Book Description
Barnett Newman (1905–1970), one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, has captivated critics, scholars, and the general public for decades. This highly anticipated catalogue raisonné presents Newman’s entire oeuvre—paintings, drawings, sculpture, graphics, an architectural model, lost and unfinished works, and ephemera—in one stunning and definitive volume. Featured elements include color reproductions of unparalleled quality; extensive provenance, exhibition, and publication histories; and a listing of the contents of the artist’s library at the time of his death.
In addition to the catalogue raisonné prepared by Heidi Colsman-Freyberger, the book offers revelatory essays on the artist, his career, and his working methods and features fascinating photographs of Newman, his studios, and his installations. Richard Shiff draws on new documentation to explain why Newman chose to create abstract art, how he achieved “fullness” in his paintings, and how his works exemplify the social functions of an artist. Carol C. Mancusi-Ungaro reveals extraordinary details about Newman’s studio practice and materials and techniques, information not available to the public before because Newman only allowed his wife to observe him at work. Mancusi-Ungaro also discusses the fate of works that were damaged while traveling to exhibitions or by vandals.
Produced and designed to the highest possible standards, this magnificent catalogue raisonné is a critical purchase for anyone interested in twentieth-century art.

What every catalogue raisonne should look like........2005-09-12
The most surprising thing about Newman's output is how non-prolific he was,118 works on canvas in 25 years.Every painting is reproduced in superb color. The only detriment is that half a dozen of his large horizontal paintings are spread across the centrespread, spoiling the composition.Using fold out pages would have been more useful. It also includes his drawings, graphics and sculpture, comprising of 329 works in all.No text accompanies the reproductions, letting the work stand on it's own.If you admire Newman's work, buy this magnificent book.It is one of finest catalogue raisonne ever produced.

Book Description
This entertaining (and thought-provoking) technical manual offers readers the lowdown on the scientifically advanced World War II aircraft from Ted Nomura's critically acclaimed alternate history series. The formidable flyers showcased in this volume include rocket fighters, flying saucers, the Tribflugel, and Amerika Bombers, among others.
Customer Reviews:
Not What I Expected.......2006-08-10
As someone who is endlessly fascinated by "secret" German World War II projects, technologies and weapons that may have changed the course of history if the Third Reich had pursued them more energetically, I had high hopes for this book. Having previously purchased several of David Myhra's books, such as "Sanger--Germany's Orbital Rocket Bomber of World War II" and "Secret Aircraft Designs of the Third Reich," I expected "Luftwaffe: 1946 Technical Manual" to be similar. I also expected it to at least vaguely resemble the excellent "Luft46" website, which features exquisite digital renderings of hundreds of unbuilt German World War II aircraft designs.
I was, however, disappointed.
"Luftwaffe: 1946 Technical Manual" is poorly organized, poorly written, filled with poor-quality graphics (white-on-black, many of them, and virtually unreadable) and technical errors. While it may resonate with a certain audience, if you are a serious student of history--even history that never happened--I'd recommend giving it a pass.
Much of the slim volume consists simply of tabulations of characteristics of various "secret" aircraft, with little or no explanation of their genesis, status or historical context. I was surprised to find that some of "Luftwaffe: 1946 Technical Manual" is a comic-book story about the "secret weapons" that it purports to describe. I am not averse to comics in general--the old "Sky Masters of the Space Force" strip is one of the things that inspired me to become an aerospace engineer--but I did not expect to find comics in this book. In fact, I have a sense that perhaps this volume is actually intended as a companion guide to a computer game. Again, "not that there's anything wrong with that," but you should be aware of what you will get if you are considering buying this book. If you are looking for a historically and technically accurate account of aircraft that Germany MIGHT have deployed had World War II continued into 1946, this book is not the place to find it.

