5 out of 5 stars The Other Half of the Renaissance.......2007-08-25

Books on the Renaissance can be quite confusing to non-specialists. For example, Shakespeare classes in English schools discuss him as a Renaissance writer. Yet art teachers describe his near contemporary, Rubens, as the quintessential Baroque artist!
So exactly what does Northern Renaissance Art cover? Is it an age that can be separated, marked out and surveyed by political or religious activities? And by northern what is meant? Is Switzerland the home of northern art? Can it be made in Italy? And what makes it significant and different from the universally recognized world of Italian Renaissance Art, where the term 'art' is always capitalized?
Well, the truth lies pretty much with all of the above. As Snyder shows, several distinct cultures fall into this very large historical category. If you're buying this book as a student for a class, I can only hope you have more than one semester to give to the material. Northern Renaissance Art covers an enormous time period and many countries. It approaches in diversity the far better known works and ideas of the Italian Renaissance. No one seriously discusses the Italian Renaissance in a single semester - the material is taught in a series of classes. The same limitations and requirements should apply to teaching the Northern Renaissance. Art history today no longer focuses on aesthetic questions of style; as a result a student faces a lifetime's study of a period's culture and history.
However, there are some basics. If one word could define what separates the two worlds of the Italian and Northern Renaissance - that word would have to be naturalism. Northern European artists revel in achievements of realism that far surpass the Italians, who, while perfectly capable of such stylistic work, prefer a more intellectually formalized approach. Indeed, Michelangelo dismissed northern artist's attention to nature and care for photographic details as incidental, and excessively ephemeral, when contrasted to his Italian art which used images for projecting deeper spiritual values. The public, however, was delighted with the landscapes, and their non-abstract openness. Many artists from the north specialized in landscape, and it became a manner so associated with them that it was not uncommon for Italian painters to hire Northern artists to fill in the 'less important' landscape backgrounds of their larger canvases.
The Italian Renaissance differed also in that it was singularly connected to the revival and reappreciation of ancient 'pagan' works of art. These antiquities provided a challenge, as well as a reawakening, for the artists and thinkers of Italy. In the north artists did not have at hand magnificent works of ancient architecture or sculpture: as a result intellectual challenges were quite different; though initially tied to the Italian thinking, the northern artists more and more shifted focus onto their own immediate world. As the fifteenth century closed they became attuned to newer discoveries from the exploration of new (not ancient)worlds by sea, and the individuals emancipation brought about through the beginnings of Protestant thought. For moderns this means that the Northern Renaissance often appears closer to us and our own post photographic record of the world. The artist's sense of intimacy with nature seems little different than what most of us know as landscape art. Their religious works also convey a striking ease with space less contrived than our eyes find the representation of space in most Italian painting of the same era. All made the more attractive for being so accessible. Some of this difference marks profound religious and philosophical differences - northern art has about it some of the fervor of emancipation - there is here a reflection of the Armana naturalism revolting against the old art of a more dogmatic less individualistic Egypt. Eventually Italian artists would adapt to this new naturalism, especially in the north of Italy in Venice, in the works of Bellini, Giorgione, and Titian.
This book introduces the reader to the early Flemish master painters, such as Van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, the later great German artists, such as Durer and Holbein and Grunewald, and the strange inner universe of Bosch. Topping off the age are the works of one of the grandest of all humanists, Pieter Bruegel the elder. And these are just some of the great painters! There remains a wealth of sculpture and architecture, drawing and craft work. Moreover, the Northern Renaissance is also an artistic universe filled with fresh new theories and a milieu profoundly effected by the great religious upheaval of the Reformation.
Snyder gives as good an overview of so much material as one could hope for - his work replete with an enormous number of images, many of which have for nearly half a millenium been accepted as iconic. The text treats the material with a practised consideration, born of many years study. However; the impetus of the book is to direct the reader further afield, and this is indisputably the author's greatest achievement and the point of such a survey work. The real jewels for readers will be enlarging these discoveries by travel and on site awareness, these efforts made more satisfying through study of specific texts directed at the new artists whose work transforms your view of what the Renaissance was.

