Book Description

Often the finest artists do not make the best teachers. Many frustrated college students of art know this all too well as they suffer through unstructured classes with inexperienced teachers or graduate student instructors. In these situations, it is easy to blame the teachers. But the problem is largely institutional: most students graduating with MFAs from art schools receive little if any instruction in teaching art. If you find yourself in this predicament as teacher or student, this book is for you. The first book to provide a comprehensive guide for teaching college-level art, The Art of Teaching Art is the culmination of respected artist and instructor Deborah Rockman's two decades of teaching experience. Believing that drawing is the backbone of all of the visual arts, she begins with a complete explanation of drawing concepts that apply to any subject matter, e.g., composition, sighting processes, scaling techniques, and methods for linear and tonal development. She then illustrates these concepts with step-by-step methods that easily translate to classroom exercises. Next, she applies the drawing principles to every artist's most important and challenging subject, the human figure. After an extended section on understanding and teaching perspective that explores illusionistic form and space, the focus of the book shifts to the studio classroom itself and the essential elements that go into making an effective learning environment and curriculum. From preparing materials lists and syllabi, to setting up still-lifes, handling difficult classroom situations, critiquing and grading student artworks, and shooting slides of student artworks, she leaves no stone unturned. The Art of Teaching Art is the guide every new or experienced teacher of college-level art must have. Its helpful suggestions and numerous examples of student artwork from Rockman's classes will impart confidence to the inexperienced and fresh inspiration to the veteran instructors.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-09-20

Having taught classes as a graduate student and now, as a part time lecturer at a state university, I have found this text to be excellent as essential support, a course framework, and a terrific reminder of everything I need to remember in my own artwork, as well as necessary knowledge for my students. Teaching any art course necessitates thorough art knowledge as well as solid pedagogical skills, which most art graduate students and new faculty simply do not have. "The Art of teaching art" provides a strong resource for this unfortunate but common situation. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars excellent resource!.......2006-04-12

I bought this book while pursuing my MFA. I was in my first semester with a Teaching Assistantship and was freaking out! I was in the predicament of being able to make great art, but not articulate and teach it. This book guided me through my TA in grad school and now is the first text I consult when teaching my own classes. I taught K-6 Art Ed for a few years and was able to apply Ms. Rockman's instruction of composition, line variation, and scaling. Once I made the move to a University setting, her chapter discussing the classroom environment and how to facilitate critiques proved invaluable. Fine Art can be such a difficult area to apply grading scales. She offers criteria for making sound grading judgements on student work. Overall, I think every Grad student doing a TA and every art instructor should have this book. It's a solid foundation for beginning or improving your teaching skills.

I bought this book hoping for clues to help my high school students. It didn't happen. This book would be a good choice for college instructors.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for both art students and instructors.......2003-02-24

I am presently an art student working toward my degree in teaching college level art. This book is a wonderful source of information for both art students and teachers. The topics are covered very thoroughly and in an understandable fashion. Some of the topics covered in this book are: sighting (excellent content on sighting), principals of composition, value, space and depth, the human figure and anatomy, gesture drawing, portraiture, perspective (very, very well done), establishing a classroom environment, preparing group critiques, diagnosing problems in student work, suggested homework assignments, preparing a slide library, building a resume, and much, much more. Every chapter is extremely well written and contains a wealth of information. It presents a solid foundation for those of us who will be entering the teaching field of art, and for those of you already in it. This book will help you reinforce your art skills, along with prepare you for the ability to teach the knowledge that you have to others. I would give this book 10 stars if it were permitted.

4 out of 5 stars Teaching Assistantships Must Buy This Book!.......2001-09-03

This is really an essential book for any teaching assistant, especially if the feel overwhelmed with the task at hand. The book is aimed at educators, a gap that was left open by many other drawing books. Any faculty overseeing graduate students would be well advised to recommend this book to their students. I think that it has one of the strongest sections on teaching perspective that I have encountered. There is little however that encourages experimentation or media exploration. It does offer a clear approach to teaching perceptual drawing. The book also provides sample syllabi, a teaching philosophy, and examples of letters of recommendation. This may be the essential book for someone attending the College Art Assoc. for the first time.

This book is now out of print, but thanks to Amazon, it can be readily found, and more affordable than ever. My great-aunt helped the author with this important work, and I've learned so much about the cinematography of James Wong Howe, my great-uncle. It's a "must-read" for all students of film and cinematography. I'm so glad that the memory of JWH's life and work is preserved forever through Todd Rainsberger's exhaustive research and hard efforts.

