In Manhattan Unfurled, architect Matteo Pericoli turns his affection for the city into two continuous and continuously enchanting pen-and-ink drawings of the skyline. This unusual book comes in a linen slipcase and opens accordion-fashion into a 22-foot-long panorama, the east on one side, west on the other. As critic Paul Goldberger writes in the accompanying booklet, "Pericoli has given us the Manhattan skyline in all its awesome chaos, but he has rendered it readable and manageable."
Book Description
Matteo Pericoli trained as an architect in Milan and then came to work in New York in 1995. His arrival preceded by just a few days the arrival of the biggest snowstorm of the decade, and the sense of the city in its wake–especially its silence–remained in his mind. He experienced similar feeling taking photographs of Riverside Drive from the Circle Line ferry, and decided to transpose them into a line drawing. It was then that he felt compelled to photograph the whole of New York’s shoreline profile–from Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and New Jersey (which he reached by motorcycle) — and make two continuous and continuously enchanting pen-and-ink drawing of Manhattan’s skyline.
Manhattan Unfurled is published in an elegant slipcase, and the drawings fold out, accordion-style, with the West on one side and the East on the other. An introduction by distinguished New Yorker architecture critic Paul Goldberger, who first wrote bout Matteo’s project in The New Yorker’s “Talk of the Town,” will accompany the drawing in a separate pamphlet. This book is both a wonderful New York City memento, perfect for gift giving, and an entirely unique work of art.
Customer Reviews:
Cool!.......2006-09-13
Very beautiful unfoldable view of Manhattan from both the East and the West side. Specially good is the utilization of black and white which makes it much more elegant.
This is stupid........2004-10-01
I bought this one. Love NY, love illustration, love books. The thing is: it's not really a book. You can't read it, because there are only illustrations. There are no pages, or a logical sequence. You can't even open it, unless you have 12 foot long pair of arms. You can't mount it on the wall, or you'll loose the other side. It feels really stupid to have this "book" on your hands. Because although you know you can't use it, you still got to have it.
Frozen in time..........2002-06-29
I bought this book so that my children could one day see the Manhattan skyline as I fell in love with it. It's fun to note the small details in the drawings--I think I notice something new each time I open it up.
Given the excellent presentation with the slipcase, etc., this book is an awesome gift for anyone who loves NYC. The artwork is solid, but not too formal, giving just the right feeling to the buildings. This book would also be a fun springboard for children to use to draw panoramic skylines of their own home towns.
this is a good book to give as a present.......2002-03-02
This book is charming, the cover and slipcase make it look special, the reader feels the book has to be very good to be housed in such a well crafted good looking presentation. But once you have looked at the line drawing and followed it from one end to the other you feel a little foolish having spent your money on something so wispy. And yet the book is charming, so it takes all its value when offered as a gift so that its owner can enjoy it without the remorse of the money spent..
makes a great gift.......2002-02-19
I bought Manhattan Unfurled as a gift, and that is how I rate it.
Personally, I was disappointed. I was expecting a more detailed work done is a stronger, classic pen and ink style. The the casual cartoon style however is charming and really does not detract from the impact of the book.
Manhattan Unfurled is best appreciated when unfurled. Anyone who adores Manhattan will love this book, stretching out the pages and oohing and ahhing over the vista.
Book Description
Matteo Pericoli began his spectacular drawing of Manhattan in 1998. Manhattan Unfurled was published in October 2001 and was quickly embraced by New York City and the entire country. In this new version for young people, the drawing is bound into two sections (East Side and West Side) in an unusual and eye-catching new format. Pericoli adds simple text, and hand-drawn labels, telling young readers how he came to create his drawing (the journey includes boat rides, a motorcycle, and hundreds of photographs). He also enourages kids to see—and draw—a place in a whole new way. “Draw everything,” he tells them, “and you’ll know a place as you never did before.” A wonderful tribute to Manhattan, to cities, and to thinking like an artist.
