Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very enlightening reading for Art students.......2006-02-27

The blank Canvas is an enlightening reading not only for students but for anyone interested in art related careers. Anna Held Audette's clear and elegant discourse has been very beneficial to my Spanish speaking painting students who find much of English written artbooks hard to understand.

5 out of 5 stars I SO NEED THIS BOOK!.......2006-02-22

I am one of the "beginning artists" at whom this book is aimed. (Just give me a moment to giggle at the person who complained that a book called "The Blank Canvas" is for painters. Okay, I'm over it.) This concise, easy to digest (but certainly not simplistic) text gives suggestions on how to find subjects on your own, which is where I am in my art, I need to know HOW to get ideas. It's not written in that mucky, "Vein of Metallic Glitter" mode, either. I believe anyone who makes visual art (drawings, paintings, sculpture, computer art, for instance)--and who is "stuck"--will find this useful. Also, it gives very helpful advice on good art habits that will help you keep flexible and open to what actually constitutes a subject. (BTW, if you are a writer, I'd suggest "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott or "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg, for similar but more writerly :) suggestions.)

Well worth what I paid for it, and a welcome addition to my art library.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book.......2005-09-21

I was pleased with the speed in which the book arrived, the condition for being used was good and the book itself was a really good read for someone in a dry spell. Thanks. S. Taylor

5 out of 5 stars clarifying.......2001-06-22

small book full of knowledge.if you are a painter, will find answers and solutions for creative blocks. comments on "the studio"(the space for your work), copying, sources and others. read this book ,and feel secure the next time you face a blank canvas.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for all Artists.......2000-02-26

What a wonderful book - I go back to it again and again. While "Art and Fear" is a great source of information, it is a little dry. I truly enjoy reading "The Blank Canvas", because it is a concise and witty source of inspiration. I wish I had read it sooner!

Book Description

Dr. Bastiaan Heemsbergen, a psychologist and developer of leaders, shows that the best insights into leadership can come not from what leaders are thinking, but from how leaders think.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars insightful and timely, if a bit rough........2007-07-27

This book uses brain centered science and art inspired practice to explain the complexities and uncertainty of leading in the modern business world. Readers may find the first few chapters heavy, as they reference many new discoveries in neuroscience. However, these forays are mostly justified and applied in practical capacity builders in the latter half of the book. The "Leadership Sensing Toolbox," presented in the last two chapters, describe numerous activities and tools inspired from the arts (i.e. theatre, sculpting, photos etc.). These tools attempt to evoke "fresh eyes" which catalyze intuitive and creative leadership.

In some respects this book qualifies an entirely different approach to what it takes to lead and succeed in the business world. If you need balanced scorecards, ROI case studies, look elsewhere. Dr. Heemsbergen focuses on what "mindful" leaders seem to do intuitively: make decisions that change peoples' patterns, leverage creativity and evolve organizations. He seems to take much inspiration from the Arts, asking if there is are synergies between an effective corporate leaders and artistic practice. The author's background lends to extensive research on the brain, from which he argues that great leaders employ non-conscious processes 'below' the spreadsheet that are similar to those leaps taken by artists in the creative process. How does an artist choose his palette? Can a CEO mimic and learn from that process? For instance, he encourages the metaphor of visualizing a blank canvas rather than a blueprint in decision-making processes.

Although the book is well written and reasonably organized, it can be choppy and wide-ranging. Combining neuroscience, business leadership and the Arts is an almost Sisyphean task, which shows in the sometimes-rough prose. Those who skim may appreciate the many "Try This" breakouts, while those wanting context can delve into the science behind the ideas. Although not the easiest of reads, The Leader's Brain offers perceptive insight into many trends that are emerging in mainstream consulting (BCG, McKinsey etc.).

2 out of 5 stars The Leader's Brain.......2006-07-19

The book is way to "scientific" in it's reading and less direct in how a "Leader" would think, analyze, or process data to arrive at the decisions he would. I found little that I can use in my related work or carry over into my daily leadership activities.
This book is more suited, in my opinion, to Psycologists or others who explore the functions and behaviors of the brain.

