Book Description
Tom Hoyne was a successful artist in advertising when, in mid-life, he was diagnosed with cancer and given two years to live. Confounding his physicians, Hoyne lived for seventeen years, during which he produced some of the most dramatic paintings of America's maritime past. This beautiful volume is the first full presentation of Hoyne's work. More than 100 paintings are reproduced here, almost all of which portray the beauty of the fishing schooners and the terrors and hardships on the waters of the notoriously inhospitable Grand Banks.
In addition to reproductions of his paintings, this book deals with the artist's life and techniques. It discusses the fishing schooners and their legendary designers. It also describes life and work on the most dangerous fishing grounds in the world with fascinating recollections of the great skippers of the fishing communities around Gloucester, Massachusetts, and the small villages that lined the East Coast.
This book, along with traveling exhibition of Hoyne's paintings which begins at The Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia will confirm the artist's place as a master of marine realism. 100 color illustrations.

Down to the Sea in Ships.......2007-09-09
It's so fulfilling to find the complete history behind the preeminent artist life story. The sea and the fishermen [dorymen] who lived that lifestyle are certainly represented in the highest by this artist. It seems that God Almighty allowed this man the extra years necessary to express his great love for the sea and the men who go down to the sea in ships. Wonderfully, completely illustrated!

Wooden Ships and Iron Men.......2006-01-16
I began by admiring one of Thomas Hoyne's paintings and decided to find out more about him. This book is a very comprehensive and beautiful presentation of his work as well as an excellent mini-biography of the man and his background.
My wife and I enjoy picking the book up at a quiet moment and studying one of the works illustrated to look for all the fine details which Thomas Hoyne is noted for.
Great Book.......2006-01-13
I received this book as a gift for Christmas and it is great. I have been a fan of Thomas Hoyne's work since stumbling upon a few paintings of his at the Cape Ann Savings Bank in Gloucester MA. Anyone who is a fan of Winslow Homer's maritime work would enjoy this book. The authors have done their reseach and give the reader some history on each of the ships and schooners in Hoyne's paintings. Makes a great coffee table book.
painttings commemorating and celebrating wooden fishing ships and their crews.......2005-09-07
American artist Hoyne does not romanticize the sea and men in interaction with it - he simply paints it. Yet his maritime paintings are more than plain realism, though they arise out of it. By angles of wave-tossed ships, contrasts of white splashes of spray and darker sea depths, near and distant objects, sails caught by wind to make different shapes, the casually strewn, but ready gear, and the rugged garments and practiced movements of the seamen and their calm, but focused expressions, Hoyne conveys the different facets of the natural element of the sea and the labors of sailors and fishermen who have grown so accustomed to these that they seem natural parts of the sea. The introductory text includes the bases of the authors' appreciation of Hoyne (basically because they saw in his paintings a realism with soul) and also the better part of a talk the artist gave at the Mystic Seaport Museum in 1983. Hoyne died in 1989, having devoted the last years of his life after being diagnosed with cancer in 1972 and given only two years to live to capturing the time--now mostly gone--when men in wooden sailing ships made their livings fishing in the Grand Banks of the North Atlantic. Full-page pictures of paintings take up most of the pages. But with these, as well as a number of smaller ones with the introductory text, are annotations or essay-like commentaries on the particular painting which often include references to aspects of this passing traditional work. Though not yet widely known, Hoyne is recognized immediately as in the top tier of modern-time maritime painters. This art book is proof of this, and will stir others to be keeping their eye out for paintings of his.

Book Description
As far as is known, Theophilus's was the only treatise on almost all the major arts that was produced during the thousand years of the Middle Ages. In his preface he presents the philosophical attitudes to the visual arts of a thinking man of the time. In his main text, which he divides into three Books, he explains the contemporary techniques of making wall-paintings, manuscripts paintings, stained glass windows, ivory carvings, and various kinds of metalwork. The first references to oil painting and paper occur in the treatise, which also gives the earliest known instructions for making an organ. Theophilus's treatise has been of interest to scholars for some centuries. It was referred to by Cornelius Agrippa in the sixteenth century, and was the basis of an article by Lessing in the eighteenth. The original autograph manuscript has not survived, but the reconstruction of it by Professor Dodwell is now considered to provide its only definitive text: this comprehensive edition includes an English translation on facing pages and full introductory and textual commentary.

