understandable to all.......2007-03-09
What blows my mind about Gauss's Disquisitiones is that it is understandable to people like me who don't have an advanced background in mathematics. You just need to move through it slowly and carefully. There is a certain joy that comes along with making the discoveries that Gauss walks you through. A book that will change your outlook on life by enhancing what you see as the basic philosophy underlying numbers and mathematics. Mathemtical magicians like Euler and Lagrange will just confuse and dazzle you with their tricks, but Gauss will give you understanding.
Martin Christensen"s Review.......2007-01-08
This book is very good, but not quite excellent. Gauss spent, in my opinion, too much time on the theory of binary forms and too little on the general second-degree equation in two variables that the theory is such a big part of. However, the rest of the book was first-rate, well suited to one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. I considered it money well spent.
Choose your edition carefully.......2006-03-08
This is a great book. It's the place where modern number theory begins. It's also well enough written that it's enjoyable to read today.
There are two editions and you have to choose carefully. I don't know whether my review will appear on both editions or just one. The softcover is only $47. The hardcover is $129, but it is a REVISED translation. A single person, who does not seem to be have been a mathematician, made the first translation from Latin in 1965. That was revised by a team of 4 scholars in 1986.
That turns out to be important, because the original translator got a few things wrong, like the logic of a double negative. So there are some places where the first (cheaper, softcover, Yale) edition is either wrong or unclear. Many of these problems have been fixed in the second (more expensive, hardcover, Springer-Verlag) edition.
I bought the first edition and I have no regrets, but you will get extra value for your extra money if you buy the second edition.
Not bad for 204 years old........2005-07-10
Gauss wrote Disquisitiones between 1795 and 1801. If I can read and understand Clarke's translation in less time than it took Gauss to write the original, I will be doing well. The mathematics has not been superseded and the historical aspect is extremely valuable.

It is the best book for people who takes mathematics seriously

Exposed: The Victorian Nude
ASIN: 0714845183 |
Book Description
John William Waterhouse is among the most popular Victorian artists, and many of his paintings, such as The Lady of Shalott, Hylas and the Nymphs and Ophelia, have become icons of femininity recognized the world over. With their compelling composition, glowing colour and Impressionist-inflected technique, these paintings are admired for their beauty, yet at the same time they have the power to transport the viewer into a romantic world of myth and legend.
Waterhouse's depictions of female beauty reflect his age's complex and ambivalent attitudes towards women, in which Victorian ideals of sentiment and duty commingled with less noble undercurrents of erotic desire and misogyny. In this fresh and innovative study of the artist, Peter Trippi presents a new analysis of Waterhouse's seductresses, martyrs and nymphs, together with a lively discussion of the cultural and historical circumstances in which these images were painted.
This authoritative volume utilizes new research to provide an accessible biography of the artist and to assess his place in the late Victorian art world. Themes explored include Waterhouse's passion for Italy, literature and the classical world, his participation in England's Royal Academy, his stylistic influences and studio practices, and the collectors, dealers, critics and curators who helped make him famous in his day.
Like other Victorian artists, Waterhouse was neglected through much of the twentieth century, but as critical inhibitions have fallen away the revival of his fortune has been dramatic. Today he is again acknowledged as a master painter. Peter Trippi's monograph provides a timely re-evaluation that combines a close reading of Waterhouse's imagery with a candid appraisal of his unique talent.
Customer Reviews:
The best book out there on J.W. Waterhouse! .......2007-08-05
This is the best book I have found on J.W. Waterhouse. Not only does this book talk about the painter's life, but more importantly, each of J.W .Waterhouse's paintings are described in very full detail (eg: OPHELIA).
I was so intrigued by reading about Waterhouses' pictures, because the author of this wonderful book (ie: PETER TRIPPI) elaborated in great detail about each work of Art, by contrasting and comparing Waterhouses' paintings to other famous paintings and sculptures (eg: Bourne Jones from the 1800's, and also many famous Italian 1400-th Century Artists) .
The author has attempted, (& with great success, I may add), to show how Waterhouse was influenced by past Rapheaelite Artists and also by some of the other famous first-phase Pre-Raheaelite English Artists.
Each synopsis, of each Waterhouse painting is quite amazing and like no other interpretation that I have read on this famous late-Pre-Raphaelite Artist.
The repro-photos of Waterhouse's works are amazing, -----showing such wonderful details and colors.
Book on John Waterhouse.......2007-05-17
If you are an art lover of paintings that can take your breath away, and pulling you int it than John Waterhouse is a must for your collection. He is such a great artist and this book is so incredible you want to devour it. He is one of the greatest artists of his time that I would recommend this book because it is affordable and wonderful.
I received this book quickly and with no delays.
Great table book.......2007-02-16
Would love to have ordered the hardcover for a coffee table book but this one does just fine for the cost and over-seas shipping it would have taken for the hardcover. Lots of information on J W Waterhouse and great pictures. It even has some of his less known works and pictures that you can't find prints for. A true keep sake and treasure for those who are interested in this artist and his time. Oh, and a few of the house guests, students, have even asked to borrow the book. First table book to have created some interesting conversations.
An astute feel for a quiet man.......2006-12-08
Peter Trippi's monograph has done what I would assume had to be very difficult to do: he has a good feel for the quiet, quiet man behind the paintings. The depth of his study helped me to verify a number of pieces of information that led me into my own research, and has continued to be my main reference as I continue my work. I recommend that this is the book to begin with if you are going to enter any serious study of John William Waterhouse; however, don't let that make you think it is only a scholar's read: it is well written, beautifully illustrated, and simply a joy to behold.
Wealth of information.......2006-11-01
This is the most complete book on Waterhouse I've come across yet. When researching this artist, I was surprised to find that there were very few books written just about Waterhouse. Without this book, it would have been very hard to research him at all.
The book is laid out beautifully so that even if you never read the whole thing, you can enjoy it. The paintings are displayed in full color and many of them cover a whole page. Sketches and other art by Waterhouse's contemporaries as well as art that he was inspired by are also included.
The book is laid out like an illustrated biography. Starting from birth to death, Trippi shows Waterhouse's life by his paintings and sketches since very few written documents of his life survive. Each chapter shows an era in his life and how he changed over the years by style and technique. Trippi explains much of the background of the paintings and mentions artwork still missing as well as other mysteries of Waterhouse's life. This is skillfully told including all the elements you want when getting to know an artist; his life, color pictures, inspirations, contemporaries, techniques and more.
I loved reading through this and at the end felt a heightened respect for the artist. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to know more about Waterhouse.