    Book Description

This broad-reaching collection of essays constitutes a thorough introduction to the fields and methodologies concerned with studies of textiles and dress of the Middle Ages. New themes and critical viewpoints from many disciplines are brought to bear on the medieval material in the areas of archaeology, art and architecture, economics, law, history, literature, religion, and textile technology. The contributors address surviving objects and artifacts and interpret representations in texts and images. The articles extend in time from the fifth to the sixteenth centuries, and cover Europe from Scandinavia, England, and Ireland in the north, to Italy and the Mediterranean basin in the south. Emphasis is placed on the significant role of trade and cultural exchanges as they impact appearance and its constituent materials.

5 out of 5 stars cohesive & encompassing view of medieval textiles.......2003-07-22

As is the case with many books compiled from excellent work created by diverse authors, this book could warrant a review of each chapter. The book covers the fifth through the sixteenth centuries, from Ireland to Italy and the Mediterranean, and is compiled into three sections based on date(s) covered by the articles.

This tome discusses the distinctions of levels of society as delineated by clothing, the development of the textile industry, and the use of textile analogies in period literature. It examines textile depictions found on monuments, in sculpture, in paintings, and on manuscripts. But in its fourteen chapters this volume manages to convey a cohesive and encompassing view of textiles in the medieval period. It offers the reader not only interesting facts, but the authors' excellent work convincingly connects the dots so as to give clothing a life of its own in the context of the times.

Chapters such as Dressing the Part, From Content to Form and Marie de France's Bisclavret deliver both sides of the coin: we are what we wear as well as wearing what we are entitled due to class structure. Without clothes, Bisclaveret is a wolf, un-recognizable; with clothes he is a nobleman, although Gloria Thomas Gilmore discusses the balance of both sides of the coin. Does form follow function, or is function a result of the form?

In Christ as a Windblown Sleeve, Margarita Yanson explores the changing costumes within Gottried von Strassburg's Tristan where changes in clothing mark the complexity of the main character, Tristan. Simularly, in As Proud as a Dog in a Doublet, Linda Anderson sees costume as an integral part of the play. On the other hand, The Margaret Fitzgerald Tomb Effegy comments on the strong nationalism in the dress of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, when adherance to national norms was seen as akin to patriotic act, and changing one's dress could be seen as treason and situates the effegy within the context of the time.

The chapters written by the editors are pivotal and act to anchor the rest of the book. Snyder's work discusses not only the sculpural forms in the column-figures and document seals in great detail, but in discussing the dress pictured from England to Germany it provides both an overview and excellent detail. Inserted between two chapters that draw from literary sources, the sharp images of the columns offer the mind a break as the detail is made visible to the eye as well as to the mind. Désirée Koslin's chapter touches on materials, dyes, weaving, finishing and meaning of cloth and clothing. Even through its title the final chapter is an overview and a case study. In many ways, it rounds out and sums up the book in a very satisfactory manner.

From art and legal manuscripts to archeological evidence and period documents the authors describe dress and its importance in great detail. The rich description plus the illustrations paint a lucid image of the clothing of the time in detail suitable for recreating the costumes discussed, while the discussion of the meaning of such explores timeless issues regarding the role of clothing and cloth in society and the lives of individuals. Black and white images throughout illustrate the chapters, and a seven page glossary makes terms that may be unfamiliar to some understandable without reaching for the dictionary, and a comprehensive index makes revisiting bits of information a breeze. Although this book is aimed at the student of the medieval period, and specifically at someone interested in the dress of the period, those interested in philosophy and dress in general can see parallels throughout the ages making this a book of value. Reading this book has made me think about dress more closely, not only in a historical context, but also while people-watching, and in movies such as the Matrix trilogy where dress has layers of meaning.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Tips and techniques, lacks scope.......2002-08-20

The author does a great job in showing detailed instructions on painting with oils miniatures of ancient military subjects. Of all the military figure painting manuals I have read, this is the best. It does a great job in showing intermediate steps along the way.

My only complaint is that I wished he showed more examples. In particular, in the last chapter he shows a beautifully finished templar Knight finished in a white sur coat. However, there is no discussion on how the normally difficult to apply white color was painted.

His color mixing diagrams are useful for a new painter.

Note that there is no discussion on painting with acrylics or enamels.

