A bit of a disappointment. Anecdotal and reflective, but not really informative about how the process of creativity works. A little bit scholarly and pedantic.

I was reffered to this book by my mentor. He is aging but took on the challenge of teaching a young man the art of stone carving. I am not a big reader. Of the many books he had me read that year, this one was the most influential. The basis for any advancement can be found with in its covers. IT has helped me with everything from goal planning, to the importance of building off what others have left. Read it! Memorize it!

Top book. Buy it........1999-12-01

This book is a survey of the creative process over artists and scientists across different fields and times, including Mozart, the mathematician and philosopher of science Henri Poincare etc. The book gets to the heart of what life is all about.

A "must" read in one's life and quest.......1999-05-30

I'm very touched to find this book again as i browsed through the net, 25 years after i first bought it in a flee market in New York. The essay by Henry Miller, literally blew my young artist mind back then. It inspired me to follow on his crazy steps. I quit my civil service job(without official leave) and went to Paris ,where I lived for ten years. I read and re-read that essay on creativity and it just kept giving me the courage to step further into the unknown, thus changing my life completely.

Timeless Insights Into the Nature of Creativity.......1998-10-29

Like a previous reviewer, I read this book when it was simply "The Creative Process". I was just a kid and bought the paperback version when they were much less expensive. I still have it and it is falling apart now. It is a book to keep. A previous reviewer mentioned his (her?) favorite parts. I can only add mine to that list: Mozart describing the "completeness" of his musical idea; Thomas Wolfe's "Story of a Novel" in which the writing of a novel is as gripping as the novel itself; R. W. Gerard, whose "Biological Basis of Imagination" breaks down the barriers between Gestalt Psychology, Biology, and esthetics; the concreteness of Stephen Spender's poetry; glimpses into the tactile imagination of Henry Moore; Max Ernst on the art of the collage. Lots of content in a small package.

Story Behind the Book

A team of youth pastors approached Multnomah with the need for a visual pivotal-issues series for teens—something that would enter into their world and confront the stuff they actually think, talk, and wonder about every day. These products called for a “back of the school bus” feel. Kids don’t get spoon-fed answers; they simply get enough cards on the table to create their own conversations. Now youth pastors everywhere can’t seem to hand out enough of them!

Probably the best book out there on the subject.......2006-09-26

When it comes to the subject of sex, every book out there thats Christian (or sort of Christian, like this one is), typically tells us kids to "Just Don't Do It,' or 'Stop!' or Wait." The first message is always a negative message--NO. What's cool about this book is that it starts out with a postive message, that sex is a good thing. We don't hear that a lot today. Also, the book is pretty funny--like, it starts out talking about how we live in such a sex-saturated society, and what if something out there was talked about as much as sex, something random, like cheesecake. So it's all like the Joy of Cheesecake, or Cheesecakes gone wild, or the 40-year-old cheesecake, or whatever. That's a good point the author makes, becuase it's like, give me a break. Everywhere you go, people are always talking about sex. So this is a good book. It just lets you figure out stuff for yourself.

Great Series for Teenagers!.......2006-09-15

I have a teenage daughter and this book was perfect for her. I read through it first before giving it to her and I really liked how the author talks directly to the teen. He talks their language and offers hard facts but keeps the book Christ-centered. I think teens still have a tendency to have short spans of attention and the variety of each page keeps them interested and allows the information to sink in. Congratulations to the publisher and the author, Marcus Brotherton, for presenting teens and youth workers with a new way of looking at tough subjects. I look forward to ordering the rest of the FlipSwitch series books.

get this for your teen or youth ministry.......2006-09-08

Put this book in the hand of teens who wrestle with the hyped-up message that sex is casual, means nothing, and there are no consequences. It's truthful, right where a teen lives, and it's easy to read in one setting. In fact, when you start reading you just keep on going because it's that real. exploring our inner selves through film.......2005-05-10

Many counselors and therapists may informally make use of movies to help people explore important psychological issues. "The Motion Picture Prescription" lists "200 Movies to Help You Heal Life's Problems", as the subtitle puts it, with brief synopses of the films, short lists of "healing themes" in them, and comments about the key story elements.

For example, Solomon writes about "Rain Man" (with Dustin Hoffman as the autistic savant brother to Tom Cruise, unknown to him for decades): "Some families keep secrets that eventually come to light, leaving those who are still alive to deal with the legacy of the family lies. There's no room for secrets in a loving relationship... Can you see Charlie [Cruise] was taking his anger out on Raymond [Hoffman] when he was really feeling hurt and sad over his father's abandoning him?"

Also included is a chapter with specific, usually common-sense suggestions, and an index of the 200 films in various theme categories.