But then I am Biased.......2006-06-30
Anthony Hobson was my father and I watched as he researched, visited, photographed, wrote and re-wrote the text for this book. It was a labour of love, bringing to the fore an artist who had been deeply unfashionable for many years - out of step with the tastes of the intervening times.
His writing style was characterised by a passionionate, often wryly humourous but always very readable style.
His research discovered and brought to the public eye, paintings that hadn't been seen for a generation, paintings found in lofts and attics, and in private family collections. He met an elderly lady who had sat for Waterhouse when she was a child and recorded her memories of this event in her young life.
Along side the personal aspect of the work runs the academic thread of rigorous research into the literary themes that underpin so much of Waterhouses paintings, and the placing of all of this in context with other artists of the period and before.
My father fell in love with the sumptuous beauty and incredible technical skill of Waterhouses work. He was very aware of the power of images and spent a great deal of time working on the reproductions included in the book. What you have to realise is that this was the best that could be done at the time. Colour printing has moved on enormously since this book was published. The costs and quality are at vastly different levels to those available to authors today. He would be the first one to say that ANY black and white reproduction of this artists work could never remotely do them justice, but he worked with what was do-able and in giving a glimpse of long unappreciated paintings, he was able to start an army of fans on their way to a well-deserved re-assessment of Waterhouse.
A brief introduction to the artist.......2006-05-29
If you're looking for a brief intro into who Waterhouse was and his paintings, then this book is for you. If however, you want to see his paintings in color and larger sizes, then do not get this book. This book is an overview of Waterhouse's life and paintings, not the complete story. For the complete story and paintings, buy Trippi's book instead.
The text is laid out well and in sequence of Waterhouse's life. I found myself compelled to read the entire book in a short time.
There are some color pictures, but they are not as vibrant as the Trippi book. Many of the pictures are black and white and some are quite small, fitting into the margins. It was frustrating to see the b&W pictures and to try to imagine what they were really supposed to look like. But if all you want is an overview and a sampling of Waterhouse's art, then this book may be more manageable than Trippi's.
Don't get this one for the reproductions.......2004-03-12
I think I made a mistake when ordering and accidentally got this book instead of Trippi's hardcover. The narrative is interesting and insightful, but the reproductions are an outrage. Black and white for Circe Ividiosa and for (gasp) THE MAGIC CIRCLE??? Come on! Black and white should only be used to make a point about light and shade or for lesser works and studies. But there are several masterworks reproduced in B/W in this book. Also, the color reproductions are lousy as well. 3 stars overall out of respect for the author, but 1 star for the plates.
A well written introduction to Waterhouse.......2001-06-18
I find Waterhouse the greatest of the late 19th-century British painters. His women are full of life. He was a master at capturing the slightest expression to convey the personalities of his models. His compositions are superb. Paintings such as the 1888 "The Lady of Shalott" and the 1894 treatment of the same subject are as powerful as they are beautiful.
Hobson makes his admiration of Waterhouse's paintings obvious. This makes the book a very enjoyable read. It is a wonderful introduction to Waterhouse's work. Hobson spends a lot of time discussing paintings--this is something that is too often forgotten in art history texts. He identifies aspects of Waterhouse's compositions that help make his paintings outstanding. He describes the literary sources of Waterhouse's subjects. He mentions the artists who influenced Waterhouse's style. The essays are clear and well-organized. Anyone who is interested in Waterhouse's work should read this book.
Waterhouse: An Artist's Artist.......2000-07-14
During my education and professional life as an artist and professor of art the work of the Pre-Raphaelites and their contemporaries especially Waterhouse was/is extremely appealing and inspirational to me and many of my peers who are painters or illustrators. His work is among the best of his and any era since. The lavish reproductions in this book do homage to the wonderful God-given ability of the artist. Waterhouse's nymphs, faeries and women are innocent, gorgeous, and fetching, his colors deep, dark and lush, his men heroic and altruistic. If you love PreRaphaelite era art, Romanticism, mythical stories skillfully representated in figure art, this is the book for you. Though I bought the book for the reproductions, I recently read the text and found it helpful.