Inspired by the carpets and textiles of Asia, Africa, and the Americas, Ethnic Needlepoint presents a very richly patterned and vividly colored selection of work. Striking motifs--drawn from India, the Caucasus, Ghana, Nigeria, Morocco, Peru, and Mexico, among other places--are nicely adapted to projects ranging from cushions and chair seats to picture frames and lampshades. The charts are fairly clear and are accompanied by a brief explanation for assembling the actual project once the needlepoint is complete and there is a basic technique section at the end. Still, novices might opt to start with the less complex eyeglass cases before moving on to the more intricate designs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great graphics!.......2002-12-19

Must add my praise for this book. Gorgeous colors in clear graphic designs plus various colorways so you can see what would happen if you use different colors. I get a feeling of generosity from the authors who obviusly love their craft and want to share it.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite needlework book!.......2002-08-18

In addition to bold and unusual patterns, Mary Norden has an extremely good eye for colors. I use patterns and parts of patterns from this book all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Not your grandmother's needlepoint.......2000-02-17

This book brings the beauty of the various international fabrics to your needlepoint canvas. It's not your grandmother's needlepoint - no cats or flowers, just bold and exciting designs with great color graphs and ideas. I highly recommend this book - I even ordered a copy for my sister although it was out-of-print.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......1999-04-05

There are many lovely needlepoint books with an emphasis on romantic or Victorian designs. This book consists of designs with Asian, African and Latin and Native American influences. The photographs are beautiful, the instructions and charts are clear, and the colors dazzling! Highly recommended for all needleworkers---knitters, cross stitchers, crocheters, etc.---not just needlepointers.

5 out of 5 stars Almost too beautiful to write in!.......2007-09-30

I love this journal. It combines beautiful designs, illustration, and quotes from famous creative minds such as Paul Gauguin's "I shut my eyes in order to see." Michaelangelo, Picasso, Galileo, Wordsworth are just some of the artists, writers, and scientists who reflect within its pages on creativity and the Creator God. Scripture is woven through out. For myself as a Christian and an artist this journal was a visual feast!

                Book Description

Hollywood celebrities feared her. William Randolph Hearst adored her. Between 1915 and 1960, Louella Parsons was America's premier movie gossip columnist and in her heyday commanded a following of more than forty million readers. This first full-length biography of Parsons tells the story of her reign over Hollywood during the studio era, her lifelong alliance with her employer, William Randolph Hearst, and her complex and turbulent relationships with such noted stars, directors, and studio executives as Orson Welles, Joan Crawford, Louis B. Mayer, Ronald Reagan, and Frank Sinatra--as well as her rival columnists Hedda Hopper and Walter Winchell. Loved by fans for her "just folks," small-town image, Parsons became notorious within the film industry for her involvement in the suppression of the 1941 film Citizen Kane and her use of blackmail in the service of Hearst's political and personal agendas. As she traces Parsons's life and career, Samantha Barbas situates Parsons's experiences in the broader trajectory of Hollywood history, charting the rise of the star system and the complex interactions of publicity, journalism, and movie-making. Engagingly written and thoroughly researched, The First Lady of Hollywood is both an engrossing chronicle of one of the most powerful women in American journalism and film and a penetrating analysis of celebrity culture and Hollywood power politics.

4 out of 5 stars The Queen of Smut.......2007-04-11

This book was surprisingly interesting about the life of screen gossip Louella Parsons and her shenanians in tinseltown. I thoughoutly enjoyed it. This would make an interesting movie.

                4 out of 5 stars Not a page-turner, but authentic.......2006-12-12

I grew up the the 1950s and bought every movie magazine with articles by Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper that my meager allowance would afford me. Dr. Barbas has produced an academic, thoroughly researched work (there are a ton of footnotes)with the ring of authenticity to it. Fingers crossed that she devotes equal time to Hedda Hopper.

3 out of 5 stars Gossip Queen To The Star System of Forties........2006-10-21

In the Fifties, there was a rivalry of sorts between gossip queens Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons -- take your pick. Ms. Parson was a premier movie gossip columnist until 1960 for the Randolph Hearst yellow journalism media. She was a tough woman who used blackmail when it aided her gossip mongering during the studio control of the industry's publicity; it is thought that she was also involved in the blacklisting of some of the major stars during the McCarthy fiasco.

Working for Hearst, a superego who built a mansion at San Simeon for his mistress, Marion Davies, Louella was involved in every aspect of their lives there on Route 1 of California and L. A. He was a silly old man. Her husband, Dr. Martin died at the age of 61, though his photo showed him looking twenty years older due no less to the kind of lifestyle they lived. She went into decline and relied on alcohol to keep going. Hearst's daughter lived dangerously for a while on drugs before marrying her bodyguard.

