I am a beginner and this book was not very good. Some of the basic info was okay, but the layouts are ugly. I did get one good idea -- the ABC album for a baby -- and there is one nice layout that I like, but the rest of the layouts are fussy with lots of stuff and just one or two photos.

Allyson has made scrapbooking easy for anyone with a book suited to any level of scrapbooker. She touches on almost every aspect of modern scrapbooking and preserving your memories. This book is loaded with over 200 pages of projects, techniques, and ideas, using creative illustrations and step-by-step instructions. The amount of information and ideas results in a valuable addition to any scrapbooker's library.
This book provides the beginning scrapbooker with a complete overview of the basics and beyond. Everything from paper and photos to paints and dye are insightfully covered in the first part of the book. Allyson points out so many great ideas in her tags and photographs on every page that they are certain to inspire the budding beginner to the seasoned scrapper. I personally appreciated the list of materials needed for starting and completing all the various layout examples. For the beginner, intermediate, and advanced scrapbooker, this is a book packed full of tips, tricks, ideas and instructions.
Albums are greatly touched upon in this book, which is what we all are creating with our layouts in some fashion. Whether you are the traditional or the themed scrapbooker it does not matter. Everything is covered in Allyson's book. From ABC albums to creating albums together with young children, Allyson walks you through a multitude of different types of albums you can create. Wonderfully illustrated sample layouts with instructions and materials lists will guide you through each step making the creation process easy, fun and educational.
Another great part of this book which I found helpful is the insightful reviews on cutting systems available to the consumer for purchase. As I do not currently own a cutting system, I could only imagine how many hours of research and perhaps a few wasted dollars it would take before finding the right one to suit my needs. Allyson has done the work for you. Listing pros, cons and informative reviews for each system she discusses. You are certain to find and understand the cutting system that can best meet your needs.
While I expected this book by its cover to be more oriented towards helping the beginning scrapbooker, I found that this was not the case. I was pleasantly surprised at how much content was packed into this book, making it perfect for any level scrapbooker. Allyson touches on almost every aspect of scrapbooking and preserving your memories with great introductions and topics for beginners to expanded ideas for the more advanced. Her book presents itself in a fun, well organized style with so many fresh ideas that is certain to inspire a trip to your favorite scrapbook store. I believe everyone will find something to enjoy or new ideas to explore in this great introduction to scrapbooking.

I purchased this book because I am a first time scrapbooker. The book was extremely helpful. There were lots of different album ideas & page designs to help me get started. It also gave me lots of ideas for the future. I definitely recommend this book.

A Good Original Resource - New Edition Available.......2007-05-04
It might be helpful for people to know that a new version of this title was published in late 2006 as The Complete Idiot's Guide to Scrapbook Projects Illustrated (Complete Idiot's Guide to). It has really great album projects and page ideas, plus step by step techniques. The book is in full color, which I enjoyed.
The book shown on this page - The Complete Idiot's Guide to Scrapbooking by Wendy Smedley - was one of the best first books published about the hobby, it was published in 2002. There are good black and white photos throughout.

this book was somewhat helpful, but as I am a true beginner, I had trouble following what the author was explaining at times.
Very Informative but Lacking Important Details.......2004-12-09
I am a total scrapbooking novice and purchased this book because I hoped it would bring together the questions I have about scrapbooking, namely, what I should be thinking of when I scrapbook, what materials are out there, what's right for me and what I should skip, what are good techniques to use in scrapbooking, and some good layout ideas.
The book is user-friendly, and has a lot of basic information, what terms refer to, what to look for in supplies, good website addresses, but two major questions of mine remained unanswered.
First, I'm trying to decide whether to invest in a digital camera and the author had almost nothing to say about this subject! Digital cameras would enable users to crop photos, lighten or darken images, fit images into oval borders etc. I wanted to hear the verdict on this stuff from a master scrapbooker, not a camera salesperson, but there was nothing about it in the book. It may be that the book is not up to date, which signals it's time for a new edition. This ommission sank the book for me right there.
My second unresolved question was also technical. I wanted to
learn more about how to incorporate computer-written text into my scrapbook. I wanted to hear about how to print on thicker paper, etc. How well these papers are expected to hold up over time. Most of what the author discussed on the issue of adding text involved how to do calligraphy, what pens to buy, or other manual methods of adding text. That's certainly not the only option, and I suspect many others prefer typing to writing by hand, (computers are easier than calligraphy these days) but again, there were only cursory mentions of printing text: one of the suggestions was, "it's great buying font software, here are some cool websites." That's simply not enough guidance, especially with all the products on the market these days.
Lastly, for the price of the book and considering this is a book on generating images I would have expected A LOT more color images of scrapbook pages. Most of the images were small and black and white. The captions next to them are almost mocking. They read things like "Notice the use of different textures on this page.." Really? How? The picture is tiny and it's in black and white!
I only now realize that the term "complete" in the title doesn't refer to the content, but to the idiot instead! And I was expecting a complete guide for idiots....!! I guess I was expecting too much.
A good basic buy, but don't expect your questions to be answered by a long shot.

