Book Description
Betye Saar, born in Los Angeles in 1926, emerged in the 1960s as a powerful figure in the redefinition of African American art. Over the past forty years, she has injected African American visual histories into mainstream visual culture by blending spiritual, political, and cultural iconography to create complex works with universal impact. This beautifully illustrated book accompanies an exhibition of Saar's work, showcasing the extraordinary depth and breadth of her achievement. It provides multiple vantage points from which to gain a richer understanding of Saar's career, American art of the 1960s, feminism, contemporary art, and California culture and politics.

A beautiful book.......2007-01-11
Extending the Frozen Moment is well-written, well-illustrated and an excellent overview of Betty Saar's work. Anyone interested in gender, Black history, racial politics, collective memory, collage, minority art, or autobiographical art work should find this book fascinating.

Book Description
To the time-honored myth of the artist creating works of genius in isolation, with nothing but inspiration to guide him, art historians have added the mitigating influences of critics, dealers, and the public. Bodies of Art completes the picture by adding the model. This lively look at atelier politics through the lens of literature focuses in particular on the female model, with special attention to her race, ethnicity, and class. The result is a suggestive account of the rise and fall of the female model in nineteenth-century realism, with a final emphasis on the passage of the model into photography at the turn of the century.
This history of the model begins in nineteenth-century Paris, where the artist–model dynamic was regularly debated by writers and where the most important categories of models appear to be Jewish, Italian, and Parisian women. Bodies of Art traces an evolution in the representation of this model in realist and naturalist literary works from her "birth" in Balzac to her "death" in Maupassant, in the process revealing how she played a key role in theories of representation advanced by writers. Throughout the book, Marie Lathers connects the artist's work to the social realities and actual bodies that surround and inhabit the atelier. Her work shows how much the status of the model can tell us about artistic practices during the century of the birth of modernity.

Customer Reviews:
Not all "improvements" are better!.......2007-09-20
This book is a classic. I and many colleagues have recommended "Where's Jess?" to families when young siblings survive an infant's death. How disappointed I was when my new copy arrived! I had ordered it for dear friends' preschool child when their chronically ill infant died. I had read our hospital's Family Resource Library copy to the surviving 5 year old who had been showing many of the classic signs of distress of young children with overwhelming grief. As soon as he heard the initial words his little body calmed, he became still and seemed centered. For the first time in days he engaged in reciprocal conversation, and was able to articulate feelings based on his responses to the illustrations. He spontaneously said that he wanted this book for his birthday.
I was taken back when I saw the smaller size and bright cheery colors of the cover and the condensed, crowded small pages of the new edition. I shared the new version with colleagues to see if they shared my disappointment (they did!).
When actually reading the new version of the book to the little boy: It was much harder to draw him in and he didn't interact easily with the illustrations. Additionally, this time, unlike last time, he made no attempt to read the words on his own. Although the text is the same, the presentation is sadly distracting.
I don't think crowding or liveliness are helpful for those with aching hearts and troubled thoughts. It is as if the book has lost its essence and synchronicity.
This is a great loss indeed, as I think the text and intent of the book remain outstanding, but the presentation seriously detracts.
Buy this wonderful book if you can in its older, brown and simple format.
very helpful resource even for miscarriage and death in general.......2006-02-04
My son is 3 1/2 years old and really could relate to this book. I liked this book because it was short enough to keep his attention, but answered many of his questions. I like its simple yet reassuring style.
Excellent Sibling loss Book.......2005-09-01
So often, children are overlooked when dealing with the loss of a sibling. They grieve, too, and need help understand the concept of death (especially since they will probably hear many euphemisms for death and get confused). This book is aimed at younger children, probably best for children age 7 or younger. I highly recommend it as an aid in helping a child grief losing a sibling.
Beyond Words.......1999-12-05
I was almost too young to understand my sister's early death. But I was not too young to understand this book and how it helped me. It is about the same situation I was in. A small boy's sibling dies and he notices she is gone. The parents tell him what death is about and how it is alright to remember and talk about Jess. I was only four and could not quite read, but my mom read me Where's Jess almost every night. This is a helpful book for children and parents.

