Book Description
One of the most widely read books on modern design, Nikolaus Pevsner’s landmark work today remains as stimulating as it was when first published in 1936. This expanded edition of Pioneers of Modern Design provides Pevsner’s original text along with significant new and updated information, enhancing Pevsner’s illuminating account of the roots of Modernism. The book now offers many beautiful color illustrations; biographies and bibliographies of all major figures; illustrated short essays on key themes, movements, and individuals; a critique of Pevsner’s analysis from today’s perspective; examples of works after 1914 (where the original study ended); a biography detailing Pevsner’s life and achievements; and much more.
Pevsner saw Modernism as a synthesis of three main sources: William Morris and his followers, the work of nineteenth-century engineers, and Art Nouveau. The author considers the role of these sources in the work of early Modernists and looks at such masters of the movement as C.F.A. Voysey and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Britain, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright in America, and Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner in Vienna. The account concludes with a discussion of the radical break with the past represented by the design work of Walter Gropius and his future Bauhaus colleagues.

Television Writing from the Inside is a very good guide. Larry Brody writes from experience and it shows.
If you found this book helpful, you will also likely enjoy Starting Your Television Writing Career by Abby Finer. Another very good book.
not really a book on writing.......2005-11-21
The brief armchair advice on writing in this book is too vague and general to be of use.
But the account of how a network television organization works is useful if you plan to try to market your material to such organizations.
The book is also useful for laying out the three stages that an idea must go through to end up on TV. These he calls "the logline", the "outline" and the teleplay. His examples of each of these (for sitcoms, series and TV movies) are also useful.
The book also (unintentionally) helps you to understand why television shows and network-produced TV movies are so bad.
Great Insider Advice.......2005-07-23
Larry Brody has an amazing breadth of knowledge about what makes the Television industry work. This book is a fantastic look into the workings of the industry. He is cleary an authority on the subject, having penned over 500 hours of television.
My only reservation in recommending this book to everyone is that it's been a long time since Larry stood outside the industry looking in. The landscape has changed and Larry is already a barnacle on the television whale, far out to sea. For those stuck on the rocky shore, this book might be more useful if you already have screen credits and want to leverage your position with knowledge about how the industry works.

TV writer-producer Larry Brody uses Television Writing From The Inside Out : Your Channel To Success to explore a medium he helped shape, discussing writing jobs available in TV work, considering teleplay development and writing for different genres, and including sample teleplays by Brody and others complete with analysis. This "nuts and bolts" reference is a recommended pick because it's packed from cover to cover with Brody's insider experience and knowledge of how the industry works.

Amazing text on Musical Form.......2007-01-14
This text explained Musical Form more clearly and thoroughly than any other musical form books I own (Leon Stein, Spring/Hutcheson) and gave excellent examples. I very highly recommend it for study of Musical Form and Analysis.
Contrary to what the last poster said, I do not find it a big issue that there is no Anthology for Analysis to accompany it. The anthology that accompanies Green's book is VERY expensive. Most of the examples in Berry's text are available very inexpensively as a used copy at your local sheet music store.
Berry's down to earth book on musical form.......2000-04-03
Wallace Berry's, Form in Music, is easier to read than other music theory books. The book explains musical forms such as; binary, ternary, rondo and others. Berry uses proper terminology and eplains why other words or phrases should not be used. He clearly defines musical terms and gives a formula for musical forms. He cites many pieces of music to prove or show how the formula is realized. He also explains how some pieces and composers broke the formula. My one complaint about the book deals with these citations. There is not enough musical notation examples to read and look at when Berry refers to a piece. He refers to pieces that are never notated. When dealing with musical form and analysis one needs the music. In Green's Form in Tonal Music, Volume 2 is a whole book full of musical examples. Green, however, is not as readable as Berry.
