The serious potter will find a multitude of great glaze recipes in this practical reference, which presents color samples of more than 700 individual glazes for both earthenware and stoneware clays. Christine Constant and Steve Ogden briefly cover the basics--mixing, applying, firing, health and safety concerns--then concentrate, for the bulk of the guide, on the results that can be achieved by adding various oxides (copper oxide, cobalt oxide, red iron oxide, etc.), glaze stains, and opacifiers to a group of base glazes to produce a tremendous range of color and surface qualities. Each result is clearly shown in a photograph of the sample color chip.

Visual Intro Glaze Formulas; Was Reprinted in a Better Book.......2005-05-31
The complete contents of this book comprise about half of Neal French's "The Potter's Encyclopedia of Color, Form and Decoration: The Comprehensive References for Today's Ceramicist". (The other half is his "Potter's Directory of Shape and Form"). Thus, that book is a better buy than this one. Therefore this book should be downgraded to two stars, but Amazon won't let me change it.
This book contains well organized photos of glaze samples, so that you can see the effects of different combinations, firing conditions and firing temperatures. The samples appear to be close to life size. For me the book is valuable in seeing what a single oxide looks like in various glaze/firing conditions. This is very useful to me for seeing the limitations of low fire kiln, and for understanding the kinds of effects I get when I do high temp firing.
It is not a "how to" book telling you how to apply glaze or ways of decorating ceramics. Its purpose is to give you mastery over using specific oxides for different color/texture effects. There are some quite detailed techical books out there which also cover this, but the visual immediacy of this little book is quite valuable. It is important to understand that each firing situation is different and just because they got a particular shade or texture, it doesn't mean you will too, but it is a good guide to help you figure out what you want to try.
Here are the nuts & bolts of the contents, to help you decide if this is the glaze sample book for you.
For each set of samples, four base glazes are used, two cone 04 low fire glazes (alkaline, lead), and two cone 6 high fire glazes (oxidation, reduction). Except for the reduction firings, all firings are oxidizing, as detailed in the firing section. The top of each column of samples is labeled by base glaze and firing-type, and rows of samples are labeled individually or by row as to ingredients.
The book covers 9 basic coloring oxides: copper, cobalt, red iron, maganese diox, chrome, rutile, vanadium pentoxide, nickel, ilmenite. For each oxide, there is a 6 page spread giving various test samples:
- 1 page of intro comments with example photos of use on pots
- 1 page of firings with different oxide strengths in each of the four base glazes (total of 12)
- 2 pages of cross-blends with the other eight oxides, for each of the four base glazes (32 samples total)
- 1 page (12 samples) of using the oxide in-glaze, under-glaze, & in slip, for each of the four base glazes
- 1 page (12 samples) of using the glaze with various opacifiers, in four base glazes.
The "How to Use this Book" section which is given in the amazon sample pages illustrates the first four pages of each oxide's entry.
Then there are stain samples: a page of four primary color stains in four glaze bases (16 samples), four pages of cross blends to mix intermediate colors (64 samples), two pages of in-glaze, underglaze, and slip coloring samples (32 samples).
Finally there one page of using oxides in a raku base glaze with raku firing (16 samples). This is minimal raku coverage and I would really like to see more.
All in all this is a very useful book. I'm giving it four stars only because I can imagine an even better and bigger book covering this kind of topic with more base glazes, more oxides, more cross-blends, etc. For what it is, it is five stars in quality, but I would like a wider scope.
---
P.S. regarding other reviews:
I can't believe the reviewer who wrote "Useless pretty book" is writing about the same book. Every column and row/sample is clearly labeled as to glaze and firing condition. Along with the 7 glaze recipes on pages 8-9, and detailed firing sequences on pages 12-13, it is very clear how each sample was produced.
Again I wonder the same thing about the people who say they have the book in spanish, and they voted twice, but who can tell if it is really the same book or not since they gave no reasons.
The Potter's Palette Rocks!.......2004-11-24
Beautiful, clear test-tile images are arranged by colorant, firing temperature and atmosphere. Gives a very good sense of the characteristics and uses of the materials found in a typical glaze lab. The Potter's Palette won't solve your glaze problems (there are plenty of books that address crawling, pinholing, etc) but it's uniquely instructive and very inspirational. For the intermediate to advanced potter.
Useless Pretty Book.......2001-08-19
I had to return this book because it is so poorly done. Many of the example glaze tiles didn't even tell whether they were fired in oxidation or reduction. It was so frustrating to see a glaze I wanted to use, but have no idea how to make it . Poorly organized. Nice color pictures, though.
Like the pictures-hard to trouble shoot.......2001-02-25
The thing I love about this book is the visual examples of the results you should expect from your the glaze formulas & varying oxides. The results I have achieved frequently do not demonstrate the same results. That is not unexpected...but this book does not give any suggestions or recommendations for troubleshooting significant differences in results. It also does not allow for differences in clay bodies...expansion rates, etc. I've found the book to be a good general guide as to the impact of colorant combinations, but not much more in practice.

