Book Description
Vladimir Nabokov saw rich colors in letters and sounds and noted the deficiency of color in literature, praising Gogol as the first Russian writer to truly appreciate yellow and violet. He saw q as browner than k, and s as not the light blue of c, but a curious mixture of azure and mother-of-pearl. For anyone who has ever wondered how the colors Nabokov heard might manifest themselves visually, Alphabet in Color is a remarkable journey of discovery. Jean Holabird's interpretation of the colored alphabets of one of the twentieth century's literary greats is a revelation. The book masterfully brings to life the charming and vibrant synesthetic colored letters that until now existed only in Nabokov's mind. In Alphabet in Color Jean Holabird's grasp of form and space blends perfectly with Nabokov's idea that a subtle interaction exists between sound and shape. In his playful foreword, Brian Boyd, "the prince of Nabokovians", points out that an important part of "Nabokov's passion for precision was his passion for color."

This commercially produced and priced book has the appearance of a private press book.
recommended not only for Nabokov admirers
No student of Nabokov's literary work should pass up the opportunity to peruse this unique and original study .......2006-01-12
Renowned twentieth-century literary author Vladimir Nabokov maintained that he could "hear" color. Enhanced with the memorable and interpretative illustrations of Jean Holabird, Alphabet In Color showcases what Nabokov heard with respect to colors would manifest visually to the rest of us with charming, vibrant, synesthetic colored letters. No student of Nabokov's literary work (which included "Lolita", "The Gift", "Pale Fire", "The Defense", "Invitation to a Beheading", Pnin", "Ada", and so much more) should pass up the opportunity to peruse this unique and original study of Nabokov's appreciation of color and its role in western literature.

Excellent for Animation students.......2007-08-08
I've collected many anatomy books, but what makes this one unique is that it shows both the simple (shapes) and finished drawing in several camera viewpoints, and illustrates muscle changes (like when raising an arm), again both in simple (rough animation) and finished work. This is perfect for animation so we can study how the body shifts in a clean illustrative format. I particulary like how they illustrate the diffrences in gender proportionately. Made my life much simpler. Once you know how to draw the anatomy correctly yet cleanly, it's easier to adapt it to more complex or more cartoony forms. A must have!
not really manga .......2007-07-22
the artsyle on the cover is Extremely Missleading~!
It Will only show how to draw "realistic" style manga anatomy. The women model is also rather man-ish looking.
So its not what i expected at all and i'm kind of Dissapointed. There is also a very Weird p2 page spread of up-crotch shots that i can only imagine are there for H-manga refrences.
How to draw manga.......2007-05-30
The entire experience was amazing. Shipped earlier then expected, in pristine condition, no hassles no worry.
The product itself is great. The guide truly helps with the basic structure of drawing characters anatonomically correct. It's always better to learn how to draw something right first and then learn how to break the rules later.
what are we, children?.......2007-05-17
This is a decent book that shows how to draw the human form. Not necessarily from a cartoony, *manga* perspective but the way the body actually looks. If you don't see how that could improve your skills as an artist, well...
The main reason I wanted to post this review was to comment on the juvenile attitude of many of the other reviewers. This is an anatomy reference. That means pictures of the human form in different positions without clothes. I wonder how serious these artists are not to know that. It may shock them to know that life drawing classes often hire nude models to sit around in the middle of class just so the students can get a better understanding of the human form. This is NOT PORNOGRAPHY and is no different that the photo anatomy references you can find in the art section of any major bookstore. The breasts are shown but who cares? the genitalia is not shown, just a bare patch. For some reason they drew shorts on the guys but not on the girls, but naughty parts are not visible on either so really who cares? This kind of panicky, knee-jerk conservatism makes me ill.
Sorry for the rant but really, this is an totally decent book that has been much maligned for no good reason.
Why do they always revert to sexual positions :(.......2007-05-13
Once again anything female related is mostly used in a sexual position and after being highly dissapointed with the "How To Draw Manga Volume 20: Female Characters" I really think the author has lost track, either that or he has a low outlook on females in general... Sadly dissapointing once again.

