Colorado painter, printmaker, and educator Charles Ewing explores art on clay surfaces in The New Scratchboard. Unfired porcelain clay applied in a thin layer to a support gives a surface that is both absorbent and easily scratched. Images are created by applying and removing pigment. Ewing looks at the long history of clay-surface art and describes the nature of clay-coated surfaces. He presents a staggeringly wide range of pigment that media artists can employ on scratchboards, including graphite, colored pencils, charcoal, ink pens, watercolor, acrylic, gouache, oil, etc. Application and removal tools are equally diverse. Chapters about using India ink and color on white clay surfaces include demonstrations and exercises, and Ewing also provides extensive demonstrations of printmaking techniques such as relief, intaglio, and lithography. The book is exhaustively illustrated by a wide range of artists who have exploited the easy versatility the clay surface affords. Ewing's own work portraying horses and animals from the wild on inkboard reflects a mastery of line, form, and rhythm; his black-and-white rendition of four dancing ravens, for example, is simultaneously amusing and realistic. Any artist is sure to find a captivating technique from the wide media illustrated, each with its own unique characteristics. Although saturated with technique, the book celebrates experimentation, which is perhaps best captured in its being "dedicated to those with a 'What if...' curiosity that always prevents them from exactly following a recipe." --Mary Ribesky

Book Description

Artists looking for a fresh approach to their work will enjoy this rich resource offering complete instruction on the dynamic art form known as scratchboard. The book outlines the long history of the art, from petroglyphs, sgraffito, and scrimshaw to the state of the medium today, pointing out new surfaces, tools, and methods. Basic techniques are explored, such as scratching on an ink-blacked surface and applying ink or acrylics on a white clay surface. Other methods are reviewed: airbrush, gouache, watercolor, oils, tempera, and colored pencils.

2 out of 5 stars So So!.......2006-11-02

Should this book be titled The New Scratchboard? It really is'nt what I would say scratchboard is about, although it has plenty of nice color artwork done on claybord it only has 20 pages on scratchbord and thats using the authors technique of value scratching not high contract scratchboard that I like. (personally I dont think his stuff is that great) If you looking for a book on scratchboard dont get this. Buy Mastering the Art of Scratchboard. If your looking for a book on claybord then be my guest and buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Not what is expected.......2003-06-30

I must admit that, after I recived my book,I thumbed through and was amazed at the artistic renditions that I saw on the pages. I was excited to delve into The New Scrathcboard and learn the techniques and practices that helped to produce such fine work.

When I actually started to digest the content, I soon realized that this book was not really about my favorite method(scratchboard), but more about the medium Clayboard. I have always thougth of scratchboard as a type of art or technique rather than a medium on which different artistic styles can be practiced.

There is actually very little emphasis on scratching in this book, other than the acknowledgement that scratching brings out the light details on various pieces. While impressive, the content does not instruct to the level that I was hoping.

The message of the book can be summarized very simply..
"If you paint in oils, try this on Clayboard. If you paint with watercolor, try it on Clayboard. If you use pastels, try it on Clayboard. If you use most any medium, try it on Clayboard, which by the way, can be coated or uncoated with India inked and scratched away to reveal highlights."

Overall, the book is very colorful and inspiring. It may get the juices flowing to try new methods on Clayboard, but it does not live up to it's title. I would rename the book "The Versatility of Clayboard".

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for experienced painters to expand horizions.......2002-04-29

This is a wonderful book for experienced painters with that want to expand their horizons or for anyone who wants background information on clay-surface techniques. It shows how a wide range of painting and drawing techniques can be used in conjunction with scratchboard techniques to create a stunning array of results on these very versatile surfaces.

The book starts out with background information on clay-coated surfaces including history, and the types of surfaces and their characteristics. It then covers application and scratching tools. A basic vocabulary and an overview of various mediums that can be used on them are also here.

Several sections highlighting different surfaces and mediums follow. These include ink-coated clay surface, India ink on white clay, color medium on white clay and printmaking with the clay surface. Each section includes at least one demonstration of a work in progress from start to finish. The printmaking chapter is the largest and includes eight demos. These demonstrations are meant to showcase a general technique rather than create an identical copy of the work.

