Book Description
Tears of Eros is the culmination of Georges Bataille's inquiries into the relationship between violence and the sacred. Taking up such figures as Giles de Rais, Erzebet Bathory, the Marquis de Sade, El Greco, Gustave Moreau, Andre Breton, Voodoo practitioners, and Chinese torture victims, Bataille reveals their common obsession: death.
This essay, illustrated with artwork from every era, was developed out of ideas explored in Erotism: Death and Sexuality and Prehistoric Painting: Lascaux or the Birth of Art. In it Bataille examines death-the ""little death"" that follows sexual climax, the proximate death in sadomasochistic practices, and death as part of religious ritual and sacrifice.
Georges Bataille was born in Billom, France, in 1897. He was a librarian by profession. Also a philosopher, novelist, and critic he was founder of the College of Sociology. In 1959, Bataille began Tears of Eros, and it was completed in 1961, his final work. Bataille died in 1962.
Customer Reviews:
why the fuss?.......2005-06-06
I cannot understand why the fuss over this book. The text is disappointing: repetitive, opinionated, insubstantial, more like desultory notes than anything else. The images are all black-and-white and poorly reproduced, and again repetitive and disconnected.
There is too much horror in it. Bataille associates violence, horror, terror, pain, cruelty, with eroticism, madness, ecstasy, the sacred. Perhaps intense cultivation of pleasure creates a corresponding accumulative cultivation of pain. Why should this be so? I don't know except that we have what it takes to explore and we can explore in all and any direction. It's as simple as that.
It's possible to write books and essays that are lucid and meaningful and it's possible to write "The Tears of Eros".
An exploration of value through excessive experience.......1999-06-04
The Tears of Eros is a fitting culmination of Bataille's search for value through excess. Although Bataille addresses many of the themes touched on here in greater detail in earlier works (Eroticism, The Accursed Share), The Tears of Eros is notable for the significant amount of artwork included to illustrate the connection Bataille develops between sex, death, expenditure, and sovereign value. This is a "must-read" for any serious student of contemporary philosophy and--for that matter--any who would insist that value resides elsewhere than in a petty, bourgeois individualism.
Extraordinary treatment of sex and death, emotions and words.......1997-09-02
It is from woman, we come and to woman, we return because we all have both aspects in our being...female and maleness

Try eBay.......2007-07-01
After about six months of waiting for Amazon and searching I just found two mint-condition copies of this issue on eBay and BIN'ned one. This is the first Gemstone issue in the series and apparently the only Gemstone issue that ever sold out. Gemstone doesn't seem interested in reprinting it and it's unlikely that Amazon will ever get their hands on new copies to sell.
Outstanding Product But Availability Nil!.......2006-10-20
I've had this item on order from Amazon for two years! I keep getting messages from Amazon that the time of availability keeps getting pushed back. Unfortunately, I very much doubt that this book will EVER be published again, as Gemstone have informed me that they have no plans of re-releasing this issue. :-(
Book Description
An episode-by-episode look at the series, covering every show in each of the seven seasons with each episode broken down into recurring categories to analyze the themes of the show, unearth pop culture and soundtrack information, serve up the best lines of dialogue, expose continuity errors, analyze the show's subtext and serious issues - all in a style that captures the unique humor of the show.

Remains the single finest BUFFY viewing guide available.......2006-06-28
If you can get only one viewer's guide to BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, this is definitely the one to get. Compared to the other guides, this one contains a lot more of the information you most want to have and is simply a lot more fun. If you have a question about some music used on the show (usually by bands appearing at the Bronze), this will have it. If you want to know where you have seen a performer before, this is likely to have it. If you want to check for cultural allusions this will have a majority of them (though curiously there is no mention that the sixth season episode "Older, and Farther Away" had its central plot line lifted pretty straightforwardly from the Luis Bunuel surrealist masterpiece THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL, in which a group of people at a party mysteriously find themselves unable to leave). On top of all the sheer information the book contains several fascinating essays that offer interesting insights into BUFFY, as well as an extensive though by no means exhaustive bibliography on all things Buffy. For a more extensive bibliography one should consult the various reference links at www.slayage.tv.
BUFFY was such an astonishingly rich show that a guide such as this will greatly enhance the viewing process. Sometimes thinking about one thing that has happened will cause you to miss something else that is happening after that. The best way to approach a show as complex as BUFFY, especially one that is so rife with cultural references, is to go at it from a variety of directions: reviewings of the episodes, reading essays, listening to commentary, reading script books, and reading through viewing guides. This one is widely considered by many fans to be the finest one available. I certainly agree with this assessment. It does bring a British perspective on the whole affair, but that is actually a strength, since it calls attention to details that might not immediately strike an American as noteworthy.
