An Extraordinary Achievement.......2005-10-02

There is really only one word that describes this historically significant painter AND this extensive volume about his contribution to landscape painting and that word is 'Stunning'. For those who do not readily recognize the name of van Ruisdael, that fact may be due to the media's attention to only certain controversial painters. Jacob van Ruisdael lived from 1628 to 1682 and both in his time and in the years subsequent his mastery of the fine art of landscape painting is considered by many art historians to be without rival.

The Dutch painter van Ruisdael not only painted vistas of landscapes in the raw, he also found majesty in villages, cities and rural scenes, seascapes, beaches, and the many rivers and bridges that seduced his sensitive eye: his numerous paintings reveal a wealth of closely observed naturalistic detail. Author Seymour Slive was Professor of Fine Arts and director of the Harvard University art museums and his depth of knowledge of not only van Ruisdael but also of the other Dutch painters of this time gives him a depth of knowledge and grace of writing that makes this truly a book to not only enjoy visually but to read as well.

This book coupled with Slive's other volume 'Jacob Van Ruisdael: A Complete Catalogue of His Paintings, Drawings, and Etchings' are the definitive tomes about Dutch landscape painting. Though this book was intended as a catalogue to the traveling exhibition of van Ruisdael's paintings and drawings, it is truly the preeminent text for the libraries of all art lovers. A nice companion piece to the world of ElfQuest.......2000-08-15

A richly drawn journey through the World of Two Moons, this collection of stories spanning thousands of years is a fine addition to the ever unfolding ElfQuest saga. "The Blood of Ten Chiefs" gives us an all too brief glimpse into the lives of the wolfriders before the familiar days of Cutter and his family. Like the best of the ElfQuest tales, these stories are well written, beautifully drawn and easily capture emotions without the need for excess dialogue and narration. The change in styles from story to story, artist to artist, can be distracting at first, but after the first few pages the reader is fully involved and captivated by each artist's unique vision of these wonderful elves and their magical world. Wendi Pini's creative absence, so terribly and painfully obvious in many of the other recent entries in the series, in no way diminishes this collection which features some of the finest work of the "guest" artists I have yet seen.

The stories are varied in style and scope, ranging from the visually stunning "Colors" which tells the epic tale of Timmorn and his struggle to reconcile his elfin and wolf heritage, to the whimsical and innocent "At the Oak's Root" which tells of a young Tanner and his misfit "wolf"-friend who is not a wolf at all.

Taken together the stories serve as an engaging glimpse at the legendary Ten Chiefs. Newcomers to ElfQuest should probably save this collection for last, as the stories assume that the reader comes to them with a full and comfortable command of World of Two Moons and its inhabitants.

I really enjoy Elf Quest comics, but they don't tell you much about what life was like before Cutter's tribe. This book provides you with exelent, well written background information, and detailed drawings of the elves and the incredible world of two moons. It tells you different stories about all the ten cheiftens that came before cutter.

In the twenty-one years since Wendy and Richard Pini introduced the graphic series "Elfquest", many readers have been curious about the background of Cutter and his Wolfrider tribe. The Pinis took a first step toward answering these questions by endorsing a fantasy-novel series, "The Blood of Ten Chiefs", which appeared throughout the 1980s; this collection of short prose stories brought to light major events in the lives of the chieftains who lived in the 10,000 years before we meet the elves for the first time. From 1993 to 1995, the spirit - and some of the substance - of these tales was brought into a new EQ graphic serial, "Blood of Ten Chiefs"; the first nine issues retold stories from the prose-books, the last eleven were original tales created specially for this new series. Book 9b reprints issues 1 to 7, and 10-11 (a two-part story).

In these episodes published here the storytelling is always of quality, and two of the tales - "Colors" (issue 1) and "The Broken Circle" (issues 10-11) are among the most memorable and significant in the series. "Colors" is the visual version of Richard Pini's tale about the struggle of the half-wolf Timmorn, the first Wolfrider chieftain, to reconcile the elfin and lupine sides of his soul. The difficulty of illustrating states of mind is handled beautifully here; profound as the prose is, the drawing is even more eloquent, particularly in the last few pages. Even the coloring-work, though reprinted only in black-and-white, yet adds to the total effect (a pleasant surprise in almost all the issues here is the graceful transfer of these originally colorized drawings). No issue in BoTC was less than solid, but this debut issue remains the best of the series.

Other stories include another carryover from the novels, "The Phantom of the Berry Patch" - a tale about the young Bearclaw (the father of Cutter); the grim, disturbing "Swift-Spear", an account of Two-Spear's madness and his resulting campaign against the humans; and the last story in this volume, "The Broken Circle", about young Skywise's discovery of a great relic of the High Ones, ancestors of the elves - and the havoc it wreaks with him and his tribe. Drawn in a completely different style from that of "Colors", it too is ambitious, far-reaching and thought-provoking - with a more unsettling conclusion.

