Book Description
For the past twenty-five years an extraordinary art movement has been underway in the remote countryside of northern Mexico, a renaissance of ceramic art in the tiny village of Mata Ortiz. As unlikely as it may seem, this phenomenon was sparked by the genius of a village woodcutter of rare artistic talent and equally rare determination, Juan Quezada.
Over the years, by trial and error, Juan Quezada gradually recreated the technology of the ancient pre-Columbian masterpieces, until modern masterpieces also emerged from his own hands. Now this reawakening of the ancient art is taking many forms in the hands of some three hundred villagers.
Noted Arizona author Susan Lowell has written a fascinating traveler's introduction to the region, the town, Juan Quezada, and many other village artists. Lowell's essay is followed by a biographical survey of a cross-section of 100 potters along with color photographs of their work and portraits of the potters. Included is a guide for travelers planning to visit the village, an index of Mata Ortiz potters, a schedule of exhibitions in the U. S. and Mexico of Mata Ortiz pottery featured in this book, a glossary, and a bibliography.

Treasure on Treasures.......2007-01-10
"The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz" is a treasure trove of information about the treasures that are the Mata Ortiz people and pottery. It is well laid-out, well written, and well...wonderful!! The only thing that would make my copy better are autographs by Juan Quezada himself and every other potter in the book.
Unfortunately for whatever reason, Juan's son Alvaro is not featured in the book. He is indeed an exceptional artist.
I was able to meet Alvaro and Juan Quezada in Nov 2006 in their family gallery in Mata Ortiz and found them and their entire family to be humble friendly and genuinely thrilled that people love their wonderful creations.
If you have not had the opportunity to visit Mata Ortiz, "The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz" will inspire you to go. If you have, it will make you pine for it and it's people.
Want to know more about Mata Ortiz and its potters?.......2005-09-24
This is a great book for all that are curious about Mata Ortiz pottery and the people who make it. If you want to start collecting, it's a great book to have for a reference source. All artists mentioned in this book are of high caliber, as good, some even better than the Native American potters of the Southwest. At this time, these wares are also less expensive and affordable to most people. Hopefully they will be a good investment for the future.

Mata Ortiz Pottery.......2005-07-19
A wonderful collection of photographs combined with dialoge about this remote village in Mexico. It describes the journey to get there, then details the lives of the talented people who live there. The photogtaphy is outstanding. A must for any person collecting or thinking of collecting pottery from this village.
The Next Best Thing To Owning A Pot.......2003-07-18
Almost 40 years ago Juan Quesada from the village of Mata Ortiz in Chihuahua singlehandedly revived Casa Grande style pottery. This book is a beautifully illustrated account of his success, along with the other artists of the village who learned from him. Becoming familiar with these artists should lay to rest the notion held by many Americans that Mexican imports are second class. These paper-thin pots are as beautiful as any you will ever see. This book has color photographs of many of the potters from Mata Ortiz as well as pictures of their pots. There is information on how the pots are made-- they are all built by hand from native materials, painted with brushes made from the artists' children's hair and fired over cow dung.
The book has a lot of interesting details-- for instance, when the Pope visited Mexico a few years ago, he was given three of these magnificent pots. Another fascinating tidbit is that one of every seven citizens of this village makes these pots. They have gone from doing manual labor to creating works of art.
Owning this book is the next best thing to owning a Mata Ortiz pot.
The Many Faces Of Mata Ortiz.......2000-09-08
This is the best pottery book I have ever found! It is layed out in an informative, and beautiful manner. Not only is the pottery exquisite, but the photographs represent the pieces at their best. It is easy to understand, and gets one passionate about an art movement, that we can actually be a part of, in this twenty-first century. It is highly unsual to be living during a time when a new art movement is going on, and still striving for it's pinnacle. We see this with the unequalled workmanship of the Matiz Ortiz people in their Casas Grandes/Matiz Ortiz pottery. I really enjoyed getting to know each potter by name and photo, coupled with seeing their work, and feeling a part of their extended family. Juan Quesada, the founder of this artistic movement, is a highly spiritual individual, generous and gifted beyond belief. He is the reason that this wonderful pottery is being shown to the world. I am an artist that does pottery, and a retired teacher. I would recommend this book to all art teachers, and anyone who appreciates great art.

