The Rough Guide to Reggae 100 Essential CDs (Rough Guide 100 Esntl CD Guide)
Steve Barrow , and Peter Dalton Manufacturer: Rough Guides ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1858285674 |
Customer Reviews:
A difficult task, but well handled........2004-04-25
Authors Steve Barrow and Peter Dalton make the best of a difficult task, explaining in their introduction that a lot of what could be considered for their book isn't even currently obtainable. Long the preserve of small, provincial, shoestring operations, when Reggae records go out of print, they go way out. From the start it's been a Dj - based form, with records and even master tapes recycled or even just discarded the moment a particular tune lost local popularity. The last few decades have seen valiant rescue efforts by labels big and small, but some things are simply lost forever to time, shortsightedness and regional economics. Taken in this light, the authors' decision to stick with what's readily available is laudable - they obviously hope that people will go get the stuff they love and have little interest in bragging about all the cool stuff they've heard that no one else can get.
Additionally hampered by Reggae's heavy dance/singles orientation, Dalton and Barrow do the best they can. On first viewing, their volume seems heavy on Dancehall and Ska while being desperately light on Dub, Roots and Lovers Rock. More careful thought reveals that most of the best stuff consists of singles found only on compilations, not all in print: Listing 75 compilation discs might not play for a modern audience raised on 75 minute cds all by one artist. Barrow and Dalton make up for the rough ride by cramming as much history into each review as possible, giving the beginning listener as well as the seasoned expert a larger view of Reggae music and culture that inspired it. The wealth of names, dates and places makes the Reggae volume well worth the time.

Impartial to a fault.......2001-05-10
Perhaps the best endorsement I can give for the mini-Guide in itself is that I already had about two-thirds of the recommended albums in my collection, and have rarely been disappointed by the ones I have bought since (mainly because I strayed outside my preferred kinds of reggae). If the book has a fault, it's that in their concern to be impartial, representative and up-to-date, the authors include a few recent albums which may, for all I know, be among the best of their kind, but which to these ears don't match up to the classics I (and I suspect they) know and love. With a new edition of the big Guide imminent at the time of writing, I would obviously recommend that as the first-choice buy, but for the less committed, you can't go far wrong with this.
(NB: as clearly stated in the introduction quoted above, the Guide recommends a number of CDs on the Blood and Fire label run by Steve Barrow, but these were selected by his co-author Peter Dalton to avoid bias. Anyway, the CDs in question are among the strongest recommendations in the Guide, and reggae lovers around the world owe a massive debt of gratitude to Barrow for the dozens of classic albums he has compiled over the years.)

Rebels on the Air: An Alternative History of Radio in America

Book Description
"An anecdotal and readable history."nthposition online magazine"The most fascinating parts of the book are the stories of offbeat radio operations, which Walker describes with humor and empathy."The Review of Communication
"Both academics and radio enthusiasts will appreciate this book."
Library Journal
"Without a doubt, this is the most detailed and well-researched book ever published on the history of free radio in America. This includes the most comprehensive history ever written on the modern microradio movement; culled from personal interviews, the writing is mostly engaging and fast-paced...A must read."
The About Guide
"The book is a great addition to the literature of the ways in which the state uses regulatory edicts and strong-arm tactics to stifle people's freedom."
George C. Leef, Freedom Daily
"Jesse Walker's lively book is the first to offer a thorough history of what's come to be known as alternative radio."
Time Out New York
"The story of early radio broadcasting is a fascinating one and well told."Monitoring Times
"Walker goes a long way toward showing the considerable creativity in nonmainstream radio, despite its lack of funds and other problems. The strongest part of the discussion is that dealing with the last thee decades. An interesting balance to the perceived story of American radio."
Choice
Boring DJs who never shut up, and who don't even pick their own records. The same hits, over and over. A constant stream of annoying commercials. How did radio get so dull?
Not by accident, contends journalist and historian Jesse Walker. For decades, government and big business have colluded to monopolize the airwaves, stamping out competition, reducing variety, and silencing dissident voices. And yet, in the face of such pressure, an alternative radio tradition has tenaciously survived.
From the unlicensed amateurs who invented broadcasting to the community radio movement of the 1960s and 1970s, from the early days of FM to today's micro radio movement, Walker lays bare the hidden history of broadcasting. Above all,

