Book Description
Max Ernst (1891–1976) was a pivotal figure in the history of twentieth-century art. A leader of the Dada movement in Germany, he later joined the circle of writers and artists gathered in Paris around André Breton, the unofficial founder of the Surrealist movement. At the outset of World War II, Ernst fled Germany for the United States, first going to New York and eventually settling in Sedona, Arizona. Ernst returned to Europe in 1950 and continued to explore Surrealist imagery and methods throughout his life.
This important book accompanies the first retrospective exhibition of Ernst’s work held in the United States in thirty years. It examines his pioneering accomplishments in painting, collage, and sculpture and considers his use of the techniques of frottage, grattage, and decalcomania. Also featured are Ernst’s unique collage novels--narratives comprising disparate images culled from nineteenth-century engravings and combined in surreal, unsettling compositions. Leading scholars write on various aspects of Ernst’s life and art: Werner Spies on Ernst in America; Ludger Derenthal on Ernst and politics; Pepe Karmel on Ernst and contemporary art; Thomas Gaehtgens on Ernst and the old masters; and Robert Storr on the collage novels.
Customer Reviews:
Image quality is perfectly acceptable.......2007-02-08
The reproductions in this book are every bit as good as those in a similarly-priced volume from Thames & Hudson (isbn 978-0500976586) in terms of color fidelity, and far superior terms of selection and size. Additionally, reproductions are much better than in cheaper volumes from Taschen (978-3822813881) and Phaidon (978-0714828664). Maybe the reproductions in the monumental Oeuvre Katalog are superior, but at $2500 most of us will never aspire to own a copy.
Don't let other reviewer's gripes about color fidelity dissuade you from owning this marvelous volume.
Good retrospective, and good image quality........2007-01-07
This book is the most comprehensive collection of Max Ernst work. Having read the other reviews, I was concerned the print quality would be less than stellar. I find the print quality and color reproduction to be fine. No art book ever captures the full impact of the actual art, and color correction is one of the more problematic aspects of printing. MOMA and the Yale University did a good job with this book. This is a good collection of work and I wouldn't hesitate buying it again.
Ditto on the quality of the reproductions.......2005-06-14
I just saw the retrospective a couple of weeks ago as well and agree with the other reviewers: the exhibition is great, but the quality of the plates in the catalog is miserable.
Poor print quality.......2005-06-08
Having just seen the exhibit today (June 6 2005), and having perused copies of the book available at the exhibit, I concur that the color reproduction negates the highly informative text of this book.
A Magnificent Exhibit, but a mediocre Book.......2005-05-20
The exhibit of Ernst's work, which is still running at the Metropolitan Museum is a stunning tribute to an artist whose styles have influenced so many others over the course of the twentieth century. His style shifted and evolved so much over time that it is hard to believe the same artist that painted "Saint Cecilia" also painted "The Kiss" and "The Robing of the Bride." Unfortunately, the poor quality of the prints in the museum's book makes it a big disappointment, especially at this price. The text is alright, but the colors in the prints are radically darker and different in tone and do no justice to the original works.

Book Description
Looking for a great piece to work on in your scene study class? For an audition? You want something fresh, juicy, well-written -- something you haven't seen in every scene book. Give Chekov a rest and turn to memorable characters and scenes from the silver screen.
This remarkable anthology offers an incredible range of contemporary dialogues from the pens of the industry's finest talents -- scenes that pulsate with emotional life, scenes that live on their own, out of context. Blistering drama and caustic comedy are excerpted from the classic screenplays of James L. Brooks and Oliver Stone, and there are cutting-edge scenes from the Coen Brothers, Kevin Smith and Spike Lee. These are the scenes of today's films, a wealth of material to motivate any actor -- great scenes that will inspire and challenge you.
Within these pages, actors will find emotionally charged scenes from big studio megahits and small gems from acclaimed independent films. Featuring characters ranging from the larger-than-life to low-key introverts, 99 Film Scenes for Actors is a cornucopia of cinematic classics for actors eager for their close-up.
Customer Reviews:
A book for the non-public-school-types.......2005-08-30
Some of the scenes are a bit more adult. If you are buying this for student actors, pick and choose wisely. Some good movies are selected.
Great Book, Strangely Organised.......2002-01-20
Great, hard to find scenes, but not for monloluges. There are no monologues in this book.
GREAT Scenes, but Unoragnized.......2002-01-19
I found this book great if your doing two-person scenes, but if your looking for a monologue, don't come here. It's also not very organized.
A Good Selection Of Scenes.......2001-07-21
If you are into acting, want to make movies, write them or just watch them, this book is a lot of fun to flip through. Most of the scenes aren't from big "playing everywhere" movies so you don't have to worry about imitating someone else's performance. And with the few that are,it's a good exercise in how to make a charactor"yours" instead of DeNiro's (for example.) A worthwhile scene-book to own!