Want to be a comedian?.......2007-04-22
Excellent looking book. Well organized information on the inside. Franklin Ajaye may not be a household name in stand up, but he's written a book that definitely makes him a household name in my life. I would one day like to make my living as a stand up comedian, and after much searching and perusing, I decided that out of the many books on stand up I would pick this one up first. The big selling point for me was all of the interviews. Once I saw all those names of comedians that I had watched for years I knew I had to read this book.
I have to say that this book was extremely encouraging. I consider myself a funny person, and judging by their reactions to me, I would say that my friends and coworkers think I'm funny as well. My big question was, "how do I turn being a funny person, which I think most people are, into a stand up career?" The first section of this book is a how to guide for doing exactly what I wanted to accomplish. I don't think an aspiring stand up could read this part of the book too much.
The interviews section contained the meat and potatoes that I was most looking forward too. I wasn't let down with any of these chapters, and Ajaye is a really good interviewer. The subjects of the interviews were a diverse group of stand ups and there is tons of methodical insight and stories from the road to be digested from each of them. Frequently, the comedian being interviewed will describe their style of writing and/or performing, and it will be a contrast to what Ajaye suggests beginners do in the beginning of this book. I like how this highlights that there is no formula for stand up, and it encourages one to be experimental and innovative in developing their own funny style.
The final section was also very helpful for someone in my position. It was a set of interviews with what I would call behind the scenes characters that are very important to a stand up comedian. What an entertaining read for aspiring comedians, people who want to be funnier, or just those who are fans of stand up comedy.
excellent book.......2007-03-20
excellent book, excellent interviews, very enjoyable read.
I liked Larry Wilde's book also. Each book covers different comedians, except Jerry Seinfeld who is in both I think.
I can't express how valuable these two books are to anyone who wants to do stand-up. It's just critically important. These interviews in these 2 books talk about all the hard questions that everyone has. Different styles of comedians, different perspectives. Helping you find out who YOU are. it's great. I really enjoyed this book a lot.
I want my money back!.......2006-11-21
This book was a disappointing waste of time and money. The author's introduction is a story of a man who was flunking out of law school. He speaks of his early failures in comedy and then says he eventually began to study comedians he liked. He writes of a very elementary analytical process he used to find what made each of his favorite comedians funny. The analysis is one anyone could easily put together and there is no need to buy this book for this insight. As the author continues, he gives advice on how to put together material. He tells us to work on timing and delivery and recommends studding your favorite comedians to best learn this aspect. All and all, there were fewer than 50 pages of the afore mentioned. After that, there are interviews with several comedians that although are interesting, do not provide much help in developing yourself as a comic. In short, if you're looking for a few short interviews with a few comics, you'll like this book. If you're looking for someone to help you learn to write your own stuff, the core of the few pages in this book is (1) Study your favorite comic (2) Tap into your own life experiences. (3) Use your "third eye" (whatever that means).....
A stand-up must.......2006-08-11
I am going to do stand-up, and this book showed me what and what not to do. It also brought to light many of the fears and problems that even the most successful comics face. They were the same problems that I have been concerned about, and I thought were faqmiliar only to me, and I now realize that just because I have these fears does not disqualify me from doing or wanting to do stand-up, but it shows me just how much I have in common with the successful comedians.
Perfect.......2006-07-22
All the right questions are asked and all the advice you want is given.

An updated and practical approach to research concepts, techniques, and sources from the 4th edition.
Book Description
Introduction by Greil Marcus. Preface by Patti Smith. Art Direction by Yolanda Cuomo. Be it in the Peruvian Andes, in Kentucky bluegrass country, in the Gospel churches of Brooklyn, or in Greenwich Village with Bob Dylan and the Beats, famed musician John Cohen's vision transcends history, even while it distills the spirit of a period and a place. There Is No Eye, Cohen's first monograph, is a guided tour through the worlds of outsider artists, poets, and musicians. Cohen's lyrical stories of the cultures he has encountered complement his photographs taken over the past five decades. Featuring never-before-seen photographs of legendary Beat generation icons, from literary lions Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Gregory Corso to artists and photographers Grace Hartigan, Franz Kline, Red Grooms, and Robert Frank, and a panoply of American Roots musicians, from Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, and Muddy Waters to Doc Watson, Elizabeth Cotton, and Roscoe Holcomb, There Is No Eye captures some of the most influential artists of our time.

