For years, collectors have relied on marks as a way to authenticate and date genuine antiques and collectibles. But with the flood of fakes and reproductions, determining which piece is genuine and which is not can mean the difference between a rare find and a costly mistake.
This new book, organized by category and then by manufacturer, shows more than 1,000 faked, forged, and confusing marks side-by-side with the original marks so readers can easily distinguish forgeries from original, valuable items. Mark Chervenka is America's top expert on antique fakes and reproductions, offering priceless advice via television, radio, and other news outlets. He is also the author of the best-selling Antique Trader Guide to Fakes & Reproductions.

Side-by-side comparisons of authentic and typical forged marks
Customer Reviews:
Good general book for an antiques dealer........2007-03-23
This is a good book for the serious antiques dealer or collector. This book contains clear pictures of the real and fake marks side by side (mostly in black and white) with some dates, and is split into categories according to type of antique.
Good.......2006-12-15
A very interesting book for introducing beginning appraisers to fake and forged marks. The illustrations are very helpful. Information is plentiful. I would have preferred it to be all in color, though.

Book Description
An eye-opening portrait of a vibrant film culture, The Midnight Eye Guide to New Japanese Film is the most comprehensive study of the Japanese filmmaking scene yet written. Tom Mes and Jasper Sharp explore the astounding resurgence of Japanese cinema, both live action and animated, profiling 19 contemporary Japanese filmmakers, from the well-known (Kitano, Miike, Miyazaki) to the up-and-coming (Naomi Kawase, Satoshi Kon, Shinya Tsukamoto) and reviewing 97 of their recent films. With 100+ images from behind and in front of the camera, this is a book any film lover will savor. Foreword by Hideo Nakata, director of Ring.
Tom Mes (in Paris) and
Jasper Sharp (in Tokyo) co-edit Midnighteye.com, the premier English-language website on Japanese cinema.
Customer Reviews:
The best book available on modern Japanese film.......2005-06-01
For modern Japanese film, Midnight Eye is the definitive information source. Tom Mes and Jaspar Sharp's website covers film reviews, interviews, DVD releases, feature articles, a calendar of events and film festivals, and absolutely anything an interested person would want to know. With such a pedigree, there are no more qualified people to write a guide of this kind.
"The Midnight Eye Guide to New Japanese Film" is as excellent as one would expect, an essential book for those interested in modern Japanese film. The layout is well-balanced, covering director profiles and film reviews, using both original material and previously featured articles. The writing is crisp and clear, and each chapter provides insight even on topics where one is knowledgeable. Over 100 photos show some of the visual highlights of this visual media.
Each chapter focuses on a director, from history to motivation to style, with a review of that director's top five or six films. Being new Japanese film, the profiles begin in 1956 with Seijin Suzuki ("Elegy to Fighting," "Tokyo Drifter"), a complicated and controversial director. With the Criterion Collection currently making a push of Suzuki's catalog on DVD, this makes a great starting point and leaves me looking forward to each new release. All of the major directors are profiled, such as Shohei Imamura ("The Eel"), Kinji Fukasaku ("Battles without Honor and Humanity" "Battle Royale") Masato Harada ("Bounce KoGals"), Kiyoshi Kurosawa ("Cure"), Studio Ghibli luminaries Isao Takahata ("Grave of the Fireflies") and Hayao Miyazaki ("Spirited Away"), Takeshi Kitano ("Hanabi"), Takashi Miike ("Ichi the Killer," "Audition"), Hirokazu Kore-eda ("After Life"), and Hideo Nakata ("The Ring"). Other, lesser-known directors are also given their due, such as Nara-based naturalist Naomi Kawase ("Suzaku.")
The final section covers what they call "The Other Players," those who have put out a film or two of exceptional quality but hadn't yet established a solid career in the same rank. Animator Satoshi Kon's "Perfect Blue," Masayuki Suo's "Shall We Dance?," Mamoru Oshii's "Avalon," Juzo Itami's "Tampopo" and Mitsuo Yanagimachi's "Fire Festival" are all given their due. More than just simple film-reviews, the authors pack each spotlight with as much interest and insight as their director profiles.
With Donald Richie's seminal "100 Years of Japanese Film" covering the past, it is great to see such a qualified inheritor of the future. Anyone interested in Japanese film will be pleased with "The Midnight Eye Guide to New Japanese Film," both for its insights into current favorites as well as the host of new favorites that they will undoubtedly discovered.
Move over Ozu.......2005-01-07
If you are a fan of modern Japanese Film and have the Internet, it is most likely that you are familiar with the website Midhight Eye opperated by Tom Mes and Jasper Sharp. The website is a treasure trove of not only movie and book reviews, but interviews with numerous directors and actors, including the likes of Suzuki Seijun and Asano Tadanobu.
The book covers around 50 years of film, beginning with older, but still popular, directors Imamura Shohei and the above mentioned Suzuki Seijun to younger directors such as Tsukamoto Shinya and Ishii Sogo. The book portrays well known directors such as Kitano Takeshi and Miike Takashi as well as lesser known directors such as Kawase Naomi, also the only female director in the book, whose base of opperation is the ancient capital of Nara rather than Tokyo or Osaka.
The book covers a wide variety of films from yakuza numbers such as Fukasaku's fierce _Battles without Honor and Humanity_ to the Kore-eda's pseudo-documentary _After Life_. horror films, pink films, science fiction, and documentaries are also covered.
The writing is quite clear and informative, and one learns interesting tidbits of information about their favorite directors. this book would be a good guide for fans of Japanese films as well as newcomers.