This has been a big year for Roger Ebert. In January 2005 he received TelevisionWeek's Lifetime Achievement Award, and this summer he will be honored with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. It seems only fitting that his Movie Yearbook is annually regarded as the best place to turn to learn about and choose a movie. The 2006 volume contains all Ebert reviews written from January 2003 through June 2005. That includes blockbusters such as Million Dollar Baby and The Aviator along with surprise hits like Sideways, and such moving films as Hotel Rwanda and Vera Drake. (Oh, yes, and Brown Bunny as well.) Roger Ebert's Movie Yearbook 2006 also includes all Ebert interviews and essays for the year, the biweekly Questions for the Movie Answer Man, and Ebert's well-respected film festival coverage.

If you're a moviegoer, you NEED Roger Ebert's Movie Yearbook. The 2006 edition covers films from January 2003 to June 2005 (almost 700 reviews according to the book). But it's not just movie reviews, it also has interviews with various movie stars and directors.

What I really love about this book is the style of writing Ebert uses. His style of criticism is fantastic which is why I admire his work. Not only is he a fantastic critic but he is an inspiration to writers all over the United States.

I did enjoy this book. I could not put it down, literally. If I closed the book and put it back on the shelf, two seconds later, I was looking up another film. I highly recommend it to EVERYONE -- especially moviegoers. I don't see how they can live without owning this book. "Roger Ebert's Movie Yearbook 2006" gets a well-deserved 5 stars.

I really enjoyed reading Roger's reviews. He's not just a movie goer; he's also obviously a reader. If the movie has been based on a book, you can bet he's read the book. His reviews have prompted me to seek out movies I might not otherwise watch.

                              5 out of 5 stars Roger: My Go-To Guy.......2005-12-25

A Christmas tradition, I read this book all year long and reference the earlier books often as well when doing research, picking dvds, arguing with fellow movie buffs and often just for intelligent writing and interviews. He os not the only critic that I read, but he is the one that I read religiously and after all these years I am sure of what he means when he writes a review. I am fond of the EW crtics but they are often at odds, abd I can count on Mr Ebert's books to steer me in the direction that best suits my taste. This book is, as always, invaluable and a great read. I don't findthat he has mellowed with age as much as his tastes have grown and matured as he has, and we all refect the changes in our lives. Roger is not the same person perhaps as he was 10 years ago, but then neither am I. Love this book, and love his earlier yearbooks as well!

3 out of 5 stars AIN'T WHAT HE USED TO BE..........2005-12-12

With all due respect, the passion and meticulousness that used to be found in Mr. Ebert's movie reviews are fairly much long gone.

These qualities began to fade from his work beginning in the early 1990's, but we must credit him for being on top of things for approximately 25 years (he began reviewing movies in the late 1960's). That's a heck of a long run and an accomplishment that Mr. Ebert can be darn proud of.

But don't misunderstand; I'm glad he's still around, championing passion and meticulousness, despite the fact that these qualities have been absent from his own work for about a decade and a half.

But I also want to say this: Ebert is quite a bit better than roughly half of the movie critics that are on the scene today.

I recommend Mr. Ebert's movie guide, but please don't restrict your attention solely to Mr. Ebert. There are other movie guides on your local bookstores' shelves that are superior to his. And don't forget to cruise the web for a number of very good movie critics that are at the height of their game, i.e., movie critics whose work contain plenty of passion and meticulousness.

5 out of 5 stars ROGER EBERT IS THE GREATEST FILM CRITIC EVER!!!.......2005-12-03

Roger Ebert, who has been writing print-reviews at the Chicago Sun-Times since 1967, has revitalized and changed the way we look at cinema.

When Gene Siskel and he took a job reviewing movies on a nationally syndicated TV show, they trademarked the phrase "Two Thumbs Up!"

I'm sure there are people who don't know what reviews will be in this edition, but it ought to contain (based on the timeline on the back of the book) not just **** (4 star) reviews like THE AVIATOR, MILLION DOLLAR BABY (Ebert's pick for Best Film of 2004-which won the Oscar for that honor), HOTEL RWANDA, SIDEWAYS and VERA DRAKE, but also good movies like THE BROWN BUNNY (Vincent Gallo's controversial vanity fest that Ebert initially panned at the Cannes Film Festival in 2003!), and OCEAN'S TWELVE, as well as mediocre films like I ROBOT and SUSPECT ZERO, and terrible films like SLEEPOVER and THE VILLAGE. These should all be new to the annual movie yearbook.

These, and other films from January 2003-June 2005 will appear, including such gems as BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS, CELLULAR, MILLIONS, ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW, PALINDROMES, MELINDA & MELINDA, CRASH (my favorite film of this year), BAD EDUCATION, ALEXANDER (Ebert gave **), and others.

