Excellent!.......2007-07-23
During my 11th grade highschool year I took the Art History AP test WITHOUT ever taking an Art History course. My only review materials were the "Annotated Mona Lisa" (also a great book) and REA's Art History. One of the best study guides I have EVER used for any AP test, REA covers the material rationally and in depth. I owe my preparedness for the Art History exam to REA (I got a 5!).
If you had to choose between a 10 pound Art encyclopedia and REA's guide in order to prepare for your test, choose REA!
Great Review Book!.......2007-07-20
I took an Art History course that was not AP, and thus covered extra material outside of class in order to take the exam. I used this book to help review before the exam, and I received a 5. This book was great for review and really covered the essential topics, as opposed to my very detailed notes for class and massive textbook (I used Janson). It also helped a great deal to fill me in on areas we did not cover, but because art is such a broad subject and the exam can cover such a range of material, not everything was included (but that can't exactly be expected!). The timed practice tests were really useful for getting a hang of the test. I loved the lists in the back of important works, female artists, and American artists- they showed up on the exam as promised by my teacher and this book! I would absolutely recommend this book for review, in conjunction with other sources to cover as much material as possible.
MOST Helpful!.......2007-05-21
I purchased this book for my 10 grade son. He definitely put in about three weeks of solid study and focus. After he took the AP Art History test, he said that every question he recalled reading in the book! I would consider this book for your student as well!

Great Study Aid and Great Book For Reference.......2007-08-12
Students in the Atlanta area have found this book to be very helpful for preparation on the AP Art History exam. Adult friends with an interest in art history have bought the book and found that the book along with the 400 picture CD is a great resource.
Dedicated authors.......2007-07-15
These dedicated authors have produced a book that is a superior study aid and a reference for those who appreciate art history. Details regarding the classics are impressive and sample tests are well written. A must for all AP Art History students.
great review .......2007-05-13
This book includes so much information and the tests are great because they give you a detailed description of every correct answer! I bought the book because my teacher wrote it but I'm reading it because it is a great review!
Customer Reviews:
The material in this book is totally unrelated to the AP Art History.......2007-01-26
If you are looking for an AP Art History book, this is not the one to buy, as the material covered in the book is totally unrelated to the exam.
Awful, wasting my $29.95...........2006-06-26
I bought this book thinking that perhaps, out of all the reviews, the book could help me, NOPE. No help. As I opened it, I was astonished, the printing job of a $30 book seems to be made at Kinko's-- ridiculous. I don't know why Rudman even made the darn thing.
Your best bet is the Annotated Mona Lisa. But beware, its is quite Annotated, you'll have to dual it with you actual textbook. I made charts for myself, it really helped me straighten out the time periods and artists, the process of making it was key or else I would post it up for some AHAPer's.
Follow the trend expressed here--do not buy this book!!.......2005-07-22
I have never sent in a review of a book before, but I must for this poor excuse of a review book. Since there is no other book which has been written on reviewing for this mammoth test, you might easily be suckered into buying this. That would be a waste of your money! I teach AP Art History, and I hoped that the book would enable me to do a better job helping my students prepare for the notoriously difficult multiple choice sections. Well, many of the questions make no sense, and it is as if someone got this published with little knowledge of this test. Use the old released tests from the College Board, and don't waste your money on this sad excuse of a help.
Poor Book.......2005-07-07
I bought this book in the last few weeks to help me with my AP ART HISTORY exam. Although the slide part of the book is somewhat helpful, the multiple choice and essay are compete trash. I honestly think that the author just took random questions from a old college Art History book. Most questions have nothing or very little to do with Art History or the AP test, and are extermely diffcult.
I thought that if this book is like the AP test, I'm doomed. Well I took the AP test and can say that first off, it's very very easy. I scored a 5, but no thanks to this book......
DO NOT BUY.......2005-05-10
I am currently in AP Art History. After I purchased this book, I started taking the multiple choice practice tests. Since it seemed like the questions were completely out of the blue, I took the text to my art history teacher. He agreed and warned anyone else in the class about this review book, as it has absolutely nothing to do with the AP curriculum.
If you buy this poorly-made, poorly-written spiral bound book, you are simply wasting your money. I believe the two 5 star comments at the bottom of this page are by Jack Rudman himself.
Book Description

Great thing to have.......2004-01-16
This calender is not great if you want to mark large notes in. There is probably room for a few little reminders. If you are a Trigun fan like I am, you would definatly want to have this calender to look at everyday... the illistrations are just outstanding. Although there are little to none shots of Meryle, Millie, or the other Characters, there is certainly a lot of great pictures of Vash the Stampede and Wolfwood. A good buy overall.
good.......2004-01-12
All trigun lovers should have this. there is a full color picture on every month.
