Customer Reviews:
excellent beginners book.......2004-10-21
Fabulous book, written especially for beginners who know very little about painting, but also has EXCELLENT pointers for those who are good painters, but love those extra tips.
I've got this one at the top of my shelf and I've underlined, bookmarked pages, etc. It really is an excellent read, but most of all, it has really easy-to-follow instructions and doesn't leave you confused.
If you're just learning to paint, then you really have to get this book. You just have to. It is written SIMPLY and is EASY to read and the book is really thick and hardback and will last a really long time. Well worth the money and something you can use as a reference too.
great book.......2003-06-23
This is a great, comprehensive painting guide for anyone who is interested in getting into oil, acrylics or watercolor painting. It shows all the basics needed including the materials available and needed and it also shows (at least to me) some advanced techniques. Great for any beginner and maybe even intermediate painter. The only complaint I have to make is that I would have liked that the book covered other kinds of painting too, such as glass painting, but I guess it makes sence that they didn't really get into that since it seems to me that it is a classic kind ot painting school.
A huge resource for anyone painting anything!.......2000-11-12
I am very pleased with the work I have created using this book. I had a lot of questions about watercolor and oil painting. Most of the other books I purchased and studied left a lot of the beginner things out....like how to actually mix colors well. The format is wonderful as well, you can go from one exercise to the next a really get some techniques under your belt. The approach to demystifying the products needed for each media was fantastic. You are shown what each product is for and when you might use it. The instuctions in the book include clear step by step pictures...so you don't start feeling lost halfway through the exercise. The best part? There is no rigid rules, the dialogue is personal and encouraging. You flip through it and start itching to paint!

Cardcaptor Sakura.......2004-02-28
***This book is in Spanish*** Unfortunately, even though Amazon did not include that fact the details about the book, you WILL have to pay postage to return it (plus a $3.00 fee???) ...not worth it...so BEWARE! We had one very, very disappointed child on her birthday. Unless your child knows how to read Spanish, this will not be very entertaining.

In a previous incarnation, writer Dominick Dunne was the toast of Hollywood--entertaining movie stars and socialites and invited by moguls to clambakes and black-tie dances. Long before he started churning out his romans à clef set in the private recesses of Hollywood and penthouses of New York City and his dispatches from notorious murder trials, he spent his days on movie sets, producing films like Ash Wednesday and working as an executive at various studios. In the off-hours, he and his wife Lenny ate dinner with Vincente Minnelli, Jack Benny, Rock Hudson, and Elizabeth Montgomery. They went to beach parties hosted by Jane Fonda and Roddy McDowall--and threw not a few bashes of their own, attended by, well, everyone and often photographed for Vogue magazine. Dunne seemed to carry his camera with him everywhere and "was always sticking [it] into someone's face." Kirk Douglas biting into an oversized hotdog, a scantily clad Paul Newman perusing a picnic table, Princess Margaret smoking, Mia Farrow dancing, and Natalie Wood hamming. Each weekend he carefully arranged his snapshots along with the week's invitations, telegrams, and news-clippings into a set of scrapbooks.
The Way We Lived Then closely resembles those scrapbooks, filled as it is with images culled from them. Dunne sews the scraps together with a loose memoir that moves from the mundane (how the house was decorated for a certain party, how the subjects of a given photo were feeling about one another at the time) to the grand (meditations on his marriage and his children). All of these famous friends, glittery parties, and cozy evenings did add up to a picture-perfect life for a time. But by the mid '60s, Dunne was drinking hard, insulting acquaintances in public, and being a perfectly terrible husband to the lovely Lenny. He was soon arrested carrying drugs into the country from Mexico, divorced, nearly poverty-stricken, and living in a cabin in Oregon. But he lived to tell about it, and though his story is something of a cautionary tale about the dangers of success and excess, punctuated as it is by his dreamy photos, one can't help but wonder if he'd happily go back to the way he lived then. --Jordana Moskowitz
Book Description
Mesmerizing, revelatory text combines with more than two hundred photographs -- most of them taken by the author -- in a startling illustrated memoir that will both astonish and move you.
When Dominick Dunne lived and worked in Hollywood, he had it all: a beautiful family, a glamorous career, and the friendship of the talented and powerful. He also had a camera and loved to take pictures. These photographs, which Dunne carefully preserved in more than a dozen leatherbound scrapbooks -- along with invitations, telegrams, personal notes, and other memorabilia -- record the parties, the glittering receptions, the society weddings, and scenes from the everyday lives of the Dunnes and those they knew, including Jane Fonda, Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman, Roddy McDowall, Elizabeth Taylor, Natalie Wood, Brooke Hayward, Jennifer Jones, and David Selznick. You'll meet them all in this fascinating book -- captured in snapshots as these celebrities relax at poolside barbecues, gossip at cozy get-togethers and dance at the Dunnes' dazzling black-and-white ball. And you will meet Dominick Dunne's beautiful wife, Lenny, and his children, Griffin, Alex, and Dominique, as they celebrate Christmases, birthdays, and graduations. But, most of all, you will meet Dominick Dunne and learn about the peaks and valleys of his years in Hollywood, the disastrous turn his life took, and the long road back that led to his triumphant career as a writer. With its engaging photographs and candid text,
The Way We Lived Then is a riveting and unvarnished account of a life among the stars and a life almost lost.
