Book Description
One of the most enigmatic painters who ever lived, Hieronymus Bosch (c.1453- 1516) is also one of the most enduringly popular. His fantastical scenes of grotesque creatures, devils, and monsters are open to many interpretations, keeping his art endlessly fascinating over the centuries.
This luxurious volume-published to coincide with a major exhibition in Bosch's native Netherlands-examines his art in the context of his times. With every Bosch painting and drawing superbly reproduced in full color, this beautiful book penetrates the mystery that has always surrounded the artist. His worldview, often seen as bizarre, is shown to correspond with that of his contemporaries, among them the scholar and humanist Erasmus. What makes Bosch unique, the authors show, are his unfettered imagination and immense talent.
250 illustrations, 190 in full color, 208 pages, 91/2 x 123/8"
Customer Reviews:
The Best Recent Introduction to Bosch.......2004-12-23
I have read most of the monographs on Bosch, and this represents the best recent effort to present Bosch's works on an introductory level. Koldeweij examines Bosch's obscure biography; Vermet discusses the problems of dating and attribution of Bosch's works; Vandenbroeck looks at some of the themes in Bosch's iconography. The only problem with the book is a lack of imagery details. The reproductions are beautiful, but there are not enough of them. The publishers should have made the book much larger with more images. The publishers should have used Charles de Tolnay's huge monograph for a model. As of yet, there is no definitive Bosch monograph that combines Tolnay's amount of image examples and Dirk Bax's exhaustive iconographic analyses. But if I had to pick a good introduction to Bosch and his works, this would be it.
Get Your Glasses Out.......2002-04-02
I've been thinking about buying this book and finally came across it in a bookstore so I was able to preview it before buying it on amazon.[com] I'm glad I did because like other reviews, the main disappointment with this book is that the paintings are reproduced small. They're reproduced almost as footnotes to the text but my main reason in buying an art book is for the visuals. And with Bosch, there are so many details but they were just too small to see here. The art should have been given a full page without text surrounding an image. This was a big let down, I was looking forward to buying this book, but now I'll pass on it. With the small reproductions it just isn't worth the price. The 1 star is for Bosch's art which is still great despite the poor book design.
Look elsewhere for Bosch..........2002-02-25
This book has three essay chapters. The first chapter deals with Bosch's home town..... anything about Bosch's home town. Details are thrown in because they are known, even when they do not add to our understanding of Bosch. The second chapter discusses a new method for dating the wood panels that Bosch and others painted on, and questions whether some paintings can really be attributed to Bosch. This could be an interesting discussion if there was more explanation of how the paintings had been judged and attributed to Bosch previously. Instead it is new data without much context. The final chapter deals with the imagery of Bosch. This has the potential to be the most enlightening, but falls well short. By the end the reader may know a little more about Bosch, but not enough to warrant wading through this book.
Now all could still be forgiven if the presentation of the artwork was good. Because Bosch is enjoyable without explanations. But the presentation in the book is not. The paintings and drawings appear scattered throughout with no rhyme or reason. The numbering of the pictures is frustrating to follow. You will be searching back and forth through the book looking for the pictures that correspond to the point being made in the text. When you do find the picture, you probably will be disappointed. Even the quintessential Bosch work " The Garden of Earthly Delights" is presented in quarter page size. In contrast Bosch imitators are given larger representation. I don't understand why. The poor lay-out even extends to page numbering. There is a reason for the convention of numbering pages on the outer margins away from the spine. This was brought home very strongly as I searched for the page numbers halfway along the pages near the spine. This may sound a trivial complaint, but this book seemed designed to test the patience of the reader. "Luckily" I got this book for half price, but that was still paying way too much. There are far better and cheaper books out there on Bosch. Go with them.

