Customer Reviews:
The perfect book for beginners.......2007-01-11
If you are just starting out, or are looking for an easy-to-follow instruction book that gets you to *actually put a pencil and paper in your hand* and start drawing in the next five minutes, you MUST have this book! The art of simplicity is not that of being basic in your explanations. It is the highly evolved skill to present to your recipient (in this case the reader) everything you need them to know WITHOUT them getting overwhelmed, becoming frustrated, or feeling that what you are teaching is beyond their abilities. This book is a masterpiece of highly entertaining education. You will watch your skills develop even as you scoff that this can't possibly be this easy to do.
This is a fun book, and while its surface qualities may give the impression that it was written for the "under 8" crowd, nothing could be further from the truth. This is a book that anyone can learn (quickly) from. You begin drawing the most elementary of shapes, which you connect (step-by-step) to more simple shapes which, when you step back from your labors and look is suddenly a recognizable picture. The author does not limit your style at all, but instead starts you off with the basics of style that you will use in many formats of illustration. This is all done with such non-condescending verbiage and format that you will think to yourself "this is too easy," and before you know it, you can draw very complex cartoons.
Cartoon illustration is a staple in our society. From greeting cards to "how to books" and multi-billion dollar corporate logos, cartoon illustrations have become embedded in all aspects of marketing. You see them everywhere, and they seem easy enough to do, but for most people the moment you pick up a pen, something horrible goes wrong in your hand-eye coordination.
I have read a LOT of books on cartoon illustrations and even after absorbing their collective wisdom, I generally limit myself to stick figures to this day. This is one of those rare books that come along quietly and breaks the teaching mold; allowing ANYONE to be able to create fun cartoon illustrations with minutes, and over time to create increasingly more sophisticated illustrations. A must have, and fine addition to any library for anyone who has, or will, ever pick up a pen and try to illustrate a point to someone else.
A methodically crafted instructional guide for young people.......2002-11-15
1-2-3 Draw Cartoon People: A Step-by-Step Guide was created by syndicated comic strip artist Steve Barr as a useful and "user friendly", methodically crafted instructional guide for young people wanting to create their own cartoon figures. Beginning with some expert preparatory advice and a few invaluable cartooning tips, Barr stars with simple, basic shapes and lines which can be quickly copied and expanded upon. The very nicely illustrated instructions continue on for drawing heads, hair, expressions, emotions, hands, arms, boys, girls, grandparents, and characters in motion. Also very highly recommended for budding artists are Steve Barr's two companion instructional books: 1-2-3 draw Cartoon Faces: A Step-by-Step Guide and 1-2-3 Draw Cartoon Animals: A Step-by-Step Guide.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Customer Reviews:
Enh, depends what you're looking for........2003-02-15
It strikes me that there are two kinds of people who might get this book; fans of Gil Kane who know a lot about his work, and fans of Gil Kane who don't. I fall into the latter category, but I suspect that both groups would be dissatisfied.
Basically, this reads more like a biography of Gil Kane than an analysis of his work. And that's what it is: a biography. The specifics of his work are only discussed in captions next to the pictures, usually consisting of statements to the effect of "This panel is an obvious demonstration of his unusual use of perspective."
Um. I'll take your word for it.
See, I don't have a background in art; I recognize that an image is interesting, but often only if it's pointed out to me, and usually I don't have the vocabulary to express my thoughts, which I was hoping this book could help me with. I'm sure what's unique about the image IS obvious to those who have the background I don't, but I doubt those people would gain much satisfaction from the book, unless they enjoyed nodding in sage agreement and admiration. Unfortunately, I don't feel like it had much to offer those of us without that background, either.
As a biography, then, it is cursory at best. As a book of art analysis, there's simply nothing there.
Occasionally the author's adulation grows a tad wearisome as well; I mean, I know you like the guy, since you wrote the book, and I like the guy, since I bought it; so everybody likes the guy, right? We don't need to keep reinforcing the fact. EXPLAIN to me what you like so much about his work instead of continually stating that you do.
Oh, and just a tiny (and probably unfair) pet peeve of mine; why is it that every serious book of comics criticism has to open with an apology, and a long, defensive explanation of how comics are for more than just kids? Maybe if we stop being so defensive about it, people will stop being so narrow. I dunno.
So, this might be a nice coffee-table collection of Gil Kane's art, if you can afford it. Oh, and the interview at the back was great. Gil Kane was a surprisingly articulate man about his work and the times that shaped it. The writer speaks of having spent the last weeks of Kane's life recording interviews with him; why, oh, why couldn't we have seen more of those?
A must have for fans of comic art, esp. of the Silver Age!.......2001-07-25
This is an incredible book that is well worth its price. Herman has produced the only book to date about one of the premier comic artists of the Silver and Bronze ages, and provides both a loving tribute and a thoughtful analysis of Kane's work and influence on sequential art. The book is lavishly and profusely illustrated with examples of Kane's artwork, reproduced from both original artwork and the comics themselves. Herman doesn't just tell readers--he SHOWS us why Kane was one of the greatst illustrators ever to work in the comic book industry, particulary when it came to a complete understanding of dynamic anatomy and perspective. If you're a fan of Kane, any of the characters he worked on (from Green Lantern to the Amazing Spider-Man), Silver Age comics, or the comic art medium in general, you HAVE to have this book on your book shelf. I have no doubt that it's going to stand as the definitive book on the late, great Gil Kane.
One can only hope that Herman or someone of his caliber will undertake similar ventures about those comic legends who so far have not had books written about them , such as Steve Ditko, Gene Colan, Will Eisner, Lou Fine, and so on...