Dazzling colour and shape .......2007-08-23
I am not really sure what people are hoping to find in this book. Like all of Lark's '500 Series' they are simply inspirational, the are not technical nor are they project based or how to, they are mostly gorgeous eye candy. I am not a glass artist, I am lucky to have a few art glass pieces that I have collected over the years but I bought this book purely to marvel at the shapes, originality and astonishing colours achieved by the wonderful artists whoose work is contained within. Truly luscious pieces each and everyone. Not always functional but certainly inspiring.
Superb photographs, Excellent variety.......2007-03-10
If you are a contemporary art glass collector, you will love the hundreds of photographs in this book. You might even discover a new artist whose work you covet! As a learning tool, however, this book leaves something to be desired. Other than the names of the artists and their techniques, plus the object dimensions, there is not a lot of information. It would have been nice to have examples and descriptions of how the techniques are accomplished. But then, the author - the daughter of one of the world's foremost glass artists - would have needed more than 396 pages.
Disappointing.......2007-01-10
Having paged through the excellent "400 Polymer Clay Designs" by the same publisher, I was disappointed by 500 Glass Objects. I was looking for a book full of exciting inspiration for fused glass, and I wasn't particularly impressed by the selection. I returned it.

Book Description
The Passion is a visual portrayal of the last twelve hours in the life of Jesus. Gripping photos taken on the set of Mel Gibson's new film, The Passion of Christ, together with the biblical narratives in the New Living Translation, present the story in vivid detail. A sweeping presentation of the Passion story in powerful images that will enhance the movie experience!
"This is a movie about love, hope, faith, and forgiveness. He [Jesus] died for all mankind, suffered for all of us. It's time to get back to that basic message. The world has gone nuts. We could all use a little more love, faith, hope, and forgiveness." --Mel Gibson, Icon Productions