Scholarly but poorly presented.......2002-02-11
As a scholarly discussion of Bosch the book is excellent. However, as a presentation of his art it is absolutely atrocious. All complete pictures are shown in a miniature form nearly impossible to study, and details are disjointedly scattered throughout the book and unduly difficult to track down. This is not a book for those who want to experience and enjoy Bosch's art for its own sake.

The old lady from Ipanema: changing notions of old age in Brazil [An article from: Journal of Aging Studies]
A. Leibing
Manufacturer: Elsevier
ProductGroup: Book

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Aging Studies, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
This article identifies the main categories, notions, and values associated with aging in articles published in urban Brazilian print media 1967-2002, and uses these categories to trace several historical changes regarding what constitutes ''successful'' aging in Brazil. The historical changes include the transition of aging from a divine to more worldly concern; from a male to predominantly female preoccupation; from 'old age' to 'third age.' These transitions are intertwined with new moral hierarchies, and are linked to the medicalization of old age in the late twentieth century.

Book Description
“I call this book The Intent to Live because great actors don’t seem to be acting, they seem to be actually living.”
–Larry Moss, from the Introduction
When Oscar-winning actors Helen Hunt and Hilary Swank accepted their Academy Awards, each credited Larry Moss’s guidance as key to their career-making performances. There is a two-year waiting list for his advanced acting classes. But now everyone–professionals and amateurs alike–can discover Moss’s passionate, in-depth teaching.
Inviting you to join him in the classroom and onstage, Moss shares the techniques he has developed over thirty years to help actors set their emotions, imagination, and behavior on fire, showing how the hard work of preparation pays off in performances that are spontaneous, fresh, and authentic.
From the foundations of script analysis to the nuances of physicalization and sensory work, here are the case studies, exercises, and insights that enable you to connect personally with a script, develop your character from the inside out, overcome fear and inhibition, and master the technical skills required for success in the theater, television, and movies.
Far more than a handbook,
The Intent to Live is the personal credo of a master teacher. Moss’s respect for actors and love of the actor’s craft enliven every page, together with examples from a wealth of plays and films, both current and classic, and vivid appreciations of great performances. Whether you act for a living or simply want a deeper understanding of acting greatness,
The Intent to Live will move, instruct, and inspire you.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
What EVERY actor needs to know!!!.......2007-07-10
Larry Moss is an amazing acting teacher!!! This book gives anyone who is even considering acting a chance to explore and learn all the ins and outs that this craft holds. He's brutally honest, which is something that more people should be. I highly recommend this book to anyone who acts, wants to act or just really loves actors.
Good point of view.......2007-03-08
Interesting book but mostly based on the author's points of view on acting and not well adapted as a source of information for new actors
The epiphany I have been waiting for!.......2006-05-21
This book is excellent! Larry Moss makes clear the terms that are commonly used in acting class (Objectives, intentions, relationships). I have heard these terms used many times in acting class, but didn't realize how important they are until I read this book. Larry Moss describes them in simple and pratical terms and uses examples from classic and current films.
I broke down in tears after practicing the exercises taught in the "Emotional Trigger" chapter. I cannot wait to get new scripts in acting class so that I can utilize the skills that I learned in this book. I highly recommend this to any actor who wants to improve in their craft. This book was the Epiphany that I was waiting for!
Larry Moss is this Generation's Premier Acting Teacher.......2005-08-12
Bravo!!! I love this book. As a professional Actress for over twenty five years I have read many books on the craft of acting and I must say next to Uta Hagen's respect for acting this is book runs a close second. Larry Moss knows his "stuff". He gives great insight to the reader and presents helpful exercises for the reader to use. This book is inspiring and exciting. If you aren't an actor you want to be by the time you finish reading this book. Larry Moss is truly one of our great Master Acting teachers of this Generation.
This Is A Good One.......2005-06-11
Wow! This is a great book
One of the jobs of an actor when interpreting a part is to put into place his or her experiences, to take advantage of the past in the present moment. In his book, Larry Moss not only gives us, actors, tools for acting, for the technique of acting, but he shares his personal experiences, showing that acting is also living and being able to re-create specific moments in your life. That is the secret that makes this book different from many other acting books.
Moss's personal experiences tie The Intent to Live together with a thread of powerful emotional content. I responded particularly strongly, for example, to his account of a dinner party with Stella Adler. The conversation and inspiration felt so personal and true that I found myself weeping together with everyone around the table.
In addition, Mr. Moss offers many exercises that, as a professional actress, I believe useful, creative and unique: "The System of Wants" and "Thesaurus" exercises are a couple of my favorites.
Larry Moss tells us his truth. He reveals himself as a human being and as an actor who benefits from lived experience. When he talks about his life, it could be my life he's talking about. When he talks about his path as an actor and growth as an artist, his story resonates so closely with my own that he becomes a companion in the quest for the career as well as the art of acting. I applaud his honesty and humility.

