4 out of 5 stars Finally a book about artistic rendering of muscles and skeletons I could get interested in!.......2007-06-25

One of the reasons I enjoyed this book is that the author was able to demonstrate more clarity over the muscle and skeletal books. I have several other anatomy books where it becomes too medical.

I think the problem is that people are looking for a beautiful style in anatomy books. I think that is the WRONG approach. You're supposed to learn how to draw anatomy, not look for pretty illustrations. Get a coffee table book if that's what you're looking for.

The book demonstrates with enough clarity if you find Bridgman too sketchy and others too boring.

There are some drawbacks to the book if you're looking to understand how different joints move, but there will never be that ONE anatomy book that makes you able to draw. The illustrations done matter, but rather how you can understand and PRACTICE.

Many artists just give up expecting a book will be the end all. I've received many books and I'd recommend this book to an intermediate that gets beyond understanding the blocks and cylinders construction and want to push their artwork further.

Just an editing note. Someone had asked for reference of the Pelvis, and I had scanned various anatomy books such as Peck's, Jack Hamm's and Sheppard's. They found Sheppard's illustrations to have the most clarity and understanding.

2 out of 5 stars Not one of the better anatomy books.......2007-05-31

There are much better books out there if you want to learn to draw the figure and understand anatomy. Sheppard is a decent artist, but his style isn't particularly clear, or beautiful, or any other adjective that would make it ideal for instruction. While this book is fairly cheap, that's only because it's short and seems very dated. No one book is going to make you an anatomy expert, but unless you don't know any better, I think you'll be sorely disappointed with this one.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad as a starting place!.......2003-02-26

I found that the range of poses and angles for noses, eyes and the mouth were very useful. I also thought that it was a lot less like a medical book than some, which from my point of view was good. The charcoal/chalk images are fine for gaining an idea of where you want to go, but they do lack detail. I think this book is an ideal reference book but should be used in conjunction with others.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for students!.......2002-12-04

If you find Bridgeman a little too loose, Peck not fully clear, and others a little too medically oriented ... this might be the anatomy book for you. I have either bought or borrowed EVERY drawing book there is, and for anatomy this is the best thing out there for me. The companion text - "Drawing The Living Figure" - is also indespensable for the different views of exterior appearance built by the interior structure. Though there is always the possibility they're not your cup of tea, for most students these two are perfect and will teach you everything you need to know about artistic anatomy without costing an arm and a leg.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Reference and workboook.......2001-10-14

If you are interested in drawing the human form this book, in my humble opinion, is not only a wonderful place to start, but also an excellent reference and workbook to practice drawing from. It covers Arm, hand, leg, foot, torso, neck, head, and builds up each part from bone to full surface anatomy from several views and several positions (flexed, relaxed, turned in or out, etc.).
The complete figure is covered in the last chapter.

    Book Description

Based on “Gray's Anatomy,” the classic reference volume used for more than a century by medical students around the world, “Pocket Anatomy” offers a brand-new approach to the study of human body structure. Featuring all the fine illustrations found in the original, this new book presents a fresher, more accessible text that explains in lay terms exactly how the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone. Although it possesses the reliability and authority of a technical manual, “Pocket Anatomy” is organized so that non-specialist readers can understand both text and illustrations. Each bone joint and muscular group is shown from a variety of angles and poses, allowing readers to get a full understanding of its function. Not only medical students, but artists and art students will find “Pocket Anatomy” an invaluable and visually appealing reference source. Printed in full color, it presents 350 illustrations.

                  Book Description

First published in 1977, this popular book has become the source on film and media. Now, James Monaco offers a revised and rewritten third edition incorporating every major aspect of this dynamic medium right up to the present. Looking at film from many vantage points, How to Read a Film: Movies, Media, Multimedia explores the medium as both art and craft, sensibility and science, tradition and technology. After examining film's close relation to such other narrative media as the novel, painting, photography, television, and even music, Monaco discusses those elements necessary to understand how films convey meaning and, more importantly, how we can best discern all that a film is attempting to communicate. In a key departure from the book's previous editions, the new and still-evolving digital context of film is now emphasized throughout How to Read a Film. A new chapter on multimedia brings media criticism into the twenty-first century with a thorough discussion of topics like virtual reality, cyberspace, and the proximity of both to film. Monaco has likewise doubled the size and scope of his "Film and Media: A Chronology" appendix. The book also features a new introduction, an expanded bibliography, and hundreds of illustrative black-and-white film stills and diagrams. It is a must for all film students, media buffs, and movie fans.

