advice for studying.......2007-09-15
I wish that I had found this book years ago. It is well written in an easy style. It is full of practical advice to encourage not just artists but more like advice for life and living. It is about finding the joy of studying.
I am envious of the students who were able to take his classes. The author makes art accessible to the amateur artist and peels back the pretensiousness of the art world and invites you to take part.
The only section that perhaps could be updated is the part about the internet and making your own website. Today it is much easier to launch sites yourself without the need to get someone to organise the layout and upload it.
This will be a book that I will treasure and keep flicking through to give me the little nudging I need.
To every art school attendee:.......2007-06-29
I highly recommend this book to all students. I've seen too many people while I've been a student who come up unsuccessful as an artist. They fall into many of the pitfalls addressed in this book. The book addresses a lot of ideas that seem obvious once you read them, but you never seemed to notice. It's a short book with rather large text for all you non-readers who may be unsure of picking up a book. Easy and enjoyable read.
Be sure to look for his other great book.......2007-05-13
..called "The Roots of Post-Modernism".
Not sure why Amazon doesn't hold it anymore, it is one of the best art theory, packed with enlightening discourses and anecdotes.
It illustrates art history from the unique perspective of drawing two parallel approaches to art- the retinal, visual-based and the conceptual, language-based - and through this thread it explains how current post-modern art has ancient origins conceptually, and why 1950's abstract expressionism might have more in common with 19th-century Neoclassic painting than with, say, Yoko Ono or Jeff Koons.
A definate must have.......2005-08-22
If you are a student studing art today- YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. Dunning gives excellent advice that is practical for the world today. Clear and concise this book is a must have for artists of the postmodern era.
Enjoyed this a lot.......2004-09-20
Easy to read, excellent advice, straightforward and practical. Anyone interested in an art career would benefit from reading this book.

Just exactly what I wanted.......2005-09-19
This book provides all the information you might need to create painted furniture yourself.
I recommend it as concise, interesting with colored pictures and explanations. Good book for the topic.
Simple Painted Furniture.......2000-04-09
Excellant photography. Simple instuctions and good tips. Addresses most paint and design techniques needed. Gives good ideas to create painted furniture with a personal touch. Well done.
Amazon.com
It is almost impossible to look through this book and not want to start painting immediately. The colors are delightfully different from what is usually shown in project books for painted furniture. The best part is the project actually turns out like the picture, even if you are trying this craft for the first time.
Book Description
Bring old furniture to life or transform an inexpensive, unfinished piece into the stunning focal point of a room. All it takes are some easy-to-do but very effective decorative painting techniques: sponge painting, wood graining, faux inlay, lacquer, stenciling, combing, and crackling. With scaled patterns accompanying the 27 fantastic projects, you’ll work magic in no time at all.