NOTE: The frustrating thing about Ebert's Movie Yearbook is that it somehow is missing something. If you look at the index, it has all the films published in the series of yearbooks (that's true). However, it DOES NOT have the reviews and commentary, best film lists and so on from every year since 1967. When Ebert finally switched his webpage to [...], I was happy to see that you could finally access all of his writings going back to his beginning as a film critic.

Now if only we could get his print reviews back onto the printed page. I suggest he release a series of Decade by Decade Film Review Guides, which will have all of his writings from 1967.

                              Suggested titles:

THE 60s: 1967-1969 -- would contain every review, interview, best film list, festival report, etc. from his beginnings as a film critic to the end of that decade, including PERSONA, EASY RIDER, COOL HAND LUKE, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY and many others.

THE 70s: 1970-1979 -- would contain every review, interview, best film list, festival report, etc. from the beginning of the decade to the end, including such gems as MASH, MCCABE & MRS. MILLER, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (**!), NASHVILLE, TAXI DRIVER, MEAN STREETS, ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE, INTERIORS, APOCALYPSE NOW, etc.

THE 80s: 1980-1989 -- would contain every review, interview, best film list, festival report, etc. from the beginning of the greed era to the ushering in of special effects pictures, including RAGING BULL (the best film of the decade within the decade's first year!?!), AFTER HOURS, ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA, BLUE VELVET (*!), WALL STREET, TALK RADIO, and DO THE RIGHT THING, among many others!

THE 90s: 1990-1999 -- would contain every review, interview, best film list, festival report, etc. from "the best mob movie ever" (GOODFELLAS) to "the best movie of 1999" (BEING JOHN MALKOVICH), and everything in between, such as MAGNOLIA, DARK CITY (best film of 1998), BOOGIE NIGHTS, FARGO, NIXON, NATURAL BORN KILLERS, CASINO, HEAVEN & EARTH, SHORT CUTS, NAKED, MALCOLM X, CITY OF HOPE and MILLER'S CROSSING, among many others. This was the most vibrant decade for Ebert's writing, and it would be wonderful to see it in print.

Now this decade is only half over, so I would have to suggest something a little radical:

EBERT'S GUIDE TO THE NEW MILLENNIUM: 2000-2005 -- which would contain his reviews, festival reports, interviews, top ten lists, etc. from Oscar winner for Best Picture GLADIATOR (**!) to THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN, from REQUIEM FOR A DREAM to GANGS OF NEW YORK, from really terrible films like LOVE & SEX to CATWOMAN and CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS, and many others. This would be a wonderful addition to any film lover's book collection.

A nice bonus would be not just a guide to every review either per decade, per book, or every review from 1967-2005 at the end of each book, but also a guide to that decade's Siskel & Ebert/ Ebert & Roeper ratings (thumbs up/thumbs down) from the beginning of the series (in the 70s, I think?) to the current format. They could even denote the episodes where a guest critic took part!

The only thing I would request about the FORMAT of this series of books, would be to keep it as close to the review format in the paper/website as possible. That means TITLE, star rating (with/without year of release), the by line / theatrical release date (date of print), the review and cast & credits at the end with the actors/participants on camera, the director(s) and writer(s) credits, and the MPAA rating and running time. If it's a foreign film, it should say if it's in another language with subtitles, which I don't believe his current editions do.

I THINK ROGER EBERT IS THE GREATEST FILM CRITIC EVER!!! If anyone can make a book or series of books this relevant and worth while, I believe he can. Now let's cross our fingers and hope he listens to me!

Edward Elgar is among the greatest of all English composers, and this major biography, the culmination of twenty years' work, is probably the most complete and perceptive study of the composer to date. Drawing on the vast amount of source material, much of it previously unpublished, Jerrold Northrop Moore presents Elgar's life and works as inseparable parts of a single creative career. This classic study, unavailable for many years, is here reissued as a Clarendon Paperback.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive biography of an enigmatic composer........1999-12-07

Kudos to Oxford for bringing this classic back into print! Jerrold Northrop Moore worked for more than 20 years to write this definitive biography of one of Britain's greatest composers.