Hedda Hopper's popularity was mainly on television although her syndicated gossip columns appeared in Chicago and New York papers, like Landers and Abby. Now, would you believe, the gossip queens are Joan and Melissa Rivers! Who would have thought it? Walter Winchell may have been a columnist back then, but not the gossipy kind like goday's Oliver Reed and Truman Capote. No one was sancasant from these monsters of divulging confidential information about any and every movie actor/actress except for their sexual leaning. That was not allowed in the 30s, 40s, and 50s by the big studios who kept everyone in the closet and presented false images for most if not all of them.

4 out of 5 stars LOLLY, Hollywoods First Protector.......2006-03-13

I have waited over twenty years for an indepth book of Louella Parsons, and while there were alot of "the usual supects" including the deaths of Thomas Ince and Paul Bern- Ms. Barbas did a great deal of homework and the beginings of Louella's life has stuff I never heard before. While she generously throws in all the contrary things said about Louella's career, she also gives this journalist her due,and does not act like someone pulled her teeth to do it.

5 out of 5 stars Ministry of Fear.......2006-03-10

For Christmas a good friend gave me this exceiting biography (Hi there Mac!) and ever since New Years I've been on a race to finish it. But some books are so good you don't like them to end, and for the past few weeks I've been envying my former self who still had the whole book in front of him instead of a rapidly dwindling few.

Louella Parsons was a woman or iron determination who summoned up the inner strength to leave her shame behind in the small town where she'd grown up, and go to New York where nobody would know her. With her she had a second husband and a small daughter, Harriet, who quietly like a pet, watched her mother with a mixture of fondness and venom. I wonder if Harriet the Spy was named after her! It sounds improbable on the face of it but both HTS author Louise Fitzhugh and Harriet Parsons formed part of the same glamorous Lesbian New York underground in the late 1950s, early 1960s, the years of Harriet's inception. Anyhow Louella soon rose to the top of the Hearst newspaper empire by a unbeatable combination of loyalty, native smarts, and an earnest brown-nosing that is almost endearing to view today, although how it must have irked her professional rivals way back then.

Samantha Barbas is no John Didion but she lays out the facts with a great deal of skill. She has done her homework (and even conducted a handful of new interviews, such as one with Mamie Van Doren, a Hollywood starlet who claims to have been one of Louella's victims. For Louella (I suppose I should call her "Parsons") was very much a bogeyman, a prop employed by the studio system to keep errant stars in line. She crucified Orson Welles, who had the temerity not only to make a jackass out of Hearst in CITIZEN KANE but also to lie about it to Parsons' face. "It deals with a dead man," he told her when she pressed him about the rumors that KANE was going to be a demolition of Hearst. She never forgave left-wing leaning stars like Chaplin. And yet she had a soft side and people could cozy up to her, particularly the unpleasant songwriter Jimmy McHugh. Samantha Barbas shows us how McHugh "dated" Parsons for years, always stringing her along, never actually taking her emotional needs seriously but palming her off with a ditty called "Louella" which made her feel like a schoolgirl. It's a shame a once distinguished press like UC Berkeley can't afford a proofreader nowadays. Or else Dr. Barbas isn't very familiar with the stars of Hollywood--Parsons' beat--otherwise she wouldn't have written "Frederic March," would she?

But what she's terrific at is discovering the roots and the extent of Parsons' feminism, which went far and wide and early. Even before women's suffrage (1920) Parsons was in there fighting for women's rights, and she did help a lot of women journalists find their way. Good for her, too bad she turned into a tragic old harridan figure, half Miss Havisham, half Cassandra, nearly forgotten by the time of her death. I feel sure that THE FIRST LADY OF HOLLYWOOD will remain the standard biography for at least the next few years, for what could supplant it? Anyone writing in the future on Parsons will be like a pygmy standing on the shoulders of a giant.

I hope Dr. Barbas continues to give us more, perhaps next she should turn to the life of Harriet Parsons and clear up the speculations about "Harriet the Spy"?

                1 out of 5 stars Laughably Bad.......2007-03-26

Pretty bad, poorly written book. It's written very much in the tabloid, Geraldo Rivera style. The author frequently uses terms like "killer" and "murderous" when describing AIDS, Freddie's death, or any other topic he can fit them in.

Many so called facts seem to be way off too, like Freddie arriving in Great Britain when he was 14 years old. Most documentation has Freddie arriving when he was 17 years of age.

