5 out of 5 stars Kliban over all.......2005-10-21

The B. Kliban book, "Never Eat Anything Bigger Than Your Head," was the most original, funniest and thought-provoking cartoon series that I've ever seen. For humor value I also like New Yorker cartoons, but they are locked in a kind of workplace suburban conventionality that seems less original than Kliban, and anyway they use multiple authors for their body of work.

A "predecessor" of Gary Larsen? Having had Kliban's book and then seeing Gary Larsen's series, Larsen's work is clearly derivative of Kliban, sort of like J.K. Rowling coming after J.R.R. Tolkein.

The book is still funny and mind-stretching, and my original 70s paperback copy is falling apart, so I'm taking the trouble to track down another copy.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned this book is at the top of the heap of original cartoon humor and actually represents a new way of looking at everything in terms of parody from the early 70s on. Buy it if you dare.

5 out of 5 stars STRANGE BUT GREAT!!.......2005-10-07

This is very funny stuff. I remember getting this book in college. It's still just as funny or perhaps more funny today!!

5 out of 5 stars Soup to Nuts.......2005-03-12

B. Kliban is a pre-Larson cartoonist with some similar traits. Kliban is much more cerebral, however. My college roommate had this book and "Tiny Footprints" and I was hooked. "Soup to Nuts" is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Contaminated Pork Bldg........2003-02-08

Kliban was definitely one of the best. I discovered his work in used book stores and was hooked the moment I saw it. What started was a manic tour to find all of his books. Next was convincing everyone I knew at the time that Kliban was a genius. Some bought, some flinched.

Kliban's work would have no home in today's "funny pages." It's entertainment for adults (he began his career with Playboy magazine) and his work is scattered with obscenity and nudity. None of it is gratuitous. One thing that heavily separates Kliban's work from other cartoonists' is its depth. Social commentary mixed with metaphysics mixed with surrealism. When he's funny he's gut-wrenchingly funny. When he's profound he's deeply profound (not many cartoonists' work can be called 'profound'). He also uses the pun in a way I've never seen before. He either goes over the top and makes you gag(e.g., "Why do you hang out with that sadist?" "Beats me!"), or is very subtle and hilarious (e.g., A buffalo saying "I never met an Indian I didn't like, with the possible exception of Kahlil Gibran"). His work is nonsensical, absurd and funny.

This book includes classics such as "The Birth of Advertising", "Patron Saint of Crullers", "Contaminated Pork Bldg", "The Hairy Family Singers", "Continuous Eye Persons", "Philosophers Looting a Small Town", and many others that defy description.

Kliban's closest equivalent in cartooning must be Argentina's Quino. If you're a fan of Kliban, most likely you'll appreciate Quino's work (though some knowledge of Spanish is helpful).

Sadly, a lot of Kliban's work is difficult to find these days. His "safer" books like "Cat" are readily available, but his more edgy work seems to have nearly vanished. Perhaps someday if mainstream humor revisits off-the-wall absurdism Kliban's work will be appreciated for what it was.

5 out of 5 stars Never Eat Anything Bigger Than Your Head.......2002-08-09

This was my roommate's book and I read it back in the 70's. It was so hysterical we used to laugh until we thought we'd wet ourselves. I sometimes think about funny cartons/sayings and I'm still laughing about it 20+ years later. I'm amazed I remembered the name of the book, but I did, so here I am. I'm ordering it today. I'm going to keep it at work, and when things get me down, I'll look at the picture of the "Wonder Weiner Works" and I know it'll put a smile on my face.

    Book Description

The instructional guides in this series help the beginning artist find the answers that the majority of painting books fail to provide: how to create and avoid the little details that can either destroy a painting or make it into a masterpiece. Included are techniques for painting reflections on water in the style of the great masters, for creating textures, for putting life and movement into a work, and for beginning a long and fruitful relationship between the amateur artist and the world of art.