MOJUMBO-Gorgeo --AND big name texties!.......2007-01-18
I'm surprised no one has reviewed this HUGE NYC photo coffee table cover by Wolf. If you've ever been in NYC, you'll smell the air and feel the collective energy every time you open this glam monsterpiece!
It features 30 borderless, full-page pix of New York City's iconic buildings/tops/details old and new -- plus *everybody* comments: Albee, Capote, Sartre, James, Johnson, Wolfe -- even an interview (!!) with Warhol. What a bizarro dream team to textify this testament to NYC's "immortality".
The latter in spite of a few prominent pix (and withering architectural commentary -- hurrah!) of the late, symbolically lamented World Trade Center -- best shown as undifferentiated background for something precious.
How can anyone ship this mutha out at all, let alone properly protected, for $3.49??? Try and make sure yours isn't bent/dented at outset or during shipping, then tip the seller on safe receipt (maybe suggest this arrangement to him/her beforehand?!?)....

Witness Stephen King's triumphant, blood-spattered return to the genre that made him famous. Cell, the king of horror's homage to zombie films (the book is dedicated in part to George A. Romero) is his goriest, most horrific novel in years, not to mention the most intensely paced. Casting aside his love of elaborate character and town histories and penchant for delayed gratification, King yanks readers off their feet within the first few pages; dragging them into the fray and offering no chance catch their breath until the very last page.
In Cell King taps into readers fears of technological warfare and terrorism. Mobile phones deliver the apocalypse to millions of unsuspecting humans by wiping their brains of any humanity, leaving only aggressive and destructive impulses behind. Those without cell phones, like illustrator Clayton Riddell and his small band of "normies," must fight for survival, and their journey to find Clayton's estranged wife and young son rockets the book toward resolution.
Fans that have followed King from the beginning will recognize and appreciate Cell as a departure--King's writing has not been so pure of heart and free of hang-ups in years (wrapping up his phenomenal Dark Tower series and receiving a medal from the National Book Foundation doesn't hurt either). "Retirement" clearly suits King, and lucky for us, having nothing left to prove frees him up to write frenzied, juiced-up horror-thrillers like Cell. Stay tuned for more from the hardest-working retiree in the business with Lisey's Story, coming in October 2006. --Daphne Durham

Hail to the King
Fans applauded and critics howled when Stephen King was awarded the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Service to American Letters. In typical fashion, King accepted the honor with humility and urged recognition for other "popular" authors. Listen to a clip of his acceptance speech, then order the entire speech on audio CD.

Book Description
With timeless single "There She Goes," Lee Mavers' La's overtook The Stone Roses as great British guitar hopes and paved the way for the Britpop renaissance of Blur and Oasis. However, since 1991, The La's have been silent, while rumors of studio-perfectionism, madness and drug addiction have abounded with Mavers lined up as another rock casualty. The author sets out to discover the truth behind Mavers' lost decade and eventually gains a revelatory audience with Mavers himself.
Customer Reviews:
The Search Is Over.......2005-08-29
He found 'em and it is a pleasure. I've been a huge fan of the La's since I first heard their one and only album. Macefield's timing seems to be almost right as they did start performing again this year to excellent reviews and warm receptions. Macefield did his homework like a dilligent fact finder. He got almost everyone to talk to him including, almost unbelieveably, Lee Mavers himself. The Man. Mr. Macefield did extremely well with the people he interviewed. His sheer enthusiasm for the music is what carries this book. Hell, it's what has carried the La's legend this long as well. Would anyone even care about the numerous (and mostly now debunked) rumours about Mavers if the La's music wasn't so incredible? Hats off to Mr. Macefield for pursuing something as personal as this is as well. Given the specific nature of the target audience, he isn't going to sell THAT many copies, yet he persued it as if he were in touch with all of the Beatles past and present. He did it for the right reasons, and it shines though in his writing. You feel his frustration as he hits dead ends and his enthusiasm when doors are suddenly and unexpectedly opened. I'm listening to The La's as I write this review. Cheers!
A great story - a great band.......2004-08-09
At last someone has told the story of The La's. I was around in Liverpool at the end of the eighties and saw them play many times. The excitement and 'buzz' that they created was amazing -I'd never really seen anything like it before and I don't think I've seen it since !! The book is a little rough at the edges and does'nt go far enough in expressing the real reason why this band disintegrated - a cautionary tale. However, it does a great job of describing the characters in the band and of discussing the content of the music as well as describing the rise and fall. A must read for any music fan young or old.
