Needed this book for class. The teacher is awful, but the text book is not.

4 out of 5 stars Classic sword and sorcery fantasy with a dash of sci-fi........2004-04-24

Found this one in a 2ndhand bookstore and kept it in my bookshelf for a few years to ferment like fine wine...dusted it off recently...and, I must say, vintage sword, sorcery and sci-fi...al the ingredients for a good read for any fan of sci-fi/fantasy.

To begin with: this book is a one-off by Adrian Cole (seems he's writtem several other fairly popular sci-fi/fantasy series but which I have not come across). Actually, I would find it hard to classify this one. Its not really sci-fi, not really sword and sorcery. Put in a spot, I'd say that this would make a great script for a graphic novel; and I won't be surprised if it has been made into one - I note that it was first published in 1993; plenty of time for someone to have discovered its potential as a graphic novel...or..dare I say it...a movie?

In a nutshell the story goes like this: Conan-the-Barbarian type berserker (from the Magmannon clan) in a Scotland-like place gets captured along with two other brothers-in-arms by strange men who are obviously more civilised - since they have gun-like weapons and breathing apparatus - and sent through a warp/rift in the fabric of space/time called The Overlap into a hellish world. How hellish you might ask: well, this world is covered by perpetual dark storm clouds called Skydown; there's a dusk but that's as bright as it gets. Almost the entire surface of this world is covered by a tall reeds and swamp. There is a very long, very wide elevated road going in a straight line thru' the reeds and swamp. It takes the traveller to what can only be described as the only city in this world; called "Thousandreach" a labrynthine city of immense proportions and towers that rise above Skydown, There are also giant trees that the city seems to have merged into and which also rise above Skydown and these trees are held as sacred.

Interestingly there is no flora (besides the reeds) and some very strange fauna - which we later are given hints that these creatures are genetically-modified humans...which brings us to the really hellish part: see if there are no plants and animals what do the inhabitants in this world eat? We are told fairly early on that they eat "Fodda" (a shortened way of saying "fodder", I guess) and Fodda is human!!! See in this world there's a serious pecking order...right at the bottom of the food-chain literally, we have Fodda who are human-cattle (and we are given hints that being eaten is not all the Fodda have to put up with). Then above them there are various ranks (e.g Drones, Overseers, Tormentors, etc). Near the top of the food-chain we have the Providors who each serve to one of the many Elevates who, in turn serve, the Lightbenders - the head honchos of this world. The Lightbenders (it is unquestionably believed) serve Absolute Light, which I interpreted to be the collective of gods of this world - and there are glimpses of these gods near the end of the story.

The Providors, Elevates and Lightbenders all have their respective private armies - some I can only comprising mechanical robot-like or genetically-altered soldiers. All of them (the Providers, Elevates and Lightbenders) are constantly locked in intrigues and politics and would give much to see their fellow Provider, Elevates or Lightbender turned into Fodda. But being a bit too comfortable in their respective silos/ivory towers, they don't involve themselves much with the general populace and have the Angel Guard to quash any dissent and/or for the odd assasination.

The Angel Guards themselves comprise three orders, and are held in awe by almost all the inhabitants of this world as the ultimate killing machine - they would give aliens a good run for their money. They regards themselves as free agents cum policemen and have to be commissioned by a Provider (for Elevate) to take on any specific assignment - with payment terms agreed to upfront.

For completeness, I should also mention the Skryers - the intellectual/mystical elite, who like the Angel Guard regard themselves as essentially free agents but are in reality aligned to one or other of the Elevates.

Against this backdrop we have the story: An Angel Guard is sent to track down three Externals (those who come into the world - willingly or otherwise, but from what we have been told, who would want to come in willingly) who managed to escape into the reeds. The Angel Guard is struck by some mysterious force (and what force could be physically stronger than an Angel Guard?) and made permanently blind.

Meanwhile two of the bonnie lads have joined the ranks of Fodda (there are ways to preserve meat without a fridge) with one becoming that way courtesy of the blind angel. The third meets up with a comely External (don't they always) and together with a demoted Providor, and with the support of an rebel Elevate this motley crew go on a quest to liberate the peoples under Skydown.

Okay so I am trivializing the story. But I think it was a great story...maybe not so good a story if one read it as a fantasy novel but rather as a parody of the corporate world! If the gods are shareholders then we have the Board of Directors as the Lightbenders, and the President, CEO, CFO, COO and such senior management as the Elevates and their respective lackeys (Vice Presidents?) as the Providers. Inasmuch as the Lightbenders regard everyone below their level as Fodda, so to do senior management often regard everyone else as expandible - especially if it would get them more stock options.