Book Description
Don Sheldon has been called 'Alaska's bush pilot among bush pilots', but he was also just one man in a fragile airplane who, in the end, was solely responsible for each mission he flew, be it a high-risk landing to the rescue of others from certain death in the mountains of Alaska or the routine delivery of supplies to a lonely homesteader. Read this book to learn how a hero was born, and also how he made his courageous journey to the unknown skies of dealing with cancer.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2007-02-25
Good book if you are interested in Bush Pilots in Alaska and flying.
Don Sheldon was a fearless, dedicated pilot.
great reading.......2007-02-22
The man character in this book is a amazing person and pilot.
I could not believe the true live experiences this person
lived through. A great book for any one who likes non fiction.
Mountain flying.......2006-11-05
If you like Mountains and Flying then this is a book for your library, most enjoyable.
Don was a friend of my Dad's.......2005-05-04
I have always treasured this book and other stories about Don Sheldon's adventures in the Alaskan interior. Don came to Talkeetna shortly after my Dad moved there, and they became great friends. I remember stories about Don's flying that Dad would tell me, from the time I was a small boy, so when he gave me a copy of the book it was like I was reliving adventures that had first-hand knowledge of. The book is great, and portrays a true pioneer of Alaskan aviation.
Cal
An inspiring story of a remarkable man.......2001-09-18
I was steered to this book through contacts with several alumni of the former Williamsport Technical Institute(predecessor of my employer, Pennsylvania College of Technology), where Don Sheldon received his airframe and powerplant license. The only appropriate word to describe his exploits is "amazing." It seems as if every time he stepped into his airplane, he stepped into the jaws of death, and it's hard to believe that he died (in 1975) from an illness, not a crash. Don Sheldon's courage and dedication should serve as examples to us all. A must-read for anyone who likes adventure.
Product Description
James Arness was born May 26, 1923, in Minneapolis. He entered college just as World War II began and dreamed of being a naval aviator. It seemed as if every night his fraternity was having a party to send off a brother to the service. Young Arness got his interview with a naval flight program officer, but his hopes vanished as he was informed that his six foot seven inch height disqualified him automatically. He wrote his draft board asking that they call him up as soon as possible and so he ended up as a private in the famed Third Infantry Division where he earned a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Because of his stature, he was chosen to be first off the landing craft (to test the depth of the water) when his division landed at Anzio, Italy. He was subsequently wounded by enemy machine gun fire and spent eighteen months recovering in overseas and stateside hospitals. Later his height would help him strike a commanding figure in the role of U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon of Dodge City. After Arness had toiled in Hollywood for a decade, John Wayne recommended him to CBS executives for the Gunsmoke part (after Wayne turned it down). As the principal performer of Gunsmoke for twenty years (19551975), the actor and the character took on mythic proportionsa born leader, honest and strong. Rare is the actor who has been cast in a role that so deeply fits his true self. James Arness gives a full account of his early years, his family, his military career, his film work in Hollywood which included appearances in the cult-favorite science fiction movies Them! and The Thing. He had a long run on Gunsmoke, a role in the highly popular television miniseries How The West Was Won, and his post-theatrical period is also covered. This is the long anticipated, never-before-told account of one of the icons of twentieth-century television. There are many personal revelations of interacting with some of the Gunsmoke family ensemble, such as Miss Kitty, Doc and Festus. His own work as a producer is covered. Throughout are rare, previously unpublished photographs from the author's personal collection. Appendices include comments by show biz colleagues and fellow Gunsmoke alumni, and a sampling of letters received from his legions of fans. As befits the man, this large-size book is a beautifully printed work in accord with the highest library standardsa luxurious and extra-strong cloth binding, acid-free paper, carefully designed photographic and textual layouts and sophisticated typography. Actor and fellow Gunsmoke performer Burt Reynolds has written a foreword to the book.
Customer Reviews:
Don't read this book if you're looking for Hollywood dirt..........2007-06-01
This was not the most detailed autobiography I've ever read, but that in itself seems to be very telling about the man. The book, like Matt Dillon and ultimately like James Arness, was short on words and didn't say anything unkind about anyone. We could use more Hollywood role models like this one!
Buy it PERSONALLY AUTOGRAPHED for same price at the Museum..........2007-02-09
I was given this book as a gift and like it. However, on 2/8/07 I discovered the "Museum Of The American West" (at Autry National Center, Los Angeles CA) has a website where you can Special Order this identical book --personally dedicated to you and signed by 'Matt Dillon' himself!-- for the same price ($39.95). Just go to their web page and type JAMES ARNESS in the search box. It'll lead you to the right page (listing is under 'Feature Items', not 'Books'), where you can enter your personalization info and pay online. Lacking an autograph, this book here ought to sell for less.