Finally, a *true* history of how radio happened.......2001-11-27
Radio Ga Ga.......2001-10-15
In the course of telling tale after absorbing tale, Jesse Walker answers these questions and dozens of others in "Rebels on the Air."
Unlike most people who talk on the radio, however, Walker writing about radio doesn't come across as a simpleton. He is a very thoughtful appreciator of excellence as well as a fine diagnostician of failure. He understands the theory of radio as a business enterprise, and is unencumbered by a narrow ideology. He knows what happened; he is a master of fact. And he has insight into what might have happened; he is the master of the counterfactual. Further, being informed and no fool, he is as reliable prophet as any; it pays to listen to what he says.
From the beginnings of radio as point-to-point communication through its strange evolution to broadcasting, winding up in recent dispensations of "piracy," micro radio, community radio, and even the Citizens Band, Walker ushers the reader through a rogue's gallery of fascinating revolutionaries. Radio, it turns out, is not just a humdrum affair. It has featured strange people saying odd, perceptive and occasionally wise things, playing music other than top 40 or classical warhorses, turning listeners on their ears.
To most people, commercial radio and NPR delimit the narrow confines of the medium: to these, Walker's history will come as a revelation. To the knowing few who have heard (or at least heard of) Firesign Theater or Jean Shepherd or The Crazy Cajun Show, Walker is a sensible surveyor of diversity on radio, the ideal defender of both idiosyncratic entertainment and responsible "enlightenment."
Radio may usually be boring, but Walker's book is not. For anyone who cares about the medium or its messages, "Rebels on the Air" is indispensable.

Review in Radio the Story of WQXR.......2000-10-16
Category: Radio II. Book Content
The book Rebel in Radio The Story of WQXR was a book about a small radio station starting from merely nothing and becoming "The Radio Station of the New York Times." (pg. 95) The book was written by Elliot M Sanger who was a partnership in the radio station. In the book he told of the difficulties in starting a radio station and competing with other radio stations within reach. The Book begins around the time or the great depression. At this time Television sets were nearly non-existent which made the radio programming the major means of mass communications. Everyone all of the world would tune in to hear the popular radio shows. At this time in history everything was portrayed on the radio. The local news, the weather, and even soap operas of this time were heard throughout the day on the radio. Instead of a family gathering around a television set as we do now families gathered around the radio. WQXR was a small A.M. radio station that emerged around this time. Elliot Sanger and Jack Hogan opened the Radio Station. They wanted to make the radio station similar to a newspaper. The Radio station in the book that these 2 men wanted to operate broke from the norms of the other radio stations. They wanted to find a way to give the people something more than just a common radio program. The men believed that the other radio stations out there were all just music sometimes and sponsoring constantly. The reason they felt the other stations were doing this is that a radio station must have sponsors to obtain money. A radio station must obtain money to succeed but Sanger felt that fewer sponsors and more music would help his station succeed. So the program policy of WQXR, which is described in the book, is a policy of less sponsoring and more entertaining music. WQXR's program policy described in the book also strived to bring only the best classical music throughout the day. They wanted to play music that would please every listener that tuned in. The people loved the radio station but the lack in sponsors lead to the partial sale to the New York Times. People wanted more of the station but the station couldn't afford to get out to the people. The music they played was so diverse that it attracted an audience from wide areas. The New York Times joined partnership in the radio station and as it grew it became so popular that it became known as "Americas No. 1 Fine Music Station." (104) Overall the book describes the evolution of a very small A.M. radio station starting in a time when fine music was unappreciated to a King of radio playing fine classical music for all to here. The book described the struggle of the radio station and how it overcame the normal programming and sponsors and lead the way for radio stations today all over the world.
III. Personal Evaluation I felt the book, Rebel in Radio the Story of WQXR, was a good book. The factual information in the book would be very beneficiary to someone interested in running a successful radio station. I feel that too many of the radio stations still today do not fully understand the subject in the book described as "pleasing the audience."