NOT So Simple Techniques.......2006-05-25
Obviously Diane Weaver is a talented artist with a steady hand and excellent perspective and spatial skills. You must be too, if you would like to duplicate her projects which are very complicated and time consuming.
I consider myself an amature artist with skills slightly better than the average non-artist.
In the book, one table needed seven layers of red paint that need sanding with soapy water and wiping down between, I think, 4 of the layers. This is step 17 of 19 complicated steps, that do not even cover all details necessary.
You need to figure out how to do the shadowing yourself on many of the designs, such as the marbles on a red table, and I cannot figure out how she got the paint to gradient from red to black. She uses that gentle gradient paint method on many of the projects, and the only way I know how to do something like that is with a paint can, but she does it with a brush and I cannot figure it out.
There are not enough pictures to cover these complicated projects, for instance, one wooden cuppboard is painted with many realistic insects and looks very cool, but she does not show any close up pictures of the complicated insects such as a dragonfly or butterfly, (she does show detailed pictures of the ladybug, which most first graders can draw easily.
The coloring she did on the dragonfly looks amazing, how she got the lacy colorful yet translucent wings is the 8th mystery of the known world. There are no instructions, and no close up pictures.
This book did inspire me, although I will not be doing any of the projects in the book, not until I raise my kids, go back to art school for 4 years, then retire from work to have the time and experience needed for her projects.
Her work is interesting and she is talented, but I would have perferred just photos of many more projects, just to inspire but not instruct. Or more details. I know book length, word count, and number of photos included are usually dictated by the editor and not the writer, so I do not mean to insult Diane Weaver. Her work is beautiful and the photos that are included are clear, bright, colorful, and helpful.
All my complaining could have been avoided had the editor left the misleading word "Simple" out of the subtitle of the book, and just subtitled it, "Techniques for Fresh, New Looks."
Would I buy this book again? Yes, but only at a good sales price, which you can find here at amazon. Or buy it if you have artistic talent, you may get more out of this book than I could. That is why in spite of all my complaining, I am still giving her 3 stars instead of less.
There are better books out there.......2004-05-05
I bought this book along with "Painting and Decorating Furniture" by Sheila McGraw. While this book did inspire some ideas, most of the projects aren't very exicting and the tips are common sense. I like "Painting and Decorating Furniture" by Sheila McGraw much better. She gives really good tips that aren't common sense (like using chaulking to create raised effects).
Good for technique, not so good for inspiration.......2002-11-02
I was looking for some inspiration, but the furniture was pretty
uninteresting. Only the cover piece was at all bold -- everything else pretty predictable.
Book filled with originality and technique.......2001-11-19
This is the most useful book I've seen on painting furniture. Though these are not "quickie" projects, each is full of good information. Obviously the author really knows her stuff, and the information on preparing furniture for decoration is solid. I used some of her techniques to start off a piece and it came out wonderfully. Please write some more books, Diane!
Not really what I thought it would be.......2001-08-14
I thought this book would be a simple "how to" book. It offers several projects; many look pretty darn complicated for the person looking for "simple techniques" as the title suggests. I was pretty disappointed.
Book Description
First published in 1976, this book is the classic photographic record of Native American life by one of America's greatest photographers.
From 1904 to 1930 Edward Sheriff Curtis sought out the vanishing tribes of Native Americans with an unwavering passion and dedication. His life's work was to record the faces and lifestyles of the Indians before they vanished forever. He photographed more than eighty tribes, from the Southwest to the Arctic. It was an achievement both poignant and monumental.
For this book, Curtis's daughter, Florence, selected 175 of her father's greatest photographs. She has also collaborated closely with Victor Boesen to give readers a moving and detailed biography of Curtis's life and work. In addition, there is a memoir of Curtis by his son, Harold.
The classic photographic record of Native American life by one of America's greatest photographers, with a biography of Curtis's life and work.

Visions of a Vanishing Race.......2007-03-28
This book gives a well rounded look at the work of Edward Sheriff Curtis in a size that is easy to handle.
Deeply moving photos and text, tell a sad story........2001-11-02
After viewing on PBS, a documentary of Edward Sheriff Curtis, I was moved to purchase this excellent work.
I was touched to my soul, by the photos, and how well they conveyed a race of people who have all but vanished.
The text that goes with the pictures is also quite good, and tells a remarkable story of a man obsessed to tell the world a story which we all need to hear and see. Curtis sacrificed his own finances and marriage, and did succeed in completing a very exhausting pilgrimage.
This book is artistic and historically accurate.......2000-04-20
This is perhaps the greatest book authored by my uncle, Victor Hugo Boesen. He worked diligently with Curtis' daughter and other members and friends of the Curtis family to research and to write this book. The photographs are stunning. It is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the American Indian and Curtis' crucial role in recording this history. This book has been translated into French and German. Victor Boesen served as a war correspondent for Liberty Magazine during World War II and was present at the signing of the peace treaty on the USS Missouri. His writings appeared in Life, Look, the Los Angeles Times, and other major periodicals and newspapers.
Book Description
The classic visual record of Native American life, taken by one of America’s greatest photographers, is preserved in all its breathtaking detail in this magnificently produced and oversize volume.
“Lovingly [recaptures] the work of a great student of the American Indian.”—The Los Angeles Times
From 1904 to 1930, Edward Sheriff Curtis sought out the vanishing Indian tribes with unwavering passion and dedication. He made it his life’s work to record their faces and their lifestyles before they disappeared forever, crushed by the ever-continuing colonization of the West by the white man. Now, Curtis’s daughter Florence has selected more than 175 of his most awe-inspiring photos and combined them with a moving and detailed biography of Curtis’s life and work. Along with presenting some of the most famous Indian figures in history—such as Chief Joseph and Geronimo—these pages capture Apache chiefs, Hopi weavers, a Wichita dancer, a Skokomish basketmaker, a Cheyenne child, Blackfoot cookery, Nunivak boys in a kayak, and many more unforgettable images.