Customer Reviews:
Not at all what I expected - very, very disappointed.......2004-12-04
I bought this cookbook thinking it was persian cooking. I certainly did not expect to see recipes for Italian dishes and dumbed down american dishes. I wouldn't even say these are recipes - things like dumping a can of cream of mushroom soup with other things is not cooking in my mind. This is neither persian cooking or american cooking - it's a disgrace to people who enjoy the art of either. I'm returning the book. I'd give this 0 stars, but unfortunately, Amazon doesn't have that option.
A feast for the eye and the mouth.......2001-01-03
I highly recommend this international cookbook whether you are a sophisticated cook or an enthusiastic beginner. I made the walnut and veal stew with the upside-down rice to complement my Christmas dinner. The golden crust of the rice was awesome. The star meringue made an impressive and easy dessert. I've made the salmon tart both as an appetizer and as a light lucheon meal. The step-by-step instructions make cooking simple. The end result for every recipe I tried was both a feast for the eye and the mouth.

Impressive and Inspiring .......2004-08-25
When you sit down and read a book, you think am I going to get something out of this? Is this worth my time? I can honestly say this book is worth the time! Paris writes through experience, and touches a place in my heart that makes you realize that your not the only one. It takes the ups and downs of life, and gives readers hope in what is to come in the future! Coming from a male prospective, I felt her struggles and joy. I hope you enjoy her book as much as I did.

Book Description
Combining a welath of sources--police reports, legal documents, court testimonies, and medical records, as well as literary texts and the very rare diaries of madams and prostitutes that have survived--and a passionate, flowing literary style, Adler tries to uncover the story of the women themselves, who are, after all, like all other women.

Book Description
It's samurai with a sense of style as the lushly illustrated, smartly designed Peacemaker saga rolls on. Look for more drama, more action, and more adventure in this hot new release of the winning franchise!
Customer Reviews:
Where is the 4th Book?.......2006-02-14
I'm really disappointed that it hasn't come out (just like everyone else) The series is WONDERFUL. I think it's really nice to see a samurai series written by a woman, and personally, I think all the deeper emotion insights is amazing beyond belief. Plus, who can say no to that artwork? It was the reason I picked it up in the first place!
But also in regards to the series in Japan, I looked at Anime News Network, and saw the release dates for the volumes in Japan. Vol. 1 to Vol. 2 was a 4 month gap, but Vol. 4 to Vol. 5 was a 13 month gap, Vol. 5 having come out in March of 2005. Has the series ended with 5 Manga? Or is it longer then that? Has Chrono started a new series? Or has she just lost the momentum for this series?
Still, the Manga is fantastic, please read Shinsengumi Immon Peace Maker before though, otherwise the story is really hard to make heads or tails of. You end up just kind of ignoring vital information because you hope it will be explained later on. (I know, because I found out only recently about Shinsengumi Immon Peace Maker)
So please, read it!
Is there Anyway we can ADV hear our concerns?.......2006-01-21
I've been a long time fan of the Peace Maker Series and I was looking forward to the release of the fourth book when I came back to America. Book Three left off at probably one of the most climatic moments I've seen an any manga I've ever read so I was extremely disappointed when the book never came out. I would love to know of a way for ADV to hear my and probably other people's complaints of not releasing the book. If anybody has any ideas post their comments for a review of this book
Great but probably not gonna get it.......2006-01-17
I agree with the other reviewers. I love the series Peacemaker and was looking forward to the release of the fourth book. But alas no such luck. I ended up canceling my order for the book I placed in September after 2-3 delays. For people thinking about buying the book and waiting the 4-6 weeks you should wait to see if the book will actually be produced (check the ADV website) or until reviewers say they got their book.
Went the way of "Tactics", the anime.......2006-01-03
I preordered vol. 4 of Peacemaker Kurogane about 6 months ago, still haven't got it (and received no delay notification from Amazon either). So I agree with the reviewer above that ADV most probably dropped the series halfway. Ah well, the tragedy in Peacemaker Kurogane doesn't hit as hard when you haven't read the previous series and learned to love the characters.
Be careful of ADV Manga.......2005-12-14
ADV Manga has been inconsistent with publishing licenses it obtains from Japan. They obtained the license for "Taimashin" a great 11 volume manga series. I bought Vol 1 and waited for Vol 2 with anticipation. The publish date came and went, and my order went from preorder to backordered. I searched Froogle in vain. Finally I found a posting on a Manga forum saying ADV Manga had quietly dropped Taimashin. Quiet indeed. Now I see the same thing happening with Peacemaker Kurogane. If you check, you will see that Amazon shows this title was published in Aug 2005. And now you will see that Amazon.com says it will "normally ship within 4 to 6 weeks". I am not holding my breath. This is exactly what ADV Manga did with Taimashin. I have written ADV Manga to express my concern. I have received no reply, and I still see no sign that Peacemaker Kurogane Vol 4 will actually be published. I encourage all fans of the series to write ADV Manga and express concern.
Book Description
From the first Academy Awards black-tie dinner dance in 1929 to the glittering Vanity Fair gala in 2004, from the 1940s gatherings at the most fashionable nightspots in Los Angeles–Ciro’s, Mocambo, Romanoff’s, Chasen’s–to the star-studded parties thrown by legendary agent Swifty Lazar from the 1960s to the 1990s, here is a photo history of all those events, presented by Graydon Carter and David Friend. More than five hundred archival and personal black-and-white and color photographs–many never seen before–have been collected in Oscar Night. There is an afterword by Dominick Dunne and a look at every detail, from menus to matchbooks to seating charts.
You’ll see intimate and unposed photographs of such classic icons as Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne, Gloria Swanson, David O. Selznick, and Alfred Hitchcock, among many others, at the formal dinners of the 1930s through the 1950s. Here also are amazing photographs of another generation of icons at the exclusive Governors Balls: Jack Nicholson, John Travolta, and John Belushi, Dennis Hopper with Michelle Phillips, and a very young Ali MacGraw dancing with Robert Evans. And here is a mix of New York and Hollywood at Swifty’s parties, with pictures of Bianca Jagger, Sam Shepard, Michael Caine, David Geffen, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the Ahmet Erteguns. Here, too, is the Hollywood that gathers today at the Vanity Fair Oscar party: Warren Beatty, Mick Jagger, Oprah Winfrey, Nicole Kidman, Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron, Sofia Coppola, Sigourney Weaver, Fran Lebowitz, Sean Combs, and Renée Zellweger.
Irresistibly sumptuous–and juicy–Oscar Night is a book full of elegance and egos, of glamorous pictures that you will want to look at again and again.

