Excellent book. My three year old loves the moon and this is a great nighttime story before bedtime.
Inspirational & Touching To The Heart............2006-09-11
The book entitled,"My Mother Gave Me The Moon" is an exquisite book to give your Mom. The book's content was written by Patrick Regan; I must say he has a wonderful gift as a writer. The illustrations were done by Becky Kelly. The watercolor pictures are charming, loving and endearing. Becky Kelly's art work is so magical in a way....and makes your heart smile. This book is the perfect gift to give your Mom for Christmas or for her Birthday....to tell her how special she is in your life.
Sweet and touching sentiments.......2005-02-11
Not only is this book appropriate as a gift for your mom, but I bought one for my two young daughters to keep for when they grow up. The gently soft pictures depict all the special moments shared between a mother and a child, from star gazing to trick or treating. I especially love the final page where we are reminded that our mothers have loved us "before anyone else" as when we were just tiny babies. Very appropriate for gift giving and keepsaking. We will treasure our copy.
The best Gift Idea!!!.......2004-09-15
I first read this book in the store and i cried my eyes out!!! (in a good way... girls you know what i mean!) It is a beautiful way to tell your mother just how importent she is to you. I think that every mother should get one as a gift!!

This book is so touching it will probably make you well up with tears at the thought of your own mom! Becky Kelly's art work is amazing! This would make a great Mothers Day or Birthday gift and is well worth the price...especially knowing that your mom will cherish this for many years! I also recommend any other book by Becky Kelly...especially Little Birthday Wishes. This one is great to give to girls of all ages!!

Book Description
For nearly fifty years, A. Aubrey Bodine was a Maryland institution, the photographer for the Baltimore Sunday Sun. Surveying the entire range of his work (there are ten thousand Bodine negatives in Baltimore's Peale Museum alone) Kathleen Ewing has selected sixty-eight photographs to show the photographer at his representative--and sometimes surprising--best. In her accompanying text, Ewing places Bodine's work in the romantic pictorial tradition, alongside the early work of Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Westen, Laura Gilpin, and others.
Bodine is perhaps best remembered for his photographs of the Chesapeake Bay and its watermen, but he was also a portrait photographer of consummate skill, capturing subjects as diverse as a group of Amish children and H. L. Mencken by his woodpile on his seventy-fifth birthday. His images of blazing Bessemer steel furnaces and shining barn roofs are equally striking. While Bodine's camera focused mainly on Maryland, he occasionally ventured beyond to show misty rooftops in Nuremberg or championship boxers. A. Aubrey Bodine, Baltimore Pictorialist is a book to be treasured by Marylanders rediscovering an old friend as well as by admirers of photography seeing for the first time the work of a fine American artist.

IMPRESSIVE.......2001-02-26
One Saturday afternoon about five years ago in Washington, DC, I wandered into the gallery of Kathleen Ewing and spent hours looking at the pictures of the photographers she represents. Prominent among them was A. Aubrey Bodine and his magnificent images of the people of the Chesapeake Bay. I'd never heard of Bodine but was completely captured by his pictures of the water and the people who live and work on it. Many of his pictures intrigued me because they look so much like stage settings with actors posed for the pleasure of the camera. But Bodine was also a portrait photographer, and one of great skill. This book, with beautifully reproduced photographs, an appreciation & biography by Ewing and a remembrance by Harold A. Williams who worked with Bodine on the "Baltimore Sun," will surely bring a new and appreciative audience for Bodine. One cannot help but be impressed with the fog rolling in on a Baltimore dock over two sleeping dogs in 1947, naked boys diving into the Patapsco River in a 1933 photograph which pays obvious homage to Thomas Eakins, or with the 1955 portrait of H.L. Mencken, among many, many others. Highly Recommended.
Pictures Beyond Words.......1998-08-06
I first saw the A. Aubrey Bodine book at the headquarters of the National Press Photographers Association in Durham, NC. Ken Cooke, director of photography for the Fayetteville Observer, and I were visiting with Charlie Cooper, the NPPA director. We decided to visit Charlie on our way back from Washington where we were coordinating a photo exhibit on Desert Storm at the Smithsonian. During our talk, Charlie picked up on a comment I made about timing, feeling, and heart coinciding with release of the shutter--classic Cartier Bresson "decisive moment" I guess. Anyway, Charlie then took me into the NPPA library where he showed me a book of someone's work he knew defined our discussion. It was the book "A. Aubrey Bodine : Baltimore Pictorialist, 1906-1970."
As NPPA director, Charlie has known and worked with many great photographers and Bodine was one of them. Ken also became very excited having known Bodine from years of working in photojourn! alism and having a sincere appreciation for Bodine's work. I, as the younger man, had never heard of Bodine until that day, but I will always be grateful to Charlie Cooper for introducing me to this book. To me, Bodine defines seeing the day-to-day world with heart and moment as I believe very few photographers today achieve. He is not well known, but his work is something to cherish. I feel very fortunate to have a copy (Charlie was kind enough to send me one). It is a book that every student of photography and community photojournalism should see, feel, and own.

