar Baby. But in fact, this volume's team of critics goes back to 1902, describing such films as The Great Train Robbery, and progressing chronologically across the decades to cover the best cinematic dramas, comedies, westerns, musicals, suspense and horror films, gangster classics, films noir, sci-fi epics, documentaries, and adaptations of novels and stage plays made by filmmakers around the world. Each entry includes a full list of cast and credits, awards won by the film, an essay summarizing the story line and screen-history, and still shots of the film's memorable scenes. At the back of the book, both an alphabetical index and a genre index will help readers find any film they're looking for. Movie fans will find descriptions of great musicals like Singing in the Rain, westerns like High Noon, science-fiction classics like Star Wars, dramas like Chinatown and Schindler's List, and international classics from master directors who include Fellini, Antonioni, Resnais, Truffaut, Eisenstein, Kurosawa, and many others. Here is a volume that belongs in the personal library of film buffs, movie reviewers, collectors of DVDs-and every reader who enjoys reminiscing over great movies of the past and present. Hundreds of movie still shots in color and black and white. "... a great motivating guide to cinema. After reading one of its engaging, often profound entries on a missed film, you want to ... rent it. Best of all, it includes international, silent, animated, and recent films."
--Dallas Morning News
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction to cinema.......2007-09-10
First of all let me begin by stating that I've put off reviewing this canon for some time. I see no justification to review a book like this until one has consumed most of it. At present I have seen 823 of these films and feel now that a review is justified.
I believe that of all the books in this series this is the strongest entry although not gospel. This canon or list of films is an excellent introduction to cinema, it gives you the basics to develop a well rounded appreciation of all cinema beginning in 1902 with George Melies' "Le Voyage Dans La Lune" right up to the present day. As would be expected in concentrates a lot on American cinema when it was a force to reckoned with. It does not overlook all the important movements like German expressionism(1920s), Socialist realism (1920s), French poetic realism(1930s), Italian neo-realism(late40s-early50s), Film Noir and all the New Wave movements in the 1960s from Britain, France, Italy, Japan and Eastern Europe. It continues in the 1970s where there is a lot of attention to New Hollywood directors as well as New German cinema which were making a massive impact at the time. After that it moves into blockbuster territory in the 1980s which is to be expected. It was a period which is not held in much regard by cineastes but is a part of cinema's development. From the 1990s onward one begins to notice how important films seem to come from all over the world and not concentrated in one area. As would be expected the last few years are open to debate, evidence of which can be seen in the fact that every time the book is revised it's those last few years that are shuffled around.
So what you got is a skeletal view of cinema which allows you to flesh it out. This book is the introduction to cinema, the yellow brick road to the Emerald city if you will, to becoming a film buff. Once you've seen 50% of these you'll already be an above average film fan. After you've completed this list it's time to move onto the Jonathan Rosenbaum 1000 which I believe will take you way way beyond.
There is however one serious flaw with the book in that it is jam packed with spoilers. So proceed with caution.
A book to be owned.......2007-06-19
Great book. Start your motivation of seeing all the titles in the book. I question about 10% of the selection in the book, while I am pleasantly surprised another 10% were selected for their uniqueness. At the same time, I am surprised some films, actually about at least 100, weren't selected. Great pictures, nice essays, but it's the titles that you want to know. Movies not selected are (I won't list them all): "The Last Emperor", "Point Break", "9 1/2 Weeks", "Brain's Song", "Boys Don't Cry", "Harlan County USA", "Escape From N.Y.", "Like Water For Chocolate", "The Miracle Worker", "River's Edge", "Straight Out of Brooklyn", "Year of the Dragon", "Kids", "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", "Zorro, The Gay Blade", "Swingers", "Tremors", "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?", "After Hours", "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures", "Body Double", "El Mariachi", "First Blood", "Play Misty For Me", "The Set-Up", "Snatch", "Wild Things", "Birdman of Alcatraz", "The Limey", "Sudden Impact", "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles", "Ghost World", "Just One of the Guys", "Carnival of Souls", "Leaving Las Vegas", "An Officer and a Gentleman", "Clear and Present Danger", "Days of Thunder", "Predator", "Citizen X", "Bad Influence", "Ghost", and "A Fistful of Dollars".
Didn't say they were the greatest!.......2007-05-25
I think this is a great book and I really enjoy reading through it's pages, but that is not the main point of my review. I want to clear up what I see as a misconception of the book that I see in a lot of reviews. This is not the "1001 Greatest Movies Ever Made" or "1001 Most Important Movies Ever Made"; it's 1001 movies you should (must) see to get a very well rounded sense of movies and their history. Some movies in the book are included just because they are great, others because of their historical niche in movie makeing, some because they illustrate a certain style, and some for pure entertainment they give. Movies with different types of animation are included and well as a broad spectrum of foreign movies. Think of this book as a watch list for a very in depth cinema appreciation class. Some of these films may not be great, some may not even be entertaining, but all are important, or illustrate an important part of cinema history.
Good book for a movie lover!.......2007-03-08
Bought this for my Dad for his birthday. He loved it. It's a great coffee table book.
My personal bible..........2007-02-10
I've had this book for about a year now, and it has truly become my own personal bible. As other reviewers have pointed out, the book spans the past century's film history and includes movies from well-known Oscar-winners to more obscure, independent gems. One thing I love about this book is that it does a fine job at keeping the list neutral -- there aren't more American-made films than foreign ones; there aren't more recent films than older ones or vice versa; there aren't more popular films than relatively unknown ones; there aren't more comedies than horror films, dramas than sci-fis, etc.
The included short essays/reviews on each film are concise and informative for the most part, though I must say it bugs me that some of them give the ending or crucial plot details away. The photos are all gorgeous and make this book a nice one to keep on display on your coffee table.
At the beginning, the book states that one of its goals is to make passionate film lovers out of casual filmgoers, and for me, it accomplished that goal with flying colors. Over the past year, I have become an ardent movie buff and lover mostly from watching at least seventy-five of the excellent films included in the book -- I've yet to encounter one I haven't at least liked. As I said, this book has become my bible and it's never far from my reach -- practically every weekend I find a new movie to rent/buy and immensely enjoy. It'll definitely make a believer out of ya!
The editor also notes that although 1001 movies might seem like an exhaustive list, it quickly becomes apparent that it's really not big enough. There are so many great movies out there (way more than 1001, trust me), but this book serves as an excellent introduction (and then some) to the world of film. Highly recommended to those interested in seeing great movies.

Book Description
This unique collection of essays brings together for the first time consideration of Virginia Woolf's writing within the political context of fascism. Virginia Woolf and Fascism probes Woolf's fiction and non-fiction from Mrs. Dalloway in 1927 to Between the Acts, in 1941, for her responses not only to the growing menaces of dictators abroad, but also to mounting evidence of fascist ideology at home in England. The essays present a portrait of Woolf as a woman writer who was politically engaged, and actively protesting against a worldview which aggressively targeted women for oppression.
