The book contains a lot of very valuable information. It is geared primarily towards the investor who wants to explore angel investing, i.e. private investmentment in early-stage enterprises. The book does a good job in explaining the risks, necessary time commitment and potential benefits of angel investing. Thankfully, it is not of the 'how to get rich easy' kind. On the negative side, the book repeats some of its points ad nauseam and is not a stylistic masterwork.

Gerald A. Benjamin and Joel Margulis tell the current or prospective angel or early-stage investor how to best judge pre-IPO investments. They emphasize matching investors with the right entrepreneurs to create an effective team in which the investor not only provides the seed or early-stage capital but also contributes good advice and contacts. Besides discussing effective strategies, the book includes an extensive directory of top venture forums, angel organizations, publications and Web sites. In addition, any investor will benefit from the thorough rundown of due-diligence points that the authors recommend. While the book is targeted at prospective investors, we [...] encourage entrepreneurs with start-up companies to use it as a productive guide to making more effective funding pitches, although the companion book for entrepreneurs would probably be more helpful. One caveat: Some ideas are repeated - even with similar wording - from chapter to chapter. But overall this is a solid book, even though the free flows of money it evokes have been arrested somewhat lately.

Gutierrez has been fighting for the rights of Chicanos since the age of 22. He founded the Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO)in 1967. He was the co-founder of The Mexican American Unity Council. He led the group in founding La Raza Unida Party. As a judge and a professor, he has fought for equal treatment and accomplished so much.
The real facts are that Aztlan was stolen from Mexico, The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was ratified on Feb. 2, 1848 & Mexico had no choice but to sign due to their bad government. Polk had wanted to steal more land than planned but Trist had somewhat of a heart and had sympathy for the mexicans. Trist was considered "contemptibly base" by Polk.
People are so ignorant on here and are scared that the truth will come out, since we are lied to in grammar school about real American history and real Americans for that matter. Those of you that don't like Mexicans or Chicanos in our country, can go back to Europe or anywhere else you came from because we aren't going anywhere. As for the military fighting against us, we are half of the military!

Gutierrez is not a racist. In fact he supports Chicanos (AMERICANS from Mexican heritage) in gaining equal footing to basic rights such as education, political rights, ect. There is nothing racist about this notion. In fact if you read the book you would find inspirational accounts of Hispanics who have successfully made a name for themselves which serve to inspire the young Latinos who read thier stories. Young Chicanos, such as myself, need the encouragement that Gutierrez offers in his book in order to realize our political power (which will only grow as we continue to grow in numbers and educate ourselves). Anyone who has misinterpreted Gutierrez's message as racist should reread the book anger and hate aside! :)
A Racist Manual on How to Lie to Mexicans.......2006-04-18
There is nothing tongue and cheek about Atzlan or the La Raza Movement. It is similar to the Nazi's after World War 1, who lost lands and wanted to reclaim them in World War 2.
As a result of the Mexican/American war that Mexico waged and LOST, the United States forgave the $3.25 million debt, and paid Mexico $15 million for the ceded territories that included
California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and the western parts of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. This Treaty of Guadalupe-Hildago, in which Mexico abandoned its claims to the above territories, was signed on February 2nd, 1848.
Today in schools, businesses and churches in Mexico the people and students are told lies that theses ceded territories above were taken from the Mexicans, and that they have rightful ownership of them. They are invading the United States by the millions to take back these territories sold to the US, in the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hildalgo. They are brainwashing the Mexican citizens to believe it is rightfully theirs. This is nothing less then what Hitler did to the Germans in World War 2.
Vincente Fox is like Hitler and is encouraging his citizens to invade the US and take back these ceded territories.
The United States must take this invasion seriously, and bring the military might of the US upon these Mexican invading forces. Protect our people and lands to the death !

I think the previous reviewer missed the fact that this book clearly belongs in the "humor" section, and humor, of course, is relative - one person's funny will always offend someone else.
As a resident of New Mexico, I see the horrific results of discrimination and racism against Hispanics every day. I also see Hispanics rise above their ill treatment with humor, grace, and, of course, a few little "favors" returned in kind.
Gutierrez's book is sharply written, wickedly funny, incisive, and relevant, as is its counterpart, "A Gringo Manual on How To Handle Mexicans", which could be construed as equally racist by a similarly misguided reviewer.
I noticed recently that one of the graduate Spanish classes at the University of New Mexico here in Albuquerque is using Gutierrez's book in class. If it were truly as racist as some people seem to think, I doubt it would have made the reading list.
I do wish Americans would stop assuming that all Hispanics are illegal immigrants who should "sign the guest book" or go home. This view is just as racist as anything Gutierrez might write about. Many Mexican immigrants are citizens or resident aliens with jobs, homes, and families. Many Hispanics (especially here in the southwest) have been here for generations. Albuquerque was a thriving Spanish settlement 300 years ago, long before most of the British colonies of the East Coast even existed. There were Hispanics in the Americas before any English-speaker ever dreamed of coming here, so get over yourselves!

