Customer Reviews:
LEARN FROM A LIVING MASTER!!!!.......2003-08-27
THIS BOOK IS MOST EXCELLENT ESPECIALLY IF USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH ANTHONY RYDER'S BOOK. I'VE BEEN DRAWING ALL MY LIFE, AND NOW I FEEL I'VE JUST BEGUN MY JOURNEY TO BECOME AN EXCELLENT DRAUGHTSMAN!!! BRAVO, TED! BRAVO, TONY!
You need this book.......2003-06-15
If you were stripped of every luxury of life, and had to exile yourself to an abandoned island with only the essentials for human existence, you'd think of things like food, water, and shelter. Likewise, if I ever had to get rid of every book in my how-to art library except for the ones that I would absolutely shrivel up and blow away without, this book would remain on my shelf along with Richard Schmid's "Alla Prima" and "Life Drawing in Charcoal" by Douglas Graves. These three are my food, water and shelter for surviving as a serious art student.
This book puts a greater emphasis on the artist's focus and state of mind than it does on technique.. Sound a little "Zen-like?" It is, in a lot of ways, but "you will draw what the mind sees" until you learn to draw what the eye sees. "The problem," Jacobs writes, "is not that we don't see well enough but that we do not draw what we see. We draw what we think." This is coming from a man whose drawings look like the masterpieces of da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Better listen to him.
While developing your mental-visual muscles, Jacobs goes into symmetry, balance, and light. But only after opening your eyes to what you see before you so your art won't be contaminated from an image file in your brain.
Each topic is broken down into bite-sized segments--you can literally read a topic and digest it in 5 minutes or less. Or, if you want to sit down for the full meal, read and absorb several topics, review some you've read before, and skip ahead to some other stuff you found in the index. Then go draw. You'll be flexing art muscles you never knew you had. And you will be very pleased with your results.
ONE OF THE GREATEST BOOKS ON DRAWING EVER WRITTEN.......2003-02-13
I DON'T KNOW WHAT BOOKS YOU HAVE READ ON DRAWING BEFORE BUT THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS ON DRAWING EVER WRITTEN. ANOTHER EXCELLENT BOOK IS BY HIS FORMER STUDENT ANTHONY RYDER ENTITLED THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO FIGURE DRAWING. EACH IS INCREDIBLY DETAILED IN ITS DESCRIPTIONS ON TECHNIQUE AS WELL AS THE LEVEL OF ATTENTION AND CARE REQUIRED TO CREATE BEAUTIFUL DRAWINGS. IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO HAVE A CAREER IN REPRESENTATIONAL ART YOU HAVE GOT TO READ AT LEAST ONE OF, IF NOT BOTH THESE BOOKS. OTHERWISE YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY "MORE MONEY" FOR A GUIDE TO DRAWING BY MARCUS MANDELOWITZ WHICH SAYS THE SAME THINGS, IT JUST TAKES LONGER TO SAY THEM AND MAKES YOU PAY MORE FOR IT. ANY OTHER BOOK IS PROBOBLY NOT WORTH BUYING.
Great drawings, but text could be better.......2002-06-29
Jacobs' book focuses mostly on figure drawing, and not drawing in general. He makes a number of points that are highly useful for someone who wants to draw well, such as empasizing the need to avoid imposing symbolic forms (circles, tubes, etc.) on figure drawings. As part of that emphasis he stresses some practical points, including the need for the artist to notice that there are no true parallel lines or concave forms in the human body. Unfortunatley he is a bit too long-winded and mystical-sounding when he makes these points, and I found myself having to re-read many of his passages to figure out what he meant, or else simply saying, "Huh?" This book would probably be better to use after you've read one by Jacobs' former student, Anthony Ryder, called "The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing," which is one of my favorite how-to art books. Ryder covers much of the same ground as Jacobs, but is much clearer and has more practical detail. However, as a previous reviewer noted, Jacobs' drawings included in the book are quite impressive and inspiring by themselves. (Many of Ryder's drawings in his book are remarkably similar in style to those done by Jacobs- you can definitely tell where he learned to draw.)
Great inspiration for aspring artists..........2000-05-09
This book has several simply marvelous sketches by the artist, many of which you'll wish were available as prints. While perhaps not as instuctive in teaching you how to draw as it might be (the author focuses more on mind-set then techniques), the drawings will inspire you to improve.