Book Description
A revised edition of the only book to explore the unique brilliance of director Tim Burton's work, including a new chapter on the making of Sleepy Hollow.
Still only in his thirties, Tim Burton has established himself in the past fifteen years as one of the great visionaries of film. With the Batman films, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood, and, most recently, Sleepy Hollow, he has continually broken new ground both visually and thematically, exploring the dark anguish--as well as the dark humor--that animates many of his characters while also creating a densely textured, sometimes bizarre look specific to each film.
In Burton on Burton, Burton talks to Mark Salisbury about his training as an animator at Disney, the importance of design in his films, and the recurring themes present in his work. In this revised edition, he also discusses the influence of 1950s sci-fi and 1970s disaster films on Mars Attacks! as well as how he conceived his highly stylized approach to the content and setting of Sleepy Hollow, his acclaimed retelling of the Washington Irving story that stars Johnny Depp, perhaps the actor most identified with Burton's work. Enhanced by stills from the films, storyboards, and illustrations of set designs for all his major films, Burton on Burton provides insights and information about the man and his work, throwing light on both his unique artistic vision and on the extraordinary films that have been the result.

Complete satisfaction.......2005-10-24
This book covers everything. It's a serious must for film students. I got a complete idea of how to put ideas on the screen and how it affects peoples views. This book never covers up anything. I enjoyed it and it's worth the money
An Awesome Director.......2005-10-12
I've Only been living for a little more than 12 years but i can tell tou how great of a director Tim Burton is.
i havnt read the book yet but i know for sure its gona be good.
think about it this way, tim burton has made all these great movies, like Edward Scissorhands(my personal favorite), the nightmare before christmas, corps bride, and a lot more so if he made all those awesome movies, its gona be good
Where does he get those wonderful toys?.......2005-09-01
"Burton on Burton" acts more like an interview than it does an autobiography. Most of it is written by Burton but it sounds like a transcript of a television special. However, the book is very thorough and presents many interesting anecdotes concerning the inspiration for and production of all of Tim's films up to Sleepy Hollow. They even go so far as to comment on the progres they made on Superman Lives! which was to star Nicholas Cage and be written by Kevin Smith.
For the majority of the book, an italicized summary of a series of events, written by Salisbury, will be followed by a page or two by Burton on that same topic. This is then followed by another paragraph, or so, by Salisbury on a following event and so on and so forth.
Johnny Depp's Prologue, though shorter than expected, is very well written and provides a very interesting look at the actor's view of Burton before he met him, during Edward Scissorhands, after, and then during Ed Wood (and possibly Sleepy Hollow, I can't quite remember). He has some quite nice things to say about Tim and provides an eloquent intro for both the casual Tim fan and the die-hard Burtonite.
Definetly a must for all interested in Tim's work.
A good editorial job.......2005-07-11
Being the Tim Burton fan I am, when I heard of this book I ordered it immediately. The book opens with a foreword written by Johnny Depp (which is more of a `I love Tim because he saved my career' speech) that is told from Johnny's perspective on how he met and admires Tim.
The editorial job Mark Salisbury has made for this book is a very good one. The chapters are divided by movie titles, starting on the first chapter with his childhood in Burbank.
This is basically a compilation of notes, interviews and chats with Tim Burton with notations from the editor. Even though the chapters are named after the movies and are accommodated in chronological order, every chapter covers the period of time in which the movie was being made, so for instance, in the `Mars Attacks' chapter we get to read how close Burton was to start filming a new Superman film with a script written by Kevin Smith.
Everything Burton has done until `Sleepy Hollow' is reviewed and told here, his involvement in other projects, his book (`The melancholy death of oyster boy') and even TV shows (`Family dog' and `Beetlejuice')
For a Tim Burton fan this might not be a very necessary item (a fan should know all this things), however, I enjoyed all the anecdotes and unknown facts presented here, the level of detail given by the editor definitely gives you another vision of how Tim works, in the interviews and chats with him you get to see why is he considered as the genius he indeed is.
Book Description
"Why are people looking for escape in movies? . . . Because it's . . . a form of recapturing not a 'childish' impulse, but a way of looking at the world as if it were fresh and interesting."
Starting his career as an illustrator and animator for Disney, Tim Burton (b. 1958) made his full-length debut with the visually dazzling, low-budget "Peewee's Big Adventure." When it became a surprise blockbuster, studios began to trust him with larger budgets and the whims of his expansive imagination. Mixing Gothic horror, slapstick, pitch-black comedy, and oddball whimsy together, Burton's movies veer from childlike enchantment to morbid melancholy, often within the same frame.
His beautifully designed and highly stylized films including "Batman," "Edward Scissorhands," "Beetlejuice," "Big Fish," "Sleepy Hollow," and "Ed Wood" are idiosyncratic, personal visions that have nevertheless been commercial successes on the whole. In "Tim Burton: Interviews," the director discusses how animation and art design affect his work, how old horror films have deeply influenced his psyche, why so many of his protagonists are outcasts, and how he's managed to make consciously bizarre movies within the Hollywood system. He gives tribute to favorite actors including Johnny Depp and Vincent Price and writers, and talks enthusiastically about both pulp horror fiction and the works of Edgar Allan Poe.
These interviews show his progression from a young director to a contemplative and dry-witted artist over the course of twenty years. In later interviews, he opens up about his experiences in therapy and how his childhood fantasies still affect his art. "Tim Burton: Interviews" reveals a man who has managed to thrive inside Hollywood while maintaining the distinctive quirks of an independent filmmaker.
Customer Reviews:
Where are the scissors?.......2006-03-14
While the interviews are really interesting and personal, I was surpriced that this director's most personal work, Edward Scissorhands, got a single, (admittedly great) space on this book.
A Great Book for Burton Fans!!!.......2005-08-22
The Tim Burton Interviews is a must have for anyone who loves Tim Burton or filmmaking in general. Kristian Fraga's introduction sets the tone for this fun and informative book on Tim Burtons life, love for movies, and insight into the unique mind of Tim Burton.