The Power of Birthdays, Stars & Numbers: The Complete Personology Reference Guide.......2007-08-02
Love it !!
Very clear and precise, not at all vague or general.
Highly recommend.
Very Accurate.......2007-06-21
Although I truly believe in astrology and don't mean to belittle it, I find this a fun book to whip out at parties where there are unbelievers. It blows there minds to see how accurate the description is concerning themselves and their birthdates... I've found it to be around 95% accurate for the nearly 50 people whom I've read it to.
Seeking more than just a boyfriend?.......2007-06-09
This book is a good place to start. I have had this book for a while but have not commented on how awesome it is! It gets deep into astrology, beyond the surface level. This is not about the general compatibility, this is about your birthday, the stars and the numbers! I found lots of people to love but only 8 soulmate potentials...now I know why soulmates are truly not the easiest to find. I feel optimistic though because now at least I have somewhere to start: people who have the birthdays with soulmate potential. Very accurate book! Five worthwhile stars!
* Worth Adding to Your Astro-book Collection *.......2007-02-14
I bought this book several years ago and still consult it from time to time. It has personality profiles for every birthday of the year and is an easy read with a lot of information. That being said, I don't find it nearly as accurate or fascinating as the "Secret Language of..." series. The "Secret Language of Birthdays" is set up on the same premise: astrological/personality profiles for every day of the year, but it is so much more accurate and with less information. This book is a bit wordy, but still a good read and worth adding to a collection. Please don't leave out the Secret Language series, though... if you're a true astrology fan you would be missing out if you don't have this trilogy of books.
Good Food For The Soul.......2006-08-31
Very informative and precise book to have in your library. I was very impressed with how much information it contained on Birthdays and Stars. I would recommend this to anyone who definitely believes that we cross over to the other side.

Book Description
When Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton sat at the piano in the Library of Congress in May of 1938 to begin his monumental series of interviews with Alan Lomax, he spoke of his years on the West Coast with the nostalgia of a man recalling a golden age, a lost Eden. He had arrived in Los Angeles more than twenty years earlier, but he recounted his losses as vividly as though they had occurred just recently. The greatest loss was his separation from Anita Gonzales, by his own account "the only woman I ever loved," to whom he left almost all of his royalties in his will.
In Dead Man Blues, Phil Pastras sets the record straight on the two periods (1917-1923 and 1940-1941) that Jelly Roll Morton spent on the West Coast. In addition to rechecking sources, correcting mistakes in scholarly accounts, and situating eyewitness narratives within the histories of New Orleans or Los Angeles, Pastras offers a fresh interpretation of the life and work of Morton, one of the most important and influential early practitioners of jazz. Pastras's discovery of a previously unknown collection of memorabilia--including a 58-page scrapbook compiled by Morton himself--sheds new light on Morton's personal and artistic development, as well as on the crucial role played by Anita Gonzales.
In a rich, fast-moving, and fascinating narrative, Pastras traces Morton's artistic development as a pianist, composer, and bandleader. Among many other topics, Pastras discusses the complexities of racial identity for Morton and his circle, his belief in voodoo, his relationships with women, his style of performance, and his roots in black musical traditions. Not only does Dead Man Blues restore to the historical record invaluable information about one of the great innovators of jazz, it also brings to life one of the most colorful and fascinating periods of musical transformation on the West Coast.
Customer Reviews:
Jelly Roll Morton--Only in America!.......2003-02-12
WOW. After Alan Lomax's _Mr._Jelly_Roll_, this is THE book to get to understand the most boastful musical genius to grace the 1st half of the 20th Century. Jelly Roll Morton claimed to be the "Father of Jazz", and it seems certain that if he wasn't it's father, he was at least waiting in the delivery room at it's birth. This book covers the critical "lost years" of 1916-1922, and has a lot of material that escaped Mr. Lomax's attention when his book was published in 1950--in 53 years, enough has surfaced to justify a treatment like this, and Morton certainly deserves it. Until the transcriptions of his complete Library of Congress Recordings are published, this and Mr. Lomax's book are crucial to understanding this almost-forgotten genius, to whom modern music owes so much.
Insight into a Complex Man.......2001-06-26
Jelly Roll Morton, the self proclaimed "inventor of Jazz," remains one of the most complex figures in American music. Largely forgotten by the time of his death, Morton had pioneered the early New Orleans style jazz on record and seemed to be on the comeback trail and to be experimenting with the dominant swing style of the 1930s. Pastras provides an insight into Morton by examining his years on the West Coast(roughly the late teens to early twenties and then again in the early 1940s). The first period was among Morton's most satisfying both musically and personally, and the second seems to indicate an attempt at a comeback. Pastras sheds light on Morton's relationships with his godmother and his long time companaion Anita Gonzales and in the process examines the roles played by voodoo and "passing for white" among the Creole community. While the contributions of this book are many, one of the main thrusts is the often conflicting and, at times untrustworthy, nature of oral history as evidenced by Alan Lomax's previous oral history biography of Morton. In the end Lomax's book is more folklore than history. However this does not negate Lomax's contribution, but rather illuminates the pitfalls of not balancing oral history with other evidence if such evidence exists. It is Morton as he wished to present himself to the world. Pastras' text is not only interesting but instructive to those dealing with oral history, but the average reader may want to start with Lomax's book and then move to Pastras' more compelling investigation.