What a right load of old rubbish that last review was.......2005-09-30
This is as good as guide to any TV show as I've ever seen - lots of detail, care and obvious attention. It doesn't include any photographs because it's an unofficial guide and, obviously, there's a copyright issue. If you want nothing but photos there are plenty of magazines out there with nothing else but. if you want 720 pages of text about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this is the book for you.
Not at ALL what I expected!.......2005-07-20
Personally, with all the hype, I thought it would have been better than it is. In size and content, it looks more like a Stephen King novel than a BtVS information book. Sure, it has a lot of text in it, but personally, most of the information is fluff and can be found in better context in books like "The Watcher's Guide" series.
I just couldn't get into reading through this book. The sections on each episode are too short, badly written and it contains a lot of sections and information about each episode that frankly nobody really cares about or would have even thought about. If you took out all of the useless information and fluff, not counting the MIS-information (I found TONS of false information that I was able to prove by popping in my DVD and watching the episode... mis-quoted lines credited to characters that did not even say them, etc) the book would be VERY thin, and would be lucky to be classified as a coffee table book!
All of the other books on BtVS at least have photos, humor, etc, but this book is just 100% text... it is literally like reading a novel! If you are a SUPER fan and simply want every book about BtVS, then by all means purchase this, but at just under $10, I personally think it was not worth the paper it was printed on!
Lots of info, maybe a little hard to get into.......2005-03-25
I bought this book locally because, the last time I checked Amazon, it was on a 1-2 months wait here- big mistake because The Complete Slayer is now available in a reasonable time at a good price.
I've just started reading it and find that just about everything seems to be covered, even the original movie starring Kristy Swanson. You'll find original US & UK broadcast dates, episode cast lists, music, descriptions and quotes for each episode as well as a lot of interesting trivia bits. That last part surprised me because this isn't even Topping's Slayer trivia book. The man obviously loved the show, there's so much here (I guess he got it right, I do remember a little item or two that aren't mentioned in this book)the problem is that, at 702 pages, it may be a little hard to get into for a casual reader.
The Buffy Bible.......2005-03-09
What is left to say in the world of Buffy The Vampire Slayer?. Not a lot. But Keith Topping's latest, and assumably last, offering in the Buffy world, is the last one tome of Buffy lore that every fan, or newbie, must own. Topping has already least 3 previous editions of this book covering a new season as it comes along. Some may of felt gyped to shell out bucks for each new installment, when a lot of it was stuff you had already purchased and read in the other editions. But now, Mr. Topping has released his work on the Buffy universe in one big, cohesive book that has it all. One stop shopping, folks. There have already been numerous books on the show, but only a few of a fan's critical review of the material. Nikki Stafford's "Bite Me"
book was a lot of fun, but I believe that Topping's "Slayer" tops them all. In fact, I will go so far as to say that his book is THE one to have. Unlike one other one I read recently, Topping clearly loves this show. Through the good times and bad. And even in the bad times, he is more thoughtful, intelligent, and respectful than other critics. He is never too harsh, and when he has strong opinions on something, they are fair, mature, and still contain a wisp of praise even when he doesn't agree with something. But more than anything else, Topping writes with a sure hand that displays his genuine love and affection for the show, it's characters, and everyone involved in it. And to top it all off, he is quite witty and the book is filled with a number of witty and funny comments. The book is all about the episodes, and Topping has gone into each one with wonderful and insightful detail. Like most of the other books, Topping's episode guides have different categories. First, of course, is the plot of each episode itself. There is "Dudes And Babes", a funny part that pinpoints when a male or female of carying degress of hotness or importance is mentioned. "A Little Learning Is A Dangerous Thing" is a section that points out something in an episode where someone has learned, or is learning, something. "School Dinners" I think pretty much describes itself. "It's A Designer Label!" showcases the wardrobe that our characters are wearing. "References" is pretty much explainable. Pop culture references mentioned on the show. Then there is "Bi**H!", my personal favorite, that points out some of the more catty coments on the show. Mostly coming from either Cordelia or Buffy. "Valley-Speak" has dialogue spoken on the show with that oh so hip slang. "Logic, Let Me Introduce You To This Window" is one of many fans' favorites. A section that picks out moments or situations that are mistakes, or just don't make any sense. "Quote/Unquote" is basically a part that brings out some of the best lines in an individual episode. "Notes" is Topping's part of the episode where he has his final word/say and critique of the episode. "Soundtrack" is what you think it is. Music, and the artists playing it, in an episode of the show. There are a few others that pop up here and there. Ones like "Awesome!" that points out a really cool moment in an episode. "You May Remeber Me From Such Films..." tells you where you may of seen some of the more familiar people who appear in an episode. "Denial, Thy Name Is Joyce" is a funny one where the author pinpoints Mrs. Summers' cluelessness to the world around her, before findout her daughter is a vampire slayer at the end of season two. What's great is that Topping also has a section on the Buffy novels, with a minor critique of them too. That is something that would go under his "Awesome!" category. The only thing this book doesn't have, and would of been better with, is a bit of color. And pictures. But who's picky?. Topping has delivered what I, and many others, believe to be the number one Buffy book. I can't imagine anything more coming from him, or anyone, on this subject, so this book is a mighty amazing one to go out on.