Fate has brought these two masters of lies together, and the two must battle it out to see who will be crowned the undefeated heavy-weight champion of fakeness!
Book Description
Welcome to Dark City, urban landscape of the imagination. A place where the men and women who created film noir often find themselves dangling from the same sinister heights as the silver-screen avatars to whom they gave life. Eddie Muller, who led readers on a guided tour of the seamier side of motion pictures in Grindhouse: The Forbidden World of 'Adults Only' Cinema, now takes us on a spellbinding trip through treacherous terrain: Hollywood in the post-World War II years, when art, politics, scandal, style--and brilliant craftsmanship--produced a new approach to moviemaking, and a new type of cultural mythology.
Customer Reviews:
The only one you need.......2007-04-25
Hands down the best book on film noir. Enough facts for the academics and enough fun for the rest of us. Fantastic layout and though some have trouble with the hard-boiled writing style, I loved it and it comes from a master - check out Muller's novels too!
a brilliant and delightful book by eddie muller!.......2007-01-14
more than you ever knew about film noir, eddie muller plunges the reader into the dark and seamy side of hollywood. a fabulous history of film noir with rare and splendid posters, photographs, and insider stories that can only be found here and as only eddie can tell them.
i highly recommend this book. a must have for every film buff and serious collector.
All flash--a Tommy gun full of blanks.......2005-11-26
I will grant that film noir is mostly about style, that's film noir the thing in itself, not the explanation. Muller tries to write like the hard-boiled wordsmiths that helped give noir its flavor; but he adds so much useless patter as to give the impression that, like them, he is being paid by the word. In the end this book is about as satisfying as getting nicotine from a patch. The two stars are for the pictures.
As fast and stylish as its subject matter.......2005-10-02
When most noir-era directors are presented with what the critics have read into their films, they tend to laugh. What they were making-- as Muller points out-- were known as either crime dramas or murder dramas. They were made on the cheap, with their dark themes and fast pace borrowed from harboiled crime writing, and with lots of tricks learned from German Expressionism. They were stylish B-movies.
Finally, a book has come along that deals with these films and filmmakers pretty much on their own terms. -Highly visual and fast paced. Muller looks at subgenres and trends, but focuses more on looking at the often tortured lives of the people who made these films, and on the turbulent period in Hollywood that the 40s and 50s were.
One of my favorite film books, period.
Maybe a little too cute for it's own good.......2005-05-22
I love this book, with it's short and easy to read vignettes about a wide variety of films, actors and subjects within the Film Noir genre. The pictures are great, and all the salacious details are served up. However, sometimes the prose runs to "too cute"; a little too impressed with it's own smirky coyness. Needless to say, many subjects are not explored in any kind of depth. Other than that, it's a great introduction and contains a wealth of details about my very favorite subject.
Book Description
No one embodied the Sex Pistols raw, anarchic excesses like bassist Sid Vicious. Told from an insider’s perspective, Sid Vicious: Rock 'n' Roll Star covers the brief life of punk’s original poster boy including everything from Vicious’s lowly beginning as the only child of a drug-addicted parent to his obsession with violence and the notorious death of girlfriend Nancy Spungen. New material and numerous photographs capture the extremes of this charismatic rebel who crashed and burned at 21.

Great Photographs.......2007-05-20
For photographs of Sid, this book is great. All pictures are in black and white.
The writing is good as well, peering back to young John Beverly, and his care by drug addicted mother.
Great book on sid........2007-01-07
Very good reading. Must have for a Sex Pistols fan.
On the sensational, controversial Sex Pistols leader.......2006-03-18
Malcolm Butt's SID VICIOUS: ROCK N ROLL STAR is an important read for any who are familiar with Sid Vicious and know about his sensational, controversial background. Unlike other reports and surveys, Malcolm Butt's account comes from an insider's standpoint and reveals Vicious' childhood, his introduction to the Pistols, and his declines in a world of mental illness and heroin. A strong background knowledge of the punk scene in general, not just the Sex Pistols and Sid Vicious in particular, lends a well-rounded touch to the biography of Sid's 21 years of life. Add candid black and white photos of the group and its leader and insights into Sid's mental state and you have an authoritative coverage which is required reading for any who would understand the roots and sentiments of punk rock.
intresting 'facts'.......2004-10-05
I find this book as not being a good source of information of Sid Vicious (especially since, from the writings/words of John Lydon,it seems to contradict some things in this book).
wonderful,yet short biography.......2004-06-25
A great biography...the only reason I rated it a 4 was because the author was sometimes wary on details. When you read about Sid,you realize he wasn't as "cool" as everyone thinks he is.He was just like anybody else,a regular human being.People put him on this high pedestal thinking "Wow,he's so cool.I want to wear leather jackets just like him!" well maybe not exactly like that, but you get the point. It shows he was just like most people...insecure at times, and liked to have fun.I read this all in one day...I couldn't put it down.