            Book Description

Theoretically, the actor ought to be more sound in mind and body than other people, since he learns to understand the psychological problems of human beings when putting his own passions, his loves, fears, and rages to work in the service of the characters he plays. He will learn to face himself, to hide nothing from himself -- and to do so takes an insatiable curiosity about the human condition.

            from the Prologue

Uta Hagen, one of the world's most renowned stage actresses, has also taught acting for more than forty years at the HB Studio in New York. Her first book, Respect for Acting, published in 1973, is still in print and has sold more than 150,000 copies. In her new book, A Challenge for the Actor, she greatly expands her thinking about acting in a work that brings the full flowering of her artistry, both as an actor and as a teacher. She raises the issue of the actor's goals and examines the specifics of the actor's techniques. She goes on to consider the actor's relationship to the physical and psychological senses. There is a brilliantly conceived section on the animation of the body and mind, of listening and talking, and the concept of expectation.

But perhaps the most useful sections in this book are the exercises that Uta Hagen has created and elaborated to help the actor learn his craft. The exercises deal with developing the actor's physical destination in a role; making changes in the self serviceable in the creation of a character; recreating physical sensations; bringing the outdoors on stage; finding occupation while waiting; talking to oneself and the audience; and employing historical imagination.

The scope and range of Uta Hagen here is extraordinary. Her years of acting and teaching have made her as finely seasoned an artist as the theatre has produced.

This is a must-have for any theater afficionado, actor or not. Ms Hagen's engrossing history of the American theater alone is worth the price, and her very personal insights into character development are fascinating. The portion of the book devoted to the development of the acting craft is powerful, with exercises designed to develop a range of physical and emotional actions. With its themes of authenticity, concentration and hard work, this is a great handbook for both the novice and experienced actor.

            Book Description

Throughout her celebrated career as an actress, from her film debut as a Bond Girl to her starring role in the beloved television series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, and during the winding course of her life, Jane Seymour has been a testament to the rewards of embracing life's challenges eagerly and gracefully. Speaking from fifty-two years of experience with both joy and heartache, she firmly believes that "when we allow ourselves to see all changes as remarkable, some extraordinary things can happen to us."

Rich in lived wisdom, Remarkable Changes revolves around seven signposts of change -- stops we all visit, and perhaps revisit, on the turbulent voyage of life. Jane reflects on the life-altering events of her past and on their universal lessons. While candidly recounting her own defining moments of turmoil -- rejection, betrayal, divorce, near bankruptcy, and near-death experiences among them -- she introduces extraordinary men and women who have courageously navigated the most formidable changes, from the loss of a child to sudden blindness, as well as those who have made incredible changes happen against the odds.

Drawing on her own life and the shining examples of others -- including her indomitable mother, a native of Holland who was held in a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II; her husband, James Keach, who restored her faith in love and trust in men after a painful divorce; and her "soul mate," Christopher Reeve, who won her heart in the cult classic Somewhere in Time -- she offers a wealth of guidance for successfully managing any journey of transition.

Heartfelt and uplifting, Remarkable Changes is a welcome companion that will help us find the true value in our life's passages.

2 out of 5 stars Failed Marriages and a Life of Privilege to teach others.......2005-07-30

I was sorely disappointed. The title and book jacket verbage make this sound like an outstanding read but I found it a tale of failed marriages and I felt sorry for Seymour and her choices but I hardly find it a model to teach from. Somehow I missed the lessons of the reviewers but then she is from the Hollywood crowd and they sing each others praises. A nice lady I'm sure but I found it more about her than about the lessons.

5 out of 5 stars Touching account of a remarkable woman.......2004-02-27

I never thought much of Jane Seymour, other than to think
she was a pretty actress . . . her book, REMARKABLE
CHANGES, certainly gave me a different
            perspective.

It is a touching account of how she has embraced change, as
well as such life-altering events as rejection, betrayal, divorce,
            near bankruptcy, and near-death experiences . . . I liked how
she was quite candid about her life . . . in addition, she
movingly told many other stories about others who have had
to deal with such tragedies as the loss of a child and sudden
            blindness.

I especially liked a section toward the end, in which she described
a tradition her parents taught her:

As little girls we were always encouraged to count our blessings.
Of course what that implies is that no matter what happens, there
are always blessings among the day's events to be counted.
In my mind, that's what we do when we look for the gifts that change can
bring. The last thing I do every night-and have done all my life-is think
over what's happened that day, and what I think is going to happen, and
then to think of how grateful I am for the things that have happened. I've
taught my own children to do the same, and it's a lovely little ritual I often
complete with my twins. And I love feeling that I can pass to my children
the wonderful, enriching traditions my parents taught to me. Nice end to
            the day, actually.

There were several other memorable passages; among them:
All these difficulties have taught me something. As a result of
feeling left out and separate, and later of losing my passionate
dream of dancing, I began to see that although we don't always
have a choice in what happens to us, we really do have a choice
in how we react to what's happened. My reaction to being
excluded was that I retreated into working hard at what I did.
At the Arts Educational School, my parents couldn't afford the
education I was getting. I was on a partial grant, and I was so
incredibly grateful to be allowed to study what I loved rather than
cope with regular school that I did not want to waste one second of
my life and wanted to prove it to be the right choice. It's a feeling
that's carried over to my life today. How grateful I am to live in
            the moment.