A selection of 16 beautiful greeting cards featuring some of the world's best-loved and most iconic Victorian paintings
Customer Reviews:
Lovely.......2007-09-04
These cards are quite lovely. Each picture is framed in a white border. The back & inside of the cards are also white. The title of the painting is printed on the back along with the year it was originally released. There are 16 cards in the set, each featuring a different painting: Tristram & Isolde, A Naiad, Ophelia (1889), Miranda-The Tempest, Thisbe, The Siren, Hylas And The Nymphs, The Shrine, The Lady Of Shalott (1888), Saint Cecilia, The Awakening Of Adonis, 'Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May,' Ophelia (1894), The Lady Of Shalott (1894), 'I Am Half Sick Of Shadows,' Said The Lady Of Shalott, Echo & Narcissus
The cards come with white envelopes in a very nice box that features the painting of Ophelia.
My only problem with the set is that there is only one of each painting. I would like to have had multiples of each, so that I could use one to write a letter on and save the other for framing or something.
Excellent quality, pictures not what I was expecting.......2006-02-25
These are great quality cards and excellent reproductions of the Waterhouse works. unfortunately, I was hoping for more works in a "romantic" (in the colloqial sense) vein, rather than the mythic ones chosen. There are several Waterhouse works that I would consider appropriate for correspondence to your signifgant other, but most of the tragic myths here (Narcissus, Lady of Shallot, etc.) aren't really those.
The crads themselves are great quality, though. Just be sure what you're looking for.

Oink: Heaven's Butcher is somehow both a sick continuation of an Orwellian fantasy and an inversion of Planet of the Apes, except with pigs. How so? In a dark, oppressive future society where concepts such as "day" and "month" have been long forgotten, the church-turned-state has decided to secretly breed humans with pigs to form a slave society. When one of the pig slaves realizes that the dogma being forced on them is all lies, he undertakes a path of revenge and revelation. Every page of Oink: Heaven's Butcher is painted in full color in a style reminiscent of John Bolton and Simon Bisely. John Mueller has an interesting take on a fairly standard allegory, and the last three pages are so good that they bring the story up a notch.

Orwell in the house.......2001-06-15
If you ever read books by Orwell and liked it/them, you're sure gonna like this. I would never call it a "book made into comic" but lets just say that it's a bit of a cross between Orwells '1984' and 'Animal Farm'. If you have never read any of those books it's no problem either because than you're still in for a great story, a modern staire on humanity. The main story is basically '1984' with a new jacket, where the characters are portrayed as animals (like in 'Animal Farm'). Same as with "Maus" the characters used here are symbolic. Where in Maus the Germans are portrayed as cats and the Jews as mice, here the oppressors (governments) are humans and the slaves are human/pig-crossings (which is also a great satire on humankind). When one day one of the slaves decides to stop doing exactly as he is told all Hell breaks loose when he discovers more and more how he's been lied to all his life and what the REAL world looks like. In addition to the story there is some great art in here. The whole thing is fully painted by John Mueller, also the writer, whose art reminds me a lot of Simon Bisley. And that's a good thing.