.The area is Muskoka. No such thing as The Muskokas.......2001-02-27
This area of Ontario name is derived from an Indian Chief. There was only one person so the name can not carry an s. He was a wonderful person and deserves to be honoured. He taught many pioneers how to live in their new home area. Media has sadly slipped into the error of calling the area The Muskokas. It is wrong. Please continue to call it by its correct name. It is Muskoka. Thank you.
A Difinitive Work.......1999-07-16
This volume explains the colorful history of the steamboat era in the Muskoka region in Ontario from the turn of the century until the last steamboat tied up for the last time in 1958. There are also descriptions and photographs of the many luxury hotels that lined the lake shores and were served by the steamers. The final chapter describes the Segwun, built in 1887 and the lone survivor of the steamboat era, tied up at the Muskoka Wharf in Gravenhurst as a floating museum, rotting away day by day and how, what started out to be only simple repairs just to keep her afloat, turned into a full-fledged restoration project and eventual return to service. Today, she proudly steams on three lakes as the only coal-fired passenger steamer in Canada and the oldest engine-powered vessel in North America. No maritime liberary is complete without this book.

Outdated.......2007-06-25
I was really looking forward to this book. It appeared to be the ideal book designed with assignments to increase knowledge of methods of animation. Twenty years ago, this was probably a good book. Does ANYONE animate using acetate cels anymore? Does anyone want to? Maybe if I had been looking for a history of animation, I wouldn't have been as disappointed as I am.
In general, I've gotten great books from Amazon, and this book isn't their fault. It just proves that sometimes, being able to browse through the book in a real bookstore will give you a better idea of whether the book is what you're looking for. Being able to search inside the book (as is possible in this case) doesn't always give you enough of the book to really see.
I just don't understand all the 5-star reviews that don't mention any of this. Are they not drawing with computers or Wacom drawing pads? I honestly don't need to know the methods they used on Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willy. If I buy a book on printing, I'm not presented with a description of Gutenberg's press. Sigh.
EXCELLENT ANIME .......2007-01-12
Bought for my 19 year old. This book is awesome and really brings out the artist in the person drawing/sketching/using the book. You will love it too and it's suitable for most ages.
Great book for the beginning animator!.......2005-06-08
I just ordered this book. Many flash animators have recommended "The Animator's Workbook", "Cartoon Animation", "Cartooning: Animation 1 with Preston Blair (HT26)" or "The Animator's Survival Kit" in order to create flash cartoons.
I also have "Cartooning: Animation 1 with Preston Blair (HT26)". I have browsed through Richard Williams' "The Animator's Survival Kit" and that seemed too much for me to handle. I'm not an animator by trade but a wannabe. I look forward to improving my animation skills with this book! I also got this book for an excellent price!
6/14/05 - I just received my book. I will be using flash to create web based cartoons! This book is very appealing to me and doesn't intimidate me. I need a book like this because I'm not an animator by trade. You must pick this book, "Cartooning: Animation 1 with Preston Blair (HT26)" or "Cartoon Animation" if you are a beginner. All three books are excellent choices if you want to create flash cartoons! I prefer "Cartooning: Animation 1 with Preston Blair (HT26)" more than the other books.
Not bad, but there are much better options.......2005-04-11
I bought this book a while ago, but recently got my hands on Richard Williams' "The Animator's Survival Kit" and it is astonishingly stronger in every way. I just bought that one tonight actually. Skip this one and go straight to Williams' book, it is strong for beginners, and even stronger for people like myself who need something more detailed and insightful than "The Animator's Workbook." I didn't know there was more that I could learn about the basics and subtleties for a great foundation until I read "Survival Kit." Please learn from my mistake and do yourself a favor by buying that one. You'll be way ahead of the curve.
Perfect :).......2004-05-18
OK.. So this is a bit bias.. But I have the pleasure of working with Tony in my 2D animation class. He is a great teacher and his book gave me a great understanding of animation and how I can apply these concepts to 3D. This is a great book to get started with! Good for 2D and 3D artists. :)
It's more than worth the price.
I just can't wait till his new book get published!

An interdisciplinary approach to the study embraces not only musicology and ethnology, but also material culture considerations. In spite of the complexity of the topic treated here, care has been taken to use simple, readable language that will be relevant to serious musicologists and general readers alike.
