In a world packed with visual clutter, white space rules. From the classic Doyle Dane Burnbach ad that marooned a tiny Beetle in a huge expanse of blank paper to the all-white cover of the January 1995 issue of Wired magazine, white is an unparalleled attention grabber. Graphic designers prize white space for its connotation of elegance, for the clarity it lends to the printed word, and for the dramatic way it sets off photographs.

For White Graphics, Gail Deibler Finke assembled work by 61 graphic design studios in the U.S. (several of them in cities remote from the trendy coasts), Canada, Mexico, and Europe. While exemplary uses of white space (in projects ranging from annual reports to wedding announcements) make up the largest part of the book, she also devotes sections to white employed as a second or third "color" and the use of white in three-dimensional projects (packaging, airplane graphics, a TV studio set).

A few projects are conceptual standouts, like R&M Associati Grafici's poster for the France '98 World Soccer Championship, in which a field of colored dots (representing spectators in the stadium) forms the outline of the white silhouette of a soccer player. But most of the work shown on these pages is firmly in the mainstream--clean, bright, contemporary solutions that appear to satisfy the clients' needs and make the most of what are often described as small budgets.

Finke's nuts-and-bolts approach will be familiar to readers of HOW, the graphic design magazine to which she is a contributor. Too bad she didn't provide a more focused and historically minded introduction to such a fascinating topic. Happily, Stolze Design's inviting layout for the book sets off each project with plenty of white paper. --Cathy Curtis

Book Description

White is a constant challenge for graphic designers. Creating a balance between clean, striking, and eye-catching can often pose a conflict between clients and designer: a conflict that is often solved by a good designer's ability to effectively use white, white space and negative space for dynamic effect.

White Graphics is a unique collection of current design work which will inspire designers and clients who are afraid of white, as being lackluster or boring, through its stunning presentation of innovative graphics which use white as a central design element.

3 out of 5 stars White Gaphics Book.......2005-07-24

well, i think it's just an ok book for me, because there is not so much to see inside

5 out of 5 stars breathing room for your work.......2004-11-14

This is my current favorite resource for page layout, and I've been taking visual notes from it about how I want to lay out my portfolio. So much of what I did in studio was trying to cram as much information as possible onto presentation boards. I find this book refreshing, with much white space for some breathing room. I think that's important when somebody's sitting, pausing to hold your work in their hands, rather than standing and trying to ingest it quickly in a field of other boards trying to vie for attention.

Mairi follows the path of a 19th century artist who traveled through the highlands, sketching as he went. The book provides a very interesting comparison of the two century's perpectives on the highlands as well as enjoyable watercolor paintings of the highlands

5 out of 5 stars Editorial cartoonists celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall.......2003-03-14

I really like editorial cartoons, whether they are current ones on the editorial pages of a newspaper or old ones in history books. But for the most part we are talking about satirical barbs at the high and mighty. Still, there are times when editorial cartoonists get to actually celebrate something and the breath-taking collapse of the Berlin Wall and of communist governments in Eastern Europe provided that creative opportunity: e.g., the cover shot by Clyde Wells of the "Augusta Chronicle" showing two figures armed with the hammer and sickle of the Soviet Union to tear down the Berlin Wall. Add to this the demands for basic freedoms in both China and the Soviet Union and 1989 became on of the most memorable non-election years of modern times.

"Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year: 1990 Edition" has the work of 163 different cartoonists from the United States and Canada. In addition to the quickening disintegration of the Soviet bloc, there was the first year in office for the "kindler and gentler" Bush Administration, the showdown was Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega, and Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini putting author Salman Rushdie under a sentence of death for his book "The Satanic Verses." For scandals there was the Savings & Loan in Congress, the trial of Oliver North in the Iran-Contra scandal, the rejection of the nomination of former Texas Senator John Tower for secretary and defense, and the conviction of Leona Helmsley on tax evasion. Mother Nature added Hurricane Hugo qne an earthquake in the San Francisco Bay area during the World Series, while humans added insult to injury with the "Exxon Valdez" oil spill. There is a section we would find quite timely today dealing with Pete Rose being banned by baseball for betting on sports. Some things remain constant: there are always editorial cartoons about the economy and problems in the Middle East. It is amazing to me how vividly these editorial cartoons bring back these various issues. Give me a choice between an editorial cartoon and a photograph to preserve a moment in history, and I will usually take the latter.

