This is one of my favorite books on symbols
only thing is the description or title of the symbol
is listed at the beginning of each chapter I found it
annoying always having to flip back but still love this
book
Very Interesting.......2006-12-23
I am primarily interested in Christian symbolism and this book has quite a few, though not meant as an exhaustive resource on any particular set of symbols. I enjoyed the broad range of symbols this book presents - Mayan, Egyptian, metaphysical, Asian, and even some hobo symbols (plus lots more). This book is truly a good general reference for symbol meanings. It is a bit sparse on the origins of the symbols, but certainly supplies enough information to get my interest piqued in different symbols!
A Wonderful Collection of Symbols.......2001-10-03
Dover Publications scores yet again! This book hits a home run with bases loaded for many reasons.
First, it is jam-packed with thousands of symbols, signs, marks, inscriptions and engravings. All are in black and white, and all are excellent quality.
Second, the book presents a fascinating range of symbols, organized by subject, including: Symbolic Gods and Dieties (included are Egyptian, Assyrian, Greek/Roman, Nordic and Aztec Gods), Astronomy and Astrology, Alchemy, Magic, Church and Religion, Heraldry, Japanese Crests, Cattle Brands, and a large section containing some of the distinctive marks of the medieval european craftsman/guild marks and signets.
Third, this is a surprisingly useful reference. For writers, historian, artists, and the incurably curious, here is a book that sets out, for example, all of the alchemical signs for the materials (gold, silver, etc) and alchemical processes, a host of Catholic and other ancient christian religious symbols, nice engravings of all the important Egyptian gods, etc etc.
Highly Recommended.
A thorough collection of symbols, signs, and signets..........2001-03-08
This book has over 200 pages of various symbols, ranging from simple drawings to intricate designs. They are arranged in historical order, begin with various gods and end with hobo signs. Each chapter is preceded with a list of references (the signs are identified by number) and the symbols included are grouped like so:
Symbolic Gods & Deities; Astronomy & Astrology; Alchemy; Magic & Mystic; Church Religion; Heraldry; Monsters & Imaginary Figures; Japanese Crests; Marks & Signets; Watermarks; Printers Marks; Cattle Brands; and Hobo Signs.
There are over 1350 illustrations contained in this book, and all are crisply printed in black and white. Each section has a short blurb in front of it, but not an extensive history. This book would appeal to history lovers, graphic designers, and other symbol geeks. And for the price, it's worth buying.
No one-day checkout for me!.......2000-05-12
The books in the Dover Pictorial Archive series offer aninsurmountable number of clean black-and-white plates, usuallyfollowed by a caption detailing the original materials where the plates originated. Unfortunately, Symbols, Signs, and Signets doesn't have captions at the bottom of the page, instead making do with an page-by-page index at the beginning of each section. Otherwise, this volume includes symbols from quite literary all over - astrology, alchemy, religion, signatures, cattle marks, and many others. The book is excellent for hatching new interests, probably because most of the intriguing images have uninspired captions. A worthwhile purchase, if you are interested in this sort of thing. Quite cheap, too. END

Book Description
Grandfather Bader begins this book in a facetious manner. When you read on you will discover a serious message--that disrespect for life can, and does, bring down the mightiest of nations. He is not a professional historian or author, but a man who has spent 91 years interested in all aspects of life, especially art, history and the religions of the world, and, not the least, political matters. This book will give you his evaluation of events in history written by authors and historians down through the centuries. He does not dispute what these writers of great intellect and vast education, distinguished in their particular field, have written, but he finds great holes in some of their theories, and his intention is to point this out.
Book Description
In this compelling book, Robert Coles, the celebrated Harvard professor and Pulitzer Prize–winning author, turns his attention to popular music legend Bruce Springsteen, and to the powerful impact Springsteen’s work has had both on the lives of his audience and on this country’s literary tradition. Coles places Springsteen in the pantheon of American artists—Walt Whitman, William Carlos Williams, Dorothea Lange, and Walker Percy, among others—who understood and were inspired by their “traveling companions in time,” the ordinary people of their eras.
With wisdom and a unique personal perspective, Coles explores Springsteen’s words as contemporary American poetry, and offers firsthand accounts of how people interact with them: A trucker listens to “Blinded by the Light” during long, lonely nights and reminisces about his mother; a schoolteacher is astonished when a usually silent student offers a comparison between “Nebraska” and Conrad’s Heart of Darkness; a policeman responds to “American Skin (41 Shots),” reflecting on his own role in his family and community. As these people, and others, candidly discuss the meaning Springsteen’s words have in their lives, Coles listens and, with the special insight and compassion that are the trademarks of his art, sheds new light on “The Boss,” removing the legendary American rock musician from fan-filled stadiums and placing the poet in a greater social, cultural, and philosophical context. Coles sees Springsteen as a representative of a uniquely American documentary tradition—as a sing-ing and traveling poet who does not simply embody the culture of which he is a part but fully engages it, interacting with its people and creating a conversation that has helped to shape a distinct way of looking at, and living, American life today.
Customer Reviews:
Caveat Emptor: This Book Probably Contains Fabrications.......2006-06-22
Robert Coles is a retired Harvard professor and psychiatrist who has spent his adult career documenting American life from a psycho-analytic, quasi-religious perspective. Coles and Bruce Springsteen are actually real-life friends. Springsteen even played a benefit concert to help save Coles' documentary magazine, "DoubleTake" [Full Disclosure: I worked for this magazine for four years. Despite Springsteen's incredibly generous support, the magazine still folded]....
Yet this book reads as if Dr. Coles has never even met the Jersey rocker, much less listened to his music. The Springsteen in these pages is merely a cultural abstraction, some hazy caricature who fits into Coles' own ideas about documentary work. If this book is evidence, Coles is not one of those "people listening" to the poetry sung by "Broooooce"....