Love &Sadness all in one.......2007-09-16
It must be so hard for some of the offspring of Stars to front their demons. I do believe these two stars loved greatly but coming from different backgrounds was always going to be difficult.Their working days were completely opposite which had to cause friction. However I have passed this book around for others to enjoy. Unfortunately Sandra's addiction to alcohol would have been difficult for Bobby as he did not like this scene. His problems lay elsewhere. Nonetheless two great talents produced a loving son. Great read.
Loved this bio- very well written.......2007-08-01
This book is a touching recollection of the glorious, yet shattered lives of Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin, the Dream Lovers of the title who were entertainment superstars during the late 50s and 60s. Their son Dodd along with his co-writer Maxine Paetro did a terrific job in telling his family's heartbreaking story by getting input from many of the people closest to his parents. I would also recommend picking up the DVD of Bobby's last TV show in 73 "Mack is Back" along with reading Dream Lovers. They go well together.
Good read.......2007-07-29
I read this book cover to cover in a day. From a son's perspective, it was hard to see the progressive decline in his parent's lives through his eyes. Still, I believe it was told with as much objectivity as he could muster. I'm still fascinated with the Darrin/Dee relationship after all these years.
A sad and truthful story written by a beloved son.......2007-07-03
I fill Dodd Darin wrote a very tragic and truthful story of both of his parents. I felt he captured their inner feelings of joy and of heartbreak. He also showed his love for both. I have and would recommend this book to others
Dream Lovers.......2007-02-07
Loved this book. It will make for another interesting movie about these two lovers whom after they met were forever joined together solidified even more by their son. Tragic love story and had it not been for Bobby's short time on earth I am sure they would have worked it out and stayed together forever.
I cannot help but feel for Dodd who somehow hoped that his parents could have worked it out. As the son of two wonderful icons, he showed us the turmoil in their lives.
I thank Dodd for sharing his pain as well as his happy times with his parents though short lived.