Oscar Night 75 Years of Parties.......2007-02-09
I have NOT received this item yet!! I can not believe the POOR shipping system of Amazon!!
Delightful.......2005-09-17
I work in "the business", and have been nominated myself for the great gold statue (Best Documentary, 1997). This is one of my faavorite books on Hollywood history. Not only does it show many of the great stars and movers-and-shakers of the different eras, but it shows them at their most relaxed, spontaneous andpersonal best. A very well designed and thoughfully annotated book- a deserved element for a lifeloing collection.
great book.......2005-02-24
man this was a good book. oscars rule. and Julia is the greatest star EVER!!!
A wonderful book.......2005-01-18
This is a beautiful coffee table book and any Oscar or film fan will love it. From the opening photo of producer Buddy Adler's Oscar sitting on the shelf of a hat rack at Romanoff's Restaurant to the final now famous photo of Faye Dunaway sitting by her pool the morning after she won her award, this is a very special book. It is filled of course with great photos of the winners themselves but also contains other interesting mementos, like ticket stubs, seating programs, invitations, dinner menus, sample ballots, telegrams, memos, etc. Also photos of Hollywood landmarks, like Ciro's, Ambassador Hotel, Biltmore Bowl, Beverly Hills Hilton and the Beverly Hills Hotel are included. Most of the early celebrity photos were taken at the banquets and formal dinner celebrations and it is funny seeing all these people smoking and surrounded by liquor bottles on the tables. The book is in chronological order and the photos near the end of the book (from previous years parties) are smaller but much more numerous. The captions that accompany the photos are fantastic - they are not mere snippets but interesting lengthy paragraphs full of fascinating information. Included throughout the book are sketches and essays written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and quotes from the columns of Louella Parsons and Hedda Harper. An afterword by Dominick Dunne and a list of winners, year-by-year compelte this fascinating book.

Great eye-candy.......2001-09-13
This book delivers just what its title would suggest... boys in their briefs surfing and hanging out at the beach. Cute, if immature, young men talk about the surf and what they like in a girl. Not exactly enthralling reading, but admit it, you didn't want this book for the plot!

Book Description
Although television drama has existed for more than half a century and is now, in terms of audience participation, the dominant form of theatre, "there is as yet hardly any serious criticism of drama on television." Martin Esslin's statement ten years ago still holds true. Seeing it as a challenge, Egil Törnqvist compares various Scandinavian and British TV versions of some of Ibsen's and Strindberg's best known plays.
By means of close readings of textual passages, followed by transcriptions and analyses of the corresponding passages in the productions, Törnqvist throws a revealing light on the difference between the textual and the audiovisual medium as well as between various directorial approaches. The first book to deal with the adaptation of stage drama to the small screen, it fills a gap both for students of drama and theatre and for those generally interested in television drama as an art form.