Best account of WWII landing I've read.......2005-08-17
What an interesting life James Arness has had. His account of his experience landing at Anzio in 1944 was the best account I've seen or heard because he was a private and first out expecting not to survive. His experiences during training and up to when he was wounded were so interesting. and his care afterword also. Being a lifelong Gunsmoke fan I found this book full of exciting, interesting facts and had to re-read it immediately as the first time I was up all night reading it and was tired and thought I might have missed some facts. The second reading was even better. Mr Arness's book could have been two or three times as long. I feel he could add lots more.
Maybe he'll write a sequel. I'd buy it in an instant.
Thoughtful Portrait of a Private Man.......2004-08-04
As a longtime fan of James Arness, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I've had a crush on him since I played with Barbie dolls and Silly Putty, and his book gave me the opportunity to learn more about this grateful, humble, private man. I would have enjoyed a little more about his Gunsmoke years, though. Especially since he's said to be such a cut-up and prankster. But his autobiography is filled with nice photos, fan letters and lots of special memories. I was also pleasantly surprised that he'd saved so many gifts and mementos sent to him by fans. It's gratifying to know that this big man--a hero to so many--is also very real and sentimental. I look forward to his next book.
For Gunsmoke/Arness fans only.......2004-06-08
Since the day the program debuted in 1955 through the next 20 years, I was a fan of Gunsmoke and tried never to miss an episode. Even today, if I can catch a rerun on cable, I always tune in. I consider it the best TV show ever. So, I was very interested in reading this autobiography of the actor who created Marshall Dillon. Unfortuantely, the book delivers in only a few areas. For a show that lasted a record 20 years, there are remarkably few anecdotes. It isn't until we get into Appendix A offering comments from actors on the show, that we realize why. James Arness was a loner. He didn't hang with the other actors. He came in, shot his scenes, then flew away. Further, he made it clear he wanted privacy and the other actors on the set respected that (or feared him) and stayed away. Appendix A, comments by regular actors on the show and crew, is roughly 25% of the book. It is followed by other appendices including comments by guest stars, fan letters, a filmography and an awards list, so we end up with a big chunk of the book containing self-serving material that added little except pages and flattering comments. The most interesting parts of the book describe Arness' life away from the set: his love of surfing, flying and his family. He only briefly touches on the two tragedies in his life: his divorce and his daughter's drug-induced death. Otherwise, it is all success and happiness. As he admits, he never went after anything, it all came to him. He had an almost picture perfect existance. There is one section of the book I would highly recommend, and that is his chapter on Anzio. It is extremely well written and transports the reader to a point where he feels he is there on the beach attacking with Jim. It is here where Jim is shot and the resulting injury got him back home and caused physical problems later in life. It was a fascinating interlude within an otherwise dull book. Now let me go see if Gunsmoke is on the tube anywhere.

Vaughan Williams Studies (Cambridge Composer Studies)

Book Description
In addition to his great prowess as a composer, Vaughan Williams was a man of strong character and unflagging energy, who lived a long, full life. He was at the centre of musical events in England for sixty years, a period which for sustained musical achievement is probably unequalled in the history of this country. Ursula Vaughan Williams's intimate and detailed biography of her husband used much material not hitherto available to scholars to produce a balanced and judicious portrait. It is now made newly available as a Clarendon Paperback.
Customer Reviews:
Splendid biography!.......2005-05-14
Written by his wife, Ursula, this is as authoratative as it gets. Filled with details, annecdotes, facts, histories and stories with a warmth that invites us to know and understand RVW as a person and as a composer.
I came to this book after reading many books about Gustav Holst. In doing so, I quickly learned of his friendship with RVW. The two were great friends. In this book, you get another perspective on that friendship and friendship with others. RVW was a kind, open, down-to-earth individual.
This is a remarakable biography about a remarkable human being. I'm glad he lived and wrote the music he shared with us all. This book helped me to understand the man and his times and his music. Highly recommended!
Book Description
The author of Pink Think takes on a twentieth-century icon: the college girl.
A geek who wears glasses? Or a sex kitten in a teddy? This is the dual vision of the college girl, the unique American archetype born when the age-old conflict over educating women was finally laid to rest. College was a place where women found self-esteem, and yet images in popular culture reflected a lingering distrust of the educated woman. Thus such lofty cultural expressions as Sex Kittens Go to College (1960) and a raft of naughty pictorials in men's magazines.