This instructional guide for creating models that reflect figures as they are in the real world offers techniques for using materials in addition to the paint itself to make sloping surfaces and textured areas. Collages, pastes, paint mixed with sawdust and powdered marble, plaster, silicon, strips of cloth, organic elements, and everyday objects are but a few of the techniques offered for creating the three dimensions that are part of the visual world.

5 out of 5 stars Painting WITH textures.......2003-04-15

Watch out ! This book is about painting WITH textures and volume (i.e. painting with latex, plaster, silicon, organic elements, paper collage, etc.) and not about HOW TO paint textures and volume (for example, how to paint the various textures like glass, wood grain, porcelain, gold, etc. i.e. the textural details that enhance a painting).
As I expected the latter, it is difficult for me to accurately rate this book.
This being said, this book seems pretty complete to me covering subjects like how to use sgraffito on a glass surface, pasting with oil paints and acrylics, making a relief collage using tissue paper, creating texture with organic elements, marble powder, sawdust or pieces of cloth and using the encaustic technique with oil painting.
It is well-structured and pleasant to read. The different techniques are explained by step-by-step demonstrations and tips about the materials and instruments, making you eager to try out this (new) approaches.
Even though I'm not an expert in this specific matter of painting with texture, still I may judge the quality of this book as compared to the tons of other art instruction books I've bought over the internet, in terms of presentation, style, illustrations and structure and that's why I give it a five-star. The book was originally written in Spanish (Pintando texturas y volumen).

What ever happened to this Author? I wish he kept going on producing books. I was lucky and found this book on Ebay, knowing much about it I bought it because the cover looked very interesting. To my surprise I eneded up loving this book and I wish there were more like this and a continuation on this topic. So if your lucky to find this book used BUY IT

This book will help really break down texturing to get photo real looking 3D results!

5 out of 5 stars GET IT, YOUR MODELS WILL THANK YOU!.......2003-06-24

This is a fantastic book for getting you started with realistic skin texturing. Over the years, I've collected numerous books on the fine art of skin texturing. This is one of the finest and complete book around. Though I do combine this with some other techniques, this book brought a lot to the table. It also has a great section on eyes! The book is easy to follow with tons of big pictures with short paragraphs. My biggest let down was the fact that they were going to come out with a book on clothing painting. Unfourtunatally, it was cancelled.

1 out of 5 stars Bill does indeed strike again. Much to buyers regrets.......2003-02-02

What a waste of money. It's barely worth the paper it is written on.

There are better and more comprehensive tutorials on the web for free than the nonsense printed here.

Fair warning, save your money, don't be "Fleminged".

5 out of 5 stars Realistic texturing class for the rest of us.......2002-11-28

Where was this book, when I needed it for my thesis. lol

The whole book is a do-it-yourself class on its own. The steps are laid out very clearly, how you use photoshop for doing textures. I really like the how the book included the character files in obj, dxf, c3d, lwo and 3ds. So that anyone could view the model in any program they use. The book covers the face, the eyes, the gums, the tongue and the teeth in excellent detail. I went throught the book twice with every page being extremely helpful.

What did this book do for me as a Maya user, it broke me away from methods I had learned at RIT and suggested more simpler ones without making bumpmaps in the hypershade. Now you can do it all in one texture, and it looks amazing.

This book has been a great edition to my 3D collection. I look forward to more of his work in the future. Whats volume 2 going to be about?

5 out of 5 stars finally a book that covers organic textures step by step.......2002-09-01

With a million and one books on 3D model creation its good to finally see one that covers the other half of the equation -textures!

Bill takes you step by step through the process of texturing his Freaky Frank model, unravelling the mystery of organic texture creation with ease.

All required files are included (unlike the first print release)
although I found it a little strange that the cover photo was created in Deep Paint, while the tutorials use Photoshop and the CD includes a demo copy of BodyPaint. Not that it matters I suppose as any paint program can be used with the book provided you have a basic understanding of your software.

Its a great read and offers lots of hints and tips for realistic textures. I look forward to volume two of this unique series.