Book Description
L ong considered the bible for storytellers, Aristotles Poetics is a fixture of college courses on everything from fiction writing to dramatic theory. Now Michael Tierno shows how this great work can be an invaluable resource to screenwriters or anyone interested in studying plot structure. In carefully organized chapters, Tierno breaks down the fundamentals of screenwriting, highlighting particular aspects of Aristotles work. Then, using examples from some of the best movies ever made, he demonstrates how to apply these ancient insights to modern-day screenwriting. This user-friendly guide covers a multitude of topics, from plotting and subplotting to dialogue and dramatic unity. Writing in a highly readable, informal tone, Tierno makes Aristotles monumental work accessible to beginners and pros alike in areas such as screenwriting, film theory, fiction, and playwriting.
Customer Reviews:
A solid work.......2007-09-25
[4.5 stars]
The oft-stated maxim of dramatic storytelling, everyone who is anyone in screenwriting recites, is to read Aristotle's Poetics. The problem? The original work in Greek is not what one would call bedside reading; the English translations of the original are almost as bad.
So what is a budding screenwriter to do if, as suggested, he wanted to understand the underpinnings of drama without having to learn and understand ancient Greek and all the arcane references in the Poetics? Well, that budding screenwriter buys and reads the new book by Michael Tierno. It's small enough that it could be light reading; each of its 33 chapters are easily digestible, but be not fooled! It's filled with tremendous information that, if properly understood, will help a writer, any writer, tell a gripping story.
Some of the reasons I gave it a four-and-a-half star rating instead of the full five are the same as I would give the original Poetics: the language is staid and a little difficult to assimilate for the modern understanding. Tierno does a good job of interpretation, but even then, there are some hard bumps that will give the reader pause. Tierno also tries hard to tie all the chapters into a smooth narrative, but again, there are some bumps: I don't, for example, see why chapter 29 (The Non-Linear Soul of Quentin Tarantino) was added as it seems incongruous without useful information not already covered earlier.
The other star-reducing problem is the seeming out-of-context quotations from the Poetics that require close reading to see their appropriateness, although for the most part the author does a fine job of showing precisely that. It's just a slight impediment to the flow. Very slight.
That said, here's my recommendation to obtain the maximum benefit out of this book: read the Poetics first. After which, rely on Tierno to provide the necessary interpretation; a job, as I stated earlier that he does quite well.
In summary, this is a good book. With close reading, perhaps even re-reading, it is capable of energizing your stories in the way the original work by (as the tagline of the book says) The Greatest Mind in Western Civilization does. This book is definitely barely-hidden gold that is easy to pass over. That fact it's not too expensive or overly ponderous in tone only adds to the value. High recommendations.
Postscript: The book has the author's website on the back. As of the date of writing this review, it's just a placeholder. Perhaps if the author eventually gets around to putting something useful up, he'll receive the full five stars!
Aristotle Lite.......2007-01-04
Having read the original "Poetics" several times, this rendition of the master is very welcome. It touches on the salient points and how it relates to screenwriting. Good use of examples. My only suggestion is that he could have given us a little more depth.
A great way to introduce Aristotle's Poetics........2006-08-10
If you are (or want to be) a serious screenwriter, you probably already know names like Robert McKee, Syd Field, Linda Seger, David Trottier and even David Bordwell...
The good thing about Mr. Tierno's book is that it goes back to the one fundamental text who, 2300 years before the birth of Cinema, already thought about many of the things all other screenwriting authors still talk about - what do we do in order to achieve higher drama?
And it is surprising how fresh Aristotle still sounds today, according to Mr Tierno's reading. Even if we consider that the object of Aristotle's thought was not the Cinema, but the Classical Greek Theatre - or the mimetic form of representation.
In fact, there is nothing new about Aristotle (or Cinema, or narrative, or screenwriting) here besides the fact that Mr. Tierno does an accurate reading of the great greek thinker and explains many of his key concepts.
In a nutshell, this book is an excelent reminder of how important, necessary and universal, good drama can be. Also it is a great reminder that screenwriting is a natural heir of most of storytelling's past traditions.
It is also a proof that screenwriting is an art form by itself.
Concise dramatic instruction.......2006-03-28
This book is useful for fiction writers as well as screenwriters. The author interprets Aristotle's ideas and suggestions and then renders them with examples into language applicable to modern drama. Many of Aristotle's original ideas are quoted and have timeless power. For example: "Beginners succeed earlier with Diction and Characters than with the construction of a story."
Tierno relates how the parts of a modern script evaluation (Log Line, Brief, Plot Summary, Comments, Idea, Story, Character, Dialogue, and Production Values) mirror Aristotle's examination of the same elements. I especially liked how the film "Gladiator" was used for the example of "the mistake in a hero's reasoning, leading to the hero's subsequent related misfortunes."
The short length makes the book a fast but powerful read.
It really helps to understand screenwritng concepts.......2003-11-06
This book has not only helped me to understand the somewhat complex art of dramatic stroy telling - but it has helped me to help others. Recently working on a documentaty project with a first time director, this book allowed him to internalize and distill his thoughts into a more cohesive vision, that was readily translatable to an audience. I would reccomend this book to any one who wants to gain insight and understanding to "the movies."

