    Book Description

Feminism is one of the most important perspectives from which visual culture has been theorized and historicized over the past thirty years. The Feminism and Visual Culture Reader brings together a wide array of writings addressing art, film, architecture, popular culture, new media, and other visual fields from a feminist perspective, combining classic texts by leading feminist thinkers with polemical new pieces. Challenging the notion of feminism as a unified discourse, the reader explores how issues of race, class, nationality, and sexuality enter into debates about feminism in the field of the visual and includes work by feminist critics, artists, and activists. The reader ncludes six previously unpublished texts written specifically for this volume.

Amelia Jones' introduction to the reader races historical and theoretical developments in feminism and visual culture. Articles are grouped into thematic sections, addressing Representation; Difference; Disciplines/Strategies; Mass Culture/Media Interventions; Body; and Technology. Each section opens with an introduction by the editor.

The Feminism and Visual Culture Reader provides a framework within which to understand the shifts in feminist thinking in visual studies as well as an overview of major feminist theories of the visual.

5 out of 5 stars The source book on Airbrushing.......2003-07-14

I own quite a number of books on airbrushing, some very good, some average. This book is without a doubt THE definitive book about ALL aspects on airbrushing. It is an outstanding book in every respect.
It covers more aspects of airbrushing than any other book I have seen, it is superbly produced in full colour and the clarity of text and photography is as good as it gets. Do I sound enthusiastic, you can bet on that. If there was one book that I was restricted to on this subject, I would not hesitate in recomending this book, it is just so good.
I would recomend this book as THE BEST BOOK ON AIRBRUSHING YOU CAN BUY!, you will not be disapointed.

                    Book Description

More crazy adventures and exciting new characters await in this final volume of Pretty Maniacs. Days before his professional debut, Suo injures his hand, and it's up to Shinano and Chihaya to save the day. Sara Verlinden, an otaku from America, shows up at Maniac Road to learn the Way of the Maniac. As the manga club gears up to produce a special volume of their fanzine, rumors spread about a romantic involvement between two members. Kanju, who for so long has lived in the shadow of his sister, displays his budding aptitude for writing manga. Also, the prodigal son returns!

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars SHINANO WOUNDS BUDDING MANGA-KA.......2006-05-16

While Shinano's manga club is getting a self-made fanzine/manga together and expanding its space in the clubhouse, one of its members, Suo, is doing something a little more serious. He is writing and drawing his own manga to be featured in a magazine in two days. But his dreams suffer a blow when he injures his drawing hand whilst rescuing Shinano from a fallen bookcase! It's up to her and friend Chihaya to be his assistants to get the job done before the deadline.

A new character arrives on the scene as Sara Verlinden, an American otaku who works for Shinano's brother is sent to Japan to get a true education in the world of anime and manga. Of course, he sends her to live with the girls at Maniac Road because he knows she will be steeped in the otaku culture while she's staying there.

It's sad to say it but this is the last volume of Pretty Maniacs...at least for the forseeable future. I'll miss its whimsy and charm. It's really easy to identify with the characters being a wanna-be otaku myself. All of them have an intense passion and committment to what they're doing, and you don't feel as though they'll ever grow out of this love for anime and manga. I would also recommend the prequel to this series, Maniac Road. Genshiken and Comic Party, available in both anime and manga versions are also the next logical stops after reading this.

Excellent book to have in your hand as you wander around NYC or LA, these people just seem to fall over you.It obviously includes some great actors and actresses who should be noted for more than giving sterling support but who deserve to be fully in the spotlight.

3 out of 5 stars Good Reference Guide.......2006-03-07

"Hey! It's That Guy!" is a neat little guide to character actors. It has thirteen chapters devoted to various types of roles (the courtroom, the hospital, the office, and the precinct, for example) and features pictures and descriptions of actors that are best known for playing those types of roles. There are also various very helpful icons used throughout the book such as award winner, straight to video, villain and deceased. Also included in the portrait of each actor is a timeline with his or her most famous roles listed.