The series - and this book - are, by design, a literary and artistic grab-bag, with contributions from several different artists, but the level of inspiration is high all around; about the only flaw is a certain blockiness of pencil-work in two of the stories ("Swift-Spear" admittedly being one of those two). As I have said, the art has transferred very well to this lower-price format (not always the case with other volumes in the EQ Reader's Collection).

To summarize: if the "Blood of Ten Chiefs" book had been a mere history of a tribe of elves, it would have been much less interesting. But because it focuses on the major events in the chiefs' lives - and, through them, illuminates their characters and times - these stories will bear repeated reading. Recommended.

A good book for background on ElfQuest, or as an intro........1997-06-30

This book is a history of ElfQuests first 10 chiefs, from Timmorn Yellow-Eyes to Bearclaw. This book was a "breaking in" period for the BOTC series. It focuses on the hardships of chiefhood. It offers insight into the difficult struggle many of the earlier chiefs experienced between the wolf-song and their elven sides.It also goes in depth about the beginning of the bond between Wolf-Riders and their wolf-friends If you're a long time fan of ElfQuest it answers questions you may have about th 10 chiefs. If you aren't than this is one of the best places to start

I like Bona's style.......2007-08-18

BUT, my editions of "Inside Oscar" and "Inside Oscar II" have a 3-year gap. The first book ends with the 1991 ceremonies and the second starts with 1995. What's up with that? Nonetheless either book is loads of fun, although I'm guessing the late Mason Wiley reined in his friend Damien Bona's snarkiness a few times. If the Oscars are your hobby, you'll love "Inside Oscar II" as much as you did the first book, and eagerly await "Inside Oscar III."

Appropriate continuation of Inside Oscar & Inside Oscar 10th Anniversary Edition, but I would have wished for more coverage of award years, say at least thru 2003 or 2004. It may be that the other info takes time to compile. It is excellent reference and any amount of waiting is worth it. Looking forward to its successor.

No Oscar surely for this book.......2006-03-10

Clearly pretentious (read the introduction and you'll discover that the author writes that the "academy members are primarily craftspeople who don't possess the critical faculties and scholarly approach of cinephiles ..." hummmm), this guy -who pretends to be a cinephile- has preferred to write here a total personal statement, mainly leftist (but sometimes you wonder...), and clearly mean, against the Oscar ceremony,and the people who vote for them and, those who receive the little golden boy(see in example how he prefers to quote only the bad reviews and not one good concerning Braveheart, which made, by the way, a confortable $210,409,945) rather than giving the reader an objective work, written with distance and elegance. Maybe he has never been able to enter the industry he seems to hate so much, and instead of getting an Oscar, prefers to spend time criticizing it with his typing machine, forgetting how much it's easier than... winning an Oscar or doing a movie.

A mixed bag.......2005-09-13

One of the great things about Inside Oscar 2 is how detailed it is about the movies that were not just nominated but were contenders. You really get a clear picture of the years 1995 to 2000. The writing is strong and there are some very funny passages in the book. One of the drawbacks is how opinionated the book is. In Inside Oscar there may be some brief sentences on how a some critic or critics disliked a movie. That was fine. Here you have Bona going on and on about how he disliked it and while sometimes that can be funny, I am not sure it follows the path set by Inside Oscar. Exceptions in Inside Oscar the years 1993 and 1994. The book is strong enough that it still is worth reading and owning even with that flaw.

Baseball has the World Series. Football, the Super Bowl. And movies have the Oscars. Even those of us who sneer at the assembly line product that fills theater screens for most of the year, smugly correct our less pretentious friends when they say "movies" instead of "film," and gag at some of the Academy's choices ("...and the Oscar goes to Roberto Benigni"), this annual behemoth of often startlingly bad taste is impossible to resist.

So, he's a little biased (okay, VERY biased), but for Oscar junkies, this book and its predecessor offer the best, most thorough coverage available, following each notable nominee and potential contender for the big prize through the entire awards season: from the National Board of Review's ranking of the year's best, to the various critic's awards and the Golden Globes, right through to Oscar night and its aftermath. There's also the complete list of winners and nominees for each category, as well as each year's presenters.

"Inside Oscar" and "Inside Oscar 2" are the definitive biography of Hollywood's biggest star - Oscar.

MP3 files raise a lot of questions about the rights of artists to be compensated for their work when making copies of their recordings is practically effortless. Bill Mann explains this challenge to the audio format and lots more in I Want My MP3, a very complete guide to MP3 audio and the communities that have grown up around it.