Book Description
In Measure for Measure, Thomas Levenson offers a compelling account of how scientific thinking development from the day 2,500 years ago when Pythagoras discovered the musical scale to the present day. The story unfolds through the tales of instruments scientific and musical: the organ, the microscope, the still, the scales, Stradivari's miraculous violins and cellos, computers, and synthesizers. What emerges is a unique portrait of science itself as an instrument, our single most powerful way of understanding the world. Yet perhaps the most important invention of modern science has been the power to countenance its own limitations, to find the point beyond which science can explain no more, to rediscover that science, like music, is an art.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended for those interested in music and science.......1998-07-24
This is a must-read for anyone interested in music and/or science and the history thereof. It is not an exhaustive history, nor is it intended to be. Rather, specific examples are carefully selected as illustration of parallel historical trends in both disciplines. The book is carefully researched and thought-out. Levenson has a lovely lyrical style of writing, richly expressive, complemented by well-chosen illustrations. I came away from the book with a new understanding and appreciation of the evolution of these two surprisingly similar arts, music and science, and what they have to teach us. Very highly recommended!

Book Description
Dartmouth College boasts one of the largest collections of old scientific instruments in North America; they range from precision machines that represented the most advanced technology of their day to homemade devices produced by faculty and students. This book examines approximately 150 items from this remarkable collection to offer insights into the teaching of science and the conduct of scientific reesearch at a leading educational institution.
Though the instruments are beautifully photographed and presented, the authors do not treat them as isolated objects; rather, they stress the historical and social circumstances of the instruments' creation and use. The instruments are grouped by function, emphasizing their roles in the scientific enterprise, and they are often presented with supporting documentation, such as bills of sale, that shed light on how they were produced and consumed. The phographs often focus on details of their operation and parts, giving a dynamic rather than static sense of the objects.
A substantial introductory essay places the collection in context while the descriptions of the instruments stress their design, function, and use. This beautiful book showcases an extraordinary collection and situates the objects in terms of the prevailing scientific and educational practices of their day.

Book Description
A powerfully moving new novel from Mick Foley, filled with the same heart and imagination that made Tietam Brown so distinctive (“It makes you laugh so hard sometimes it makes you cry” —Chicago Tribune).
The time is 1969. Scooter Riley is a regular kid growing up in the Bronx, on Shakespeare Avenue, just north of Yankee Stadium. His father, Patrick Riley, is a New York City cop; his beat is Harlem, streets that are getting rougher by the day in the wake of the assassinations of Dr. King and Bobby Kennedy. Riley’s Spartan code of ethics and unwavering sense of duty to his neighborhood and the Force will carry him through; neither homicide nor drugs are going to get in his way, even if his wife does want them to get the hell out of the Bronx and for him to take a “safe” job somewhere in the suburbs. He’s happy with things as they are and wants to make time stand still, going to Yankee games in the neighborhood as he did growing up (as a boy he’d waited for hours to meet Joe D.—the great Yankee Clipper—and collected two decades of Yankee autographs of Yogi, Larson, Lopat, Mantle, too; on yearbooks, scorecards, ticket stubs, Spaldeens). Riley wants his son, Scooter—named after Yankee shortstop Phil Rizzuto, MVP, 1950—to have a childhood just like his own.
Scooter doesn’t get the same thrill his father gets from going to Yankee Stadium and watching the players “punch it through the hole,” or “spray it all around.” He loves his father but yearns for his own style—in baseball and in life.
His grandfather, a fireman for thirty years and horribly scarred, harbors a dark secret that has caused a deep rift between him and Scooter’s dad. Scooter’s grandfather sees the game of baseball as the game of life itself—to him all of life’s great lessons are explained in baseball lore, and he teaches Scooter to play the game in a way that’s different from how his father wants him to play. He teaches Scooter as well that life can be defined in a few extraordinary moments—moments of courage, of cowardice—when the ability to act, or not, defines who you are, and who you will become.
Into this world, a world that becomes increasingly less kind to Scooter, the defining moments his grandfather has warned him about come at a rapid pace, and as the years pass and Scooter grows up, it is through baseball, and its timeless rhythms, that the defining moments in Scooter’s life are played out—and that the boy he is now, and the young man he will become, are shaped.
Customer Reviews:
Mick Foley Is My New Favorite Writer!.......2007-07-15
To date I have read all of Mick Foley's books. I have enjoyed each of them. They cover a wide range from children's books and novels, to memoirs. Each book, and this one is no exception, are easy to read and you easily begin to genuinely care for the characters. There is a smooth, almost conversational, tone to the books. Thanks Mick!
wow.........................2006-02-20
I got this book mainly because Mick Foley wrote it and I have a great deal of respect for him due to his wrestling career. At the point I got the book I didn't read alot, and when I did I almost never finished the book. I picked up Scooter and everything changed!
It conatins the story of a kid growing up in the South Bronx at the point right before and during its downfall. It told me alot about New York City and some interesting Yankees information. This book really makes you root for the hero and at times it makes you want to jump into that story and help Scooter out!
It is very real as well. It deals with how life really is, at first it seems like the story shouldn't be done and after a whiel you realize that life is really like how it is in the book (you really need to know the end to understand what I mean).
This is a very good read and also very addicting. I suggest you take a day of two off of work to read it so you can truly focus on it. Scooter is well worth the 20 bucks to buy it, and if you can't afford it, get it from the library!
Not quite great, but pretty close.......2006-01-29
Having read (and loved) Foley's 'Tietam Brown', I had no idea what to expect, but I couldn't wait to read this book. Foley accomplished a lot with 'Scooter', maybe even too much.
Like 'Tietam Brown', 'Scooter' is the story of a boy and his family. However, this isn't a 'Happy Days' family. This family has a load of problems and unfortunately, poor Scooter bears the brunt of the load. Wherever Scooter turns in his family, he finds problems and pain.
Still Scooter grows up and we follow him through more pain. He does have his share of successes along the way, but the torment seems to be there all of the time.
It is a gripping story, but somehow I was a bit disappointed. Maybe I expected too much or maybe Foley attempted too much. After a while, some of the events in Scooter's life seem to make this tale too unrealistic, even as fiction. Scooter is the type of character which can easily be revisited in another book, which is maybe where some of the parts of 'Scooter' should have been placed.
If you can suspend your belief just a bit, you will totally enjoy this book.
Warm, Heavy on the baseball........2005-10-19
This book is a warm, relatively light read, but heavily references baseball throughout. If you aren't into baseball, which some find the most boring sport on earth, this tends to get in the way of the rest of the story.
Foley tells a great story.......2005-09-21
Mick Foley may not be Frost or Hemmingway or King or Patterson...but Scooter tells a great story.
Again, Foley may not show up on any College Literature Course's required reading, but he has a knack for bring sincerity and believe-ability to a story when telling it from the point of view of a confused and angry teenager.
He also offers many plot twists and revelations; most- I would bet - would be considered unpredictable by even the best-read fiction collectors.
I wasn't pleased-to-death with the ending, but it hardly killed the story. The book had to end 'somewhere', and Foley did a fabulous job of wrapping things up and putting them away.
If you like baseball, and can appreciate a story told from a teenager's point of view, you will very much enjoy 'Scooter'.