My favorite part of the book is the beautiful artwork throughout. I may even buy a second copy to cut out and frame some of this vast array of gorgeous art. Captions for each piece include artist, title, size and a basic description of techniques used. My favorite is "Madame Butterfly", a whimsical piece that combines acrylic airbrush with scratching techniques. I also loved the many black and white wildlife images.

There is a great material resource directory and a helpful index in the back. I admit I have not really tried any of the techniques shown here. I think they are a bit above me as a beginning artist. I would definitely buy the book again though just for the example images and the inspiration they provide to encourage me to develop my own skills.

4 out of 5 stars Is it really about scratchboard?.......2002-03-16

I bought this book online, without having physically seen it before. For this reason my first impression was not the best. In fact, at first glance it didn't appear to contain any scratchboard work at all. Scratchboard, to me, is high-contrast black ink and white clay, with the possibility of color after the black and white has been rendered. You won't find this book geared to my definition. Chapters 3 and 4 contain the majority of the "black and white" pieces. Chapter 3 is small and deals pre-inked clay surfaces (like Clayboard Black). It has a few examples of the traditional scratchboard look, but most of them have color added. Chapter 4 is larger and deals with applying india ink to the white clay surface. I have to admit, there are some really nice pieces in this chapter, but rather than looking like scratchboard, they tend to look more like ink and wash. My favorite is the one mentioned in the main review, with four ravens dancing on a fallen totem pole. Very nice.

A careful look does reveal some nice "traditional" scratchboard pieces done on Essdee Scraperboard, but they are few. This book is not about working with Essdee Scraperboard, it is about working with Claybord. Strangely enough, there are pieces that have no scratching at all, including some excellent contributions by Stephen Quiller. I think the book is poorly titled. It should be called Claybord: Clay-Surface Techniques and Materials for Today's Artist. It was written by the inventor of Claybord, and is essentially an instruction manual on how to work with a variety of media on Claybord. I don't have a problem with a book on Claybord. Some might even argue that Claybord IS the new scratchboard. Fine, why not put Claybord in the title? I just think the title should be descriptive of the book's contents.

Since the overview of the contents is explained in the main review I won't go into too much depth. Charles Ewing explains his own development as an artist, his discovery of scratchboard, and the needs that drove him to create a new product (Claybord). He never claims to be a traditional "scratchboarder" and in fact, he says "By traditional scratchboard standards, I was far from being labeled a purist then, and I'm afraid the little purity I had has further degenerated in the intervening years". This book is about very untraditional methods. He does go through a history of using scratches for making art, the development of scratchboard, and an explanation of clay as a surface for making art. He goes on to demonstrate at least some of what is possible with a clay surface. The techniques are well explained and the writing flows well. This is a "picture" book so I have to admit I haven't read it word for word.

Basically, if you lose the expectation that you are going to learn about traditional scratchboard this is a pretty nice book. If enjoy experimentation and the exploration of media and surfaces, you will be happy with what you find. On the other hand, if you are looking for traditional scratchboard instruction you would be much happier with Ruth Lozner's excellent book, Scratchboard for Illustration. It's now out of print so good luck finding it.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Information about Scratchboard Medium.......2001-05-24

This book is awesome in not only covering the little known subject of scratchboard art; but in the quality of artwork, and the highly informative and lovely presentation. A must for anybody who loves to draw and is curious to try the new changes in scratchboard as a professional art panel. Enough info & inspiration for a long time. Good for both beginner and advanced artists.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of printmaking in South Africa, replacing the now outdated monograph by F. L. Alexander. It discusses historically artists who made major contributions within each of the printmaking techniques, giving great detail on contemporary South African art. It is also a handbook on artists working in various mediums and gives full explanations of each work chosen for the exhibition at the 1998 South African National Arts Festival, lists 785 known printmakers born after 1900, and illustrates the work of 89 important artists. It is an essential guide to this important aspect of South African art.