Book Description
During the last half of the 20th Century the pursuit of the American Dream includes the quest for open space. The result is the suburbanization of America as people leave the city for the fresh air and better schools as well as less traffic and fewer people. Editors Jane Shaw and Ron Utt examine the public policy implications of America's race to the suburbs. Full chapters are devoted to issues such as zoning law reform, traffic congestion and the free market vs. government solutions to suburban sprawl. Also included are in-depth analyses of the lessons learned from smart growth initiatives in Atlanta and Portland.

A Guide To Smart Growth examines sprawl in detail, explaining which solutions work, which ones don't, and why.
Customer Reviews:
Buyer Beware.......2003-04-09
This book is a poorly written and factually "challenged" libertarian diatribe, trying to pass itself off as Smart Growth. I was fooled by the misleading title and mistakenly ordered this book, which contains chapters extolling the role of the automobile in society, and containing some really intriguing ecological work describing the overpopulation of deer in suburbia as evidence of "wildlife diversity". This publishing company is a front supported by "free-market" supporting industry (read: no bothersome regulatory laws) which produce pseudo-science tracts such as this one.
mostly hypocritical rubbish.......2002-10-16
Because this book was published by the conservative Heritage Foundation, I thought it would be pro-free market. Not so! This book is all for sprawl-producing Big Government highway spending; its position is that government is good when it subsidizes migration to suburbia and bad when it doesn't. Heritage should have disavowed this book and sent its authors either to the road builders association or to some more liberal institution.
Moreover, many of the essays in the book are shoddily reasoned and/or self-contradictory (whether due to unclear writing or unclear thought I cannot say). Just to name a few examples:
1. Utt writes: "there is little evidence to suggest that federal programs have contributed to or encouraged suburbanization" (p. 104) but also writes that various federal programs "may very well have worsened the plight of many older central cities by undermining the quality of urban living" (p. 102). If federal programs "undermined" urban living, they must have driven people into the suburbs. Ron Utt, meet Ron Utt.
2. Utt writes: "it was the availability of mass transit that largely facilitated the move to the suburbs throughout the 1950s" (p. 100). Just a paragraph earlier, he points out that as early as 1935, cities were shutting down trolley systems for lack of riders. So how can nonexistent transit systems create sprawl? And a page earlier, he suggests that "there is little convincing evidence to connect the growth of highways with the growth of the suburbs." But how can transit cause more sprawl than highways, given that highways throughout the 20th century while mass transit shrunk? And if mass transit caused suburban growth, how come there are so many suburbs with no mass transit?
3. After spending page after page explaining that Big Brother must build us new roads, Wendell Cox writes: "there are indications that the worst traffic congestion may be over. Future traffic growth may be considerably lower than in the past." (p. 60) It the problem is dwindling, why spend public money curing it? (To be fair, Cox, who has done better work elsewhere, does suggest privatization of roads, but I couldn't find evidence that he opposes government road spending if privatization doesn't happen).
Sometimes the essays appear to contradict each other. John Charles complains that Portland has shortchanged road spending (p. 131-32) but Angela Antonelli asserts that Portland has increased road construction by 108.1% between 1982 and 2000 (p. 150).