For the most part, this is a very useful guide for looking up actors that look familiar. The descriptions of each actor are humorous but informative. There are several useful indexes in the back of the book and best of all a section with the pictures and names of all the actors featured in the book. Unfortunately, the book is on the small size; I would have preferred a larger book, with more roles listed for each actor. And some of the pictures are movie stills and not very clear, which is shame since the pictures should be the strong point of the book.

All in all, movie and trivia buffs will enjoy this reference book.

3 out of 5 stars Where's the rest of the info.......2006-02-24

This book was interesting in that you finally had a name with some familiar faces, but it was a little too irrevant. I wanted more info on the actors themselves not just some wisecracks that the authors thought were funny. I think the authors were a little too impressed with their own wit. I like having a name with a face, but the authors could have gone further with backgrounds on the actors even using one page bios.

An earlier version of American Musicians appeared in 1986. Now the author has added 17 essays to the collection, and the result is a highly personal encyclopedia of jazz history, written with Whitney Balliett's trademark lyricism. Few critics can describe a piece of music with this kind of delicacy and precision. And the comments that Balliett elicits from his subjects are themselves worth the price of admission. Here, for example, pianist John Lewis goes right to the heart of jazz improvisation, and gives us a hint of what lays behind it: "When I take a solo, I try not to look at my fingers. It distracts me from music-making . . . I think about other things, even other music. If you break through those mere rules, destroy them, that's good, and it can become quite a marvelous experience. It's not just sadness or joy, it's something beyond that, perhaps exhilaration, but that's rare."

                          Book Description

When Whitney Balliett's American Musicians first appeared in the fall of 1986, the acclaim it received was universal. Leonard Feather, writing in The Los Angeles Times, said "no other writer now living can write with comparable grace and equal enthusiasm about everyone from Jack Teagarden and Art Tatum to Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman." And Bruce Cook in The New Leader called the book "the quintessential Whitney Balliett, the cream of the cream, a collection that leaves no doubt about his strength." Now greatly expanded with sixteen new essays, American Musicians II remains a superb introduction to the giants of jazz, or as Balliett himself calls it, "a highly personal encyclopedia, a series of close accounts of how a beautiful music grew, flourished, and (possibly) began the long trek back to its native silences." Breathtaking in its scope, the book features Balliett's singular portraits of jazz greats who have shaped this uniquely American tradition from its earliest days to the present, from inimitable innovators like Joe "King" Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton, to swing-era mainstays Fats Waller and Lester Young, to avant-garde pioneers such as Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman. We are treated to profiles of Pee Wee Russell, Red Allen, Earl Hines, and Mary Lou Williams, written when they were at the height of their powers; reconstructions of the lives of Art Tatum, Coleman Hawkins, Jack Teagarden, Zoot Sims, and Dave Tough; quick but indelible glimpses into the daily (or nocturnal) lives of Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus; and vivid portrayals of such modern masters as Red Norvo, Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones, Art Farmer, Michael Moore, and Tommy Flanagan. This new edition adds essays on such major musicians as Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, George Shearing, and Paul Desmond. In the forty years that he has written for The New Yorker, Whitney Balliett has earned the reputation as America's foremost jazz critic. The late Philip Larkin described him as a "writer who brings jazz journalism to the verge of poetry." Alistair Cook wrote that he is, "without a rival in sight, the most literate and knowledgeable living writer on jazz." And Gene Lees called him "one of the most graceful essayists in the English language on any subject." Now, with the second edition of American Musicians in hand, music lovers can experience Balliett's peerless observations on the jazz scene, as he takes you into the hearts and minds of jazz's great practitioners.