Shaped by Richard Barsam's more than twenty years of classroom experience, Looking at Movies uses students' natural enthusiasm for the subject as a foundation for going beyond enjoyment toward intelligent, analytical understanding of movies. Professor Barsam's clear writing, thorough presentation of fundamental film principles, and unique pedagogical additions to the traditional introductory text—including an entire chapter devoted to analytical writing—ensure that students approach screenings and writing assignments equipped with the analytical tools necessary to be active, insightful interpreters of movies. Looking at Movies is accompanied by two outstanding multimedia resources, the Student website and CD-ROM, both of which are integrated directly with the text.

It was in good shape, and I received it ontime.

          4 out of 5 stars Easily worth a look.......2004-01-03

Barsam's is a welcome addition to the field of introductory film texts, superior in many respects to similar entries (Giannatti, Phillips, etc.). The style is reader-friendly but in no way condescending; the examples are generous and representative of classic as well as current developments; the coverage is comprehensive. Indeed, with the accompanying CD-Rom and Website, the text is a virtual encyclopedia of information about the cinema, thereby justifying its slightly higher price. Moreover, this is the first text that begins to realize many of the media-specific qualities of the subject it attempts to illuminate.

This is a first edition, and understandably there are problems, some admittedly attributable to individual preferences. A few things I've noticed:

          1. The website can be "buggy," at least to a Macintosh operating system. Numerous "Java Script" messages are appearing along with failures to play visual and audio files. Even with the misfires, the website is the most impressive I've ever used in conjunction with a text. Because of it, an instructor need have no apologies about using a text that includes discussions of numerous films unknown to students and impossible to screen in class.

          2. The accompanying VCD contains valuable film examples but unfortunately doesn't include any clips from "Citizen Kane." I would hope that a future edition includes a DVD with Kane and other useful illustrative and instructive materials. Website information and quizzes often have too many technical glitches to make them effective time-savers for a teacher, who now must solve each student's difficulties with the website (the required 8-digit password doesn't help).

          3. Barsam uses much personal and arbitrary descriptive language that subsequently becomes "reified" in the quizzes about the components of film. As a result, the quiz becomes as much about remembering the specific language of the author and textbook as about the properties of a filmic element (equally true of the book's competitors).

          4. The order of topics will not appeal to every instructor. For example, the most basic element of film--the shot--isn't addressed until the discussion of photography in Chapter 4. Also, the attention to previously marginalized films and filmmakers can be quite uneven. African-American issues receive considerable space in several chapters in the book and on the website whereas feminist issues receive a couple of paragraphs. Moreover, there is very little consideration of "auteurism," the enabling and prevailing approach of academic cinema studies.

          5. The author's lack of experience with literary and composition issues is frequently apparent, though to the book's credit ample space is given to student writing. Still, the treatment of point of view in cinema becomes problematic, especially when the author refers to the camera's perspective as "omniscient." Also, the inclusion of an exemplary student essay, while extremely welcome, represents an unfortunate choice, in my opinion, since the essay is somewhat sophomoric, exhibits clumsy writing and omits a thesis(!).

All in all, a promising production by Barsam and Norton. I look forward to giving it a test drive.

5 out of 5 stars a very good and comprehensive introductory book.......2003-09-18

Just got this book and found it to be very well structured, with a comprehensive yet easy to understand language that made the material very compelling. It comes with a cd rom with film clips and it also offers website interactivity that supports and expands on the material covered by the book. The layout is very sleek and although a bit pricey ($ 70), this is what college textbooks go for now, so even at this price this book compares more than favorably to what's out there.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent for a Student.......2007-07-12

