Book Description
This magnificently illustrated book accompanies the most ambitious exhibition in the Hayward Gallery's program for the year 2000. Spectacular Bodies: The Art and Science of the Human Body from Leonardo da Vinci to Now is a ground-breaking exhibition with the potential to be a visual, cultural, and academic revelation with profound impact. The project encourages a new way of looking at visual objects from the territories that are conventionally labeled "medicine" and "art."
The human body is an astounding feat of engineering. For centuries man has striven to understand its complexities, both artistically and anatomically, often resorting to human dissection. Illustrating the point at which medicine and art collide, Know Thyself brings together an extraordinary range of more than 250 objects from more than eighty medical and art museums and collections worldwide. Works of art from across the centuries include the anatomical drawings of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Dürer, and Stubbs, seventeenth-century portraits of surgeons and paintings by great masters including Rembrandt, Hogarth, Courbet, Gericault, and Degas. These works will be shown in a new context alongside medical instruments, prints, and drawings used in the medical study of the human face and body, and life-size anatomical models.
Today, as forensic and medical sciences advance as never before--with the development of genetic fingerprinting, cryogenics, and designer babies--artists continue to find inspiration in the human body. Video installations, photography, and sculpture will present new perspectives on the historic material. The eight contemporary artists involved range from internationally celebrated video artists Bill Viola and Tony Oursler, to younger artists like Gerhard Lang, Christine Borland, and Marc Quinn.

A spectacularly successful foray addressing Science and Art.......2001-12-30
In this extraordinarily interesting book, a catalogue that accompanied an exhibition in England in 1999 - 2000, the authors and curators present figurative painting and sculpting in a fresh and original fashion. Dipping into the engravings of Vesalius and the amazingly detailed wax recreations of anatomic dissections which populated Medical Schools for centuries, we are introduced to an art form that preceeded drawing from the model in the studio. Never meant to be "art", these dissection models were high science at the same time serving to "glorify the magnificence of God's creation of man". Whatever the initial inspiration, when placed side by side with the Renaissance paintings of the various anatomy lessons (such as the fmous Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp) from Rembrandt through the 19th century to the present day explorations by the likes of Bill Viola and Tony Oursler they serve to enhance our understanding and appreciation for our own bodies as corporal science and as vessels of art. What a fine exhibition this must have been! Fortunately the thought vested in this significant collaboration has been captured in time in the form of this beautifully illustrated and documented book. Only one complaint: Why was this luxurious volume printed only in paperback form? This is an art book worthy of any artist committed to the figure and to all of us who admire figurative painting, sculpture and the wonder of the human form.
The art of dissection.......2001-04-03
This is one of the most fascinating art books to cross my path in some time. The subject is the artistic representation of human anatomy.
This is the occasion for a fascinating tour of curiosa. Of course, you have a sequence of Dutch and American anatomy theatre group portraits. More interesting is the sculptures in wax of dissection, surgical, and anatomical models, handmade by what were apparently a group of mostly Italian scupltors. A fellow named Clemente Susini was apparently the Michaelangelo of this field. What makes these interesting is that they are not, as in the -Gray's Anatomy- images, merely displayed. Many are dramatically posed, in the overdone, theatrical poses of baroque painting. The image of them gesticulating as they spill their guts is mildly disconcerting.
There is an extensive discussion of écorché figures, flayed figures that display skinless human musculature. Collections of skeletons and bones, often arranged dramatically rather than clinically, are also featured. There is a large selection of ethnological portraits, and photographs of the insane.
The text is largely sympathetic to these forgotten creators who sought to combine art and science. Identity politics and post-structuralist hoodoo intrudes only slightly on the text, much less than you'd fear given these subjects. A fascinating book for those who are not easily disturbed.