The best of the Darin bios.......2006-01-06
Of all the Darin bios this one is my favorite. Darin and Dee's son Dodd, along with his collaborator, did a lot right and really fleshed out both people so that I felt like I had some idea what they were like. I also felt like I got to know Dodd, and he's a man any two parents would be proud of. He was brave and honest in his portrayal of his parents, and in approaching some estranged relatives and friends for their input.
My only regret is that Dee had the advantage of going through the book and requesting changes because she felt it was too hard on her. These changes were then made in accordance with her wishes. Darin had no such editorial advantage since he was long dead when it was written. So it feels like Dodd's bending over backward (tho' understandably given that his mom's feelings were at stake) to be accomodating to Dee, while (also understandably) unable to do the same for Bobby.
But a great dual bio of two fascinating and appealing stars: one damaged physically and doomed to a short life, and one damaged emotionally and unable to enjoy her longer life.
I've never ached so much for people I'll never know.......1999-01-02
The recent PBS documentary ("Bobby Darin-Beyond the Song") caught my attention and really grabbed me. I grew up in the 60's but had never paid much attention to music- and even hated some of the songs he sang. But even as I hated the songs I became mesmerized watching him. So I bought this little book and couldn't put it down. The authors start at the very beginning of Darin's and Dee's lives, making me feel like I was living each heart-breaking day and year with them. And watching Darin's life as it slowly unfolded made me slowly realize what a total genius he was, and made me realize how UTTERLY ORDINARY I am! How does one person become so completely talented that it is nothing short of frightening, and I exhibit not the slightest bit of creativity! So dramatic and yet too routine for a TV soap opera, it is heart-wrenching that Darin idolized but never saw the man he thought was his father, and found out very late in his too short life that his "sister" was actually his mother, his "mother" was actually his grandmother, and his "father" was not his father. He died only suspecting who his father actually was but never really knowing. But more upsetting to me is that in the United States in the 1970's no one could save this man's life when surely he could have been easily saved. He suffered physical pain that the book had me believing I was experiencing, and worst of all: he suffered alone. Everyone- including doctors who should have known better- told him there was nothing wrong with him. His physical ailments naturally made him difficult to be with and even those closest to him were driven away. This "brash," "cocky" man who gave us so much talent and enjoyment and ways to escape our troubles lived his last years terrified and feeling very much alone. What was also striking about this is that he had life-long friends who were more passionately in love with him than they were with almost anyone else- even when they were "on the outs" with him (How many of us have friends who would cry when speaking about us twenty years after our deaths?). But ultimately for various reasons, few of them were there for him. This magnificient talent who had everything- wealth, fame, the adulation of friends and strangers, genius, entourages- truly died alone and terrified- the same way we "ordinary" people fear passing.
This book left me more sad for and more concerned about strangers than I usually am for people I know, but it also left me truly heartened that the subjects' son seems to be doing so well and is so happy. His father would be as proud of him as he is of his parents, and his mother should rest assured that he will continue caring for her. He seems to be the type of son that should not only make a mother proud of him, but of herself- despite the low self-esteem she seems to have, she clearly did something very right when she raised him.
For an in-depth review, THIS IS DARIN AND DEE!!.......1998-01-08
For anyone interested in the lives of America's dream couple, this is the definitive collection. From Dees troubled childhood, her early rise to fame, a practicly unknown side of Darin as well as Dee through thier marriage, to Dees collapse and hints of a comback. The only thing left out is Dees recounts of the end of the marriage other then a brief "why" it happened. Darin's life is presented here in the most concentrated, interview-laden publication. Every aspect of his career and life are exhamined with a much-due artist respect tone. The plus here is a section of "what if's" are explored. The structure of the book is a new approach with chapters vollying back and forth in chronoligical order. An interesting ending with Dodd Darin's own little life dramas being raised a Hollywood teen. For Dee fans, this shows the price of fame. For us Darin fanatics, this shows the "why" of fame. Why do they do it? A must have for 50's/60's fans, Darin/Dee fans, biography fans, music fans, or anyone who's looking to open a new door.
Book Description
Ancient Greek music and music theory has fascinated scholars for centuries not only because of its intrinsic interest as a part of ancient Greek culture but also because the Greeks’ grand concept of music has continued to stimulate musical imaginations to the present day. Unlike earlier treatments of the subject, Apollo’s Lyre is aimed principally at the reader interested in the musical typologies, the musical instruments, and especially the historical development of music theory and its transmission through the Middle Ages.
The basic method and scope of the study are set out in a preliminary chapter, followed by two chapters concentrating on the role of music in Greek society, musical typology, organology, and performance practice. The next chapters are devoted to the music theory itself, as it developed in three stages: in the treatises of Aristoxenus and the Sectio canonis; during the period of revival in the second century C.E.; and in late antiquity. Each theorist and treatise is considered separately but always within the context of the emerging traditions. The theory provides a remarkably complete and coherent system for explaining and analyzing musical phenomena, and a great deal of its conceptual framework, as well as much of its terminology, was borrowed and adapted by medieval Latin, Byzantine, and Arabic music theorists, a legacy reviewed in the final chapter. Transcriptions and analyses of some of the more complete pieces of Greek music preserved on papyrus or stone, or in manuscript, are integrated with a consideration of the musicopoetic types themselves. The book concludes with a comprehensive bibliography for the field, updating and expanding the author’s earlier Bibliography of Sources for the Study of Ancient Greek Music.

Customer Reviews:
coverage of different communications technologies.......2000-10-01
This book comes as a handy reference when you need to look up stuff quickly. For instance if you want to check out K1 K2 bytes in a SONET frame and what they do, you can easily find it in this book. In a similar way it covers a broad range of topics, such as ATM, Frame Relay, SONET/SDH, digital hierarchy, xDSL etc.
Its not a definative guide since it does not cover any theoretical aspects of the technologies but still a good everyday reference with tons of pages.
Look no further.......1999-11-18
I spent the likes of three days trying to find a book that had a realistic application towards ATM and SONET/SDH technology. Practically by mistake I got lucky and found this one, (via the local bookstore). Not to say that others don't share the same depth, it's just that this one has a format that flows very nicely and is very well organized in thought and technolgy. It also seems to have the best collection of graphics, especially for understanding the bigger picture of device connectivity. It also provides a great history as to how the industry and need for this technology evolved, making it an ideal book for sales and marketing personnel. However, the author describes it as a post-graduate level book. So it is very specific, but its very easy to understand and flows in a logical manner. I can't imagine you would be disappointed. Feel free to write me if you have specific questions about this book.