Conclusion: damned good story...but, for me at least, better as a study of the corporate world.

The Angels of Light were more than a seminal performance troupe in the 1970s; growing out of the equally legendary Cockettes in San Francisco (led by the charismatic Hibiscus, and subject of the award-winning documentary The Cockettes), the Angels were a way of life, putting on trashy, fantastical fairy tales come to life in a city and an era that was in the blissful throes of early gay liberation.

Adrian Brooks was a pivotal member of the Angels; he was the author of many of their shows, and appeared in almost all of their productions during their heyday from late 1974 to 1980. In this vivid memoir, San Francisco in the 1970s comes to life as Brooks recounts the amazing stories of the Angels from behind closed doors, a book that is much about the politics of hippie experience in North America at the time. He also describes his early years as a Pennsylvania youth whose life is transformed by social and political activism: as a radical anti-war Quaker, as a volunteer for Martin Luther King, and later in New York's gallery scene, passing through Andy Warhol's circus before heading west, where the Angels made perfect, beautiful sense of the world.

Featuring more than 50 full-colour photographs by Daniel Nicoletta, a freelance photographer who worked in Harvey Milk's camera store in San Francisco in the 1970s, Flights of Angels is a remarkable, elegiac ode to the ecstasy and defiance of queer life and culture before the AIDS crisis.

                      5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-09-04

I read all three of this sequel. Cole can write. Was actually great to have all three at one time, so I didn't have to wait for the next installment.

                      5 out of 5 stars Western Theme/Scottish Highland book.......2007-08-13

There is no supernatural/paranormal "stuff" in this series.

They are wonderful reads! Well written, move right along. Start right out.

Even though Court is a displaced highlander (turned mercenary) it's set in western timeframe in another country.

                      Very nice romance.

                      4 out of 5 stars GOOD READ.......2007-07-20

This is my first Kresley Cole book and won't be my last. I liked the tension between the main characters and I even like the small side story of her brother and his own little romance. Had REALLY HOT love scenes. I'm looking forward to reading the second book in the series.

4 out of 5 stars IF YOU DARE.......2007-05-29

I USUALLY DO NOT READ SI-FICTION AND HAVE NOT ENJOYED THEM IN THE PAST. BUT I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE CAPTIVATING WITH MORE ROMANCE WITH A GOOD DOSE OF FICTION THROWN IN. COURT AND ANNALIA TOOK YOU ON A JOURNEY OF SUSPENSE AND ADVENTURE AND LOVE. I HATED THAT IT HAD TO END WHEN I FINISHED THE BOOK BUT I LOOKED FORWARD TO IF YOU DESIRE.

The art. The craft. The business. Animation Writing and Development takes students and animation professionals alike through the process of creating original characters, developing a television series, feature, or multimedia project, and writing professional premises, outlines and scripts. It covers the process of developing presentation bibles and pitching original projects as well as ideas for episodes of shows already on the air. Animation Writing and Development includes chapters on animation history, on child development (writing for kids), and on storyboarding. It gives advice on marketing and finding work in the industry. It provides exercises for students as well as checklists for professionals polishing their craft. This is a guide to becoming a good writer as well as a successful one.

5 out of 5 stars Animation writing and Development From script to development to pitch.......2007-08-23

An excellent book that covers all aspects of writing for animation, and I do mean ALL aspects. Nothing is left out. Jean Ann Wright really knows her stuff. And buying the book from Amazon was easy and painless. That's why I use them and why I will continue to use them.

2 out of 5 stars Too much information.......2006-09-22

The book covers tons and tons of topics, which is good for a person with no background in animation writing. But the topics written about, from dialogue to outlining, come with no context, no examples to back up what the author is talking about. Wright writes "Keep your characters consistent. They must be true to their core traits and to what has made them who they are." An example from a current or classic cartoon is direly needed. This happens throughout the book. Under the subheading Conflict Can Reveal Information in the dialogue chapter, she writes "conflict in dialogue...is a good way to get information out and keep it interesting." How? Once again this book screams for examples.
The book trys to explain every thing and any thing about animation. A daunting task. But in the process, every thing seems trite. The chapter on writing features, aka movies, is skimmed, and after reading it, will not make your more apt at writing animation films. Scriptwriting for film is different, in many aspects, from tv animation, and in this book it's made to sound that it's the same.
Overall the book is informative, but for someone who grew up with Scooby Doo, He-Man, Thundercats and saw every Disney film and could write endless thesis on Scooby Doo's tremendous appetite, this book lacks substance.