One or two essays are relatively innocuous, and one or two are not bad (Richard Stroup's essay on the defects of government generally, and Sam Staley's on the problems of zoning). Otherwise, this book would deserve zero stars rather than one.
Follow the money.........2002-06-21
A bit of disclosure here for those too lazy to read the fine print. If you think 'A Guide to Smart Growth' is an unbiased look at the issues surrounding urban sprawl and the 'Smart Growth' movement, think again.
This 'book' is published by the Heritage Foundation, the leading conservative think tank whose dogma is vehemently preached by such conservative spinmeisters as Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh. The author, Jane S. Shaw, is a Senior Associate at PERC, the Political Economic Research Center, whose board of directors is composed of investment bankers, developers, venture capitalists, and members of the financial press.
That being said, I suspect there's more than a little conflict of interest here, considering the very interests that benefit from pro-sprawl development policies are the publishers and promoters of this book. Naturally its filled with questionable statistics by such pro-sprawl cheerleaders like Wendell Cox, who is well known in the urban planning community as vocal opponent of 'Smart Growth' and 'New Urbanism'.
By all means read this book to learn about the arguments of those who wish to destory the 'Smart Growth' and 'New Urbanism' movements. Just don't look for solutions, as their goal is to maintain the status quo, not to support responsible, sustainable alternatives to the suburban growth machine.
Real subtitle: killing ideas, few if any solutions.......2002-05-15
A major disappointment. HEAVILY biased use of statistics to make a case against the "Smart Growth" agenda, bordering on the obvious and ridiculous. Some good points are made and useful facts brought into the lights - but the authors are against much - and provide MINIMAL solutions. A very negative tone throughout the book.
For purposes of full disclosure - here's my only bias....I read this book while vacationing at Seaside, FL. Seaside is my favoriate US beach destination. It's referenced in Chapter 8 - "The Market Responds to Growth." But event here, the authors seem to be against "Traditional Neighborhood Developemnts" like Seaside. Strange - because I find Seaside to be a wonderful place - for exactly the reasons that the designers intended. Everything you want is in walking distance - and summer nights in the city center are like living in a Norman Rockwell painting.
Given the credentials of the various authors, I expected MUCH more in the way of solutions/agenda for the future...
Facts Trump Emotion.......2000-06-12
This is an important and helpful work that provides a compelling, exceedingly well-written guide to the facts about "sprawl." It is a carefully written and documented analysis that explodes the myths put forth by the fringe of the environmental movement. There is much common sense here -- and much that all people of good will who are concerned about the environment will embrace. It's a must read and long overdue.

From the supplier: The advent of the year 2000 (Y2K) poses problems for computerized systems that cannot distinguish dates from the 20th and 21st centuries. Public transit agencies risk damage and disruption to their operations due to malfunctioning systems. The American Public Transit Assn has launched a Web site providing helpful information regarding the problem. The Federal Transit Administration, on the other hand, has made Y2K compliance a requirement for receiving funds. Transit companies must also check whether their suppliers and vendors are working on Y2K compliance.
