Great way to challenge child's mind!.......2001-08-30
I think Marks books are wonderful, hands down! My daughter did the Draw Squad book when she was 10 and now she's 14 and draws like a pro. She gets better every day, thanks to these books!
Draw, Draw, Draw!.......2000-05-19
Mark Kistler has created a series of drawing books, videos and T.V. shows that teach and encourage children to draw in 3-D. His Draw Squad and Imagination Station books are full of fun, interesting and challenging drawing lessons. In this book, 'Mark Kistler's Drawing In 3-D Wacky Workbook', he provides a convenient and easy way to practice drawing and keep a drawing journal. The lessons in this book accompany another book, 'Drawing in 3-D with Mark Kistler.' This workbook provides space to practice the lessons found in the drawing book. I found the book to be a good way to encourage daily drawing practice. The lessons are compelling enough to keep children motivated. The characters are fun and friendly, and still challenging enough to keep children stretching in their artistic endeavors. The only downfall of this workbook is that it is directly dependent on the 'Drawing In 3-D' book and does not stand well on its own. Otherwise, as a practice and art journalling tool, it is helpful. I recommend this and all of Mark Kistler's books to teach children about art concepts and how to draw, draw, draw in 3-D.

Mark Kistler's Drawing In 3-D Wacky Workbook.......2000-05-18
Mark Kistler has created fun, exciting, and challenging drawing lessons in his Draw Squad and Imagination Station books. Using a few simple rules, he teaches how to draw 3-D scenes, objects and characters. This book, "Drawing In 3-D Wacky Workbook", is a companion to Mark Kistler's "Drawing In 3-D." When used with "Drawing In 3-D", the Wacky Workbook becomes a place to practice the skills and characters taught. I like the fresh, fun drawings he teaches. When used thoughtfully, the book becomes an art journal, showing how you are improving as you go through the book. The skills learned can be applied in many and various ways. The only objection I would have is that it does not stand well on its own, but depends on the "Drawing In 3-D" book for it to make sense. Otherwise, it is a fine tool to help children practice their drawing and record their progress.
Book Description
Of the many practitioners of art nouveau in Great Britain, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) has outlasted them all. His work bridged the more ornate style of the later nineteenth century and the forms of international modernism that followed. Like Frank Lloyd Wright, with whom he is frequently compared, Mackintosh is known for so thoroughly integrating art and decoration that the two became inseparable. His work has been honored by a major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and his designs have proliferated to such an extent that they can be found reproduced in posters, prints, jewelry, and even new buildings. His most important project was the Glasgow School of Art, which still functions as a highly prestigious art school. This glorious building is visited each year by thousands of tourists from around the world. Built over a dozen years, beginning in 1897, the Glasgow School of Art is Mackintosh's greatest and most influential legacy.
This completely redesigned and lavishly illustrated edition of Mackintosh's Masterwork has been greatly expanded and contains newly discovered material about both the early life of the architect and the formative years in which his plans for the School of Art were executed.
Book Description
Now available in a paperback edition, this beautifully illustrated volume remains the first comprehensive work to examine turn-of-the-century architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh's crowning achievement--the Glasgow School of Art. Meticulously compiled by fine-art and architecture staff members of the Glasgow School, the book includes 200 color and black-and-white photographs documenting the landmark building's innovative structure and decoration, including the remarkable furniture Mackintosh designed specifically for the interior. Seven essays by some of the world's foremost architectural historians complete this exceptional volume. Architects and designers, as well as the ever-growing audience for the Arts and Crafts movement, will find this both an invaluable guide and a stunning tribute to an extraordinary artist.