Customer Reviews:
--Interesting glimpse of old Hollywood--.......2005-08-18
THE WAY WE LIVED THEN is a look at the lives and personalities of some of the most famous entertainers in the world.
I've been aware of the author, Dominick Dunne for a long time, but until reading this book, I had no idea what kind of background he had or what made him so knowledgeable about so many celebrities. Dunne was a director and producer of various TV shows and apparently was good at his job. People enjoyed working with him and he and his wife gave wonderful parties and were invited everywhere.
The book is as much about Dunne and his family as it is about the people that he socialized with. His story is rather sad because he ended up losing his wife because he became addicted to drugs and the fast Hollywood lifestyle. There are more than a few moving stories in the book. One pitiful entry has Dunne and Peter Lawford sharing drugs at a party. Years before, they had been friends and neighbors, but at this low point in their lives, they were both broke and seemingly without friends.
You can also read about Elizabeth Montgomery, Gig Young, Natalie Wood, George Hamilton, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda and dozens of other Hollywood "big" names. Dunne took a lot of photographs and I think that I enjoyed the snapshots as much as I did the text of the book.
Mr. Dunne, I adore you!.......2004-02-03
I think I was probably one of the very first people who purchased this book...and I loved every page and every minute of it! Some of the earlier reviewers I read below simply don't seem to "get" this book. It is not meant to be great literature. It is meant to be a great read with one-of-a-kind photos, and it delivers both in spades! Also, I believe it is meant to be somewhat of a love letter, both to the parts of Mr. Dunne's ealier life that were happy and held great promise, AND perhaps to the fans of his books...giving all of us glimpses into what was an incredibly fascinating "Hollywood existence" and giving us a peek at the REAL people that he has thinly veiled, completely disguised, or combined to create the fascinating characters that populate his terrific books. Mr. Dunne, if you read these reviews (I know that I probably would!!), please know that I eagerly await everything you publish, including your monthly "Diarist" articles in Vanity Fair. Your writings are so incredibly enjoyable, fascinating, and provide a much-needed escape for me. You must feel very blessed to have finally found your calling - so many never do.
Dominick Dunne is fascinating.......2002-11-05
It is easy to see why celebrities, criminals and perfect strangers have told Mr. Dunne their secrets. He is so interesting in a gossipy, name-dropping but sweet way. His Hollywood life makes an engrossing tale, much more entertaining than fiction.
Beautiful collection of photos.......2001-10-06
This book is filled with beautiful photographs of almost every star imaginable with personal anecdotes from Mr. Dunne to go with them. There are beautiful photos of Natalie Wood and a young (brunette) Elizabeth Montgomery. Mr. Dunne's life has certainly had its ups and downs, but this is NOT another celebrity pity party...he writes of the bad times he has faced, as well as the good, in a very matter of fact style, which is (thankfully) not at all whiny. But, again, the real treasure here are all the beautiful photographs of beautiful people in beautiful places. Thanks, Mr. Dunne, for sharing them with us.
THE WAY WE LIVED THEN.......2001-06-27
Mr. Dunne can work the room no matter where he is, no matter what social strata. I would have had an anxiety attack had I been face-to-face with Betsy Bloomingdale. Yet, this why I love Mr. Dunne. Reading about Betsy, she retained the warm, kind, classy image that I imagined her to have from various books and magazines. I loved being a fly-on-the-wall when Mr. Dunne was in Washington since I knew so little about politics. It was fun the way he scribed it in the pages. I feel safe reading Dominick's stories - although I feel like I am there, I don't have the real fear!

If you're interested in building or maintaining a classical music recording library, want advice on what to buy, and like the format of your recommendations to be on the breezy side, this may be your book. Jim Svejda's picks are sound ones, although he tends to favor older recordings over newer ones and leaves out some outstanding efforts in the process. Still, he gives you the straight scoop as he hears it, and he hears it pretty well.
Book Description
Jim Svejda has done it again! In this fully revised and expanded edition of
The Record Shelf Guide to Classical CDs and Audiocassettes, the irreverent and opinionated author guides readers to more of the best in classical music.