Be Prepared to meet the Challenges.......2007-10-01
With each new volume the avid scrabble player becomes more adept to meet the challenges of intercultural usages of words, making the competition involved in word building, more exciting and satisfying.
Thank you for a great and informative volume.
The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary.......2007-09-06
I have enjoyed my book. It has increased my game. The book is in fine condition.
I'm sorry, but Qwerty is NOT a word........2007-09-06
I'm sorry, but Qwerty is NOT a word. Neither is "Herstory" or a good number of other stoopid werds in this aggravating book that - unfortunately - somehow got isself endorsed by Scrabble officials. The definitions are slim and in many cases, nonexistent. I thought Scrabble was supposed to be played in English? well, there's lots of foreign words in here too. "Barneys"?!?! That's a name. Furthermore, we've been playing Super Scrabble (twice the scores, twice the tiles, and twice the time - but BIG fun), and another aggravating "feature" is that this book does not contain any words longer than 8 characters - so you can fuggeddabout adding onto "Further" to make "Furthermore" - cause its not in here! This book gives me an Incredulity (11 letters - not in there!) socre of 75% and an Aggravation (also 11 letters - and not in there either!) score of 99%. Every time we play I want to do a Farenheit 451 on the damn thang!!!!
To many two-letter foriegn words, e.g. xi, xu, qi.......2007-09-02
I got this book because I was heading out on a month-long trip with some people I didn't know and they said they liked to play scrabble. I figured this would be the easy way to end all potential conflict between on this subject. It did that pretty well, but in part because we all did not like many of the words in this book.
I was especially appalled with the words Xi, xu, qi and others like that that converted scrabble from a game of leveraging your vocabulary to one of remembering odd otherwise-useless trivia about strange words.
The next time I play scrabble I am going to request that we either eliminate 2-letter words, or stick to ones that would have been in common english usage throughout the 20th century.
scrabble players dictionary.......2007-08-31
i was very happy. item came in a timely manner and in good condition. thank you.
Amazon.com
If you're using the 1991 edition or the 1978 original, you're woefully behind the Scrabble-playing times. With more than 100,000 2- to 8-letter words, there are some interesting additions ("aargh," "aarrgh," and "aarrghh" are all legitimate now), while words they consider offensive are no longer kosher. Why subscribe to the Scrabble dictionary's changeable lexicon? Well, it ends the argument of whose dictionary to use, but the main reason is that it's the winner's dictionary, and why play Scrabble if not to win? Memorize those 2- and 3-letter words, and your Scrabble game becomes lethal.

Scrabble Players Dictionary.......2007-01-06
A wonderful tool for the scrabble players. Easy to use and handy to have
Mom's an avid Scrabble player.......2006-11-10
And she doesn't dare part with this to anyone. This is something she truly appreciates. The one thing that surprised her is that since it's in large print, the book is larger than the smaller print pocket version. She keeps it at home for safekeeping and enjoys it very much.
This book has been replaced by 4th edition!.......2006-10-12
Do NOT get this book -- which contains only the THIRD EDITION of the allowable Scrabble words. If you want the FOURTH EDITION, which is current up through its publication in late 2005, use this number to search Amazon's catalog: 0877796343 which will take you to the Fourth Edition, Large Print. For some reason, you can't find it by using words like "Scrabble Large Print" to find that edition -- you have to use the ISBN number.
Using the older edition might be okay if Amazon starts selling it at a discount; it's certainly good enough for friendly family games (in most families!) but won't get you where you need to go if you are playing competitively, and need the most current list of new coinages, acceptable 2-letter words, and q-words.
Large print scrabble dictionary.......2006-07-08
This dictionary is excellent to read and has definations that the smaller version does not have.
This book is out of date.......2005-10-22
I don't know why Amazon is still pushing the 3rd edition 4 months after the release of the 4th edition, which is much superior! The 4th edition is available on Amazon as well, but you have to look elsewhere for the large print (Walmart online has it).

Book Description
Harriet Beecher Stowe grew up in a family in which her seven brothers were expected to be successful preachers and the four girls were never to speak in public. But slavery made Harriet so angry she couldn't keep quiet. Although she used a pen rather than her voice to convince people of the evils of slavery, she became more famous than any of her brothers. She firmly believed that words could make change, and by writing Uncle Tom's Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe hastened the Civil War and changed the course of America history. "Readable and engrossing." -- The Horn Bookn"Fritz writes with verve and wit....Many kids will be stimulated to go on from here to find out more." -- Booklist (boxed review)
Customer Reviews:
Jean Fritz Makes a Masterpiece of the Beecher Family in Harriet Beecher Stowe and the Beecher Preachers.......2006-05-08
When I hear the word `biography', the first thing I think is another boring book of facts. But Jean Fritz keeps her reader's interested, talking in a conversational tone, while weaving the tale of Harriet Beecher Stowe's life during the Civil War. You watch the influential writer and her family grow - facing much hardship and happiness. I would give this book five stars. Anyone who is interested in life during the civil war - well, Harriet's life at least, should definitely read this book. I would recommend it to kids 10-15.
I recommend it!.......2003-06-03
Jean Fritz does a wonderful job with this short biography for young adults. It's easy to read and gives lots of information on Harriet's life without boring you or causing your brain to feel overstuffed. There are pictures as well. I recommend this book for everyone, and it was a big help in my research.
just what i needed.......2002-03-08
This book was recomended to my by one of my study books after I finished reading Uncle Tom's Cabin. This book gives you insightful information about Harriet and her family, but does not make it dull. It is not to long of a book perfect for those readers who don't want to waste time on extra information. This book made me want to study further on about Harriet Beecher Stowe and learn more about her. I highly recomend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about someone and their part of making history.

Great micro bio's on some unforgetable women........1998-09-02
Short on text, but long on photographs, this book suprisingly covers a century of women who have made contributions in many fields. I find the subheadings such as icons, divas, and notorious women intersting and was educated as well on some household names of which I knew not the history.