I have no personal axe to grind with Dr. Coles. He is a wonderful teacher and usually a profound storyteller. My criticism here is harsh only because this particular book is THAT BAD. It's written in a tired and lazy manner, and it's probably dishonest. But don't judge Coles as an author based on this work alone. Other works by him are brilliant and moving (check out "Children of Crisis" or "The Call of Stories" if you're curious).
Coles is considered by many to be a "guru" for documentary work and studies in this country. But to a growing number of critics of his recent work, this is an ironic distinction. This book smacks of fabrication. Here Coles has a bad habit of making the quotations of his subjects sound too much like his own voice. And it seems that he always has at his fingertips just the PERFECT quote coming from the many famous observers he has known over the years (ranging from Dorothy Day to Walker Percy to Robert F. Kennedy). You would think Coles must have discussed every subject under the sun with these people to have such a catalog of quotable remarks. And when Coles quotes everyday people, they sound like characters from a 1940s Frank Capra movie, offering up corny, John Doe colloquialisms in response to that rascal, "The Boss"....
For more on suspicions of fabrication, a lengthy review article in "The New Republic" magazine at the time of this book's publication formally labeled the charge at Coles. Another review in "The Vilage Voice" newspaper called this the "worst book ever written about Bruce Springsteen" regardless of its veracity.
For a more entertaining and thorough take on Springsteen's place in music and popular culture, I recommend "Born to Run" by Dave Marsh. I also highly recommend Eric Alterman's heartfelt "It Ain't No Sin To Be Glad You're Alive" to appreciate the impact Springsteen has made on his fans (Alterman being one of the more rabid ones).
Town full of losers.......2005-02-21
With so much great potential in this project, it's a shame it had to be so terrible. Can you imagine if the author had talked to people who had a functional understanding of Springsteen's music, instead of just people who were like, "Yeah, I listened to him back in the eighties! 'Borrrrn in the USA!!!'"?
The author is remarkably uninteresting, and his subjects not much better. Even the cop, commenting on "41 Shots," could have been engrossing had they picked a more interesting cop. This one was just like, "How? How could be betray us?" Not even giving a moment's consideration to the real question of whether they were betrayed or whether those cops really were racists and murderers. Would have been nice to at least touch down on that point.
Don't Bother.......2004-11-26
I don't know what this book was supposed to be, but reading about how someone argues with his wife using Bruce Springsteen's lyrics is a waste of paper.
Born to Run -- far away from this book!.......2004-07-26
My god, this book is awful. How can a "celebrated Harvard professor and Pulitzer Prize-winning author" write such a pretentious, embarassing, ridiculous, overwrought, narcissistic/self-centered, rambling, poorly edited (was it edited at all?), unreadable piece of drivel? Perhaps Coles was looking to cash in on the popularity of "this guy they call 'The Boss,'" or perhaps he was trying to get away from his Harvard ivory tower and slum it for a bit with a few "average Americans," showing what a down-to-earth guy he really is? Unfortunately, those "average Americans'" comments and thoughts, as presented here by Robert Coles, end up as little more than incoherent ramblings which shed no light and provide little if any insight into Springsteen the man or the artist. Is this why Springsteen tries so hard to control what gets written and said about him? So that books like this don't ever get written? My advice to any Springsteen fans (or anyone else) out there thinking about buying this book: you were Born to Run -- far away from this godawful book!
Fact or Fiction?.......2004-05-24
I should have listened to my first instinct not to get this book when I noted a Harvard child psychiatrist wrote it. But when you're a fan you suspend disbelief in order to hear what other "average Americans" have to say about Springsteen's work. I agree with one reviewer, Coles book sounds like Cole writing what he thinks common folk think about Springsteen's songs. Either that or he has worked with the people featured in the book so much, they have taken on his voice. I finished the book not out of fascination for what the people said (some of their insights and observations had me wondering if they really listened to the music or perhaps took some bad college literature classes), but out of what seemed strange similarities between the interviewees. They are purportedly from different walks of life and parts of the country, and yet, if you read through, you will find they have similar ways of phrasing ideas, ways of speaking they hold in common (that are not in keeping with how most people speak), and similar rhythms to their speech. It had the feel of coming from the same Harvard educated author and not interviews of different "common folk". I'm not going to accuse Coles of fabrication, rather of embellishing the stories (heavily) with his voice and his ideas. Beyond the question of authenticity, the interpretations and visions of Springsteen's songs in this book are soulless in my opinion. They do a poor job of exploring the teenage angst of his earlier work, the worker/adulthood angst in later work, and the angst of his favorite topic - societal misfits and deviant's. When one of the interviewees in the book states that the songs Nebraska and Johnny 99 are trying to get you to feel sorry for the main characters - it goes to show how far off the mark the interviewee and Coles are.

Customer Reviews:
THE END OF TIME.......1999-09-10
This is the thrid and final book in a often detailed and sometime glossy overview of the last decade of the Doctor - the 1980's. The book chronicles the end of Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor and the rise of Peter Davidson as the 5th and the decline and fall of the series with Colin Baker (who in my book was never given the chance or the material to really shine) and Sylvester McCoy. The books gives behind the scenes details into the stories, the people, public intrest (and sometimes disinterest), as well as ending chapters on all the merchandise (with layouts and cool pictures) produced during the 1980's. As a whole the entire collection is a must for every Doctor Who fan, on it's own, the material is solid, well written and worth the price. The only downside perhaps is that the material can get a bit thin in places, and sometimes leaving wanting to know more. But this is not very often. Pick up the 1960's first to really get the full effect.