2 out of 5 stars Typical "Mainstream" book........2006-08-08

This book is abit of a bore and turnoff with all it tips and trixs to create scripts that will please the "buyer". It is colored with a tone of a moral panic that is typical for experts that clame to know what people want and don't want. I think it is safe to say that if the creators of "South Park" or "The Simpson" would have read this book and followed it, thoose series would have never been made - maybe not even Bambi with its horrid shooting of bambis mother?

It also deals with animation at its simplest blocks, it tries to show the steps to a finished product - poorly. It does contain a good hint here and there but as a hole it is a complete waist of time, and a poor candidate for a book to understand the teqnical aspects of animation. If you have some basic knowleadge of character, animation and storyboarding and want to learn how to write for animation, buy books about writing instead.

5 out of 5 stars Animation Writing and Development : From Script Development .......2005-03-10

Jean Ann Wright's "Animation Writing and Development : From Script Development to Pitch", is a comprehensive and well written book, on the subject.

I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in writing for animation.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-03-07

Every industry has its own special requirements. This book "Animation Writing and Development" by Jean Ann Wright should be titled "A Manual for the Working World of Animation". There are not many books that give all the working aspects of a creative vocation. Wow! What to do, how to do it, and still nurture creative desires! Being a college art instructor, all my classes will know about the existence of this fine work. B. McInerney

There is a war being fought in our culture — a ware between two worldviews. One view is based on a biblical understanding of history, the other on pure naturalism. We witness the battles and skirmishes in our schools, our courts, and our homes. All around us are casualties of the warfare — Christians taken captive by an evolutionary philosophy. From science class to world history, for The Learning Channel to SpongeBob, subtle and not-so-subtle evolutionary messages bombard us. The idea of the big bang and millions of years has duped many Christians, and the effects include a weakened gospel and subjective morality. How are we to respond when we hear of the latest “argument” for evolution? How can we prepare our children to face the evolutionary indoctrination of our public schools and universities? What are we to make of “Christian” organizations that teach the big bang and millions of years? In this powerful new book from Answers in Genesis, you will find ammunition for the war: Answers to some of the most common arguments for evolution, analyses of Christian compromise positions and a call for a return to biblical authority.

What do aliens, dinosaurs and gay marriage have in common? Absolutely nothing at all - unless you're a member of the tinfoil-hat brigade on the lookout for black helicopters or SpongeBob SquarePants conspiracy theories and prefer a second Dark Age fueled by fundamentalist neo-medievalism to The Learning Channel.

The accidental comedians at Answers in Genesis (AiG) are back with a new book. All of the authors have signed a "Statement of Faith" that includes the following:

BASICS ARTICLE 3: "The account of origins presented in Genesis is a simple but factual presentation of actual events and therefore provides a reliable framework for scientific research into the question of the origin and history of life, mankind, the Earth and the universe."

GENERAL ARTICLE 6: "No apparent, perceived or claimed evidence in any field, including history and chronology, can be valid if it contradicts the Scriptural record."

Practically speaking this means: "We are absolutely certain that our preferred creation myth holds the ultimate answers to the question of life, the universe, and everything."

On how firm a foundation, indeed...

This tract invents an idyllic past that never existed, claims that modern society is corrupt, and blames a gentle naturalist named Charles Darwin (religious fanatics, not scientists, fly airlines into buildings and behead hostages, all in the name of God and his infallible book). It moves on to misrepresent scientific origins of life research. Lowlights include a caricature of information theory and the misapplication of the 2nd law of thermodynamics, along with feeble attempts to refute experimental results. Sophistry is then employed in an attempt to prove that all mutations are bad and only result in a loss of information. The facts and science argue otherwise. Finally the creationist arguments of personal incredulity (I can't possibly imagine how that happened, therefore it didn't) and low self-esteem (I didn't evolve because that would make me an animal) are merged into a mindless mélange.

"Biblically correct" astronomy and cosmology are covered next. Ignore every passage describing the Earth as flat, immovable, and the center of the universe. Forget the whole solid firmament thing and that stars are small nearby objects that can literally fall to Earth - but yes, the Earth is only 6,500 years old (plus or minus a few obscure genealogies). Fictional chronologies and flood geologies only look ridiculous, even in the context of the other arguments presented in this book.