Customer Reviews:
Beautifully-written.......2007-04-27
Chilling and riveting, angering and thought-provoking. We start off meeting Suzie, the "box" she puts herself in, and the "cloud" she floats on. A safe, quiet world. A world where her mother can't make Suzie talk...because if Suzie can't talk, then she can't say things to anger her mother and cause her mother to hurt her. Suzie stops sleeping. She stops talking to her mother, her sister, her father, her best friend. Everyone. She stops walking. The one thing she can't stop doing is crying. She retreats into this safe box, those safe clouds, hiding, until she is finally taken get help.
This is a beautifully written that book takes takes a frank look at the family dynamics of co-dependency and abuse, and leads the reader on a journey through Suzie's healing process. The reader will root for Suzie as she opens up and starts to trust. After a dramatic breakthrough, Suzie alters the lives of her sister and herself forever.
"Some words hurt like fire".......2007-04-25
Twelve-year-old Suzie has just been dropped off at St. Dorothy's mental hospital after she stops walking, sleeping, or speaking. The only time she feels safe is when she is inside her 'box,' and that's usually how she stays all day long, sitting in a chair with her knees up to her chin, unmoving. Her Uncle Elliot, disturbed by her ever-worsening behavior, initiates her eventual stay at the hospital.
There are already several summaries up for this book, so I think there really isn't a need for me to give another one; plus, I don't want to spoil anyone. I do want to say that Susan Shaw's debut novel is a very beautiful, sweet, and sad story that follows Suzie's struggle to distance herself from the world as she has been doing, and the eventual revealing, through her, of what happened and why she has become the way she is. I was very drawn into the story and her relationships; from her mother, a former singer, her father, her sister Deanna, Karen, a girl in the institution, her uncle Elliot, aides: Marie, Stella, and Bill, and Moses and Joshua, two other children in the institution. The story was moving and powerful, with moments of quiet as Suzie gained a new view of her world and shattering revelations, with characters to care about and hope the best for.
I think this is a wonderful story, not to be missed. It is one of the best books I have read all year long.
A Great book!.......2006-06-18
I haven't read this in a while, but I intend to read it again soon. This book is extremely intresting, it wraps you up, so that you're forced to turn the page. It almost makes you feel as though you are in the mental institution with Suzie. I do remember that her recovery was suprizingly quick, but Suzie also says that her problem is not completely solved, making the book very realistic.
I love how Suzie defines talking by how you express yourself, not by the actual words.
Hating pineapple is talking...Wearing Peacock feathers is talking...
Perfect........2005-04-16
Black Eyed Suzie is one of the best books I've pulled off the shelves yet. For one thing, it is just a wonderfully written story. True, believable character that you can simpathize and relate with on a totally amazing level. The plot is one that drags you and and forces you to keep reading, no matter what. And after you finish it, you'll end up taking it out and rereading it again and again.
I think troubled teens should give this story, or one like it, a shot. It helps to bring the thought that 'Hey, I'm not the only screwed up person out there.' Over all, a wonderful read that I will return to every chance I get.
I wish I could talk but I can't!.......2005-04-16
The book I am reading is called Black Eyed Suzie by Susan Shaw. Ever since Suzie's mom abused her, Suzie stopped talking. Eventually Suzie's Uncle Elliot saw her and made her go to a mental hospital. At the mental hospital people try to get her to talk but she can't. She feels she has no words.
The conflict in this book is that Suzie can't talk but people try to force her to. At the mental hospital she has conflicts with only one other girl, Karen. Karen pushes her down and breaks her possessions, but Suzie can't do anything because she is too weak. Often, when people at the hospital help her, they're a little too late. After a while in the mental hospital she thinks, `well maybe if I start talking they will let me go to be with my family.' The conflict starts, like I said, when her mom beats her and her dad is never home. The conflict is not easy to resolve for Suzie.
I think that Black Eyed Suzie is good for teenagers who have a problem, who want to learn what kind of problem people have, or just want to read a good book. I think almost anyone would enjoy this book, but I think really teenagers would enjoy it most. I would tell you the ending but I think you can read it and find out.