Book Description
True story: in 1899, Mark Twain and Nikola Tesla decided to end war forever. With Twain's connections and Tesla's inventions, they went into business selling world peace. So, what happened? Only now can the tale be told - in which Twain and Tesla collided with Edison and Morgan, an evil science cabal merging the Black Arts and the Industrial Age. Turn of the century New York City sets the stage for a titanic battle over the very fate of mankind.
Customer Reviews:
Neat Concept, Poorly Executed.......2007-08-14
The similarities to "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" begin and end with the historical fiction concept. There are only so many ideas out there, and they're frequently recycled (especially in comics)--what counts is execution. Unfortunately, that's where this book underperforms.
While I'm a fan of Matt Fraction's "Punisher" and "Iron Fist" works for Marvel, his storytelling in this early graphic novel is frequently confusing. Perhaps it's the artwork by Steven Sanders that doesn't quite work? Beginning with the first page, it's difficult to tell what exactly is going on in the panels.
Great take on a historical rivalry!.......2007-03-30
It's a thoroughly enjoyable read that plays up some of Tesla's biggest quirks (being OCD and a ladies man) and a fun take on his rival/nemesis Edison.
Awesome.......2007-03-24
So, first do not be fooled. This graphic novel, is not about 5 famous scientists. It is about the amazing Nikola Tesla, and his good friend Sam Clemens, otherwise know as Mark Twain and there battle to make a buck with the most devastating and amazing invention in Tesla's arsenal. A great Saturday afternoon read! A+
Twain and Tesla Save The World.......2007-02-07
Mark Twain is financially embarrassed and living in Europe. He returns to the states to meet up with Nicola Tesla whose fortunes are currently doing well. Twain has an idea to use one of Tesla's inventions to bring peace to the world. Opposing Tesla are Edison and Marconi. They are backed by J.P. Morgan. But Twain believes that with the right amount of showmanship Tesla's invention can be sold to the great powers and once done no one will dare to make war again.
But things do not go as planned. Morgan and his team have other ideas. They are involved in some very dark practices and want to put a stop to Tesla and Twain. The world leaders are also not convinced the device is worth the cost being asked. The device winds up in the wrong hands and the fate of the world is at stake as Morgan's plans reach fruition. Only Twain, Tesla and a minor Royal will be able to save the world. To do so they will have to reveal the true nature of Tesla's device.
Yes, this story deals with real historical figures and they are portrayed in ways other than history remembers them. Before the story starts there is a list of players and it explains what changes have been made to the characters. So with the story covered it proceeds in the fine tradition of the Golden Age. We have Golden Age heroes, penny dreadful villains, and plenty of action to keep the reader going. The art is quite well done and the story hints at a much larger alternate history. I doubt we will see a sequel but there is plenty of room for backstory. If you like grand adventure then this is one to look for. Check it out.
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, redux (re-read 6/10).......2007-01-09
Obviously this books bites off of the League concepts quite thoroughly. But instead of clever dialogue, they susbsitute action hero mechanics with historical names (Thomas Edison, Sameul Clemons). Meaning, they take a standard super-hero story, and drop some old names in it. This book could have been much better if they would have utilized the nuances of the characters more. Instead, those geniuses of years past are given nothing to work with, and their uniqenesses are wasted as serial villians or heroes. Barnum! is an almost identical read.
Re-readability: 6/10
*I always put re-readability in my reviews for people who like to keep their TPB to re-read*

Customer Reviews:
I've reviewed the hardcover.......2005-07-07
FYI, I mistakenly reviewed the hardcover rather than the softcover edition of Rushton's fine book. Please look for that review if you are interested in this smart, gracefully written, thorough introduction to classical music from the Baroque through to Romanticism.
Customer Reviews:
Solid book for the beginner.......2005-07-07
This fine book provides a concise history of classical music from about 1750 to 1830. This is 'only' a century but this period contains both the Baroque and Romanticism. The book is pitched at the beginner, which suited me (not a rank novice but by no means an expert). Rushton writes clearly, eschewing the language of the specialist. He explains things like 'sonata' and 'symphony', but he does so while also covering a lot of ground. E.g., opening the book at random, I found references to Goethe, D'Alembert, Rousseau, and Schopenhauer, though I should make it clear that the intellectual and cultural history is secondary to the discussion of the music (its provenance, material production, genre, form, style, and spread and influence; he also pays attention to the recital halls) Opera is not omitted.
There are illustrations that are most useful. For example, on one page there are pictures of three kinds of early piano, so the reader can see not only the fortepiano of Mozart's era, but also the physical differences between pianos.
I should think that this book ought to be reprinted by Thames and Hudson, and perhaps put into softcover (if it wasn't originally). Rushton is eloquent, learned and interesting. I should add that he doesn't fail to discuss the so called musical unknowns, even as he also, understandably, focuses on the great names (Mozart, Gluck, Haydn and Beethoven). I was pleased to find it in a used bookstore.