Sectarian squabbles take over with a self-righteous rebuke of "progressive creationists" who question the six day creation hallucination dogma that AiG vacuously parrots. At least the progressives attempt to consider science and reason. Intelligent Design (ID) undergoes an inquisition that attempts to answer the vexed question "Is the Intelligent Design Movement Christian?" The Kitzmiller v. Dover decision settled this question - the answer is yes. This book answers no. So much for the facts and legal precedent. The Auto de Fe carnival then considers whether or not creationists can be "real" scientists. The correct answer is no; creationists can't be real scientists because they explicitly reject the scientific method which is based on methodological naturalism. No supernatural causalities need apply. To get around this difficulty AiG redefines science to demand divine intervention. In this alternate reality only Christians can be "scientists."

Absurdity triumphs when gay marriage is blamed on evolution. AiG also blames evolution for Poodles (I am not making this up). This organization clearly has serious issues - none of which are addressed when a "proof of creation" based on supposedly "inerrant" presuppositions is offered. They place the creation of the universe 2,500 years after the Babylonians and Sumerians learned how to brew beer. This is seriously inebriated inerrancy.

The conclusion is a shallow apologetic for AiG's catechism, which also happens to be the conceptual framework for AiG's "Creation Museum" floor plan. This monument to folly features, among other silliness, a dinosaur restoration complete with a saddle.

If you want to experience instant-onset Alzheimer's read this book. Just remember to back up your mind first!

                                            Book Description

From "The Next Generation" and "The X-Files" to "Farscape" and "Enterprise," science fiction television shows have millions of devoted fans. American Science Fiction TV is the first full-length study of this popular genre. Writing with the clarity of a scholar and the enthusiasm of a fan, Jan Johnson-Smith shows how science fiction television has displaced the Western in the American cultural imagination. As advances in special effects have made science fiction television technically feasible on a more lavish scale than ever before, visual style has become as important as narrative--sometimes even more important--in expressing the meaning of the genre. The main part of the book uses case studies of several key science fiction series, including "Space: Above and Beyond," "StarGate SG-1," and "Babylon 5," to exemplify particular narrative patterns and visual styles. The case studies explore themes such as politics, ideology, race and ethnicity, gender difference, militarism, and the use of science fiction narratives as allegories of present-day social and political concerns. American Science Fiction TV opens an important new area of genre studies and will be of interest to scholars and fans alike.

American Science Fiction TV: Star Trek, Stargate And Beyond by Jan Johnson-Smith (Senior Lecturer in Film and Television Theory, Bournemouth University Media School, United Kingdom) surveys the development of science fiction television over the last twenty years with a special focus on narrative, imagery, and ideology. The author makes some fascinating connections between the ancient tradition of the epic journey with the more recent American tradition of the "Wild West". The reader is shown how themes of journey and exploration, and the archetypal characters associated with these themes, have continued from ancient times to the modern era. Johnson-Smith utilizes case studies of several key science fiction series including "Babylon 5", "StarGate SG-1"; "Space: Above and Beyond", and others to reveal common narrative patterns and visual styles. These case studies explore diverse themes including politics, ideology, race and ethnicity, gender difference, militarism, and the use of science fiction narratives as allegories of present-day social and political issues. American Science Fiction TV will prove of immense interest to students of American Popular Culture, the history of American television programming, and fans of fantasy and science-fiction.

5 out of 5 stars evolving themes of TV science fiction.......2005-03-01

Johnson-Smith, a lecturer in film and TV at an English university, reaches the conclusion that unlike earlier periods of science fiction, "modern American sf fiction is neither utopian or dystopian...it enforces a critique of the Western mythos whilst renegotiating its finer aspects." This Western mythos centers on the desire for exploration. This desire was seen as far back as the Gilgamesh myth of the ancient Babylonians; and it emerged in American culture especially in Westward expansion and the related romance of the West. It entails a sense of wonder and the hope of encounter with the Sublime--elements undeniably evident in modern TV sci-fi, which are a major reason for their appeal. But imparting this sense of wonder and picturing the Sublime became possible only when TV technology improved from its first days. Only in recent years has TV arrived in an "era where far-seeing 'tele-vision' can finally live up to its name" by making use of "brilliant colors and dynamic motion" to enhance sf narratives. Today's TV science-fiction shows, notably "Star-Trek," are contrasted with earlier ones such as "Twilight Zone" creating an atmosphere mainly by suggestion, leaving much to the viewer's imagination. The author identifies a new era in science-fiction TV and analyzes the bases of its themes and popular appeal.