The author even contradicts his own data. He mentions the Band was told about Freddie's illness just a few months before his death. Later he quotes Brian and Roger saying the band grew closer the last years of Freddie's life, because of his illness they wanted to support him in any way they could.
The author writes that Freddie was a recluse the last years of his life; pages later he writes Freddie continued to work, shop and collaborate with other artists up to his death.

There was a lot of repetitive page filler as well, like several associates of Freddie or Queen describing the same events word for word.
Also, some business associates quotes I'd seen previously were cruder in context in this book. Like a manager describes one of the bands party's and mentions prostitutes were present to take care of anyone's needs. I'd read about the same party, described by the same associate in other books, minus the prostitutes.

It's pretty clear this book was thrown together a year after Freddie's death to make a buck. I guess we can be thankful the endearing but comic cover reflects the content, it reads just like a comic book and due to the large font it's a fast read.
My 1 star reflects I liked the photos (Freddie college photo, Freddie with Mary, early Queen photos, Freddie in Ibiza, FM tribute concert pics, etc).

3 out of 5 stars Surprised at myself, but I give it "3", instead of "1"..........2000-03-26

YES, the author lacks high writing skills. YES, the book is lame and very tabloid-ish. YES, most of the presented facts are questionable. HOWEVER, when I'd read this book in 1993-early 1994, it was the first book about FM, I have ever read. Today, there are many more books about him on the market and much better ones, too. BUT, I did not read this book as a DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY of a great personality, THAT IS WHY I was able to enjoy it... ALL IN ALL, there are plenty of funny (as always) quotes from FM (true or not..."Who cares, darling?" as the Man himself would probably say), as well as other funny anecdotes from people around him.

2 out of 5 stars Lame and Poorly Written.......1999-04-15

The book starts pretty well, but the author's poor writing style comes through very early on. There are sections that are quite repetitive. The facts are questionable. If you must have it, it's on the shelves in the Manchester, England airport book stores, in case you know someone there. I'm glad I read it, but I'm also glad that I remember the author's name so I know to avoid his works in the future.

At least he doesn't shy away from the sensitive topics.

Maybe the definitive biography has not yet been written.

                1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money..........1999-01-24

This book was more like a bad term paper than an in-depth history of one of rock's most influential and exciting stars. Very disappointing.

                1 out of 5 stars tabloid-esque.......1998-06-30

This book does nothing for Freddie Mercury fans. It just doesn't have any real facts or substance. Much of the text is written like "Freddie must've thought..." or "This shows his blah blah". Much of Sky's statements are based on his own opinions that are supported by quotes that Freddie may or might not have said. This leaves too much room for conclusions drawn that are out of context.

Don't get this book. It does have some nice pictures but overall, the book is too tabloid-esque and a major disappointment.

Um, there's a reason people order Chinese food, Thai food, Italian food, Mexican food, Greek food, Japanese food, Indian food, and so on... yet you never hear someone excitedly say "Ohh... let's order British takeout!". Yeah. British food isn't exactly a delicacy, so why would one want to get a British cook book?

As a 'queer' book, this falls flat.

This is a british cookbook - don't be suprised if some of the contents have to be searched for. David Shentons illustrations are superb! A must for queer kitchen qweens!

This is a nice idea, but well, it just doesn't work- quite a few of the recipes feature odd items or measurements not used in the U.S. (not quite sure where some were from??), editing is nice- but the cliques seem to fly a bit heavily. I think I would rather buy a good cookbook from a gay chef (I know, who would have thought..) than waste my time with this one...If you need ideas THIS bad, go surf for them...

                    Book Description

Broadcast News Writing, Reporting, and Producing, Fourth Edition examines the skills, techniques, and challenges of writing and reporting for broadcast journalism. Along with complete coverage of the fundamentals, the text presents up-to-date examples and issues through actual scripts and interviews with the people who bring us the news.

The book emphasizes real-life situations, and examines the problems that reporters, writers, assignment editors, and producers face every day. Each chapter contains exercises for writing, review, and discussion so that students can learn and apply what they've read.

This new edition contains material on embedded journalists, their preparation (journalist boot camp), including the late CNN reporter David Bloom, and their impact on the news. It includes new examples of tabloid journalism and expanded information on the state of terrorism and crime reporting today.

Ted White has been a broadcast journalist since starting his career as a copy boy for The Voice of America while in college as a journalism student. He worked for CBS, ABC, and CNN as well as other major radio and TV stations in NYC where he was a writer, reporter, editor, and producer before becoming a college professor at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