I had to buy this book for a Topics in Film: Independent Film class so I didn't have a choice in which book to buy. This book while has an interesting ideas, but overall this is an opinion of a person that is showed as a fact. We have film making students in our class and a lot of them disagree with some points that the author is talking about. While movie is subjective to begin with it, so is the discussion about the movies. There is a lot of historical information in there that it feels like this book is more for Art History rather then about movies. Overall not a very bad book and has some good information, just be prepared to read a lot.

5 out of 5 stars The lucid must read for film theory students.......2005-09-23

This book is the most lucid textbook on film theory. While there are many other written textbooks on film theory, I have found the few other textbooks that I encountered either full of trivia or too watered down or almost like commentaries rather than text books.

This book examines cinema from the technical, evolutionary and cultural perspectives and also gives the most lucid exposition of the work of various film theorists like Metz, Mitry, Eisentein, Kracauer, Wollen and others.

Particularly relevant are the explanations of differences between montage and mise en scene approaches, types of montage and grand syntagmas of cinema (cinematic grammars).

It also sounds and reads like a deft synthesis of all that can be said about cinema rather than as a loosely strung collection of information that students might seek.

It also contains one of the most comprehensive and relevant bibliographies on film theory.

5 out of 5 stars Or, how to ethically use a film in this Information Age.......2004-03-23

James Monaco states early on if that poetry is something one can't translate, and if art is something one can't define, then film is something that can't be explained. He tries to in this book. Film is shaped by politics, philosophy, economics and the technology of a society, with that last being more a key factor with the digital revolution. How To Read A Film-Movies, Media, Multimedia is more than just a book on film technique, history, and theory. It's that last word in the title that is given emphasis on in the last section, including the emphasis that the book is also about How To USE a Film.

Techniques are covered include lighting, aspect ratio, tracks, film grade, and codes. And yes, there is the requisite film history, which is heavily condensed and goes through individual directors, countries, and certain genres in film. As only one chapter's devoted to it, but it's a quick cram-course in who's who, who-directed-what?, who-starred-in-what?, and what was going on in such-and-such a country.

Another interesting concept is the terms film, cinema, and movies. The terms are defined in the way we look at the medium. Film is what it's called in relationship to the world, i.e. politics. Cinema refers to a more aesthetic and intellectual stance. And movie is a named when defined as a consumer-oriented, economic commodity. The terminology is interesting when one defines a performance as the sum of the actor's persona in conflict with the role he plays.

Monaco then spends some time discussing the two schools, expressionism/formalism versus neorealism/functionalism. Expressionism, derived in Germany from such masters as Fritz Lang and F.W. Murnau, focuses on the inner aspect of humanity, using symbols, stereotypes, stylization, which eventually influenced directors such as Hitchcock and Welles. Formalism, more from the Soviet masters like Sergei Eisenstein, is more analytic and scientific, concerned with technique. There are discussions of montage (series of shots that advance the action) vs. mis-en-scene (deep focus photography that allows more audience participation in the film experience) and the schools of thought that argued in favour of one over the other. There's an interesting observation by Andre Bazin, who saw film as the asymptote to reality, the imaginary line that nears but never touches reality, which if put into conjunction into the earlier definition of film being something that can't be explained.

All this leds to multimedia and virtual reality. Most of the latter deals with the information age, detailing the history of computers and Internet, which led to the control and access to information. This ties in with the ethics regarding copyright in the merging of texts, images and sound, and downloading MP3's in this postmodernist, recontextualization of art, where film sits squarely. Doesn't this surely affect burning DVD's from the Net, which serves to accelerate already shrinking box office takings? Monaco quotes Lenin on how ethics is the esthetics of the future, sums this dilemma up pretty well.

Monaco uses the example of David Bowman, the astronaut in 2001, and the virtual cage he's in at the end of the movie, to describe how our closed personalized environments, created to block out the noisy outside world, may give us security, i.e. Discmans, cellphones, VCR viewings as opposed to theatrical outings, but at the cost of losing touch visually and morally from our surroundings. Invaluable due to its being not only about the past of film, but its future as well.