          Book Description

Consolidating major figures and film movements into their decade of greatest influence or prestige, this “no-nonsense” book offers a generously illustrated, concise, and very readable history of fiction movies with an emphasis on American cinema. Eclectic in methodology and written in a plain English style that audiences can relate to, it examines the full scope of traditional film history and criticism, viewing film as both an art and an industry– as it mirrors popular audience values, social ideologies, and historical epochs. Film discussions include titles such as Forrest Gump, Jurassic Park, There's Something About Mary, Face Off, the Lion King, Saving Private Ryan, Good Will Hunting, Pulp Fiction, Choosing Amy, The Piano, Menace II Society, Sweet Hereafter, The English Patient, Sense and Sensibility, Shakespeare in live, The Full Monty, The Crying Game, Life is Beautiful, and like Water for Chocolate. For anyone who enjoys going to, and thinking about, the movies.

1 out of 5 stars An awkward approach in the new era of film studies........2007-03-30

I do not think this book was as good as some of the other textbooks I have reviewed for use in my History of Cinema class. The one reason is that the book deals with history through an auteur approach, detailing each filmmaker. The current focus is typically a hybrid approach; using historical details, the business of film, and theory to teach the subject matter. Filmmakers are used as ways to interpret the consequences of that history. I was also surprised when a few major films were left out of the book, mostly foreign lesser known filmmakers. But how can you not discuss Rashomon when discussing Akira Kurosawa? This should not be a top choice for college level film classes.

4 out of 5 stars Very well organized, well beyond your average reviewer..........2002-08-23

I just finished checking out this book. Very well layed out: breaks down the history of film in a decade-by-decade fashion, further distinguishing american films from international cinema (which I particularly found a little pointless, but...) In general, I found the author's criteria to be well in line with those of a "smart" (or critical, if you may) moviegoer. Not a table book or a bed-side book, however: it is a textbook for a college-level film class.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable film resouce.......2000-12-27

A survey of both American and International cinema, the text provides a thoroughly illustrated history of film ranging from the early works of the Lumiere brothers to the recent Magnolia. Authored by an English professor, the writing is organized, concise, and most importantly, interesting.

Upon finishing the book, I garnered a certain respect and appreciation for film and filmmakers, something that had not occurred to me with others texts. For example, it details the struggle of the German cinema during the time of the Third Reich. The reasons such acclaimed artists such as Fritz Lang and Leni Riefenstahl were being exploited for their abilities, and conversely how other talents were being suppressed for their rebellion. As I read more, I learned how political figures and movements often parallel cinematic output, and the awesome power that the silver screen can have on influencing the masses.

I highly recommend Flashback to anyone who has even the slightest interest in film. The copious amounts of photographs breaks up the text nicely, and there is certainly something for everyone.

3 out of 5 stars A good read, but not the real bio this great artist deserves.........2007-08-15

I knew going in that this book was limited in what it had to offer. It basically gathers all kinds of info from the rock mags and press and binds it together as a "bio". In effect, it smacks of non-insider journalism, which is exactly what it is, since it's unauthorized.

Where Blandford's book excels, sort of, is describing Polly Jean Harvey's early years growing up in the country outside of Yeovil. Her parents, big music junkies, would often play Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica" through Sunday lunch, which Polly said "made her feel ill", and also Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon", which "made her cry". There is also good detail of her early band experiments with Automatic Dillami, and how she met collaborators like John Parish early on.

The Polly that emerges from this cobbled-together writing is a fiercely independent and collaborative spirit, that probably works too hard and enjoys her privacy. That committment to privacy, while probably making her work superior, also means that we probably will never have a real biography of PJ. This edition deteriorates far too much into "album, tour; album, tour" reports, and goes right up to the eve of "Uh Huh Her"'s release.

So, PJ fans, buy it and read it; I advise you that you won't be able to put it down. Just don't expect any new revelations about this wonderful and enigmatic artist.

3 out of 5 stars Finally a book about PJ!.......2006-03-28

              Unfortunately, this book is spotty.