When I was fighting my weight, years ago when I was in my twenties, I
used another trick. I realized that the more I thought about the situation,
the worse I got. The more I felt I had put myself on a diet, the more I
obsessed about food, or rather, about not having food. However, I found
that if I put knitting needles in my hands, or if I was embroidering, or
even now, if I'm painting, my hands are busy, and it doesn't occur to me
to put something in my mouth. When my mind is focused on being creative,
the time flies by, and suddenly I think, "Oh my goodness, I haven't eaten
            anything for three hours."

When she [her mother] returned home and the diagnosis was made,
she went right to work on a will. Contrary to what most of us would
think, Corinna said, "It was a wonderful, extraordinary exercise. Like
being Santa Claus!" I can believe that because I've watched my
mother do the same thing, with great joy. At eighty-eight years
of age, she lives every day to the fullest, taking advantage
of every opportunity and invitation that comes her way, but at the
same time she's aware that she won't be here forever. Consequently
she's been quite literally gathering up the gifts she has in her life
and then slowly handing out treasures she's collected and things
she knows we'll value. She's been doing this for the last few years-we've
received things like my first ballet shoes or a dance outfit I wore as a girl,
an exercise book from school, an award my father received. My mother
is such a giving person, she derives great pleasure in sharing these gifts,
while she's well, alive, and vibrant enough to take part in the excitement
            with us.

            5 out of 5 stars Remarkable Revelation.......2003-04-30

Live in the moment. You can't take anything with you when you go except the imprint you leave behind in the lives of others. If you are struggling with something in your life, go out and help someone else.

All of these are pieces of advice for turning life's challenges into opportunities, the subtitle of REMARKABLE CHANGES.

For years, Jane Seymour has always been viewed as having the "perfect life." She's had 30+ successful years in the film industry, is happily married, has 4 children and 2 stepchildren, and seems to spin gold with everything she touches, including a clothing line, a worldwide art career, a new housewares collection, a children's clothing line and several published books.

However, appearances can be deceiving. So it is with Seymour. As she shares in this memoir, the life behind the smiling woman you've seen on TV is far from perfect. Although some might classify this book as self-help, it is more appropriately categorized in the autobiography section. Seymour uniquely combines personal stories with advice for an entertaining result full of heartwarming honesty and down-to-earth anecdotes.

Complete with 20 stories from friends and family who have triumphed over their adversities, REMARKABLE CHANGES offers fresh insight into the realities of life, told in a way that makes you feel more like you're sitting down to tea with Jane than delving into a personal counseling session.

Mirroring the quilting circles of days gone by, Seymour stresses the importance of sharing your struggles with others to help you get past whatever is holding you down. No stranger to setbacks, she details the pain of her divorces, her frightening near-death experiences and the ups and downs of her acting career. Through it all, Seymour writes about attitude being what makes or breaks you as you deal with the changes in your life. You are the one who decides how you'll react to whatever life throws your way and whether you'll have stepping stones or stumbling blocks.

So, be prepared for a journey of discovery and enlightenment, coupled with the 'fireside chat' voice of Jane Seymour as you learn about your own REMARKABLE CHANGES.

4 out of 5 stars Where Has This Classic Gone?.......1997-12-25

When The Rolling Stone History of Rock and Roll's FIRST EDITION was published I bought two copies as gifts. Since that time, both people who were lucky enough to get copies of this classic have somehow managed to lose the books. And I have been trying to find a copy for myself for several years but no one seems to have it. The photographs in this FIRST EDITION are excellent and do give us the best glimpse back into the history of rock and roll that I've ever seen. And even though the biographical information is not exquisitely detailed, it does provide readers with a general overview of the Big Picture of Rock and Roll History, from soup to nuts, of how Rock and Roll all got started and its evolvution. The book peaks with the Woodstock Era, but takes us up to around the end of the 70's, around the days of Led Zeppelin and the birth of heavy metal. Here's what I find very annoying: When the Second Edition came out, much of the writing and photography was edited out - for reasons I can't begin to fathom. Personally, I wouldn't want the second edition on my book shelf. The publishers have ruined a good thing when all they had to do was create a Volume II edition, and they would have sold more copies of both editions - as companions. Rather than make a second volume as a companion to the first, they butchered this historical book and gave over to the Punksters that followed. Gone are the pictures of Jimmy Page, the Woodstock photo, and many more, in place of Johnny Rotten and other Punks that really turned what was a good thing, Rock and Roll, into an angry, painful noise that basically signalled an end to the good times and the poignancy of artists like Jethro Tull, or even Pink Floyd, and focused on negativity. This era (the 80's - 90's, would have been better left to a separate volume. But to destroy the First Edition, in my opinion, was butchery. You just don't do that. It's like changing the Mona Lisa because you think there should be fruit trees in the background. Or a modern skyscraper to show what came later. If you're lucky enough to have a copy of the original, keep it. It's a keepsake. And Rolling Stone, if you're listening ... what in the hell were you thinking when you trashed this great book? If anyone has a copy they'd like to sell, please let me know! Long Live Rock and The First Editions