Host of the long-running American Public Radio show The Record Shelf, Svejda has assembled this comprehensive guide alphabetically by composer. Meant to be used as a reference manual, Svejdaa concentrates mainly on what he feels is the classical music people actually listen to most.In his opinion, this consists of music produced from the middle of the eighteenth century to roughly the middle of the twentieth. This book is filled with Svejda's own brand of unusual, acerbic comments and sugary prose. It includes feisty reviews such as ". . . Pachelbel was a third-rate baroque non-entity who occasional rose to the level of second-rate in some of his organ music." And praise of favorites such as Fritz Kreisler, ". . . one of the greatest violins in history whose recordings of Beethoven, Brahms, and Mendelssohn concertos remain unsurpassed in their Romantic daring and philosophical depth . . ."
About the Author:
Jim Svejda hosts the popular weekly American Public Radio show The Record Shelf, as well as the CBS Radio program On Film. In addition to his radio programs, he is the station manager for KUSC in Los Angeles.
Customer Reviews:
Outdated 1996 version still useful.......2005-03-24
While what music-critic Jim Svejda writes is informative, funny and interesting, the survery of available recordings in this 1996 is limited and misses the last decade of newer recordings, reissues and compilations. But it will cost you a bundle more to have the latest edition. However, this is the type of guide that "distills" the more legendary recordings from the pack - at least in terms of Svejda's viewpoint - so is loaded with tons of experience. Generally, such a guide is not recommended as one's primary source of review/opinion but more as a second or third source. For this it is helpful and certainly entertaining given his often irreverant tone (unlike Penguin Guide's overly-prim-and-proper tone). His descriptions of the major works are interesting too. While the most comprehensive guide is Penguin and my favorite other source is "The Third Ear Essential Listening Companion for Classical Music, " Jim Svejda offers a fresh, highly opinionated perspective that often gives new insights the other guides did not.
Hilariously fun and educational experience.......1999-06-27
How many classical music afficionados do you know with a sense of humor, and a willingness to use it even in regard to the music they love? In all of my years of studying music I have come across only one (and he's not an academic) : Jim Svejda, one of the funniest men to ever write about music. For his incredible humor alone this book is easily recommendable enough. Where the problem starts for me is in Svekda's personal tastes -- they are quite conservative. How ironic that such an iconoclastic and irreverent guy can be so orthodox in his tastes in music, but then again that is part of the charm I guess that makes him so inimitable; you never can predict him, and if you try you are inevitably wrong! That is how I found the experience anyway due to the paradox that Svejda represents. Case in point: despite loathing just about every bit of modern music he comes across, he praises almost everything Schoenberg ever did. If there is one point of contention I would have with The Record Shelf it would be this phobia of modern music. Missing from the book are names like Cowell, Crumb, Riley, Partch, Reich, and scads of others who I had hoped would receive at least a passing remark given the book's 800-page length. It wasn't that he was required to like it - a guy as outspoken as this could easily tell us why these composers don't deserve recognition. Even Ligeti is left out, at the expense of scores of people of whom I have never heard. But Svejda's objective here, was to present music that one is likely to HEAR; not necessarily names that one is likely to know. So you can expect to find out about some composers you don't know, but ought to try. In addition, he does not take the stance so common in academic circles, whereby innovation is the only prerequisite for quality. So for example, composers such as Roy Harris, or John Field -- who get little more than an obstinate grunt of arrogant and self-satisfied disapproval from all the professors I have ever met -- get good remarks for the engaging elements of their music overlooked by scholars. I marvel at the man's super-human ability to actually remember so much data about so many recordings, performers, composers; anecdotes about performances, conductors, and yet still have enough brain matter leftover to make references to literature and more. He must have a photographic memory. I have almost nothing in common with Svejda on a musical level, and yet still every page is a revelation of some sort or another. Absolutely recommended to anyone except those afraid to enjoy themselves.
The best guide to the best classical recordings.......1998-07-19
Of all reviews of classical music, I trust only the American Record Guide (a periodical) and this book. The author has a wry wit and a wonderful feel for what is and isn't good. Face it; there are many pieces of classical music (particularly 20th century) that just sound bad. Svejda essentially says "don't let anyone tell you that this sounds good...it doesn't", and he's right. Perhaps his tastes are mine are alike. It's uncanny just how much they are alike, so I attribute it to telling it like it is.
Informative, humorous, and thought provoking........1998-02-01
I have had the pleasure of listening to Jim Svejda almost every day when I lived in Southern California. Wheather you agree or disagree with his unique point of view toward performing arts, this book will keep any classical music lover entertained.
An amusing and informative guide to classical recordings.......1998-01-10
Jim Svejda's knowledge of recorded classical music is probably unsurpassed, and his views on composers and their works are as entertaining as they are enlightening. This book is your best guide to the current recorded repertoire. Buy it before you buy another classical CD or tape.