Nice for folk musicians.......2007-05-14
This is a nice book for the folk singer in your life. Anyone who plays, or simply enjoys listening, will also appreciate this expose of the development and intricacies of the folk genre and some of its better (and less) known artists.

Divulges the real strategies used by professional poker players to consistently win major (and minor) no-limit hold 'em tournaments. With poker tournaments televised on more than a dozen television networks and internet poker sweeping the nation, the popularity of the game is at an all-time high. Everyone thinks they have a shot, as evidenced by the 5,600+ player field in the $10,000 main event at the 2005 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. If these weekend warriors hope to win, they'd better know the same strategies that the pros use. Authors Blair Rodman and Lee Nelson, both poker professionals, spill the beans about the strategies they (and most of the big-name poker players) use to keep scooping the pots.

help in the wsop.......2007-09-16
I found the information contained in Kill Phil useful & productive.
It can provide another weapon in the arsenal of a serious poker player.
No system of play can substitute for hours of practice, lots of reading,
and constantly striving for improvement in your game. I experimented with Kill Phil in the recent WSOP Ladies circuit event in Tunica and went from placing 27th last year to placing 18th this year. Aside from the basic Kill Phil system, the book contains advice & a tournament overview
from two people who have been there. Of the many poker books I have read,
I found this one very worthwhile!
There's a very important concept here........2007-09-14
While reading this book, the reviews, online message boards, and playing constant online tourneys, it has occurred to me that there's a very important concept here. Namely, is there a mathematical basis for going all-in anytime you deside to play a hand?
I can see how these ideas were derived. For instance, suppose I have AK, and you have QJ, well since the status quo is for me to win, if neither of us improve, I'll win. On the other hand, IF you pair Q or J and I don't pair A or K, then you'll win. The same is true whether or not you hold 8 5. Also, obviously, if either of us draw to a straight or a flush we'll win, but if we both do, I'll win. And so on.
So, I can see how there might be some logic to going all-in with 8 5 as easy as one would go all-in with AJ. But here's where it comes back to reality. Even though it's true that if no one has a pair we both have the same odds of pairing something, that doesn't mean that the better hands won't win in the long run.
It just throws a giant monkey wrench into the picture in the short run.
So, what's the moral of my message? This book presents a legitimate point describing a way to try and win a tournament. Whether or not it works is debatable, so go ahead and try it if you like.
I think the better players will come out on top anyway, and shouldn't be so quick to condemn this method.
Can't complain.......2007-07-08
The first time I used the strategy in this book, I won a 180 player tournament. Hard to argue with those results!
Phil Killers.......2007-06-12
I found this book very interesting. Not a bible, however, an interesting read that may well help me in future, I don't think it's the ultimate info, but another piece of artillary!
Like all 'how to' books, no one, no one would give up 'the nuts' of a system. They would keep it too themselves!
Not much help.......2007-02-19
I play a lot of poker and developed a successful method over the years without books. Playing this strategy after reading though, my ROI in tourneys went way, way down.