An Amazing Book for ANYONE Interested in Music History.......1997-07-11
L.B. and Jim have exhausted every resource to write the most comprehensive history ever of the original Ephiphone company. Nearly every page is loaded with photographs, advertisements or sidebars, and there are also interviews with guitar greats like Les Paul (describing his experiments creating the solid-body electric guitar). But my favorite is the actual Epiphone history. Here the authors have managed to capture an American tragedy as the Stathopoulo family struggles to maintain a beautifully crafted line of musical instruments. Put this book on your coffee table, and your guests won't be able to resist paging through it

Book Description
In the century after the Restoration of 1660, English provincial towns experienced a cultural renaissance. This penetrating study examines the economic and social origins which stimulated the most striking features of that revival: the transformation of the urban landscape under the influence of classical architecture and the emergent forces of planning; and the remarkable expansion in the provision of public leisure. Concentrating on the interaction between urban culture and society as a whole, Peter Borsay draws on a wide range of disciplines, shedding new light not only on the development of the early modern town, but also on the relatively neglected period of English history between the Civil War and the Industrial Revolution. Reference material is included, in a detailed town-by-town appendix.

The English Urban Renaissance: Culture and Society in the.......2001-06-09
This book does much to dispel the myth that London was the font of all culture in England during the eighteenth century; likewise, it challenges the long-accepted notion that the gentry in the provinces desired little but to emulate London fashion in all things, be it personal fashion, garden design or architecture. Peter Borsay's writing style is smooth and erudite, his grasp on the many interweaving threads of eighteenth century life is firm and confident; the tapestry he creates in this book is as colourful and rich as it is flawless. As a seasoned historian in this area I suggest that no serious library of works dealing with eighteenth-century English culture is complete without this wonderful work.

Book Description
Richard Cumberland is one of the seventeenth century's most interesting political theorists. His masterpiece, the De legibus naturae(1672), has rarely been examined on its own terms, but by tracing the political, religious and intellectual circumstances of the composition of this puzzling work, and showing its importance as a critique of Thomas Hobbes, author of the Leviathan, Dr Parkin demonstrates how Cumberland created a new political and ethical theory which absorbed and neutralised many of Hobbes's insights. He also examines the science of the Royal Society as a basis for Cumberland's natural law theory and its influence on such thinkers as Samuel Pufendorf and John Locke. Overall, the book provides an important new perspective on the interaction of science, religion and politics in Restoration England.Dr JON PARKIN teaches in the Department of History at King's College, London.

Book Description
The pursuit of sexual freedom and its political, philosophical and practical implications are the themes of this wide-ranging new study of seventeenth-century literature. The author examines the writers of the later seventeenth century in their historical context, and focuses particularly on what happens when women, as well as men, desire sexual freedom. In a study of the writings of the Earl of Rochester, notorious for their sexual candor, and of Aphra Behn, most controversial woman of her day, the author explores the tensions inherent in the ideology of individual liberty in the conduct of sexual relations inside and outside marriage.