Much of I Want My MP3 has to do with software--the players, playlist managers, rippers, and encoders you need to convert and listen to music. Mann emphasizes the Sonique player, the AudioCatalyst ripper/encoder, and the MusicMatch Jukebox all-purpose application. He covers RealJukebox, XingMP3 Player, and RealPlayer G2 as well, but (in a break from his competitors) doesn't pay much heed to WinAmp. It's refreshing to see an author defend his personal software preferences, and also nice to read about sound-editing utilities that other books neglect completely. There's no substitute for experience!!.......2007-05-08

The explanations in the book are typical for "Dummies" books, where illustrations of methods accompany written instructions. Both are fairly easily understood even when logic, to me anyway, is a distant "second language." There are 80 "easy" puzzles that help develop skill with solving techniques; they get harder as you go along. Following these are 100 "tricky" puzzles that hone your skills to the point, theoretically, you can solve any Su Doku puzzle. To prove it, the book throws in 40 "tough" puzzles and 20 "diabolical" puzzles. I'm still working through the tricky puzzles and can't even imagine trying to solve the other two categories. Su Doku is entertaining and good exercise for the mind, especially as we grow older. "Dummies" is a good teacher and guide.

Lots of practice puzzles not much instruction.......2007-01-15

I thought this book would provide more tactics on solving but it really has lots of practice puzzles at 3 levels -- from easy to difficult.

Some serious flaws for a Sudoku Book (for Dummies).......2006-11-25

Allow me to explain how messed up are the levels of difficulty of the puzzles in this book.

There are computer programs that let you enter any Sudoku puzzle and then can tell you how hard the puzzle is by classifying it into certain levels of difficulty. A friend of mine who is very good at Sudoku got one such software, and that one uses the following difficulty levels: 1) Very Easy, 2) Easy, 3) Medium, and 4) Hard. There is a separate special level of difficulty called "Very Hard - Unfair", but that's reserved for Sudoku puzzles that require guessing / trial and error.

Sudoku puzzle number 3 in this book, supposedly an "entry level" puzzle according to the book, is ranked as "Medium" by the software mentioned above. Who considers a level of difficulty 3 out of 4 an "entry level"? And I do think these kinds of software have extremely powerful solving engines, making them capable of accurate assessments on the levels of difficulty of any puzzle.

This messed up level of difficulty in such an early exercise can be extremely discouraging for newbies, and on the other hand, in my opinion it is a sympton of little care and very poor editing when putting this book together.

Page 35 of the book (Spanish version) talks about one of the alleged "Beyond the obvious" strategies, a so called "Rule of the three numbers in three cells", or in more standardized terminology found online, the "Hidden Triples" strategy. In my opinion the strategy is very poorly exemplified and explained in the book. Any webpage describing it is much more enlightening and clear. And there are numerous other strategies very carefully explained in several online sources, which are not even mentioned in this book (not even in the Sudoku for Dummies vol 2).

The book has no alphabetical index at the end by the way, so you can't search for strategy names directly, or for key words, and there is a good reason for that: the book has really very little textual information. An alphabetical index would be ridiculous with so few entries. There is only a few pages of text at the beginning, 37 out of 342 pages, Spanish version again. Those text pages basically describe the only rule of Sudoku with some diagrams, and them attempt to explain very few basic solving strategies plus the poorly explained hidden triples. From the 37 first pages remove the first 12 which are mostly contents, intro, etc. So basically, 25 pages of text, in a small format book (7x5 inches). The bulk of the book is just exercises, and their solutions.

This book in general does not match the typical comprehensiveness I've seen in many For Dummies books.

What other reviewer indicates is also true, the paper this book was made of is pretty bad, doesn't stand erasing too well.

Conclusion: NOT recommended. Try other Sudoku books with less faults. And in any case, check the numerous Sudoku resources and compilations of strategies available for free online. This book in my opinion is not worth it. I really regret having purchased it.

Easy puzzles way too difficult.......2006-10-30

I read the full introduction, being new to sudoku. Thought I would have the tools from reading to certainly do the easy puzzles in this book, but found them way too brain-twisting. The puzzles were not a good followup teaching tool as way too difficult. I couldn't believe those puzzles were marked EASY even after reading a lot of these materials.

So I would have to rate this as not a good sudoku book for anyone but more advanced. Just my humble opinion.

Too Difficult For Beginners.......2006-06-24

I still have not solved the first easy puzzle. I plan to burn this book in my backyard with an elaborate ceremony. The very first easy puzzle requires the most advanced techniques to solve. I have not even looked at the others. Give me a few Walmart specials to start with, just to see if I like the hobby to begin with!!!!!