d20 Future - Future Tech.......2007-01-04
D20 Future outlined things and presented a good sample of what is to be, but was a little on the thin side. This book complements d20 Future nicely and fills in many of the gaps the general rules leave open. You get extra almost everything (occupations, feats, classes, starships, mecha and a lot more, but, surprisingly, no cybernetics).
This supplement is great, but lacks for cybernetics and now you got to buy Cyberscape as well. This and Cyberscape should have been one hard-bound book for like $5 more. I would have bought it.
I was a sucker and bought them both. You may wish to do the same.
LOOK AT ALL OF THE WONDERFUL TOYS!.......2006-03-16
As the name implies d20 Future Tech is a new supplement for the d20 Modern RPG and the d20 Future Supplement. This book has all the goodies that sci-fi and high tech players will love...the gadgets, weapons, mecha, robots, and ships that you're just dying to get your hands on to outfit your characters. The book is broken down into six chapters dedicated to Personal Gear, Starships, Systems, Mecha, Robotics, and combat. The items in each chapter are presented in chronological eras of progress levels. For example, progress level 1 would be the Bronze/Iron Age, while our current age is progress level 5, the Information Age. These go all the way up to progress level 9.
Personal gear covers such things as weapons, ammunition and armor and includes things like gauss rifles and laser weapons, and at progress level 9, the deadly anti-matter launcher. The Starship section delves into the designing of starships and even space stations and the various weapons, armor, and engines that can be used. Various types and sizes of ships are included as well as all of the options that they can be outfitted with such as warp drives. The chapter on systems provides various types of gadgetry not associated with combat. These include systems such as retinal and genetic ID systems, Health and medical care, communications systems, and even gadgets for the home and kitchen.
The Chapter on Mecha will thrill players not only with the variety of Mecha types, armor and weaponry, but also with it's concise rules for combat, crew actions, training, damage effects, and more. There are even transforming mecha! The chapter on robots isn't just about robots but rather robots as heroes and PC's. Build the robot of your dreams with more options than the latest Mercedes. Seven sample bots are included to help get you started.
At 96 pages, d20 Future Tech can't quite be considered expansive, but everything in here is well written and well thought out and there's definitely enough to keep players busy in this new game system from Wizards of the Coast. Excellent art as always!

Toys from the Future.......2006-03-12
First D20 Modern product of the year and it's actually one of the better supplements of the whole series. A good portion of the weapons and such are revamped from Alternity's Star Drive setting. It also dovetails nicely with Cyberspace. And while there is very little for most players to improve themselves other than more choices for guns and rides as well as general gear there is also a chapter for those of us who want to play robots as well as for those that like smashing robots. Still no mecha like the Knight Sabers but some good stuff none the less. In essence this is a toybox. Nothing more and certianly nothing less. But oh, such wonderful toys they are!

A dull story.......2006-03-26
I didn't like this story because it was kind of misleading. And it's not because Data's a cadet. The story didn't have data's personality that much. . The story was just a bit boring but it did have the planet where data was discovered. Over all it was an okay book.
Exciting, BUT..........2000-03-29
Why do all of these Star Trek author keep coming up with new races of the Federation. In this book they just look like Deltans with lines on their heads. How cheesy!
ST: TNG:STARFLEET ACADEMY #6 MYSTERY OF THE MISSING CREW.......2000-03-28
I LIKED THIS BOOK VERY MUCH, IT SHOWS THAT PEOPLE ARE NOT WHATTHEY SEEM TO BE, AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEINGAFRAID. POSSITIVE THINKING, AND GOOD DETECTIVE WORK LEADS THIS STORY TO MAKING NEW FRIENDS, AND DISCOVERING A DANGEROUS AREA OF SPACE, AND PEOPLE WHO REALLY WANT TO BE ALONE. DATA DOES A GREAT JOB OF FIGUIRING OUT EVERYTHING, AND TAKES ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS HUMANITY.