An Important Look into The Control of our People.......2003-03-26
An important book that "gives it to you straight" with real life examples of age old techniques that are still being used to control people today. This book is a must read for all Latinos who are interested in the political field. It is also a must read for anyone trying to understand the political history of Latinos.
A GREAT READ!.......2002-05-19
This book was fist published in the 70's, when the Chicano movement was still making newspaper headlines. Here, he revises, expands, and updates his previous material. The book is divided into three parts: Powerlessness, 100 New Tricks on How to Handle Mexicans, and the original Gringo Manual on How to Handle Mexicans. (in case you haven't guessed, the title and theme are meant to be taken sarcastically).
He uses examples of modern day racism (100 New Tricks) to illustrate that we are still dealing with crippling racism.
Some parts are hard to read, because they expose the ugliness many of us have to deal with, but he lightens the load with his humor.
Interesting info is offered here, such as the fact that we are undercounted by census takers and that our literature is never to be found in maintsream bookstores (it's scary too, because then shoppers might come to the conclusion that there are only ten or so Chicana/o writers out there, when there are thousands).
He also points out the major problems in the education and voting systems, and how La Raza is being purposely excluded from adequate schools and politics.
He delves into the issue of Mexican "immigrants", and makes some very valid points about the absurdity of the System.
It's a good read for those who believe the rhetoric that everything is equal, as well as for those who are well aware that things are not equal. He's coming out with a new book soon, entitled "The Chicano Manual on How to Deal With Gringos" and I can't wait!

Great book that I have been looking for. This book was written in a style that I, an offline editor trying to move up to online work, could understand. It deals with how to color correct - not just how to use a specific tool (though it does that also). Well worth the money!

This is a fantastic book - required reading for anyone producing video.
Everyone will have tried basic color correction and been confounded by the number of parameters that all seem to do the same thing, yet interact to produce worse results than you started with. This book goes into great detail about how luminance and color influence your image and leads you through excercises to try on your own material, and images provided on the enclosed CD.
Although it is a technical subject, it is written in a very readable way.
It is amazing the changes that happen with quite subtle adjustments. That is the key to everything. Subtlety that creates great results.
The book covers color correction to match other footage, but also correction to create special effects and drama. There are even examples of how to highlight the subject from a confused background.
A, MUST READ book that should be on everyone's shelf.
Color Correction for DV.......2006-08-23
I never get desappointed when I get a new book from DV collection.
This book was an excellent acquisition, it goes into details and shares the experience of the author. It is not only for the video enthusiast but for professionals who work on video as a reference book.
It shows a broad collection of tools that will help us make a better video and also correcting those shots made by consumer DV cameras.
A good overview, but not superb.......2005-03-02
The book does a good job of being an overview for color correcting video - but unfortunately because it avoids anything application specific it fails to show you how to do stuff in your specific NLE. Training dedicated to a specific application & color correction- like my FCP training DVD by Digital Film Tree is much better because it teaches the theory AND the tool - so you cover both angles while this was just the theory. But that may be what you want - or your NLE may not have a book about color correction dedicated to it. If you're a FCP user, there's a book called 'Advanced Finishing Techniques' in the Apple Training Series that I would recommend over this one.
A real eye-opener.......2005-02-27
This book was a real eye-opener for me.
It taught me a lot of important things and most importantly a methodology for analyzing the frame data (waveform, vector scope, and the eye-dropper) before attempting any correction.
Before I bought the book I read the reviews here, the good and the bad, and as far as the bad goes I think they come from the level of expectation from the book and/or level of expertise. IMHO this book is not intended for complete novices (with some exceptions, of course) and not for online masters as well (some will may benefit from a vol 2 if there ever be one). It is more for an intermediate-beginner, someone who has some experience in online editing (or photography) and wants to gain some valuable knowledge.
I do agree that more examples of even harsh correction would be beneficial (again that would have to wait for volume 2).
To sum it up - I bought the book and I am very happy with this buy and I would definitely purchase a sequel.

This collection of pieces is great because there are easy to play pieces by Beethoven, Scarlatti etc. I like the Sonatina section best; they sound very accomplished when you play them but actually they are really easy. There are also some nice Etudes to use to practice basic techniques; these are lovely too. I didn't enjoy the first folk song section so much and I have no-one to play the duets with, but I intend to buy the book today!