        Book Description

Events of 1988 once again provided a bonanza for editorial cartoonists everywhere. The presidential campaigns led the news, while the Persian Gulf war, continued unrest in Israel, Mikhail Gorbachev's campaign for reform in the Soviet Union, the Geneva summit meeting, and the growing threat of AIDS also provided inspiration for the 329 cartoons in this volume.

For seventeen years the Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year series has been an important and entertaining review of the year's events. In this edition, more than 160 cartoonists express a variety of incisive views on a broad range of topics. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant, the cartoons in this volume provide a pictorial history of 1988.

When tripping down memory lane by flipping through the pages of "Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year, 1988," or any of its companion volumes in this series, what stands out the most are not the constant topics such as Congress getting nothing done, violence in the Middle East, concerns about the economy and defense spending, but the topics that are specific to 1987. That was the year of the doomed nomination of Robert Bork to the U.S. Supreme Court and a players strike in the NFL, a great opportunity for editorial cartoonists to declare a plague on both houses. Then there was the PTL scandal that brought down Jim Bakker and his wife Tammy Faye Bakker, a woman born to end up in editorial cartoons. Often, I find some of my favorite cartoons have to do with well-known personalities who died during the year: Jim Borgman has Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling in the reception room in heaven and Bob Englehart drew the set from "The Honeymooners" with the figure of Alice weeping over the death of Jackie Gleason.

1987 was a good year for award-winning cartoonists, with Mike Peters picking up the National Headliners Club Award for his Iran-Contra action figures, Berke Breathed shaking the earth by winning the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for "Bloom County," and Dick Locher earning the Fischetti Award for a cartoon of Reagan as Karnak ("The answer is: 'I Don't Know!' Now, what's the question?"). The Iran-Contra hearings provided lots of fodder for satire, with Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North suddenly becoming a national figure, along with National Security Advisor John Poindexter. Meanwhile, Ronald Reagan continued along with his "Teflon Presidency" while over on the Democratic side potential candidates Gary Hart and Joe Biden saw their campaigns self-destruct. You look over all the stupid things politicians were doing and no wonder the American public is jaded about scandals involving politicians. Then there was the controversy over promoting condoms as a way of reducing the spread of AIDS, just one of a dozen topics that cuts both ways in inflaming the passions of the American public. Still, all thing considered 1987 was a very good year for the pens dipped in venom by the nation's editorial cartoonists.

            Book Description

There’s more to the arms, artillery, and exotic equipment of the Star Wars galaxy than Jedi lightsabers and blasters. Species such as the tree-dwelling Wookiees, the amphibious Gungans, and the deadly Yuuzhan Vong have yielded a staggering array of unique weapons and devices. And as the Star Wars mythos continues to grow–in prequels and video games, on screen, in print, and beyond–these remarkable technical creations also multiply and evolve.

The New Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology is the fully updated and greatly expanded reference resource that organizes and explains every key class, make, and model of Star Wars munitions–from the smallest personal sidearms to the most devastating interplanetary superweapons–along with a host of other high-tech paraphernalia. This exhaustive compendium includes:

            • New in this edition: a fascinating look at the historical significance of Star Wars weaponry and the major technological turning points– including the Clone Wars, the creation of the first Death Star,
            and the Yuuzhan Vong invasion
            • A roster of the major manufacturers who created the most powerful armaments for the Old and New Republics, the Empire, the Sith, the Rebel Alliance, and all of the exotic governments that populate the Star Wars galaxy
            • In-depth descriptions of more than 100 weapons and more than 100 additional devices used for defense, communication, survival, security, and more–including detailed schematics of key technology featured in all five films

From the Geonosian sonic blaster to the Wookiee bowcaster; from the imperial energy grenade to the Yuuzhan Vong fire spitter; from dart shooters and laser cannons to Sun Crushers and World Devastators, find the facts about Star Wars firepower–and much more–in The New Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology.