Product Description
This indispensable consumers guide to the music of Eric Clapton. An album by album, track by track run down of every song released by Clapton from his earliest tracks with the Yardbirds, through The Bluesbreakers and Cream to his most recent work.
Customer Reviews:
It Fits My Bill.......2003-04-20
This booklet published before Eric Clapton released Pilgrim. It serves the purpose of outling each of Eric Clapton's songs and a summary of their recordings. A very detailed description of each track is given. I especially enoy the descriptions of Eric's guitar styles on many of the songs. Helpful for those debating whether to purchase a particular recording. Yes, there are some slight biases. However, the author does not make his opinion too overbearing. And besides most of his thoughts are pretty compatible with mine. A nice pocket size booklet for Eric Clapton fans.
Book Description
Yes, crossword puzzles can be funny. Not surprisingly, puzzle solvers and creators alike share a love of wordplay, puns, and verbal trickery of all kinds. For example, have you heard of the famous Egyptian actress? It's Mia Pharaoh of course. And what do you call a workaholic's memoir? It's a Love of Labor. Here, New York Times crossword puzzle editor Will Shortz selects the fifty puzzles out of the thousands he's edited that are most likely to make readers chuckle, chortle, moan or groan. Also included is an introduction on crossword humor from Will Shortz.
Customer Reviews:
The New York Times Will Shortz's Funniest Crossword Puzzles.......2007-02-20
The crossword puzzle is great. It is fun to work and gives me quite a few challenges. It is a great mind stimulant.
Not So Hot.......2007-01-05
I didn't like these puzzles much. They had some amusement value, but my chief complaint was that they were too easy. Maybe even easier than the Monday New York Times puzzle.
Funny but disappointing.......2006-07-01
This is a nice selection of fun crosswords, but they are too easy.
From the Board Games Editor at BellaOnline.com.......2005-12-05
These crossword puzzles are, for the most part, easy to medium difficulty. The twist is that they're "funny". By funny, I mean kind of corny, but in a good way. People who are familiar with NY Times puzzles will recognize this type of puzzle: there's often a gimmick or particular style of pun that shows up in 3 or 4 large clues in the puzzle. They often show up in Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday puzzles.
I can easily recommend this book, it's a great one to do on airplanes to stave off the grumpiness that most people feel while traveling. It also makes for a nice go-to book when you know you want a quicker or less difficult puzzle. A great gift, for yourself or someone else!
Not exactly hilarious............2005-02-20
I got this book for a Christmas present and finished it fairly quickly. It was pleasant. The puzzles are a mixed lot of difficulty, mostly on the easier side. The "funny" part involves puns and wordplay and the humorous quotation format.
Good for medium level solvers.

Tricky - but funny, as promised.......2007-01-31

Without imagination and an "attic" full of trivia information, this volume would be overwhelming.