Another great anthology.......2000-02-16
Anthologies of Black Women Writers are wonderful because they showcase and highlight the works of well-known and un-known writers. This collection delves into the lives of women characters and offers very useful critiques and author insights. A wonderful book and a great read for those wishing to explore the depthness of women of color through literature. This book also allows you to discover what YOU like...then you can read the other works of authors like Ntozake Shange, Toni Morrison, Alexis DeVeaux, Paulette Childress White, and Sherlee Anne Williams, to name of few of my favorites. A very good book that ANYONE will enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
One of the Best Books I Have Ever Read.......2006-06-06
Black-Eyed Susan is a book adults and children will enjoy equally. The seeming simplicity of the tale belies rich poetic images that took my breath away. The tenderness and love with which the characters interact with one another will make you feel warm all over, and maybe a renewed hope for humankind. The theme is also unusual for a children's book - Susan's mother is suffering from depression, although no one at that time knew what it was. How her daughter rouses her out of it, with the help of a chance encounter with strangers, is extremely powerful and moving.
Armstrong has thoroughly researched the time period this story takes place in, and it flows naturally so the reader feels she is right there in the story. Lovely illustrations add to the mood.
The best book I've read in ages.......1997-08-07
This book is so cool !!! It is very educational yet very good also, I would recommend this book to anyone out there. This book is a real page-turner.I also think this author has a lot of potential

Ok book..........2003-03-20
Their passions ran as free as the land they vowed to tame...Ever since she could remember, dark-eyed Susan Armitage had longed for Logan Vance - the one man who could never be hers. Then one day an unexpected twist of fate brought the virile adventurer into her life. Driven by a reckless desire she could no longer deny, Susan scandalized St.Louis society by agreeing to accompany Logan and his two young children on their long journey west through Indian Territory. In the rugged Oklahoma wilderness, what had begun as a marriage of convenience soon erupted in a raging tempest of passions unbound. Yet as they gloried in the ecstasy of their sensuous union, Logan and Susan found their dreams threatened by struggle for survival that would test the very limits of their bold and searing love.

Book Description
Charming, debonair, and impeccably attired in a black tuxedo, Dean Martin was coolness incarnate. His music provided the soundtrack of romance, and his image captivated movie and television audiences for more than fifty years. His daughter Deana was among his most devoted fans, but she also knew a side of him that few others ever glimpsed.
In this heartfelt memoir, Deana recalls the constantly changing blended family that marked her youth, along with the unexpected moments of silliness and tenderness that this unusual Hollywood family shared. She candidly reveals the impact of Dean’s fame and characteristic aloofness, but delights in sharing wonderful, never-before-told stories about her father and his pallies known as the Rat Pack. This enchanting account of life as the daughter of one of Hollywood’s sexiest icons will leave you entertained, delighted, and nostalgic for a time gone by.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for a Fan.......2007-05-14
Deana Martin gives a very honest, blunt portrayal of her father - faults and all. Very easy reading. And a must read for anyone who is a fan of Dean Martin.
Disconnected........2007-04-26
Well, folks.....if Dean Martin was as emotionally detached as all sources (including this one) claim than Deana Martin is most assuredly her Father's Daughter. Throughout the entire book, one gets the feeling that she is struggling to write about her father when she really, really wants to write about her. And then write about herself some more. And maybe, maybe she can keep on doing that if she keeps on staving us off, by putting a little bow here and a whistle there, in the name of thy Father, of course. The detached-ness I mentioned earlier is a constant running ribbon from the first page straight on thru to the last. And the cherry on top (of what mind you...the whistles?....sorry ;P ) is she seems genuinely oblivious. The perfect example is a small mention of her father giving her five hundred dollars for a small jar of Pasta Fagiole in his later years....mind you this is after a longwinded everlasting session of grousing over how he was stingy with her about a car or something...something distasteful because she is oblivious to her state of being a grown woman, but seeing the world as a princess-deserving-of-privelege....Yawn. Nonetheless, she goes on and on about what she wanted and why she felt unfairly neglected (we are talking about an event that happened in HER middle AGE) and then she mentions her selfless, sacrificing, heroic effort in making her elderly father a small pot of pasta, and he thanks her with half a grand. Now here is the part that she is to clueless to realize is revealing and not in her favor. Daughter dearest then proceeds to bombard her father with the Pasta...with her hand out of course. The book was amusing, but not for the right reasons. The book was revealing to be sure....just about the WRONG Martin. In finishing the last paragraph, I didnt feel like Deana was a particularly horrible person.....just typical, self-centered and way, way to old to be so. On the flip side, I enjoyed the book her brother wrote, "That's Amore", tremendously. I found it to be honest and vivid. Oh, as for pictures in this book, they are all sufficient and expected except for this one wonderful pic where Dean Martin is Mid-Air, Mid Swan dive towards the family swimming pool, with all the kids splashing about below. Its a precious picture. I wish the picture she painted was half as real. Tsk Tsk.
--Chas
Very, Very Good.......2007-04-25
Since receiving this book as a gift one month ago, I am reading it for the second time already. The first reading took only one and half days. It's that good! My previous encounters with Rat Pack were from The Rat Pack Confidential but this book shows a daughter who desperatly wanted for of her fathers precious time and the things kids will go through to get their parents attention. I must admit that the tears flowed on more than one occation. I very good book and a must for any Dino fans.
A wonderful autobiography!.......2007-02-20
This was purchased as a gift and it has made its way down to several people, who all agree, this was one of THE best books written on Dean Martin! His daughter did a truly wonderful job!
Dean Martin.......2007-01-19
A thoroughly entertaining read. I've been a fan of the rat pack for years, but obtained some interesting insights in this read

