This is a really bad book. I thought that it would be something different when I got it and was not worth the money. I would not recomend this book to anyone.

1 out of 5 stars Review Prisoner of the Immortal.......2007-01-10

I hate this book. The art is sketchy and uninteresting, the story had potential but the author didn't put much work into it after creating an initial idea for a book. There is nothing daring, funny, or exciting in this 'book' at all. Even the usual angst of a yaoi book is totally flat and frankly pathetic. Run screaming from this title, it's as boring a read as I've come across in this category. Its bad enough to single handedly become a good argument for ALWAYS examining a book in a store for quality before committing ones-self to a purchase. The only saving grace is that it did arrive promptly.

1 out of 5 stars If you love real manga, do not attempt to read this.......2006-03-13

I thought this book was absolutely awful. No real dialogue to speak of except for very large ballons with one or two words in them. The story, and I use the term loosely, was confusing at best, and went nowhere. I'm very dissappointed in this purchase.

        2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-02-28

But my preference is for the written word rather than picture books.

This could make a great story, if written well.

        4 out of 5 stars Offered to a Demon.......2005-12-01

I'm only giving this book a 4 because of the 2 stories in the back. I really LOVED Offered to a Demon. It's the best yaoi story I've ever read and it's really hot! I absolutely hate the main story, but only because it lacks story and makes no sense. The more gorish story in the back is still a good read, regardless.

This book, to me, was worth the buy just for the demon story.

        Book Description

The frozen wilderness of the Far North has long tested the most extreme and reckless of adventurers. In Prisoners of the North, Pierre Berton depicts five extraordinary characters who were in thrall to the Artic’s forbidding landscapes: a mining tycoon; an explorer; a titled lady; a backwoods eccentric; and a best-selling poet. Their life stories give us a compelling portrait of the Arctic, long before it was tamed by the bush plane, the snowmobile, and the paved highway.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Portraits of Notable Northern Characters.......2005-12-22

Pierre Berton an accomplished and beloved Canadian author presents here five essays on different notable characters that stand tall in the history of Canadian arctic discovery, exploration, exploitation and settlement. The author is a master of arctic history, legend and lore. His most notable works include Klondike Fever and The Arctic Grail. This effort is interesting but falls a bit short of the mastery and command that the author presented in his earlier efforts. It is notable that this work was completed in 2004 which was the last year of the author's life. It is still a worthwhile book to read for those interested in arctic history and the hardy colorful characters that accomplished early settlement and exploration of the extreme north. It is recommended that if you read this during the winter months sit close to your fireplace or woodstove.

        5 out of 5 stars A badly needed tonic.......2004-01-07

As a collateral descendant of one of the Immortal 600, Captain Harris Kollock Harrison, I am pleased to see this shameful episode of American history documented. Mauriel Phillips Joslyn has performed a very scholarly investigation not only into the treatment of the Immortal 600 but also into the fanatical thinking that was responsible for Federal prisoner policies during the war. Given the increasingly plastic and shallow views of the war being fed by the mainstream media and academia to the public about the war, "Immortal Captives" is a badly needed tonic, and, moreover, a reminder that Lincoln's war to preserve the Union by force was no altruistic exercise in human rights.

5 out of 5 stars Americas Buchenwald or Concentration camps.......2003-06-16

If you want to buy just one book about American POW camps during the Civil War, this would be an excellent one.
Using primary sources, the Federal Official Records ( O.R), 60 pages of footnotes and bibliographies, the mountain of evidence is overwhelming.
Why did the Union force the Confederate POWs to slowly die from staravation, is found in this book.
Why did Lincoln allow the Union to use these 600 Confederate POW officers to be used as HUMAN SHIELDS is also answered.
No this book isn't fiction; it is part of Americas shameful past it tries to keep hidden.
The truth will always come to the surface.
Mauriel Joslyn has done an excellet job with this book.

4 out of 5 stars The diaries and letters are powerful and evocative........1998-09-28

Any book that casts Southerners in a favorable light and especially any book that criticizes the Yankee victors is immediately suspect. As a Southerner, even one whose great grandfather served under one of the Immortal 600, I must confess to having held this book suspect. The book is not great literature as Ms. Joscelyn's connective prose is oftimes laborious. That said, the quotes from the officers' diaries and letters are powerful and evocative. I consider myself a thorough student and hardened reader of War Between the States literature and must confess to having failed to supress a tear from time to time. It is inconceivable to the modern American that the United States would have willfully and maliciously treated fellow human beings the way these men were treated The book will never be a best seller, but should be a must read for the student of the formative event of modern America.

                      Book Description

Linda Ashcroft offers an intimate memoir of Jim Morrison at the height of his career. This vivid portrait is based on her diaries from the four-year period when she knew Morrison. "Wild Child," one of Morrison's most popular songs, was written for Ashcroft. Morrison's dreams and demons, and the meaning behind his lyrics and poems, are revealed through Ashcroft's evocative writing. Wild Child is a richly detailed and passionate account of what life was like with the legendary Doors singer. It is also the first book to illuminate the mystery of Morrison's death through the words of the woman who was with him when he died in Paris, Pamela Courson. Before flying to Paris, Morrison told the author: "It may have been in bits and pieces, but I gave you the best of me." In return, Linda Ashcroft gives us the best of Jim Morrison.