Product Description
This book was written for the student who wants to learn to play flamenco guitar correctly in the shortest time possible. A fanciful historical essay on the origins of the flamenco style begins this modest 32-page volume. Several of the most common techniques are used in the various introductory pieces, including various forms of rasgueos and the 4-note tremolo. Customer Reviews:
Flamenco on a steel string guitar? I don't think so..........2005-07-07
This is a very strange book - flamenco is not played on a steel string guitar, but the accompanying cd uses a steel string. That says a lot about the quality of this book. The pieces don't sound like flamenco and do not adhere to any of the flamenco forms, e.g., soleares, tangos, etc. Nor is there any emphasis on rhythm or accent, which is necessary to flamenco. Skip this book and get one of the many excellent books instead, such as "Play Solos Flamenco Guitar with Juan Martin Book, CD, and DVD", Gerhard Graf-Martinez's "Flamenco Guitar Method", and Juan Martin's flamenco guitar method "El Arte Flamenco De La Guitarra". Martin's flamenco solos book is filled with excellent pieces for every level of player, and even the simplest of them have a strong flamenco feel about them, with clear rhythms and accents, and excellent preformances of all the peices on both the accompanying cd and dvd.

Book Description
The Frankenstein narrative is one of cinema's most durable, and it is often utilized by the studio system and the most renegade independents alike to reveal our deepest aspirations and greatest anxieties. The films have concerned themselves with demarcations of gender, race, and technology, and this new study aims to critique the more traditional interpretations of both the narrative and its sustained popularity. From James Whale's Frankenstein (1931) through Kenneth Branagh's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), the story remains a nuanced and ultimately ambivalent one and is discussed here in all of its myriad terms: aesthetic, cultural, psychological, and mythic. Beginning with an examination of the narrative's origins in the myth of the birth of Dionysus from the thigh of Zeus, The Cinematic Rebirths of Frankenstein goes on to consider each of the film's many incarnations, from the Universal horror films of the thirties through the British Hammer series and beyond. Moving easily between the scholarly and the popular, the book employs both primary texts-including scripts, posters, and documentation of production histories-and a rigorous, scholarly examination of the many implications of this often-misunderstood subgenre of horror cinema.

Customer Reviews:
A rare and complex tale sublimated into masterful drama.......2000-05-05
The source of "The Fire and the Rain" lies, as is common knowledge in The Mahabharatha. It is an obscure story which a certain sage narrates to the Pandavas, and to a lay reader, passes off as insignificant.
What however, Girish Karnad has done is to transform it into a masterful piece of drama by depicting conflicting human emotions through the characters. It is an excellent combination of the elements--human, metaphysical and supernatural that constitute the core of the play. Karnad successfully makes use of the divine element--especially in the climax where the hero holds a conversation with the Gods, and the final result of the rain pouring on a drought-ridden land.
The play also focusses both on the negative and positive human emotions--jealousy, betrayal, deceit, as well as selfless love (evidenced by the hero and the heroine, Nittilai)and sacrifice. The hero, like most of Karnad's heroes is a man torn between moral righteousness, love and duty. It is interesting to trace this path of the hero to its fitting end.
Karnad has stated that "the play lived in my mind for 37 years" before assuming its present form. It is in short, a splendid culmination of his creative intelligence. As stated earlier, the story is so obscure that none gives a second thought to it, and to translate the same to a play requires immense skill, which is evidenced by the book. It only shows that with each of his play, Girish Karnad is only getting better.
A must read!
A Great Play for Global Audiences.......1999-10-19
This is probably different from other book reviews because I have read the play, and seen an excellent theater production of it too. It is the combined effect of the two that remains in my mind; during both phases the experience was gripping and the effects linger even today.
I have waited for a long time for Girish Karnad to return to his roots in theater, after his sojourn in the world of cinema and commercial movie making. In my opinion, he has exceeded all expectations. The Fire and the Rain is a complex play that weaves contemperory and ancient, Indian and European themes and metaphors.
It is a must read (and perform) GrecoVedic tragedy for theater buffs of all cultures around the world. It is so insightful in its observation of fundamental human behavior, and theatrically so malleable that its relevance to local contexts and audiences, worldwide, will be obvious. It is truly a play for global audiences, transcending political, cultural, and geographic boundaries.
Great Book !.......1999-10-16
I haven't read a better book in recent times. It's another great piece of work from a person so talented. A must read.