3 out of 5 stars Star Wars for Children?.......2007-09-10

This book is good. There are plenty of pictures, sourcing for items and where the surface in the universe, even a fairly decent description of most of them. But it didn't have the technical specifications that you would expect from a Star Wars Manual. It was lacking in a lot of fine details, and seemed ti have been made just to gloss over everything and make it look good. Ok, but not great.

3 out of 5 stars They Don't make them like they used too.......2007-08-29

Nice Diagrams, a few VERY good light saber comparison pages, nice description of companies that make the weaponry but mostly underwhelming with little information or obvious information on the actually weapons as well as very poor renders of the few that were rendered. I never got the original of this book but I did have the original Essential guide to vehicle's and vessels and it was MUCH better with no render only black and white artist sketches as well as more interesting diagrams.

            5 out of 5 stars A job well done........2007-06-15

I was extremely pleased with what I got when I purchased this guide. It gives a detailed description of the anatomy, history, and use of every item in Star Wars. This guide is broken into sections. These are ranged weapons, melee weapons, starship and planetary weapons, superweapons, defenses and armor, security, and other equitment. The ranged weapons section covers everything from the simple dart shooter to the lethal disruptor rifle. Melee is similar, and it gives many descriptions of Yuuzhan Vong melee weapons(ugh). Starship and planetary weapons section covers many things, and the superweapons section is a very interesting section. I value this guide over the Vehicles and Vessels guide. Its setup is more structured and organized. In the beginning of this guide you can find a Major Manufacterers guide. Ian Fullwood has done an excellent job illistrating this guide. You can see everything. I strongly reccomend this guide to anyone who likes Star Wars, and it really helped me get into Star Wars. A must-have.

            5 out of 5 stars Nice!.......2006-11-21

Tis book expands on the weapons/technology used in the Star Wars universe, not just what's seen in the movies but also what appears in the books. The artwork/pictures in the book have been updated, they have a more realistic look to them.

Hippocrene Books had a series of composers, "His Life and Times". My favorites are the Beethoven (by Ates Orga) and this one of Bartok by Hamish Milne. The books are full of illustrations and are also richly detailed biographies. They don't take the place of serious college or grad school research, but they are absolutely appropriate for high school and undergraduate research, or anyone just wanting to get into the story of who Bartok was and why he was such a great composer. Book Description

Appetites and Identities is a clear, inviting and fascinating introduction to the social anthropology of western Europe. It covers food, migration, politics, urban and country life, magic, religion, sex and language in an accessible and straightforward fashion, introducing the student to aspects of the anthropology of contemporary European culture from mussel farmers in the Netherlands to Basque chambermaids in Lourdes, and from unhappy bachelors in Western Ireland to unwitchers in Portugal.

Avoiding the technical language of many anthropological textbooks, Appetites and Identities sets out the anthropological literature on the rich diversity of dialects, cultures and everyday lives of western European people, offering fascinating insights on how each region and community differs from its counterparts despite the notion of an integrated Europe. The book will stimulate curiosity about social anthropological investigation, and about life in Europe today.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An well done introduction of Western European society........1998-11-26

An easy read, this text is an excellent overview of some of the issues faceing European society and social anthropology. Despite the fact that it deals primarily with more time honnored subjects it is an excellent source for further reading. Moreover, it gives the student/ novice/ or beginner anthropologist 'food for thought' and leads the reader to question and prepare for more complex problems in Europe. In addition, it confronts contemporary topics such as tourism which as a globalk phenomenum is not exclusively European and thus has further applications.
