In 1984 Sebastião Salgado began what would be a fifteen-month project of photographing the drought-stricken Sahel region of Africa in the countries of Chad, Ethiopia, Mali, and Sudan, where approximately one million people died from extreme malnutrition and related causes. Working with the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders, Salgado documented the enormous suffering and the great dignity of the refugees. This early work became a template for his future photographic projects about other afflicted people around the world. Since then, Salgado has again and again sought to give visual voice to those millions of human beings who, because of military conflict, poverty, famine, overpopulation, pestilence, environmental degradation, and other forms of catastrophe, teeter on the edge of survival. Beautifully produced, with thoughtful supporting narratives by Orville Schell, Fred Ritchin, and Eduardo Galeano, this first U.S. edition brings some of Salgado's earliest and most important work to an American audience for the first time. Twenty years after the photographs were taken, Sahel: The End of the Road is still painfully relevant.
Born in Brazil in 1944, Sebastião Salgado studied economics in São Paulo and Paris and worked in Brazil and England. While traveling as an economist to Africa, he began photographing the people he encountered. Working entirely in a black-and-white format, Salgado highlights the larger meaning of what is happening to his subjects with an imagery that testifies to the fundamental dignity of all humanity while simultaneously protesting its violation by war, poverty, and other injustices. "The planet remains divided," Salgado explains. "The first world in a crisis of excess, the third world in a crisis of need." This disparity between the haves and the have-nots is the subtext of almost all of Salgado's work.

I think Sebastiao Salgado is a great photographer. All the black and white pictures are in duotone color, which make them look very professional. Something this book has is that you can see through people and at the same time look to a picture with great composition, so you can feel the picture and at the same time admire it's appearance. I just think the pictures are too sad for me, you can see the real people suffering so much.

One of the most potent books on the human experience. I got a lump in my throat while viewing this collection of prints. Sebastiao Salgado is a master at using value to capture shape and texture in his subject matter.

We have the complete series on DVD, but only watch infrequently. We could never identify an episode by just the title. This is like a TV guide because it gives a brief synopsis of each episode. It also has interesting behind-the-scenes stories. It is worth the price.

This is a must have for any STAR TREK fan. A very useful guide filled with vast amounts of info makes it an essential tool for navigating your way through the STNG series.

It presents many interesting info about the begining of the series, so you could read about the casting processes. Of course it has a good explanation of the main chapters over the 7 years. The only bad thing about it is that the photos are B&W.

Helpful guide to Star Trek Next Generation Fans.......2006-08-08

I purchased this Star Trek Companion primarily for my hubby. We have the other Companion for seasons 1-5. We enjoyed reading it and each day we would read what the next episode was going to be on t.v. that night. But we were so disappointed that we couldn't go on for the next seasons. When I saw this book on Amazon, I was thrilled and we just LOVE the book. Of course it has the other seasons, but we now can go on and what is such a extra treat is that the Companion has the Star Trek Next Generation's movies reviews. I am not disappointed nor sorry that I bought this book. It is WORTH the money.

If you are truly a Metallica fan, this book is a must. In response to another review, of course there are no pictures, it's a LYRICS book! Overall it's a great book, it includes all the official releases except for the album "St. Anger." It is true that most albums (except "Load" and "Reload") have the lyrics in the booklet, but if you are actually interested in reading the lyrics, you can't spend all your time switching all the various booklets, then you wouldn't get to listen to the song! Using this book is very convenient seeing as how all the songs are put in chronologaical order, and it only costs 15 dollars!!! If you are a REAL Metallica fan, you should have this book by your stereo, ready to be opened and read!

Useless unless you want the Load/Reload lyrics..........2003-07-28

Well the book title sums this up altogether. All the bands lyrics in a 112 page book with just that...lyrics. Not 1 picture of the band, just lyrics.

These lyrics you probably already own if you have the bands albums. The only lyrics that you won't already have in the album booklets is the Load and ReLoad lyrics which are published officially for the first time right here in this book along with the lyrics to the bands last single "I Disappear" which featured in the film "Mission Impossible 2".

So out of the 74 songs on the albums you only really buy this album for 28 songs.

Only get this if you are a die hard Metallica completist or desperate for the lyrics to the Load and Reload albums and I can't see many people shelling out the money for lyrics to those.