Nice Book, but More Useful BEFORE the DVD Release!.......2007-02-27
THE PASSION: PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE MOVIE is a nice souvenir book, but now that the DVD is available, you don't really need this book.
When THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST was still in theaters in its original run, I bought several copies of this book, to give to family members. At that time it was very helpful and people were very curious to look through the book, due to all of the news and publicity, whether or not they had seen the film.
Since then, now that THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST has been out on DVD, this book is more for the biggest fans of the film only, since you might as well watch the DVD, instead of look at most of these photos.
Most of the photos do NOT seem to show too much that isn't already in the film. Most of the pages have one small color photo and very minimal text, usually Bible verse quotes. Most photos could use further explanation if someone was not familiar with the Bible story, or had not yet seen the film. There is a VERY SHORT section of SMALL b/w photos at the end of the book that show some production shots that you won't see in the film. Most of the color photos throughout the book look pretty much like what you see onscreen during the movie.
It's a very nice book, but it was a lot more unique BEFORE the DVD came out.
Instead of this book, I would recommend that you first buy the DVD version of the film, especially THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST: DEFINITIVE EDITION, which has both the original full length film and the RECUT version from a year later (5 minutes shorter). (Don't be confused by its poor DVD back cover description which only mentions the RECUT version! The DEFINITIVE EDITION has BOTH versions!) The DEFINITIVE EDITION also has about 140 minutes of Making Of, documentary footage, and 3 different commentary tracks (2 with Mel Gibson), so THE DEFINITIVE EDITION on DVD is the way to go, for about the same price as this book!
A Collection of Torture Photos?.......2005-04-10
Mel Gibson's pornographic depiction of violence, blood, and torn flesh is not for me. It's disgusting and disturbed. There are more respectable and watchable movies made about Jesus and the Bible. The Passion is sheer torture from a gore-obsessed mind.
Wonderfully done!.......2005-02-13
Wonderfully done, like the movie! The pictures are just as touching as the film. The book touches on the most important scenes, the relationship between Jesus and Mary and the suffering He went through in the end. It doesn't fail to point out that Jesus rose from the dead also. This book clearly communicates the purpose of Jesus dying for us and that He is God. It has brought me closer to the Lord and I'm sure has had the same effect on other people. It's also a great way to introduce Mel Gibson's film to friends.
Spectacular Imagery .......2005-02-02
This book captures some of the breathtaking images from the movie "The Passion." Combined with relevant scriptures, both from the gospel and Old Testament prophecies of Christ, the images allow one to really meditate on the suffering of Christ, each step of the way.
The pictures follow his ordeal that began in the garden, as he prays to the Father. Each step is captured in a stunning picture or two. That ends with his death on the cross and then a visual image indicating his resurrection. This is akin to a visual tool to follow the stations of the cross and allow their significance to sink in. In that way, this book becomes interactive as a prayer and devotional tool.
There are also some pictures of the filming of the movie that provide a glimpse of Mel Gibson and the actors setting the stage for the movie.
I think this book is a must-have for anyone who appreciated the movie The Passion or for anyone who is a Christian but was not willing to endure watching the suffering of Christ in the movie. Although I strongly recommend the movie and the book, the book offers a more bearable way to see what he endured and to appreciate his sacrifice for those who avoided the movie.
Where are the memorable images?.......2005-01-07
OK. If you're going to create a pictorial accompaniment to a controversial movie, AT LEAST PUT IN THE BEST PICTURES!!!
"The Passion of the Christ" intersperses stills from the movie with snippets from the passion section of the gospels. But whatever its value as a devotional or meditative aid, it is missing nearly all of the over-the-top images from the movie. There's no snake in Gethsemane; no clear image of Satan; no Jesus hanging off the bridge; no demon children hounding Judas; none of the nastiest scourging scenes; no long stairway to ascend with the cross; no shroud image on Veronica's cloth; no flipping Jesus on his face; no shoulder dislocation; no eye-piercing crow.
Virtually none of the images that stayed with me from the movie are included. I wonder why not? Were these scenes too gruesome when transferred to the printed page? Or were they rendered silly when they could be studied at leisure? I can't figure out Mel Gibson for adding these gruesome scenes to the film. I understand less why he left them out of the book. Weird.

A misguided venture.......2005-09-14
Why would an author who believes Sam Spade to have been created by Raymond Chandler (page 62) bother to write about pulp fiction writers? And, more to the point, why would you bother to read him?
There is little actual information in the book, except for generalities, brief plot synopses and more or less widely available biographical data. There are a few interesting snippets here and there about some lesser figures, but they are hardly worth your 20 bucks.
Kick-[behind] pulp writers from the guy who knows them best.......2003-01-31
I've been a fan of Lee Server's books for a while now (don't miss OVER MY DEAD BODY, a fun and dirty tour of 1950s-era pulp paperbacks), and this book does not disappoint. It's an encylopedia-style rundown of "schmucks with Underwoods," but don't let that stop. Half the fun is flipping the page and finding some other forgotten scribe who deserves to be remembered (and read). Highly recommended.

A staple for Blake's 7 fans.......2006-03-09
I consider this the Holy of Holies for Blake's 7. My copy, obtained at a Barnes and Noble, is sadly showing it's age. It has all the plots, information and even a "synopsis" on who might have survived and who didn't. (Such as "Zen: Dead. Lost when the Liberator broke up over Terminal...", etc. A must have if you like Blake's 7!!
Excellent episode and cast guide, complete series index........1998-10-08
A must for any real Blake's 7 fan! Contains complete information regarding cast, directors, producers, plot summaries and interviews with several cast members and others. Index defines every term used in the series.