Gaining Insight About Life at the Movies.......2000-11-23

Reading this book helped me see into an issue that perplexed me in life: why helping others could be my way of using others to meet my own needs. By watching When A Man Loves a Woman, I could see how a 'fixer' needs someone to fix to feel 'good,' even if that means wanting/needing someone else to stay broken.

It was a painful truth I could not see about myself when it was explained to me, but one I could see clearly by watching this film and using the cues offered in this wonderful book.

Of the many valuable insights I gained about myself from this book, one other stands out. I'd spent a lifetime listening to ernest friends explaining why my esoteric, off the wall humor was 'off-putting' to people who didn't know me. Watching a film with a character who sat in the background making esoteric, off the wall comments, I finally understood in a deep, clear, embarassing way what my friends had been trying to tell me: I was unintentionally coming across as strange and

disconnected to others.

I believe this book does a great service by bringing therapeutic insights and healing to people who cannot afford therapy. In my case, it also offered a way for me to learn about myself in a quiet way, without feeling a need to defend, explain or justify myself: I was just watching a movie.

As a character comments in When A Man Loves a Woman, 'Denial's not just a river in Egypt.' With the help of this book, I could see truths I'd denied about myself.

I recommend this book heartily to others struggling with life issues.

Self-Help on the Hurry Up.......1998-10-02

I was skeptical when I read the book but when I put the author's suggestions into practice I found it to be a great experience. As an added bonus I got to enjoy some movies that I never would have watched otherwise. The key is to follow the author's suggestions about how to use the movies in one's healing process and not just watch the movie(s). I highly recommend the book particularly for those who want to explore relationship issues.

A very resourceful tool for the journey of life........1998-06-28

This book helped me to understand the complexities of several of my own struggles. I was able to look up a movie with a similiar theme or situation and use it to see the my situation as an observer.

Can movies be used to "Heal?".......1998-06-09

I encountered this gem as a wannabe text book in 1998.

The author makes a big deal out of using movies as a self help device. The problem I have with this book how the author judges the movies he presents. Get a copy and read "Solomon's" description of your favorite movie. It as if he stretches his views and theory's around a movie that just are not there. A case in point is The Great Santini / The Gift of Fury (1979). A coming of age movie with a dedicated Marine Pilot as the father. Gary Solomon treats this movie as Child Abuse. Gary misses the point completely. Once you begin to actually look at the movies he recommends his Prescription falls flat on its face! It is the same self help mumbo jumbo for a buck that hits the book stores every day. I would go so far as to say this is a Toxic book. Toxic in the same way as using aspirin to grow hair on your head.

If a college instructor hands this book to you hand it back and drop the class.

what's with the do-re-me-fa-so...?.......2007-08-16

I've never ever seen a "fake book" format like this with do-re-me-fa-so, etc. Having the words, melody line, and "real" chord symbols as well saves this book. But really, what's with the extra line with the do-re-me-fa-so..? If you're sequencing or playing piano, the complete score for many songs on "Romanza" are printed in THE ADREA BOCELLI SONG ALBUM (Hal Leonard, 2005).

Highly interesting popular history........2001-11-16

The author makes horizontal sections in time recounting then current household technology. He covers heating, lighting, waste removal, plumbing, and major appliances.
Having grown up in a house built in the twenties and several times modified I am quite familiar with the use of anthracite coal for heating, and regular refuse removal including clinkers from the furnace. I hauled many a ton of coal, basket by basket, to stoke the fire and dragged out many an ash can full as a young lad.
On the other hand my father grew up in a house heated only by the kitchen range and a Franklin stove in the parlor. He was born in 1901.
Later we converted to gas and then moved to a house built in 1878 which also had been upgraded to have showers and gas heat. Up until the forties and fifties we had enormous hot air furnaces which depended on natural convection to distribute heat. Post WW II with the use of forced air heating the size of furnaces shrank to the size of a small wardrobe, instead of taking up half the basement.
This work is not much of a technical history but covers enough to carry the story, tracing from the inventions of the 1700s on. By the 1920s the major equipment of the modern home was all developed but was still to be refined and made automatic with thermostats and regulators. And the general use of central built-in air conditioning was not until the late 1950s. Only a few public buildings had chilled air and most of those were movie palaces and theatres which could not be left open to the natural environment.

A highly browsable, NEAT book........2000-02-23

COMFORTS OF HOME is an awesome book that tells (in beautiful pictures as well as words) the story behind all the household conveniences we have grown accustomed to. After spotting this title in the architecture section of my local independant bookstore, I knew I would be leafing thru it for the next several minutes--I love a good illustrated history or technical book. What I didn't know is that just browsing this really interesting volume would lead me to purchase the book. And not just one copy, either. I ordered several copies on the internet for a number of my friends that I know will appreciate the old pictures and the story behind toilets, kitchens, microwaves, etc.

Good job, Merritt Ierley!