Praise for Matteo Pericoli’s Manhattan Unfurled (Random House adult trade):
“Pericoli has fixed a moment of the ever-shifting skyline, and done so with delicacy and authority.”—The New York Times Book Review
“Pericoli’s drawing is at once monumental and gentle . . . together the buildings seem almost to be swaying softly in a chorus line along the Hudson.”—The New Yorker
“Seen through [Pericoli’s] eyes, Manhattan takes on the quality of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are.”—Vogue

Customer Reviews:
Well done game........2006-02-19
This game accomplishes a lot; it is not too simle that it has little replay value. The different fleets are, indeed, distinctive. The game does not suffer from rules so complex to make play boring. I can't wait to try out the rules for campaigns, recreating certain eras in the Babylon 5 timeline--there's a good deal of stuff in just the box to keep you playing for a long time.
My first test game found it fairly quick to play. The game really captures the feel of the Babylon 5 genre, while presenting a fast paced game that is still challenging. Though Babylon 5 fans will be happy, anyone seeking a fun sci-fi starship combat game that strikes a good balance in detail and playability won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good Review.......2007-02-15
I'm in the middle of my first play, and read this as a refresher course. Learned a few things are new to me. One thing that I like about this book is that it's written in easy to read manner, and exercises really help you understand the techniques. Much better than the many books that focus on abstract theoretics that are hard to understand. I was pleasantly surprised by the writing samples from the students who took the author's class - some of them are very very good, and gave me confidence to know that the person who wrote this book taught them. Recommended.
A great introduction to the fundamentals of dramatic writing.......2005-02-04
I had Dr. Hall as a professor of playwriting for two semesters. He uses this book as the text for his introductory course. The exercises and examples are an excellent place for an aspiring playwright to start.
Dr. Hall introduces the ideas of conflict, character, action, etc. one at a time, and quite intensively. Following the exercises, each of your first three plays will focus on only one aspect of drama, leading to an all-inclusive one-act play; your first play.
Although I have much respect for Dr. Hall, and enjoyed working with him for over a year, I would still have to rate this book "4 Stars." The title is a little misleading. Like I mentioned, you will not have a full-length written by the end of the book, but several short sketches and a one-act play.
Were this called "Working Up to Your First Play," I'd give it a 5.
Awesome!!!.......2003-08-29
This book is superb for any aspiring playwright. The book is easy to comprehend and filled with wonderful exercises and examples to follow. Mr. Hall does a wonderful job of breaking down the elements of playwriting. Thumbs Up!
Playwriting by Action & Example.......2000-11-13
As Director of an International Playwrights Retreat, I have had opportunity to lead workshops in playwriting world wide. I have and value a large collection of playwriting books, and have borrowed exercises from many of them. I find Roger's opening exercise one of the best to get at the essence of what theatre is about. He has the student write a scene of action - no dialogue, no plot outline or character studies - just what we can see the character doing.
The book moves swiftly on to the next essential - conflict. By now, the reader may well have become a writer, as the book progresses through character, dialogue, writing from life or from other sources, and more - all leading to completing that first play before you even realized it.
The book is full of loads of useful exercises and examples. This at once opens worlds of possibilities to the creative mind, while providing achieveable writing results - all leading to an exploration of your own stories. It provides a context, a process, useful advice and practise . . . all in a very user friendly fashion. It's a great way to get a process started.
An OK book, helpful exercises........2000-04-08
This book is designed as a course, with exercises to do in each chapter. However, I wish I had read some of the other writer's books I have before buying this one. This makes a good second or third book once you have something that deals more directly with the dynamics of plot and it's relationship to character and setting. Especially lacking is an discussion of how audiences react to the emotional dynamics of each scene and act. McKee's "Story" is a great place to start. But Hall's book is a good place for the relative beginner who has some experience and wants to prime the pumps with a few exercises.

Book Description
Vincenzo Galilei, the father of the astronomer Galileo, was a guiding light of the Florentine Camerata. His Dialogue on Ancient and Modern Music, published in 1581 or 1582 and now translated into English for the first time, was among the most influential music treatises of his era. Galilei is best known for his rejection of modern polyphonic music in favor of Greek monophonic song. The treatise sheds new light on his importance, both as a musician who advocated a new philosophy of music history and theory based on an objective search for the truth, and as an experimental scientist who was one of the founders of modern acoustics.