I bought this book my sophomore year in college. I was enrolled in a class that had the most boring professor who didn't give any insight into film at all. He just sat back and popped in a movie and left the room. To purchase the text was optionial, and since I am very into film I decided to purchase it. Currently I am a junior at UB in Buffalo, and earning my BA in Film Studies and theory, with hopes of one day teaching a much more interesting college level course then my previous professor. I found this book very enlightening for catching up on what many professors left out or never mentioned. It is pretty much for starters and film fans that are just starting out getting serious. It makes references to classics, foreign, and more culturally "brain dead" college flicks such as Something About Mary. Thats what drew me to this book, it doesn't single out film to be an artsy serious look at film when it doesn't need to be. It pays respect to all types and genres of film, giving credit for what they all brought to the big screen.
The book sums up basic termonology, jobs and history all related to cinema since the start. It can be critized as being to plain and simple at times, but good to be the first book to start your collection of film references and texts. I used to bring this book and long car drives, plane trips and just when I was sitting on my couch during commercials, while using post-its and a highlighter on nearly every page. I would highly recommend this book for someone who wants to familiarize themselves with film technique and study on a basic, yet enlightening level.

          3 out of 5 stars Excellent Effort . . . Excellent Price.......2007-02-11

If you teach at a university, you may know the anxiety of selecting a new text. Can you justify the exorbitant cost? Does the text competently address the basics? Will you be forced to hover over the photocopy machine, creating supplements to a less than adequate text? Here is the scoop on "Looking at Movies" . . .

          The Good:
1.) It is inexpensive. Students will appreciate the price-break.
2.) It is, overall, aesthetically pleasing (which will make students more amenable to your class).
3.) It incorporates often over-looked films (like Fincher's "Fight Club")
4.) It strives to both acknowledge film history while examining contemporary works (contemporary works engage students . . . films from the 1980's, not so much!)

          The Bad:
1.) The examples are slightly too small and a bit washed-out (I think as a result of the paper-stock of the actual text). The publishing company (Norton) should have allowed the examples a larger, lusher format and charged a little more . . . especially when a textbook is dedicated to a VISUAL art!!
2.) Though just released, this text references out-of-print films. For example: Jane Campion's "Portrait of a Lady" has been out-of-print for a while . . . it is currently $79.00 here (in mint condition). None of my students have ever seen this film . . . they cannot relate. This is a problem that should have been caught in editing.
3.) My copy arrived with advertisement postcards stuck in the text. Can you imagine asking your students to pay $50.00 for a text and then have advertisements spill from the pages as though it were Cosmopolitan magazine?! Tacky. (Again, not the author's fault).

          The Not-Quite-Ugly but Not-Pretty-Either:
1.)The "Critical Approaches" and "Applied Readings" sections would have to be excised with an X-acto knife. While some of the approaches are interesting (to me), they are a bit odd for an introductory text (ex. cognitive psychology). I would be uncomfortable with a student thinking that these are the most common/valued approaches to film.
2.)The text is accompanied by two DVDs AND a "Writing about Movies" mini-text. I've never been a fan of the "more is more" idea, but what perplexes me is how all of these components are separate from the text (again, not the fault of the author). Why wasn't the mini-text (53 pages) incorporated into the actual text? "Removed," this mini-text carries little weight . . . it's authority is strangely compromised. Concerning the DVDs: what would have been fantastic is two little sleeves inside the text for them. Instead, here are two DVDs, packaged separately, just rolling around in space (and under dorm beds). Again, psychologically there is a sense of "is this a part of the text or was it some promotional product?" There is a disconnect. It would have been spectacular had these elements been integrated into the text itself: one unified product.

If you are seeking a newer text for your class (or even your own private study), consider Maria T. Pramaggiore's "Film: A Critical Introduction." While your bookstore will charge $80.00 for it, Amazon asks only $68.00 . . . so have your students buy it here!! The examples are lavish, the text informative and concise, and the critical approaches are a bit more relevant to the casual student (gender, class, sexuality, race, national identity etc...).

Some schools impose (or suggest) a textbook-expense cap. If this is your predicament, this text is a good choice. If not, examine Pramaggiore's text and then decide.

An excellent summary and profound analysis of the techniques and interpretation of movies. I particularly like the authors analysis of Casablanca. In addition, the analysis of Little Big Man is seminal in an understanding of Native American portrayal in contemporary film.

