Beautiful book examining the works of a poignant American artist.......2007-08-20

I became introduced to the artist "Albert Bierstadt," in my art history class a few years ago, and I have been a fan of his work ever since.
Having trained in Europe, like many American artists of the 19th century, Bierstadt embarked upon a series of expeditions to the far west of America in his late twenties. It was as if he felt a need to know the full scope of his adopted country before he could settle down and paint. What he discovered on these adventures in the West revealed to him the extraordinary majesty of an untouched America. The west was still a wilderness, where native Americans lived without polluting or disrupting the natural majesty of the land. For those cities in the cities of the East, who, until then had had no concept of what the non-industrialized heartland of their country looked like, Bierstadt's work was astonishing and uplifting.
Bierstadt's paintings of the American wilderness also have an implicit spiritual significance. The land he painted was a paradisiacal world, a world of great simplicity and purity, into which human beings were privileged to enter, and must do so aware of the responsibilities of their inheritance.

The best Bierstadt book out there.......2006-12-28

It's a shame that this book commands such high prices in used bookstores. It's certainly time for the publisher to reintroduce this fine book for the general book trade. The last few years has seen a resurrgence of interest in the Hudson River School and Bierstatd has always been my favorite American landscape artist. His works are monumental and part and parcel of the American experience. Think about it, before photography, Bierstadt's paintings went on national tour and were extremely popular as people got their first glimpse of the grandeur of Yosemite, the Rocky Mountains, and the Western landscape in general. Sure his works were embellished but only to elevate the subject matter, but in nature these sights transcend the human moment, which you can only describe by seeing it for yourself.

Informative yet slightly lacking.......2001-07-12

The huge colored cover led me to believe the book would be filled with likewise large color plates. Not so... most of the pictures are around 8" x 5" with the rest of the page left blank. Each picture has the history behind it which is great. Just wish the pictures themselves had been larger.

I was dissapointed in this book as The stereo images on the whole were just not good enoughas,as well as being to few. The book quality was good, I feel this book would have been have sold in one of the many cheap book stores.

Enjoyable.......2007-06-29

The pictures in this book are not bad, but nothing special. A couple of the girls are particularly lovely, and the 3-d feature is great, but overall I would not highly recommend it. I would only suggest it for someone who would like to check out the 3-d pics. There are (clothed)(few) pictures of Marilyn Monroe and other past celebs, nothing great.

Some of the best of that Era.......2006-11-21

Lloyd was a facinating and diverse man. Besides film and 3D photography, he also enjoyed painting and magic/mentalism as hobbies - all of which I shared until the 3D bug bit me hard as well.

Any 3D person who peruses eBay is familiar with the type of "nudie" 3D slides of that era. Because of his Hollywood connections, the beauty of Lloyds models stand very well above the standard stuff (in what other 3D collection can Betty Page seem only second-string?). Some of these girls were actually established, professional LA models who never posed nude for anyone else.

Lloyd's artistic sense also shines through, and the props, settings, color, composition and depth rise above nearly all the others in the genre. The book design itself is also a treat (and interesting to actually read!)

Ignore the complaints. Virtually any anaglyph book I've seen came with inferior glasses. Any dedicated 3Der who actually minds the glasses is also likely to have a good, substitute pair on hand. Registration mistakes are uncommon only in the more exclusive, pricey 3D portfolio books - which this book doesn't pretend to be. While I'd love to eventually see a well-made, high-end, dual image book, this is still worthwhile for any 3D, glamour or retro fan, especially at the low prices offered.

Use different 3-D glasses.......2006-07-23

Many of the reviews here complain that the anaglyph conversions are misaligned. This is somewhat true of a few pictures. The real problem is that the 3-D glasses provided with the book are just plain terrible and the images suffer considerable 'bleed-through.' Use standard red/cyan 3D glasses and most of the pictures are magnificent.

The anaglyph conversions were poor, to put it nicely.
(Honestly, I've seen better in TV Guide.)
I'm a stereo aficianado, and was quite disappointed that none of the original stereo photos were included.
Also, not all of the photos were 3-D, and I found it quite annoying to be putting on and taking off the glasses every third page or so.

30yrs after the fact.......2006-06-28

Bought this after seeing SLF play in Chicago 06.06. They still deliver. The book is a long interview conducted by a superfan who interjects himself too much for this to be journalism. What is missing is in fact the actual lyrics to the songs they are talking about. There's some true funny bits and some interesting factoids and its a fair read, but overall it's a loosely charted conversation that could have better served the subject.

I want more.......2005-04-11

Stiff Little Fingers have been a favorite band of mine for a number of years now, mostly for their first two albums, Inflammable Material and Nobody's Heroes. This book has some really interesting insight into what made them tick. It's basically a really long interview between Alan Parker (SLF Superfan), and Jake Burns. It's got some pre-band and pre-first album background on them getting their start, and then takes on a format of basically going through every track on every album and having Jake explain what it was written about, when, and why. They also stop and note lineup changes as they occured between albums and tours and whatnot.

The information it has is really great, as well as easy and fun to read. It definetly made me pull out SLF records that I hadn't listened to in a while, like Go For It or Flags and Emblems, and give them another listen. I really wish it was a bigger and broader book though. I wanted more touring stories, and it would be nice to hear what other folks from the Rigid Digits roster have to say about being from Belfast's best. So it's a good read, but not a comprehensive band bio by any means.

good for what it does, but..........2007-08-05

This is good for what it does -- interpreting the body actions you and others display at the poker table. And some of the stuff is helpful. it will improve your game.

But body language is not nearly as important as other things. Like understanding which hands to play, how to put other players on hand ranges, how stack size influences play, and so on.

So you are better off reading a bunch of other books first. this might be the 6th or so book i'd recommend reading.

Basic Poker Information.......2007-05-09

If you are new to poker then this book might be worth the money. Frankly, anyone who has watched TV Poker for more than a year has probably picked up most of this stuff from the commentators. Today everyone is an expert, and lots of the stuff they spout is from Caro's book. So newbies will find it useful, but anyone who has played awhile or watched much TV poker might not get much out of it.

Caro's Book of Tells is essential to cracking a tough game.

Mike Caro gives the reader an excellent insight into the psychology of poker and explains the meaning of opponents' actions and verbals. He unlocks the secrets to reading opponents perfectly and helps the reader understand how to remain "tell-less" when he/she is the one in the hot-seat.

If you sit in an easy game, this book will transform you from being a consciencious winner to being a consistantly massive winner. This is no exaggeration!
Also, if you sit in a tough game, Caro will give you a huge edge over those who haven't read the Book of Tells, and hence your profits will soar.

This is a classic of poker literature, it's true, but I think it's overrated and ranks way down the list of essentials. There are at least 20 other poker books I would recommend before it. The problem is that applying the book's concepts is really a very nebulous business.

Very helpful book on the psychology of poker........1998-10-08

This book is bound to improve your game in at least two ways. First, other players will begin revealing their hands to you -- and you won't even have to pay to see them. Second, it will cause you to reevaluate your own actions (tells). Many players try to "tell" their opponents disinformation. However, Caro (and his readers) see right through this "first grade psychology", and find the real meaning in tells. Knowing what they look for is the first step in the process of getting rid of your own tells.

This is a clever book that tends to take itself a bit too seriously. The pictures are great and there is a large bit of insight to be gained from this book. The best book for increasing your poker winnings? NO. Worth buying? Yes.