I haven't finished reading this yet but I love it! I can't put it down! It tells how Jim Morrison really was. I'm learning a lot about him.

3 out of 5 stars Something smells fishy here..........2006-07-21

As a work of fiction, this book is fabulous. Compelling, nice flow, keeps you interested. But its not true. I would've loved this as a regular old novel in the same way I would've loved Ms. Kennealy's book/cash cow Strange Days. But I cannot understand why she really thinks this stuff is true. Maybe she's brainfried or maybe shes trying to cash in on a chance meeting with a rock star. I dunno but it confuses me. Too many people have told this story and stuck their name in it! Get a life please and write some novels.
Three stars for the incredibly brilliant web of lies.
"Storytelling is just an elaborate form of lying." said someone whose name escapes me.

5 out of 5 stars Wild for Wild Child.......2006-03-24

I Loved this book! It honestly gave me an idea of what life would of been like with Jim Morrison. I couldnt put it down and finished it quickly. Its a book I'd read over & over just for its realness.

                      2 out of 5 stars Hmmmm..........2006-02-15

I've just finished reading "Wild Child" and am quite disappointed. It's not as well written as I'd anticipated from reading other reviews, and although I see myself as a romantic, her story was too saccharine even for my tastes.
I will withhold my personal thoughts as to the validity of her account, not having known any of the parties involved, but it would seem odd that a brilliant, chivalrous, needy, tortured alcoholic could be as one sided as he is portrayed in this book. I'm more likely to recommend Patricia Kennealy- Morrison's memoir to those interested in learning more about Jim Morrison. It was infinately more readable and leaves the reader with more insight into who Jim Morrison really was.

Concern is growing about the effectiveness of television advertising regulation in the light of technological developments in the media. The current rapid growth of TV platforms in terrestrial, sattelite, and cable formats will soon move into digital transmission. These all offer opportunities for greater commercialization through advertising on media that have not previously been exploited. In democratic societies, there is a tension between freedom of speech rights and the harm that might be done to children through commercial messages. This book explores all of these issues and looks to the future in considering how effective codes of practice and regulation will develop.

                            Book Description

"We all know the box was not the best invention for children. A recently released tome, The Impact of Television Advertising on Children reinforces our trepidations. Written by Shailaja Bajpai and Namita Unnikjrishnan and published by Sage, the researched work also alerts us to the hazards of consumerism that TV exposes innocent minds to." --Metropolis on Saturday "Questions the notion that children are mature enough to recognise the commercial intent of advertising. The book concludes that a child 'instinctively trusts the adult world¼ consequently television, which is peopled by grown ups, inspires them with the faith that whatever appears on TV is real and not be doubted'." --Times of India "Meticulously researched, yes. Cogently argued, perhaps¼. In many ways, this is a seminal book." --Business World "The Impact of Television Advertising on Children is a book that deserves to be read by all adults responsible in any way in shaping the life of children in their charge." --Times of India "An important point of view in the discussion about media responsibility. This research study is a welcome contribution to public discourse because it is calmly argued and eschews the fashionable tendency to bandy weather-beaten buzz words. The book will be valuable to anybody wanting to understand how television bends the mind, because although Unnikrishnan and Bajpai focus on children, the scope of the work includes and informed analysis of the medium itself." --Newstime "This is a timely book. Also a useful one. In fact, a given its capsule format and its passion for facts, statistics and tables, it is really more a book to be used by professionals of various kinds. Some kinds of data that they have chosen to elicit... would be of interest to advertisers.... Of interesting data there is plenty. In essence, this is a field study, the first to be put out by a major publisher on the specific topic of children and television advertising in India." --Biblio "A seminal study.... The most complete analysis yet of the child as consumer." --Business Today The manner in which ideas conveyed by television programs and advertising shape our children's consciousness is of growing concern in India and throughout the world today. Children, the most impressionable of any group, are continually targeted by the media, and despite the rapid proliferation of television in India, there is little informed research on its effects on India's "littlest consumers." Based on in-depth interviews with over 730 children between the ages of 5 and 15, The Impact of Television Advertising on Children highlights the impact that TV has on the values, attitudes, and aspirations of Indian children. The book provides an insight into the lives of children from different social strata, and their respective ways of handling, negotiating, and understanding information made available to them over television. In particular, the authors closely examine children's view on advertising and what it means to them in their lives. This lively book, the first of its kind pertaining to India, draws the reader into a healthy questioning of the role of television and advertising in society. Lucidly written, it will be of great interest to academics, researchers, and professionals in mass communication, media studies, sociology, and social psychology and to all those concerned with the impact that television advertising has on our lives.

How children are effected by the commercials? What kind of advertisements do children like? Which ages are more effected ? How parents react to their children's requirements? Do commercials create a standard consuming profile to children?

From the author: In December 1997, 250 children were asked to list their Christmas wishes. These requests were then compared to the commercials that were broadcast at the time of data collection. Sixty-seven percent of the seven-and eight-year-olds, 49% of the 9- and 10-year-olds, and 40% of the 11-and 12-year-olds asked for at least one advertised product. Children's gender and age, as well as their level of exposure to the network that aired the most commercials, were significant predictors of their requests for advertised products.