                            Book Description

Ace on the River is designed to improve the play of everyone from beginners to seasoned professionals. The unique play-by-play section will challenge readers to think beyond simple starting hands and make better decisions on other streets.
Ace on the River addresses elements of the game that are unfamiliar to many players. Included are chapters on the poker society, money management, family matters and even sex. This complilation of philosophies and real-table scenarios provides a rare chance to see the poker world through the eyes of someone who lives it.

5 out of 5 stars Gritty, riveting, and very well done.......2007-08-20

"If you read all the poker books and become a technical expert on which hands to play and how to play them, you are still likely to end up broke."

If you just want a book on how to play poker, keep looking; there are lots of those. Although this book has play lessons and elaborate mathematical charts, it's more about the life of a pro. I recommend it for everyone with or without professional aspirations. This started out as part of Doyle Brunson's book, but it became a book in itself.

BG discusses cheaters (and he names names! and casinos), deadbeats, critics, his own life and ethos, who to tip and why (that was a real eye-opener!), sex and how it can affect one's game, superstition, tournament strategy, and much more. There is poker etiquette I had not read elsewhere, such as how to win gracefully, and why it's important.

It is illustrated with COLOR plates (how's that for a switch?). It's chock full of color photos of famous players and casinos, like a scrap book. It has an index, plus a separate index for the photos so you can see who's in them.

One caveat: My worst poker days (in terms of losses) started with me reading from this. Every time. Superstition? No, but for whatever reason it put me in the wrong frame of mind to play. (I found it a bit depressing in places.) After a few of those, I would only read it on days I did not play.

3 out of 5 stars A collection of random thoughts.......2007-07-16

I bought this after having read the works of Harrington, Gordon, Sklansky, Brunson, etc. This book is a mixture of Greenstein's thoughts on the poker society in general and some strategy examples. My impression of the book is that it just seems to be a series of random thoughts by the author and that it was not very comprehensive. Each chapter is fairly short and the book is full of color photos that serve as filler material and don't add any value (no captions on the pictures). A couple of points I did like were the points Greenstein made about buying in for the minimum instead of maximum in cash games and his theory to accumulate chips early in tournaments (instead of playing tight early as many others advocate). I would only recommend this as an addition to a comprehensive poker library and not as an early read (it is subtitled as an advanced poker guide).

                            2 out of 5 stars nothing good.......2007-07-09

I have 7 poker books. This one is by far the worst! No good tips, no insight, no strategy. Greenstein rambling on about his career. And it is huge in size and doesnt fit on my bookshelf with all my other books. What a waste.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-06-20

The title says it all. This is one of the best poker guides I've read so far. Barry points out and makes you think about things that you really can't put to words. It helped me a lot.

                            5 out of 5 stars easy read.......2007-05-12

Interestingly enough after reading this book I did not win any of the poker tournaments I played in. Which is sad really, with the high expectation of implementing all of my new tools for no limit poker. But that really was not what the book was meant to do and I am glad because that is what every other poker book I read was trying to do. What Greenstein does and what makes this book so powerful is that he gives a solid foundation for a serious poker player to follow not just at the tables but also with the social scene, family life, and financial side of playing the game.

If you are looking for a get rich quick guide to no limit hold em, you should go read Helmuths book (chances are you will go broke you Jackal). If you want a guide into the world of poker that will explain how to handle almost every aspect of the game then Barry is your man.

Oh and the pictures are cool too!

                              Book Description

This study presents an historical account of the expansion of United States interests in Latin American communications in the first half of this cntury. Particular emphasis is placed on how United States shortwave broadcasting was used as a vehicle for the penetration and dominance of Latin American mass communication systems. This penetration is analyzed in relation to the overall context of the goals and activities of the Good Neighbor Policy of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Conversely, with the development of shortwave broadcasting as a tool of foreign policy, there arose the need to restructure the traditional relations between the broadcasting industry and government. This study describes the process by which the American broadcasting industry came to accept government control and dominance in the field of international broadcasting. Finally, this study attempts to show how such an historical account as this can be used to eluciate the notion of media imperialism.