Using primary sources that range from Elgar's musical sketches and scores to letters, diaries and contemporary reviews, Moore shows how a self-taught violin teacher from a provincial English town created such masterpieces as the Enigma Variations, the Cello Concerto and the Dream of Gerontius. All this at a time when the vogue for Brahms and other Continental composers made it hard for even well-connected British ones like Arthur Sullivan to get their orchestral works heard.

Moore describes in fascinating detail how Elgar shaped and reshaped each major work, sometimes over a period of years--the Second Symphony took almost a decade to compose. He also explores Elgar's complex personality. Uneasy about his middle-class origins, he often played the role of a bluff, country gentleman, but his music is more like that of a British Tchaikovsky--extravagant and restless, with a powerful emotional charge.

As Elgar's story unfolds, the whole artistic life of late Victorian and Edwardian Britain is conjured up. Moore traces the composer's friendships with Hans Richter, Richard Strauss, Fritz Kreisler, George Bernard Shaw and Augustus Jaeger, the editor at Novello's who recognized and nurtured Elgar's genius.

This new biography of Elgar draws on letters and documents which have become available over the last twenty-five years. Michael Kennedy, a leading scholar of British music as well as a distinguished musical biographer, uses the new material (including Elgar's vast personal correspondence) to analyze the composer's complex personality. Elgar's letters reveal his unpredictable swings of mood, from gaiety and a fondness for puns to morose self-pity and a feeling that he was "not wanted."

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction .......2007-07-03

I have had a longtime interest in the music of Sir Edward Elgar but I never knew very much about the composer or a great deal about his music, for that matter, other than his main works. With the 150th anniversary of Elgar's birth I thought it was time to learn more about his, and this book by Michael Kennedy was everything that I wanted.

Mr. Kennedy's biography is well-written and nicely illustrated. He does not go into a lot of technical detail about Elgar's music which is appropriate in a general life and I can get additional detail, if I want it, from the internet. The author provides an excellent portrait of Elgar with all of his subject's complexities. The general view of Edward Elgar is that he was a proper Englishman and his music reflected the glory of empire and the so-called Edwardian period. Nothing could be more false. Elgar enjoyed and was influenced more by German music than anything else and he was very insecure about his stature as a composer, probably because he came to composition without much formal training. He often threatened to give up music altogether as a way of gaining sympathy and he would have bouts of psychosomatic illnesses, such as problems with his eyes and throat.

Mr. Kennedy's book provided me with an excellent introduction to all of Elgar's music and led me to investigate other works such as The Black Knight, the String Quartet and Quintet. He also relates events in Elgar's life but does not push the reader to any critical point-of-view or speculation. I came to some of my own conclusions: it seemed to me that Elgar's daughter Carice was rather neglected by her parents (for example, they did not attend her confirmation) in favor of her father's moods and temperament. One could also speculate about Elgar's relationship with Alice Wortly (his Windflower who was the Muse for his Violin Concerto and Second Symphony) and his late-in-life affection for Vera Hockman. I enjoyed reading about the recording of the Violin Concerto with the 16-year-old Yehudi Menuhin and with how much regard Elgar held this recording.

This is a very appealing and highly readable book that is an excellent introduction to Edward Elgar's life. After reading the book, I have pursued further reading - a more in-depth study of the Enigma Variations and the Cello Concerto - but this is a great volume to have and keep as a reference.

                                    Book Description

Covering the contextual and taxonomic diversity of cannibalism, this book explains its costs, benefits, and consequences for a taxonomically broad distribution of species from lower eukaryotes to higher primates. The authors, all experts in their taxon of interest, use theory developed for the analysis of foraging, sociality, demography, and genetics to assess the ecological and evolutionary causes and effects of cannibalism. The emerging picture from recent research challenges the view that cannibalism is either abnormal behaviour or an infrequent addition to the predator's usual diet.

                                              Book Description

Throughout his career, Elgar sought confidants in the publishing world, and when he found someone to whom he could open his heart, the letters that followed were among the most arresting ever written on the creative life. In this comprehensive collection, Jerrold Northrop Moore has gathered
every letter of importance between Elgar and his publishers, including for the first time the correspondence between Elgar and his finest friend, the publishing manager of Novello, A.J. Jaeger--"Nimrod" of the "Enigma" Variations--as well as the letters Elgar wrote to Alfred Littleton, the chairman
of Novello, to Keith Prowse, his final publisher, and to many others. These letters reach far back into the creative process, often to the formation of ideas and projects, providing a rare record of the vital relationship between a composer and his publisher.