As in Pink Think, Lynn Peril combines women's history and popular culturepeppered with delightful examples of femoribilia from the turn of the twentieth century through the 1970sin an intelligent and witty study of the college girl, the first woman to take that socially controversial step toward educational equity. 75 illustrations, 8 pages of color.
Customer Reviews:
Never Be Sorry for Getting Educated.......2007-09-07
In this interesting read, author Lynn Peril chronicles the birth and development of the college girl. Ever since she appeared on the scene in the 19th century, the college girl has been the hot topic of conversation, incurring the curiosity--and wrath--of everyone from writers and philosophers to doctors and parents to social commentators. Whether it was doctors wondering whether "too much" education "endangered" her reproductive organs (Dr. Edward Clarke, who considered himself an expert in this area, claimed that too much education would leave a female college graduate with "undeveloped" ovaries) or books and magazines ("Seventeen" and "Better Homes and Gardens", just to mention a few) advising college-educated girls and women not to be "too smart" to avoid scaring away potential suitors or schools wondering whether women should learn "male" subjects such as math, history, ancient languages, and philosophy or "female" subjects such learning how to fix and operate an iron, the college girl has been constantly scutinized, ridiculed, and regulated over the years (and unfortunately, even today), all just for wanting to get an education.
Not only does this book contain a history of the college girl, it also contains some interesting info on the history of the women's colleges, such as Vassar, Mount Holyoke, Wellesley, and Bryn Mawr, among many others. But most importantly, I came away with an important message that's not in the book, but that I will pass on to you and that is: Never be sorry for wanting to get an education. No piece of advice, no warning, no admonishment, no outrageous medical or scientific claim should ever stop you or me.
Smart and Funny!.......2007-06-01
If you love Lynn Peril's column in BUST Magazine, "Museum of Femorbilia," you'll love COLLEGE GIRLS. A smart, funny, irreverent narrative of The College Girl deftly constructed from pop culture, women's history, advertising, and strange ancient texts that aren't really ancient at all, but that only Lynn Peril could find and synthesize in such an engaging manner.
College girls `.......2007-03-28
I always wondered what they were doing over there in the Girls Dorms. Now Lynn Peril has written a work which traces the development of women in the college world. While she starts with a first graduate in 1631 her focus is on developments from mid-nineteenth century to the nineteen - seventies. In this the theme of women's achieving equality in freedom over their own private lives is central. The world of over- supervision, and restriction yielded in time to the not necessarily happy one of women 'hooked up' in relationships in which sexual pleasure became 'ego trip' and intimacy and love, left on the sidelines. In between however there is the realm where greater woman's freedom and autonomy were at the heart of a general liberalization of campus life.
Peril uses a wide variety of sources to trace the developments in fashion, in style, in sleeping arrangements, in attitudes towards the marital and career prospects of college women. She makes use of students handbooks and yearbooks, advice manuals, popular novels. She provides a full picture of what their lives were like, and how they were transformed through the decades.
One central question again relates to intimacy and the dignity of women, with a strong suggestion that rampant promiscuity is not a sign of liberation but rather of a new kind of enslavement. Apparently the fuddy- duddies had it a bit right when they suggest that for most women sexual pleasure must come in the context of loving and committed relationships if they are to satisfy their deepest human needs.
BUY THIS BOOK.......2007-01-25
College Girls is the best book I've read in a long time. If you have any interest what so ever in women's history, college history, pop culture, etc. BUY THIS BOOK.
Rah! Rah! Rah!.......2006-10-02
As a longtime fan of Peril's -- from her absolutely excellent 'zine "Mystery Date" to her monthly "Museum of Femorabilia" column in BUST Magazine to her first book "Pink Think" -- I could not wait to get my hands on her latest book, "College Girls." In fact, I pre-ordered it on Amazon when I had first heard about it. And it did not disappoint. Full of facts, history, and yes -- a "we've come a long way, baby" feeling, but written in an engaging, accessible way that kept me going from the first page to the last, never feeling I was mired down in sermonizing. Peril's wit and superior knowledge (and what a reference library from which she culls!) takes us through history, with lots of fantastic anecdotes along the way. She tackles the serious (ie the first female scholars, racism, in loco parentis) and the fun (fashion, spreads, and time honored traditions). The well-chosen pictures that accompany the text are marvelous, too. It made me realize how lucky I was to be a college girl because of all the women who paved the way for me, and grateful because Peril wrote it all down. Every "sweet girl graduate" I know -- whether they are graduating from middle or high school, college, or did so long ago -- will be getting this book from me. Highly, highly rtecommended.