1 out of 5 stars He Always Writes in Perfect Tune.......2007-03-22

I have been a musician and writer for over 50 years, and glory of glories, in Whitney Balliett's book, American Musicians II, he achieves perfect pitch in his prose when capturing the heart and soul of what music is, and the men and women who make it happen. His stories pulse with an energy that is seemingly boundless. Here is a man who has somehow gotten inside these legendary figures, some of whom I knew and many of whom I've heard in person. Balliett lets you listen through his own ears, giving you a guided tour not only of the notes on the page, and then as they take flight in the air, but also of the fascinating daily lives of these gifted individuals. I can't play like Art Tatum, but Balliett lets me sit beside him as he lays down his "perfect storm" of notes, at the end of which is this huge rainbow whose image we carry in our mind forever. If you love good music and good writing, you've come to the perfect book. Balliet is no longer with us, but he has left us a legacy that should be treasured for 32 bars unto infinity. 5 out of 5 stars Whitney Balliett's elegant solos........2001-02-15

If Whitnet Balliett were a musician, he'd probably be someone like Teddy Wilson, whose sometimes spare but dancing lines were always distinct, no matter the context. Balliett's musings on the more important jazz musicians, published originally in The New Yorker, are models of criticism that never betray his love and admiration for the music. It is unlikely that anyone will ever write as well as he has about America's most important contribution to the arts.

With the technology of the new millennium continuing to advance, there has been an increased interest in participatory forms of science fiction, fantasy, and horror entertainment such as role-playing and computer games, websites, and virtual reality settings. People seem to have a desire to go beyond the ordinary and well into the fantastic. This work is a compilation of new essays (all but one never before published) written by experts in both electronic and non-electronic game genres, covering computer games, web pages, Internet role-playing, interactive movies, table-top games, live-action role-playing, ghost hunts, action figures and amusement park rides. They cover a variety of viewpoints as to how and why people become so engrossed with virtual reality-type activities.

                            Book Description

Knowlton Nash’s detailed and widely praised history of the CBC, The Microphone Wars (1994), provided a superbly researched view of the trials and triumphs faced by Canada’s embattled public broadcaster since its birth sixty years ago. But for most Canadians, the CBC is not its backroom movers and shakers, nor even its boardroom masters. The CBC is its programs and its stars. And now Nash has written their book.

Based on interviews with more than 120 performers, producers, and behind-the-scenes players, Cue the Elephant is packed to the covers with revelations and surprising anecdotes that range from the serious to the plain ridiculous, from the hilarious to the very poignant.

Goofs, gossip, peeves, and rivalries sprinkle the pages as Nash relates hundreds of memorable incidents: Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau changing his baby’s diaper backstage at “Front Page Challenge”; the professional battles between Wayne and Shuster; Juliette’s struggle to keep cameramen from “shooting up her nose”; Tommy Hunter’s fights with producers; announcer Allan McFee’s creative use of a can of asparagus and his attempt to asphyxiate a producer; Barbara Frum’s devotion to her messy dog, Diva; Peter Mansbridge’s worry about going bald; and the long-mysterious expense account acronym PACR, which was finally discovered to stand for Pissed Away, Can’t Remember.

Whether you’re curious about the real reason for the cancellation of “Front Page Challenge,” “The Beachcombers,” and “Street Legal,” or want to know what Anne Murray, Gordon Pinsent, and Cynthia Dale are really like, Cue the Elephant provides an engrossing, funny, and nostalgic look at the stars of the CBC – from the radio days of Foster Hewitt, the Happy Gang, and Rawhide to the current hit television shows.

"Cue the Elephant" is a vivid, interesting account of the history of the CBC network in Canada. It is particularly interesting to read about how the "star" system there is almost non-existent. The real stars of the CBC are its journalists. This is must reading for anyone interested in Canada.

4 out of 5 stars A delightful insider's look at the history of Canadian TV........1998-05-19

Knowlton Nash, the closest thing Canada has had to a Walter Cronkite, was in fact a network bureaucrat before becoming anchor of the national news. As such, he was privy to every aspect of the CBC's television history, from the first broadcast in September 1952. CUE THE ELEPHANT is delightful nostalgia for any Canadian with memories of Juliette, THIS HOUR HAS SEVEN DAYS, Hockey Night in Canada, Don Messer's Jubilee, and other essential elements of Canada's recent cultural history.