Customer Reviews:
Great Choice for Buffy Fans.......2006-01-29
I thought this was a fun little book. It's nice to just flip through and laugh at some of the quotes in the show.
.......2005-10-23
The content of this book could fit in a single web page, and since essentially none of it is original material, I figure it should be evaluated based on which quotes were selected and how they are presented. The presentation is a high level grouping of quotes into topics, and within each topic there is the most obvious/straightforward listing of quotes-- what was said and who said it. I personally do not find the selection of quotes to be particularly representative of what I felt while watching the show were the most salient or memorable moments or dialog; however, I do think it is far better than just randomly pulling quotes out of the scripts, and so is worth consideration. Of course the book has value as statement of appreciation of the show; I have no idea the degree to which this book serves that purpose better than alternatives...
Please, save your money.......2005-08-29
This book has so many errors in it I don't know where to begin. Most of the information is wrong. Even if the quote is correct usually who said it or the episode name is wrong. If you are a true Buffy fan you will remember all of the quotes in this book and if not they will be meaningless to you. One good thing about it is that on a day when you have nothing else to do you can sit there and correct all of the mistakes in it. It is possible that I am being overly critical. I am a big enough of a Buffy freak that I can recite all 144 episode names in order so Buffy is one thing that I am very picky about.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: She said quotable things, a lot.......2005-02-28
Chances are that nothing ever said on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" will ever make it into "Bartlett's Familiar Quotations," so Micol Ostow and Steven Brezenoff have attempted to correct for that shortcoming by compiling "The Quotable Slayer." This paperback also presents a more convenient alternative to flipping through your editions of "The Watcher's Guide" for the "Quotable Buffy" or the "Quote of the Week" for each episode, and it also avoids getting into ephemeral language, loose idioms, and mixed etymologies such as Michael Adams provides in "Slayer Slang: A 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' Lexicon." What "BtVS" fans get here is a walk down memory lane through the one-liners and choice dialogue from the seven seasons of the show.
"The Quotable Slayer" is divided into sections devoted to Quotable Slayer (1-14); Quotable Watcher (15-23); Quotable Scoobies, which covers Willow, Xander, Angel/Angelus, Cordelia, Spike, Oz, Anya, Riley, Tara, and Dawn (24-81); and Quotable Other People, which includes Faith, Wesley, and Other Others (82-88). For me the key section is "Buffy On..." which looks at the specific topics of Slaying, Authority, Knowledge, Big Bad, Fashion, Food, Holidays, Money, Fear (Itself), War, Evil, Sex/Dating (interesting order, huh?), Friendship, Love, Religion, Miscellaneous, and Quotable Music ("Once More With Feeling") and Quotable Finale ("Chosen") for the big finish (89-202).
For me that lengthy last section is key because I really was hoping "The Quotable Buffy" would be arranged so that you could look by choice Slayer quotes about vampires, parenting, dating, and other modern horrors. But I know that a "Bartlett's" style index where you can find every quote in "The Quotable Slayer" that uses the words "spell," "bloody" or "vengeance demon." If you are looking for a particular quote, say Vamp Willow's "Bored now" from "Doppelgangland," you can figure out the logic of the book well enough to find it pretty quickly. But you need to make allowances that quotes can both be by and be about different people and that sometimes the topic is more important that the speaker.
While walking down memory lane in "The Quotable Slayer" you will find a couple of mistooks that need to be corrupted and it is clear Ostow and Brezenoff are working, at least in part, from original scripts because there are variations and also lines that were cut from what aired. So "The Quotable Slayer" is not a must-have for your "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" library but it is certainly enjoyable on its own terms. Finally, let me take this opportunity to say that the time on "BtVS" when everybody stops and stares at Buffy because she makes a William S. Burroughs reference really should have happened way back in "Enemies" when Buffy said of Faith, "The Girl makes Godot look punctual," because I find it hard to believe that Buffy reads Existential drama (Glad to get that one off of my chest).
Great if you like Buffy.......2004-12-11
Off course, if you don't like Buffy, why would you even think about buying this book ?!?
It has a lot of those great Buffy quotes in it that made the show so much fun to watch, neatly categorized (very Giles or early Willow) per character or on different topics, such as love, war, friends, relationships... And some pictures in the middle.
But, like some other reviewers said: there are some mistakes in it. But it's still a really funny book, makes you relive all those funny moments, always good for a laugh !