                  2 out of 5 stars misleading title.......2004-03-06

The title is misleading. The book does not help you to understand a film. It just sketches the history of films and film theories. I am a novice to the field and had hoped to get a better understanding of films, but was disappointed.

                  1 out of 5 stars Over-rated and irritating.......2003-08-15

I have no idea how this book has remained in print for over 20 years. It is, quite simply, ghastly. Monaco has a slick, laid-back style which might make some think he is being 'reader-friendly', but it conceals an almost total lack of organisation. Monaco simply chucks out thoughts and ideas at random, drifting aimlessly from one subject to the next. There is nothing about auteur theory, for example. There is very little about editing. If you want to sit down and learn in a structured way about the language of film, the history of film, or indeed anything about film this is not the book for you. It is only worthwhile as the kind of book you read random chunks from while on the toilet.

The organization and the context of the survey reflect its introductory intent and aids the student in gaining an increased awareness of the heritage of popular music: to appreciate its diversity; to perceive the underlying kinship of its many styles; to sense its evolutionary momentum.

4 out of 5 stars Good text on American Pop Music.......2004-12-05

I find this textbook to be very good, especially compared to those in its field.

Starting with a brief introduction, the textbook covers the basics of musical sound (beat, timbre, dynamics) and then touches on the elements and sources of popular music. The book then begins historically with minstrel songs ("Oh Susanna" and the like), Ragtime, the Blues, Jazz, Broadway, Tin Pan Alley, Latin Music, and finally Rock and Jazz Fusion (with a little bit of disco and punk).

What's great about this textbook is that even it is accessible for undergraduate college students and even high schoolers, the material is presented in a scholarly fashion. I've not always found that to be the case when it comes to writings about rock music. You can find a lot of fluff out there.

The textbook also has a companion 5-CD set purchased separately. I feel it is extremely helpful, and the book refers to the recordings ALL THE TIME. It's really necessary. There are some songs referred to where Campbell was unable to get the copyright permission, but he has a Discography list at the back of the book for those interested.

This book gets four stars mainly because it's so light on rock after the sixties. The eighties has very little material, and there is only one hip-hop example (Public Enemy). The book really needs a new edition.

Don't use this book for a course on rock alone, but it works great as a text on popular music.

                  5 out of 5 stars I've met Dr. Campbell.......2003-02-02

and took his class. I'm pretty sure he even knows me by name. I bought the book, but never read it. I've yet to return the book, so someday in the future, i may read it. But if that book is one tenth as good as his lectures and computer notes were, then i give it my full endoresement.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, entertaining, and informative........1999-09-27

I am a college instructor and have decided to use this book in my History of Popular Music class. I found this book to be very thorough and concise and stays focused on relevant material. I also appreciate the use of historical context when describing a period of music. This book is fun, entertaining, and very informative as it relays the development of our pop music. A must read for music lovers--even if you are not in school!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of the evolution of music in America.......1999-09-03

The Beat Goes On provides an excellent view of how we got from "Oh, Susanna" to "My Sharonna".The only problems are caused by trying to cover so much material in one book. Anyone who wants to learn why what we listen to sounds they way it does should get this book. Hihgly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars unusual focus, weak execution.......2001-01-16

John Dickerson would have been better off just aiming to write a book focusing on women's advances in the music industry, both behind the scenes and on the public face. But he overreaches, building Women on Top around the thesis that 1996 was a breakthrough year, the first time female solo artists outsold male solo artists. The problem is that he attaches so many qualifiers to this thesis that it ultimately points to a triumph for semantics rather than a triumph for women. He spends paragraphs explaining how he did the calculations, but his methods are dodgy. For example, he classifies the Bangles as a solo artist on the basis that all members sang, but he excludes the Beatles despite their meeting the same criterion.

Dickerson supports his argument with personality profiles. He chronicles specific women's achievements throughout the history of popular music, both the stars and the businesswomen behind the scenes whose accomplishments are less known. It is the latter that makes this book unusual relative to others on women in music. However, another weakness is that Dickerson's coverage is heavily slanted towards those who work in country music. He never clarifies whether this is because country music is more female-friendly than other genres or simply because these were the women to whom he had access to interview.

His collection of profiles clearly documents the barriers of sexism that so many women in the music industry have encountered, and the tales of success are inspirational. But Dickerson undermines his credibility by making too definitive, too broad a statement. The individual bricks are solid, but there are gapping holes in the wall.
