Good for helping kids learn the story.......2003-01-13

before they go to see the ballet. I work in public schools, and the second grade usually goes every year. I look for things to help me with my special needs studentst to get excited about the upcoming ballet. Tools such as these stickers help bring to life the story and make the experience more enjoyable.

This is stickers inside a book with a few sets, where kids can stick and re-stick the stickers. I thought my 6-year-old niece would love it, especially after we saw the ballet, but she got bored with it rather quickly.

Tempus Fugit: Time Flies examines time as both natural phenomenon and cultural construct, as manifested in works of art dating from 900 BCE to the present. Essays by 23 scholars explore the relativity of time.

One section of the book looks closely at time as a dominant concern in 20th-century art. From Einsteinian space-time, Bergsonian subjective duration, and Freudian non-linear dreamtime, with their respective impacts upon art of the early century, to late-century involvements with critical theory and time-based art (performance, video, and electronic intermedia), this century's reinvention of time and altered notions of history are considered.

A second section explores the meanings of time embodied in works of art from 12 world cultures. Assyrian eternal time, Medieval European apocalyptic time, Indian cosmic, cyclical time, African ancestral time, Native American episodic temporality, and the complex calendrics of the Maya are among the subjects explored. The final section addresses time from the perspective of those charged with rescuing and protecting works of art from the ravages of time: art conservators. Both the creative time of the artist and the patina of time acquired by the art object are documented.

This was recommended for me! I had not thought of Ava sense I was quite young (fifties) and I enjoyed remembering when she was the most beautiful girl in the world to me. A fun and inexpensive weekend!

Great research - sad story.......2007-07-06

From all accounts, Ava Gardner was the most luminous goddess to ever hit Hollywood. If you make it through all 560 pages of this book, you'll have heard "she was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen," about as many times ... it seems everyone Lee Server interviewed was blinded by her beauty.

Server interviewed people from Ava's childhood all the way through to those who knew her at the end of her life. Men and women alike were startled by how beautiful she was.

However, once you get past the beautiful face, a sad pattern develops. A North Carolina backwoods girls, Ava was discovered when visiting her sister in New York.

Fame came fast and furious. Immediately after hitting Hollywood, she was signed to a contract and thrown into the life of a starlet.

She saved herself for marriage to Mickey Rooney, holding onto the morals she learned at home. After they divorced, however, she became quite the 'girl about town,' conquering everyone from cabana boys to Howard Hughes with that fabulous face.

She married Arte Shaw, who humiliated her for her lack of education. So she read. A lot.

She married Frank Sinatra, who left his wife and three kids at home to be with her.

She romanced all of her leading man, if Sever's accounts are to be believed. She loved bullfights and bullfighters.

Along with romance, Ava fancied alcohol. Lots of alcohol. She cruised and boozed all over Sunset Boulevard and took her appetite abroad when filming in foreign countries. She was lusty, loud and large ... for as long as her beauty lasted.

Once the alcohol and late nights began to ravage her face, she retreated to Spain and Mexico and then, finally, London, where she lived in relative obscurity until her death.

I closed the book feeling more than a little sad for Ava Gardner. Maybe it would have been better if she had stayed in the hills of North Carolina. But, then, the world would have missed seeing "the most beautiful woman in the world."

"A half F-word fox in a forest fire".......2007-06-27

That was how former husband Mickey Rooney described Ava Gardner, a person of enormous appetites that she seldom denied herself. Lee Server is a fine biographer but a bio can only be as interesting as the subject...now here was a fascinating subject. Plucked from obscurity in one of those old Hollywood stories, a Talent Scout in NY, sees a picture of North Carolina native Ava Gardner and in a wink she has a MGM contract and men circling her 24 hours a day. Almost everyone in this book describes how truly stunning a creature she was. A reluctant actress, she was the premier 50's Sex Goddess and all you have to do is see her in one of her many films, to realize that she earned that title easily. Married, divorced, married...didn't matter to her, Ava may have stated that, "love was nothing", but it didn't stop her from seeking it out. Good summer read.

Exceptionally Well-Written, but a Sad Story Just the Same . . ........2007-06-19

Being a fan of film noir and mid-century American movies, I've read many film star biographies and autobiographies from that era. Compared to many other life studies, Lee Server's version of Ava Gardner's life is exceptionally well written and quite a page turner--you won't be bored. It is also a sad and empty story of a life not well lived, at least the way Server gives us the facts. Although what Server provides is well-detailed and supported by names and places, it becomes, in essense, the same story over and over: parties, drinking, sexual partners. I kept hoping for a bit more insight on Gardner's state of mind or her dreams of a life. It never surfaced, but maybe it was never there.

Good reference, unbalanced presentation.......2007-01-03

This book is a must-have for anyone serious about audio technology and sound reproduction. Almost all imaginable subjects are covered, making it an excellent reference.
The problem with this book, though, is that it is a collection of articles ("chapters") written by various experts around the world. It appears however that no effort was made by the editor to get spread and depth of content in line. For example, the chapter on transformers is very detailed, with good references at the end, yet the chapter on amplifiers is very weak and gives no references whatsoever.
Also, this book appears to be more written towards the recording community, and covers only a few topics relative to live sound reinforcement. Finally, there is virtually no discussion on sound effects processors.

Simply the Best Book on Audio.......2003-09-21

This is the best book on audio I have seen. It covers a broad range of topics in great depth.

The book goes into great detail about the following areas:
a) human hearing and calculating the acoustic properties of rooms
b) PCB-level electronic components
c) system level components
d) storage media
e) bringing all of the above together into applications

The book assumes the reader has a good foundation in electronics but explains concepts in a very unpretentious way. It's nothing like reading a scholarly journal where you constantly have to look at other articles and review textbooks to understand. If you understand the basics of electronic circuits you will understand this book without consulting other textbooks.

Every audio topic I can think of is explored in this book. If you work on anything related to audio you absolutely should not be without this reference.

The most authorative work I have seen........2003-04-07

I have been playing around with amplifiers and recording equipment for a while now - never had formal education in audio engineering, but I do have some electronic background. This book has helped me a lot in refining my recording techniques, my audio system itself and furthered my understanding of audio systems from microphone placement to cabling, speaker placement, phono cartridge alignment to name but a few. Whatever subject I sought advice on, this book has so far provided me with the answers. I would go as far as saying that whatever this book does not cover is not relevant to audio systems. One word of caution though, this book is not like a "cookbook". You have to have an electronic background in order to make full use of the book - as the title rightly puts it, it is intended for engineers.

Handbook For Sound Engineers.......2002-02-24

You MUST buy this book! Pretend you did not see the price and order this book. It is the most comprehensive book on the subject that I have ever run across. It contains more than 1550 pages of information, diagrams, schematics, and just about anything else you could ever think to need. Covers everything from Accoustic Theory to Zener Diodes (I don't know what they are either...I haven't read that far yet!). I am planning to use this as a refresher for myself (that is what my schooling is in) and for training more sound techs at my church.

Note: This is a book for intermediate to advanced level sound engineers. It would be way over a beginners head. There are a number of excellent books for beginners available through Amazon, though.

This handbook is the best I've every read. There are some good books for pro-audio, but this one cover everything. Not only audio, but image projection as well.

This book has everything that an audio engineer would need to know, and nothing you don't. It gives you all the technical information that you could ever need while not being so pretentious as to tell you how you should use it. It is a terrific reference and will give you insight as to how some engineers chose to use thier tools.