Customer Reviews:
Book Doesn't come apart with use.......2007-09-06
This is a well-made paperback book. It has easy, intermediate, and advanced puzzles. I found the advanced ones not to be so difficult that it took the pleasure out of the game. I liked the whole presentation of the book. Nicely made and laid out!
Not for beginners.......2007-03-01
I have done several Sudoku Books and this one is NOT for beginners, or low intermediates. After the pages 1-7 it gets really hard then you have to cheat!!
The perfect challenge for any sudoku enthusiast - highly recommended!.......2006-09-03
This is definitely one of the more challenging sudoku books I've tried. The puzzles start off fairly easy, but become almost impossible to solve by the end. The book is divided into sections for easy, medium, and hard puzzles, and within each section puzzles are also ranked on a difficulty scale from one to five. I really enjoyed the challenge here, and still have not solved most of the harder ones. One particularly nice thing about this collection is that the grids are fairly large, so there's plenty of room to pencil in options and notes as you work, which is definitely a must for the more advanced puzzles! In addition, all of the solutions are provided at the back of the book, so you can check your work. I'd highly recommend this collection to any sudoku enthusiast. However, I will offer a word of warning to those who have already enjoyed this book and are looking for others like it - not all of Tammy Seto's books are the same! I've also purchased her book "Sudoku Fever," which turned out to be patronizingly easy. Even the rankest of beginners would become bored quickly. I have not, however, tried her book "Sudoku Mania," so am not sure where that falls on the difficulty scale.
Review of Sudoku: More than 200 Fun and Challenging Japanese Number Puzzles by Tammy Seto.......2006-08-22
I am currently completing the puzzles in this book and so far, am enjoying it.
Pretty but not useful.......2006-05-09
This book of puzzles is the most frustrating one of many I have bought. The numbers are put into pretty design arrangements that have nothing to do with the difficulty of the pattern. Some labeled beginner are quite difficult, while at least one labeled intermediate had only one step logic involved. I like to know the difficulty level before I begin so I can choose one appropriate for the time available and challenge that I am in the mood for. You have no idea with this book. There are many good books available, no reason to buy this one.

Great for a Beginner or Kid!! .......2006-01-10
I started doing Sudoku five days ago when I picked up this book from Borders, and already I have learned to do the puzzles in this book easily and quickly - even the so-called advanced ones. I enjoyed it immensely for learning, and the book contains a lot of puzzles, but I am ready for whatever the next step is in Sudoku, and hopefully reviews of other Sudoku books will help me sort that out.
I have three kids, however, who are working on a kid's Sudoku book. I am saving this book for them, as it would be a very good next step after they master the puzzles in their kid's book.
Sudoku - lots of puzzles - not much challenge.......2006-01-04
The main problem is that the difficulty range is very small and the assigned difficulties don't seem to have much to do with how hard the puzzles are. One error that I found - Beginner #52 has multiple solutions. But there are about 207 puzzles, which is a lot - and the size is decent - not tiny newspaper images.

Book Description
Television comedy traces its roots to vaudeville, radio and film, from which it developed its own unique forms to make the audience laugh. These styles became industry standards: the so-called traditional forms of variety shows and situation comedies. In recent years modern comedy-nighttime variety shows, adult programs, stand-up acts, British imports, parody shows, for instance-have gained increasing acceptance, with these innovative forms bringing an artistry often lost under the traditional formats. These thirteen essays trace the history of television comedy from the genius of Jack Benny, Sid Caesar, Milton Berle, Ed Sullivan and Lucille Ball to the antics of ALF, Martin Mull, Julie Brown and the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Emphasis is placed on the development and artistry of the genre as evidenced in shows such as Dobie Gillis, Green Acres, Newhart, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Bewitched.