I'm not neutral buy or steal or borrow this book NOW!.......2005-12-02
To really know John Cohen and really to know so much about USA culture from the late 1950s until today, but particularly the part that the cultural dissonent and culturally cool parts of the folk and old time revival, and politically as well, you
really need to read this book and see this book
I make no secret of the fact that he has been one of my heroes since I about 58 was about 14, that I have enjoyed his writing and recording, and that through the luck mutual friends, I have met him. I sent my first published book autographed to him more than 30 years ago. I been seated with him at weddings. I have thrived not only on his music but his wonderful photographs, and his great collection of both Andean and Appalachian music for decades. I've been thrilled to see him performing at Newport Folk Festivals, in folk clubs, in living rooms. I am not objectiove, JOHN COHEN IS MY HERO.
However, after forty some years of this, this book hit me and struck me hard, as an important statement about the whole history of USA culture from the 1950s on. After all, John Cohen along with Dave Van Ronk was one of the first persons to feel Bob Dylan was significant. In one of his wildest anti-everything periods, Dylan still wrote and said, "You are right John Cohen," for the sensitive interviews John made with him, for John's sensitive films and photographs sampled here, for introducing John to Allen Ginsburg and other leaders of the Beat art and poetry movement who John started among.
At the same time John was and is a great traditional folk music performer, one of the great members of the New Lost City Ramblers, as well as a player on his own independent CDS. More than that, he is a great collector of both Andean and Appalachian folk music. In this book most importantly for me, John;s photographs and commentary with his relationship with the great musicial genius Roscoe Holcomb of Kentucky, further explicated in his liner notes to his second CD of Holcomb's work "An Untamed Sense of Control" is worth the whole book.
Also you gain a lot of knowledge or better feel for John as an artist who knew the abstract expressionists and the photographers who parallelled them. This is a great book for anyone who remembers the original Cedar Tavern or even the later/current one. This is a great book for people who need to know and feel the way that art and music tried to bridge the gap between the plastic, commercial, prefabricated, cardborn cookie cutter, drek that the consumer society and Madison Avenue and the Brill building dish out, and the liberating spirit of humanity. Not bragadocio layered, sticking out their thumb at normal people, mud in your eye, adolescent rebellion garbage.
Read this, and you find hope, and maybe know how to build a life. At the wedding our John and my best friend, I gave the couple an album of photographs I had taken in Nevada, knowing John and my friend had just returned from a photographic tour in a small plane of the southwest, some of whose pictures are in the book. I also gave a joke biography of myself, entitled how I wanted to be the next John Cohen
Not a bad thing to be.

there is no question.......2002-11-15
I treated myself to this book for its relationship with and inclusion of many subjects of my interest: photography, folk & bluegrass music, roots culture, beat culture, NYC 60s art culture, & exotic travel. When I read the description here, I thought, "wow, this sounds like one hell of a great book, tailored to my passions." Well, it's better than that. John Cohen is one lucky guy to have witnessed & recorded all that's in this book. The text is adequately sparse (for a 200-page book), but well-written and provides just enough accompaniment for the fascinating photography reproduced here. Regardless the title, looking through John Cohen's eyes is an ecstatic experience, taking one away to seemingly faraway times and places, especially for someone who was born in the 1970s (me). There is a story within each image, and the large scale of the prints makes you want to crawl inside each one and figure out what's going on. It's an Italian-made book, which explains the high quality; and it's the best ($) I've spent since Dylan was last in town.

JUST A THOUGHT AND I'M STILL WAITING!.......2003-06-24
I have read the first book of the series and found it to be very interesting, especially since I know Ms. Higgins personally and I have been asking [online] at her e-mail address about the second book and have yet to get a response, I would really like to help support her/you and also to help and get others to support her/you as well, but without a response or any given information or a way to order even online-it becomes extremely hard, but first of all I would have to know if the second book is available for purchase, right? It makes me feel as if my support isn't needed or appreciated. From the bottom of my heart I wish Ms. Higgins nothing, but the best and also pray that the good Lord continues to Bless her and her talents.