Book Description
From the post-punk, massed Mod revival of the 1970s, there emerged an almost organic cultural collective --- Scooter Boys. With an underlying musical focus on Northern Soul and R&B, these scooter boys developed a passion for steamy all-nighters, fueled by a fast, absorbing and intrinsically nomadic lifestyle. They gathered in their thousands at an array of coastal resorts all over the British Isles (and beyond) for all weekend parties, making their own rules and their own enemies. The cultural icon at the epicenter of this phenomenon were the Italian motor-scooters which mobilized this unique way of life. In the 1990s, yet another string was added to the bow of scooter culture, courtesy of artists such as Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene and Cast. These bands, along with the already scooter-credible Paul Weller, helped fuel a new generation of scooter-loving individuals.

I've read alot of Glyn Parry's books but 'Scooter Boy' has definetly been the best so far. It explores a girls emotions and life in a small town. Everything changes for her when the 'Scooter Boy' comes into her life. This has everything that you'd want in a book. A true insperation!

Sensing the City through Television: Urban Identities in Fictional Drama
Peter Billingham
Manufacturer: Intellect L & D E F a E
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: 1841500186 |
Book Description
An investigation of the fictional representations of the city in contemporary British and American television drama, assessing their political, sociological and cultural implications. The book draws on the following five key case studies for specific and detailed analysis:
* Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City
* Homicide & Life on the Street
* Queer as Folk
* The Cops
* Holding On
Each is discussed in terms of structure, content, characterisation and narrative, and each is placed within its specific ideological context. The case studies are intended to represent an interesting range of British and American cities and city sub-cultures. The author extends his analysis to investigate the intrinsic issues related to the implications of popular and high drama and culture.
This study includes exclusive interviews with the writers and directors of some of the series discussed. This new material provides new insights into the intended presentations of "city" identities for the television. As one of the first substantial investigations of the city in television drama, this book reflects and contributes to a growing general interest in the politics of representation. It is also designed for accommodation into the very popular academic courses on drama and in film and media studies: as a textbook and for supplementary reading.