The early stuff seems well-researched. Perhaps the people she associated with then are not famous so they're more likely to tell all those cool stories. Perhaps famous people are tight-lipped, hoping for the same treatment. I'm just guessing, though, I have no idea.

The really interesting stuff (and a much bigger proportion) covers her early career (before and during the Dry period). After that, it seems mostly written from interviews and magazine articles.

I was thrilled with the chapters on the early stuff, but by mid-way this thing ran out of gas. If the author could've kept it up this would be a 5 star. Peace.

2 out of 5 stars No New Info for PJ Fanatics.......2006-02-15

This book is basically a gathering of articles and interviews regarding the singer/songwriter PJ Harvey. PJ Harvey was a big influence on music in the 90's and inspired a lot of the styles in artists that are around today like the yeah yeah yeahs.

I found that this book did not delve very far into her life story and this is probably not the author's problem but because PJ Harvey is a private individual. I am not a die-hard fan and I did not read any information that I did not already know. The book is short, easy reading.

If you are a collector of PJ Harvey related items then you should still buy this book for your collection. If you are just looking to read more about her, this is probably not the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Buena opción.

I hope this book will stand as a testament to her talent, a tribute that even she may accept".

4 out of 5 stars some good information, but prob. not for diehard fans.......2005-10-17

i enjoyed this book, but this def. isn't the definitive biography (although as there aren't any others we'll just have to make do w/ this one). diehard fans prob. already know the vast majority of this info. also, i def. noticed several glaring inaccuracies ("nickel under the foot" was not written by PJ, for example), so i wouldn't believe everything he says, esp. since the vast majority of his quotes come from previously published magazine articles and interviews. it's nice that all that info is organized, though you could prob. find a lot of the interviews reprinted online.

as is often the case, the book oftentimes is little more than "and then she released this album, did this tour, put out this single, had a song on this soundtrack, collaborated with so-and-so", esp. near the end, but the first few chapters about her early life and bands are worthwhile. in any case, a book like this is a good checklist if you're looking for PJ-related tracks you don't already have and great excuse to re-listen to all PJ's albums and re-evaluate and re-appreciate a great artist's career. as an added bonus there's a good discography and bootlegography.

                  Book Description

From Edward R. Murrow to "Sixty Minutes" and CNN, the television news correspondent has become a fixture of American journalism in the latter half of the twentieth century. The correspondent's role has changed, however, as centralized control, changing technology, "infotainment," and profit margin have influenced the way that television networks operate and television news is reported.

In spite of the flood of literature dealing with the American television networks, the evening anchors, and prime-time personalities, little has been written about the "the foot soldier of network news." Live from the Trenches fills that gap, providing the first examination of television news correspondents and their work, with much of the analysis coming from the correspondents themselves.

                  The correspondents:
Jim Bittermann, a former ABC Paris correspondent, has been the CNN Paris correspondent since 1996. He received a National News Emmy for his coverage of the 1988 Sudan famine.
Chris Bury, correspondent for "Nightline" since 1993, has covered foreign and domestic stories from Waco to Whitewater.
Michael Murrie, after a dozen years in television news at KSDK in St. Louis, is an associate professor and director of the Telecommunications Master's Program for the Department of Radio-Television at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
Roger O'Neil, NBC News Denver bureau chief and correspondent since 1983, was the lead reporter for NBC during the Oklahoma City bombing trial of Timothy McVeigh.
Walter C. Rodgers, bureau chief and correspondent in Jerusalem, joined CNN in 1993 as the Berlin correspondent. Prior to joining CNN, he worked for ABC for twelve years.
Marlene Sanders broke barriers for women throughout her career and has won three Emmies. As a correspondent at ABC News in 1964, she was the first woman to anchor a prime-time network newscast.
George Strait is the primary ABC News correspondent for medical and health news. Among his many awards are the Alfred I. duPont Award and Gold Medal Award from the National Association of Black Journalists.
Ed Turner is CNN's first editor-at-large. Based in Washington, he represents the CNN News Group globally.
Garrick Utley joined CNN in 1997 after thirty years covering more than seventy countries for ABC.