14 Modern Contest Solos For Snare Drum By John S Pratt Contents The interesting library contains titles such as: Stomping Through the Bar Line * Gingersnap * Ruffing Up a Storm * No Left Flam 6/8.
Customer Reviews:
A Timeless Classic for Rudimental Snare Drummers.......2002-06-18
John Pratt's book is a staple that all serious percussionists should play at some point. Pratt utilizes many rudiments in every solo and incorporates a lot of "over the barline" techniques. Many of my own drum students have performed these solos for solo and ensemble festivals and recitals. This book is a great tool for drummers in the medium to advanced stages. I highly recommend!
A great solo peice with technical solos.......2000-10-22
This book is great! It contains great peices of music for the snare drummer. It is made to be rudimentaly sound. Meaning the solo's are full of many rudiments. This makes it full of great playback, and full of great learning. The solo's range from diffucult to very diffucult. It is not for the the faint at heart drummer. Hodge Podge(the easiest solo) cannot be played unless you have the ability to play rolls(5/7/9/10/11/13),flams,ruffs,and sixteenth notes with accompyning eight notes. The hardest title is My Friend Norman and Gingersnap. The 6/8 excercies are very diffucult in their own right. This is great solo book for any above average to advanced snare drummer!

Book Description
Wendt provides a collection of critical stories examining the power and politics of organizational life. He looks at workers in frustrating situations and explores a new type of power that is simultaneously beneficial and detrimental. The talk, language, and discourse that constitute the micro-paradoxes of work life are investigated. Starting with the concept of corporate hegemony, Wendt looks at its language, provides stories illustrating hegemony, and helps the reader envision how hegemony carries over to other social realms like higher education. After exploring the possibility of counter-hegemonic resistance, including tactical storytelling, Wendt sets forth a new theory of suspended power. While he shows there is no clear answer or response to the politics of corporate hegemony because it is a persistent dilemma, he points the reader to the uses of critical theory to understand and adjust to contemporary power dynamics. Of particular interest to scholars and students involved with communication, management, and cultural studies.

Book Description
This book offers both a clear account of theoretical approaches to television drama and readings of a range of television drama texts. Arguing that TV drama is a key site for exploring the usefulness of contemporary theories of identity, culture and representation, it offers a framework which links this analysis to theoretical concepts explored elsewhere in cultural, media and film studies over recent years. Each chapter provides a critical account of a specific theoretical approach, outlining its history and scope, and demonstrating its application across a range of TV dramas, ending with a close reading of particular examples. Organized around the themes of identity and subjectivity, the book encompasses a wide range of approaches and texts, from sitcom, to docudrama, to sci fi, and is an ideal resource for undergraduate students of media studies, cultural studies, communication studies, and television and film studies.