If you are truly a beginner at scrapbooking then this is a really great book. I would've given it 5 stars but there are no color pages, and that was a little disappointing to me.
This book is packed with tons of info. Everything you need to know to get started and then some. When you first start scrapbooking it can be so intimidating with all the lingo and products. After you read this book you'll know exactly what you need and exactly what everyone else is talking about!

I bought this book prior to being admitted to the hospital for a surgery and 3 day stay. I am an avid scrapbooker but I love reading about ways to improve my pages. I was so bored with this book, and I am a true scrap-addict, I will read or buy practically anything scrapping related. I couldn't give this away in swaps and show my face again.
This book said nothing I didn't already know,(and I don't know all that much) and when they say the "idiot's guide" they really mean it. It was your basic "how to scrapbook" manual,but unless this is the only book you have and you know NOTHING AT ALL about the hobby the book is a waste of money-money that could be spent buying legitimate scrapping idea books.

I could definitely identify with some of the essays, but others bored me and I didn't finish them. The variety of emotions, situations, and life experiences were entertaining and did lead to some introspection. I wouldn't say this is a "must read," but it's an enjoyable book that was perfect to read in bits, as the 42 essays are short.

My book discussion group read Guilty Pleasures this month. It was the first non-fiction book we ever selected. The book is a lot of fun, but it has serious parts, too, so it made for a good discussion.
Reading Fudge.......2003-05-23
I love to read in the same way that some people love eating chocolates. Just as they disregard warnings as to caloric intake in making their selections and opt for the largest, darkest,or prettiest piece in the box, so, too, I disregard the admonition not to judge a book by its cover and often select a book by its size, heft, and cover. Guilty Pleasures meets all of my superficial criteria: it has a pleasing fit to the hand, a weight perfect for horizontally-inclined literati such as I, and an eye-catching cover filled with colorful shoes such that one's eye is drawn to the authorship on the suspicion (unfounded) that this is Immelda Marcos' work. Of course, as my chocoholic friends might say, "the proof is in the pudding" and the quality of a book is in the reading. Just as a square of fudge delights as it melts and clings to the palate, Guilty Pleasures delights the mind. Eight women writers unrepentantly share the joys they find in ordinary and not so ordinary pleasures running a quixotic gamut from taking antidepressants to applying toenail polish, from crossword fanaticism to extorting money from one's parents. The writing is refreshingly witty, wicked, and wise. Although these small gems of essays are assembled of necessity in an order, I recommend reading them haphazardly. After all, what chocolate lover would adhere to the map on the candy box, eating all the creams first before proceeding to the nuts? There are enough strictures in life! Just open the book and enjoy at random. And, yes, the next time you need to tote a small gift somewhere, you might forego the candy and bring along a copy of Guilty Pleasures. Think of it as a book lover's fudge!

These authors have tapped into a huge vein (keg?) of human experience. Each essay details a different furtive joy, and I could feel their pleasure even in the ones I couldn't identify with myself.
There are no morals given; no helpfull hints; just honest enjoyment of many things that may not fit our public personas or enhance our professional images. Before I even finished the book, I found myself mentally starting to examine my own guilty pleasures. It's so nice to know that I'm not alone in admitting that I do get a thrill out of a few somewhat dubious activities.
My daughter keeps dipping into this book, too. Obviously, it's appeal is multi-generational.

Studying Popular Music Culture introduces a range of different ways to understand popular music. By situating the study of pop within the broader field of media and cultural studies it explores its dynamic place in our culture. On the one hand contemporary music is a highly organised and commercially exploitative industry, on the other it is a rich source of meanings and provides an arena for creative expression and personal identity. This is the paradox that lies at the heart of the study of popular music. Tim Wall combines a readable survey of existing work with an exploration of contemporary thinking about the institutions and cultures central to the production, texts and consumption of popular music. The book challenges the reader to think through many of the accepted ideas about modern pop and its historical development. Particular emphasis is given to developing skills of research and analysis appropriate to the study of popular music. Using case studies, original research and analysis, and suggested activities, each chapter builds a framework of concepts and techniques that students can use in their own work. This book will be an essential aid to undergraduate students of media and cultural studies and A level media students undertaking specialist studies of popular music.

Hospital dramas like ER, Casualty, Chicago Hope, and Gideon's Crossing became extremely popular over the past decade. This book explores the stylistic, aesthetic, and thematic impact of this successful genre. It argues that new medical dramas offer a very different visual and affective landscape from their predecessors, often seeking to disturb rather than reassure their audiences. Such dramas are visually mobile, speedy, and explicit in their depiction of body trauma: injury and illness are showcased as part of the televisual style. The medical professional is now frequently depicted as a modern day existentialist, forced to confront insipid new management cultures, ethical labyrinths, and noxious patients that invade the white purity of the medical ward and emergency room. The book traces the historical development of new medical drama and explores the implications of, and anxieties within, their depiction of modern healthcare. Finally, the book argues that there are parallels between the cultural fascination with the body as either sick or perfected and the attractions of a genre that seems to revel in the juxtaposition of morbidity and glamor.
